How to Clean Out an American Standard Sink Pop-up Drain Stopper (Speed Connect Drain)

  • When your bathroom sink does not drain well, quite often it's because
your pop-up stopper is plugged with debris. In a previous video I showed you have to clean out a typical pop-up stopper founder in 95% of the sinks. You can see that video here: • How to Clean Out a Sin...
But American Standard sinks have a new type of "Speed Connect Drains", with a Cable Connector that controls the pop-up. This video will show you how these types of pop-up drain stoppers work.

Thank you for this video. I'm a new house owner who was trying to clean my sink drain. I've never seen a connector like this before (I'm used to metal rod). I spent 30 minutes struggling trying to figure out how to take this apart. I finally figured "F it I'm sure RUclips has a video for it!" and yours was the first (and only) one I had to watch to learn how to do this. Thank you!

Yes, like all other posts, you really saved me. I'm 74 and have cleaned a lot of drains but I would have NEVER figured out how this one worked to clean out the HUGE gob of hair...ONE tip: when runing the faucet to flush out the few remaining pieces, PUT THE PIECE BACK ON THE DRAIN PIPE without the drain plug installed!!! Saves cleaning up what splashes out the hole while using a bottle brush on the drain!!! THANKS A MILLION!!!

I don't know why anyone would dislike this. The procedure in this video worked for me on the first try. The main challenge for me was that my pedestal sink is very close to the wall and I couldn't squeeze in enough to see what I was doing. I wanted to add my thanks for this video. Inherited this unit in our new-to-us house, Searched an hour on Saturday night, found only 3 pictures matching mine, and was in the process of sending pics to American Standard when I found the term "Speed Connect", which brought me to your video. My drain cap was stuck down, almost not draining. The drain stick was in the reverse position, and not coming up as high (maybe open only 1/16), and now that it's in back side, as you suggested, the Am.. Std..lettering reads correctly and the stopper comes up with a 1/4 inch clearance--perfect, quick drain! There was a bit of crud in there as well, but not the problem, though I'm pleased to have cleared it out. Thanks again.

  • @stevenhaker
    @stevenhaker 11 лет назад

Thanks for posting! In the old days, you'd just lift the stopper out. Then they made them so you would turn the stopper first, then lift it out. Then they made them so you'd unscrew the connector under the sink, pull the rod out, then pull the stopper. Now they are like in your video... mess around with it for an hour and you may get it done without breaking a little plastic part. Next year's features will include ten more parts and a screw that requires a special driver. Progress! Awesome!

I didn't have a real problem with putting this back. It took two tries and I was done. There was a lot of debris in my sink and it was nasty not to mention the water not running freely down the drain. I now have a very clean sink and my water is running very fast down the drain. Thank you so much. I won't complain about missed steps, when my plumber would have had no problem charging me $200.00 to fix this clog that took me less than 30 minutes. Your'e instructions were excellent. Thank you!!!!

I was hand washing a blouse in the sink that had a trinket attached to a chain and the piece slipped down into the drain and I tried for 20-30 minutes to get it out. Pondered calling a plumber but thought let me check RUclips and YEAH! Your video saved me a service call and I learned something new. One thing I did not pay attention to though was making sure the little piece you "pop" off, that the teeth actually face out toward the connector cable. I kept trying for 15 minutes to push it back into place with the teeth facing the drain, which was the wrong way. Luckily turned it around and it popped right back in to place, Wheww.....great video. Thanks so much. 15 minutes saved me $160.00 service call.

I finally got it to work. Had the same problem, I had it all put together, but plunger didn't work and pop up rain was down. So I put the plunger down, put the J piece in, fiddled with it by hand until the pop up drain was in the up position, put the plastic slotted cap on (slots facing the outside) and screwed the cable piece back on. It now works. Sad thing is is that I didn't want the cable connection any longer, too hard to go through this every time you want to clean out the drain. But without those 2 little plastic pieces, water leaked from the cable piece. And with them, the pop up drain can't be pulled out. Thanks for the video, it saved me from calling a plumber to fix my mess.

One thing I'm not seeing mentioned is that when reinstalling the stopper, you actually have an option: replace as shown in the video to "lock" the stopper in, or turn the stopper 180 degrees to make the stopper removable. I have chosen the removable option which allows me to simply twist out the stopper and clear blockages (usually a long slimy hair ball!) The stopper will still go up and down and seal to hold a sink of water.

UPDATE: Just tackled my drain cleaning and it went very well because of your great video.
The only thing I did differently was to turn the stopper 180º so it does not get locked in by the the rotating J-hook.
This way I can remove it from the top without having to disconnect anything. I also tested this with water in the basin and yes it holds water when the stopper is down.

    Awesome video! Thanks so much.
I didn't realize that this wasn't a typical pop-up stopper until I had already taken everything apart! Saved my butt lol.

That is precisely what I was looking for! Thanks so much for the easy explanation. Once you do the process you realize how easy it is, but without the information provided in this video, it's tough to know how to start! Thanks again!

Thank you for this video! I didn't save my instructions and was within seconds of destroying my stopper. Your video was spot on!!! The only small variation that I made was to slightly loosen the two nuts above and below the stopper assembly. That enabled me to turn the stopper assembly so it was facing the front and made the removal of the two plastic pieces a lot easier. Thank you again! Chris in Iowa.

Better than the other videos for this. Thank you for including the troubleshooting at the end. I really needed that!
