Here I am again. I just picked up a 1974 evinrude 9.9 for dirt cheap. All I have to is cleaned the dirt, cleaned the carb (complete kit), new wires and fuel lines, new grease, new gear oil...the usual tune-up. She fired up nice. Top and bottom cylinder 120psi. I was so happy. You my friend, is a great help and inspiration to get these old outboards going. Love these series.

I fixed my 1981 15 hp Evinrude throttle by adapting a 1988 tiller handle, lower engine pan and throttle cable. Works beautiful. No more sloppy throttle gears.
Jerry, just curious if you needed any other parts other than the tiller handle, throttle cable and engine pan. I have an '83 and would love to get rid of the gears.
@@akitoinakazu1293 Sorry about that. No, you don't need any other parts. I took a lower pan and tiller handle with the throttle assembly and kill switch from a 1988 and used it on my 1981. Works great. I got everything on EBAY.
Hey, thanks. If its caked with old grease then I would take it completely apart, everything, all the way back to the linkage at the powerhead. That old grease gets really stiff over time and regreasing it dosnt help. The only thing I've seen/used to loosen it up is gasoline. If its not caked with grease and just the handle is stiff pull it off and super clean it, then grease it up. The last one I did was full of corrosion and would not loosen up no matter what used on it. Took it apart and wire brushed it. Worked great. Thanks again & Stay tuned !
Ok you got my attention that’s for a tiller motor, idk nothing about boat motors !! You got a video for coil packs got a Johnson 25 twin cyl the top is zero resistance the btm is maybe 3 or 4 so I’ve got this sluggish problem till I start getting half throttle or more single carb ?
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Testing coils is a waste of time in my opinion. It may test fine but will start to break down when warmed up and then you think you have a fuel issue because the coil tested good. What may seem like a fuel issue could be an ignition problem and vice versa. The sluggish problem could be something as simply as the timing is not set properly, dirty carb or you could be running on only one cylinder. If you just got this motor or if you've had it, either way it's best to go back to basics. Check the compression. Give it a good tune up with new ignition parts. Clean/rebuild the carb. Its best to have a manual if you have no experience, it will save you a lot of time from searching the internet. Try ebay for a good used manual and good deals on parts. I buy all my parts there. Thanks again !

Hey. Thanks! Don't know the proper name offhand. Check marineengine.com for your year/model #. It will give you the name and and part # in the schematic. And yes it will spin. Thanks again & Stay tuned !
I'm doing up a 1966 Johnson 20hp model FD-20C with electric start, the gear in front of the idle stop screw has a missing tooth. How the hell does that one come off?? And how can I get another one? This was a fantastic idea by the way.. Your videos Rock brother.. thanks in advance..
Hey. Thanks ! First you'll have to take off the Control Lever # 24 on the schematic, www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1966&hp=20&model=FD-20&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=Powerhead+Group, then take screw # 90 out to remove # 89 gear, to remove the Throttle Control Gear # 83, on the lower unit schematic here, www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1966&hp=20&model=FD-20&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=Lower+Unit+Group. In the "old days" the "mid section" was known as the lower unit. Anyway it should lift straight up and out, not sure which gear you need. You may want to check that bushing too. Also, depending on how tight everything is and its # 89 gear you want to replace you may have to remove the handle and slide # 107 Gear/shaft forward, then slide # 92 Gear/shaft forward after loosening the screw on # 89 gear to slide it off. R U Getting All This! Hahaha sometimes it can be a real pain in the ars. You see they have most everything in stock and you see the prices. You could buy a whole parts motor for that matter. Get the part number and search ebay for a good price. and whenever you search ebay use the part number with the "0'' at the beginning and also search again without the "0" at the beginning. Some sellers list the parts without the 0. It may be a good idea just to take everything apart all at once and clean it up. Also keep track of all those gears and there positions. Take pictures or videos so you know where they were when you put it back together. You only want to put it back together once. Trust me.
Thanks brother, someone obviously was in there, didn't know what they were doing. They had the tiller handle gear in wrong, I realigned it, took that hard ass grease out, used pb blaster, now she is smooth as a babies ass.. the pin was broken on the throttle lever when I pulled it out. I drilled a hole in the plastic, rand a small machine screw through it, and sheared off the head of the screw..she worked marvelous.. I picked it up for $100.00, needed help, 107/100 psi.. thanks
Thank you - I’ve got a lot of play that I need to address. With that trick of yours for drilling a new hole, does it still work ok if the tiller is at an angle outwards?
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yes, but don't put it together tight again each other or it will rub when you lift the handle. Put a spacer between them like a washer. If you make it to tight you can just drill a new hole. Thanks again and Stay tuned !
Good vid as usual, my question is now that you got the gear to gear fixed, how to you get all the throttle play out of them, got one that has to turn over an inch before throttle starts to take up?
Hey Martin. Thanks again for tuning in! Oh man, you made need some new parts. Those gears hardly travel an inch and a half or so. If all the gears and teeth are good, you should be able to synchronize them back. Sometimes if the tiller handle gets lifted and the handle/gears get turned it gets out of sync. Or they're worn out and hopefully not broken. Hard to say without really seeing it. You may have a job ahead of you. You'll have to inspect everything from the handle back to see whats going on and where. You may just wanna pull everything apart and compare to a schematic on marineengine.com for your make/model. If you end up needing parts try ebay. I buy most stuff there. Could just be a simple fix too. Hope so! Thanks again !
Could you take the head off, fill the plug hole with aluminum brazing rod, re-drill and tap? I have fixed buggered holes in the crankcase this way very successfully, but have never tried it on a plug hole.

My 1984 25hp Johnson has a gear linkage for the throttle like this. It turns but not easily and I’ve greased all fittings and the magneto spins free. What am I missing.
You may need to take it apart and clean it. Old grease gets rock hard, and not much breaks it down except gasoline. Pull the handle off too, sometimes it gets corroded and hard to turn. Thanks
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. I would try a welding shop, maybe they could braze it, adding metal, but then it would have to be shaped. Your best bet is ebay and there is one on the there, and its not cheap. Search this part number on ebay, 390676. This is for the shaft with the gear on it for your model. THIS OLD OUTBOARD - I just bought a refurbished 1982 15 hp Evinrude outboard motor. I hope that you will answer my question. I want to be able to 'rev up' the hand throttle while in idle. Evinrude put some kind of stop that will only allow the hand throttle to move just a 1/4 turn, not letting me rev the motor to keep it running. It starts and idles fine now in summer weather, but on a cool or cold day when I have started my previous outboard motors, I find that I must be able to 'rev up' the motor to keep it running until I can push the choke in and let it idle at normal speed. Please tell me how I can go about being able to 'rev up' the Evinrude motor in the idle position or if it's not possible to do so. Thank you. I'm thinking Evinrude didn't want some idiot to rev up a cold motor, but I think they over did it.
Hey. You will have to remove/modify the shift lock lever that prevents the plate from advancing #48, www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1982&hp=15&model=E15RLCNC&manufacturer=Evinrude§ion=Cylinder+%26amp%3B+Crankcase More information here "Neutral Safety" www.leeroysramblings.com/Johnson_troubleshooting.htm
Not sure there is one, its just a pin. Try marineengine.com for a part number or just punch out the old one and reuse it or a finishing nail will work.
whats up big Dan. wow, you got me with that one. I guess if you wanted to permanently fuse them together and not be able to left the handle up and down it would probably work..? let me know if you try it. thanks for watching. Stay tuned !
Oh, Hahaha , I was wondering about that. I forgot I had put that part in the end of the video. Actual, I dont think it would work on this one, and they do make inserts for cases like this but I've never tried one, although I have used the heli-coils a couple of times but never on something as ''buggered'' up as this one. I thought it was just best to swap it out. Thx man. Stay Tuned !
Looking forward to seeing your fix and getting this one running. I spent a couple weeks last summer fixing up a 1984 15hp Evinrude. Learned a lot as I had never worked on one before. Had a lot of help from RUclips videos like yours to get my questions answered. Keep up the good work!
how do you get all the linkages taken apart to clean it? mine is super stiff. Tapped some grease zerks into the housing spots where the plastic bushings are but it didnt really help. tried looking it over to see how it comes apart but Im not seeing any roll pins or anything to pop it apart. its a 1975 15HP Johnson.
Hey. Thanks for watching. Take the steering Grip Handle off and work your way back and take the steering handle off. If you dont want to take the inner Shaft and control gears off you can clean them with gasoline and a paintbrush. Gas is pretty much the best thing that I have found to loosen up the old caked up grease. A pressure washer helps too. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1975&hp=15&model=15R75C&manufacturer=Johnson§ion=Exhaust+Housing .. Thanks again !
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I have another question you might be able to answer. I'm planning on updating my 1975 points ignition to a 1985ish cdi ignition. First is that possible? 2nd would I need to change the flywheel? Thank you!
@@AlaskanFalcon No I dont think its possible and its probably more trouble than its worth, or everybody would be doing it. But I think there are some kits available for certain motors, I think from cdi electronics. There use to be those "ignition chips" you could use to replace the points, Kodi Bass gets them somewhere, check him out, but the old ATOM brand was the best (pickersyard.weebly.com/atom-universal-electronic-ignition-module.html) , sometimes you can still find a set on ebay. Anyway you'll have to do some homework, check out cdi. Thanks
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yeah it makes sense. You'll just have to go through it. Could be the controls, cable/adjustment, shift rod/linkage, gearcase/clutch. It's a P.I.T.A.! Thanks again & Stay tuned !
Hey Oliver. Thanks for tuning in. Sorry to say, but I have no experience with Tohatstu's. Maybe some worn parts just need replaced? You might find what you need on ebay. There's some good used stuff there! Thanks !
Well, that is a neat idea. Like you say, you can't push the gears too far together or the teeth will interfere with each other when you tilt the handle up. This is a flawed design for sure, the kiss of death is when owners twist the throttle when the handle is partially raised. I was wondering why the gear just didn't slide back into the steering handle, but am guessing that the plastic shaft is bottomed in the gear holding it from slipping back. The problem is that these handles never get properly lubed when new (in salt water), then they won't accept lube. The handle gets slightly loose, and there goes the gears...It can be real tough to get that pivot bolt out of there for sure, but it must be properly lubed and tight. The plastic shaft knuckles get worn, and the mating surfaces in the gears get worn also, which results in all the slop/lost motion in the throttle. These parts are ridiculously expensive, I wish OMC made thin spacers/shims that could be installed behind that big gear. Anything I have ever tried is too thick. The early ones, like your donor did not have the upper water tube grommet issues like the later models, which is why you don't see as many that have suffered overheat damage. The grommet design got changed (screwed up) in 79, which is when the problems began. The early ones did have an aluminum impeller housing with a SS liner. The darn salt is so powerful it would get wedged between the liner and housing, which squished the liner in usually resulting in a damaged impeller or spun impeller hub. The dis similar metals sandwiched together like that really promoted salt growth/corrosion.
Hey. thanks man. yes, crazy design for sure, and stupid expensive but not to bad on ebay for used stuff. I always learn something when you stop by! thx again and Stay Tuned !
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. I'm not sure what size it was. I just used a bit that fit in the predrilled hole that was already in the gear. But the drill bit should match the pin size you use so it fits snug.. Thanks again !
How do you address the slack between idle and the throttle opening? I can turn my throttle almost a 1/4 turn before the gears start opening the throttle.
The idle speed screw on the side of the pan if it's War out or missing you're going to have a lot of Slack. New parts are available but those things never really worked right to begin with. Best thing to do is put a bolt in there where you can adjust it to stop the throttle right before it opens the carb. Check out Leroysramblings.com he has a whole section on it.
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 amazing...im struggling with this right now on my 85' 15hp. I just noticed my roller is 1/4" past the line on cam. Is that the idle screw adjusted in too far? Would that keep it from starting?

My throttle is all the way off gear broke off throttle stick have no clue what to do.... every time I put it together the twist throttle just pops off like a spring won’t stay on the handle and gear just falls back off
Hey. Sounds like the pin broke or fell out. Look at the gear and the end of the shaft, and look for the pin that goes through and holds them together. If its broke and still in there , tap it out and replace it. if it fell out then there should be empty holes in the gear and shaft get a new pin. Or if you cant get the old one out just redrill it and put a pin back in it. A small finishing nail or rivet will hold it.

Hey. You will have to remove/modify the shift lock lever that prevents the plate from advancing #48, www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1982&hp=15&model=E15RLCNC&manufacturer=Evinrude§ion=Cylinder+%26amp%3B+Crankcase

Could you drop the part number for the linkage gear please, I am unable to find it .
Hey. www.marineengine.com/parts/johnson-evinrude-parts.php?year=1975&hp=15&model=15R75C . Thx
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Thank you 👍
Found the one for mine exactly where one would expect. In the Exhaust Housing section.
What’s the part number on that little pin lemme guess discontinued
Not sure there is one, its just a pin. Try marineengine.com for a part number or just punch out the old one and reuse it or a finishing nail will work.
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 they sell a dowel kit at auto parts store for 12 bucks used that worked perfect
Would metallized JB Weld epoxy putty fill in those buggered threads so they can be recut? That stuff is pretty strong.
whats up big Dan. wow, you got me with that one. I guess if you wanted to permanently fuse them together and not be able to left the handle up and down it would probably work..? let me know if you try it. thanks for watching. Stay tuned !
Sorry, I wasn't more specific. I was referring to the buggered up spark plug holes on the cylinder head.
Keep up the good work!
hey. me too, cant wait to get it in the water. almost did it today but it was to windy. maybe tomorrow . thx again!
Nice job, I had to do this to my old 59 Lark 40,
Hey. Thanks . gonna try and get this thing in the water today. Stay Tuned!
how do you get all the linkages taken apart to clean it? mine is super stiff.

Thanks
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 well I may have wasted $120 then. Ordered a set of everything needed but the flywheel off eBay. Guess we'll see how it goes.
I have a 1980 Johnson 40 hp. It goes into gear but don't go in to gear , if that makes sense
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yeah it makes sense. You'll just have to go through it. Could be the controls, cable/adjustment, shift rod/linkage, gearcase/clutch. It's a P.I.T.A.! Thanks again & Stay tuned !
Ok thanks, back to the shop lol this boat I bought last year . Not boat motor savvy 😂
Hi, I have a Tohastu m18D and my throttle has a bit of wiggle room making it less responsive, what would I have to do to fix this?.
Hey Oliver. Thanks for tuning in. Sorry to say, but I have no experience with Tohatstu's. Maybe some worn parts just need replaced? You might find what you need on ebay. There's some good used stuff there! Thanks !
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 thanks you’re video has given me a general idea on what to do, thanks for helping me out 😁
Well, that is a neat idea.
What size drill bit did you use?
Any info is appreciated

Hey. Go to marineengine.com and look up your year and model. It will show you a full Schematic of every part. You will find it and every other part your need to know. Thanks for tuning in!
You could use heli-coils, I have the correct ones for Omc spark plugs

Where can I get both linkage gears? Mine are worn down

This is exactly my motor problem. But I don't have parts in box for easy fix.
hey. you can order a new gear.
175USD they say in comments.
And I was looking for it, hard to get it in Canada.
If you have spare one, I can buy from you
No spare. get your part number and search ebay. best way to go!
On ebay two parts more than $100 very used.
I just outrigged throttle in 10 minutes for free.
I better buy whole motor on some yard sale for that price.

THIS OLD OUTBOARD well big problem the end of the stick where the gear goes on is broke can’t put a pin in it anymore and yes just looked the pin is actually in the gear still
@@talkingvawls8865 I was afraid of that. Check ebay for a good used one or maybe you can get it brazed back together.
