      GUYS, I have tried everything to unclog my basement bathroom sink. I tried even the white vinegar and soda, which seemed to open it up just a little bit. My problem was past the P-trap, after the vent pipe. Snakes wouldn't fix the problem (snake would stop). Well, I found holes in the vent pipe (metal) and replaced 6 feet total of the vent and drain piping. When I looked inside the piece of the removed drain pipe, I realized no wonder nothing I tried worked. The stuff that was in there felt more like a RUST TO METAL BOND kind of a deal. That's decades of shaving cream, soap, saliva, and toothpaste accumulation, I think! Certainly not the type of clog I expected. I expected soapy hair and toothpaste all dried up.. you know... That stuff was even difficult to remove with a hammer, but not impossible.
      Now if you ask me how I could have easily solved this problem, I'd bet all I own, that pouring/spraying WD40 down the drain would have done it.. Not recommending you to do this, but I can almost guarantee that WD40 will solve similar clogging problems and, in MY OPINION, using just a lil bit is harmless, but you should always do some research on this before doing anything.
      In my case, this issue was a blessing in disguise. I replaced a damaged vent pipe. It had so many holes in it looked like it had been used for target practice! Replaced it with a PVC one. I live in a basement. I might post a vid later...

    This is a WONDERFUL video. I love how THOROUGH he is, he's there to do the job so well that it will be years before it has to be done again. I especially like how he uses paper towel to clear out the inside walls of the pipes and the stopper, because that's where clogs begin. THANK YOU!!
    About the only suggestion I would have is to show all the supplies that might be useful before we start. I always prefer to gather everything first, before starting, so I don't have to leave the "job site."
    And now it's time for me to roll up my sleeves and get to work on this sink of mine that's so clogged it takes hours to drain. :-)

    • @writerandartist
      @writerandartist 3 года назад

      LaterL I could not fix my problem. There is a block of some kind inside the pipe on the other side of the wall. What's more, the pipe turns at a right angle just as it enters the wall, so neither of the snakes I bought could get any more than 4" into that pipe. :-( Time to call a pro.

    An awesome tutorial! I had no idea the process was so complex. I purchased a drain brush but needed to figure out how to remove the sink stopper so I could shove the brush down the pipe/drain. Little did I know that was only 1/3 of the process! Thanks a bunch. Going to subscribe to your channel. I know there are other tips and tricks I can learn from you. :-)

    Thank you!!! I just needed to take out the drain stop and clean it there. I had no idea newer sinks hand the handy contraption on the back to unscrew the stopper! This took me a total of 3 minutes. 🤘

    Good job! Wish I could fix mine like I have in the past. I now live in an apartment complex and not allowed to go "hands on" with fixing anything. Only thing I might add would be for those who don't know, when reinserting pop up stopper back in place, find the hole at the stopper's bottom. As you lower the stopper down in drain, position flange with hole toward the back of sink before inserting control rod. Carefully insert rod into hole and check for proper movement of stopper befpre tightening.

      @@HomeRepairTutor the super found much hair in the sink pipe and believes it came from us but I believe most of it came from prior tenants. When we became tenants the bathroom sink never drained so fast. Is the bathtub and sink connected somehow? The super says no. He never asked how fast (or slow) the sink was draining when we moved into the apartment. He just automatically presumed it was all us. The building was BUILT 2005 btw sure would appreciate your advice. He actually took pictures of the hair he took out from the pipe and I don't want this to be an issue in the future and possibly risk being evicted over it. Thank you.

    Bless you! Thank you for posting. Our kitchen and bathroom sinks backed up, right before my daughter's birthday party, and you gave me the confidence to take apart a pipe, snake everything out, and get it all together. Everything drains beautifully, and I have some enzymes at hand to prevent further clogs. Best of all, my daughter helped, so hopefully she will grow up not intimidated to fix things around the house.

    I'm a 69 1/2 year old woman, and I just cleaned my bathroom drain (or any drain) for the first time in my life. It's flowing great now, but I'm leaving my bucket underneath for now. It took me over an hour, because everything was so dirty I made two trips outside to clean things with a hose and shop rags. Two tips - it was invaluable for me that I photographed the pipes with my cellphone prior to taking the drain pipes apart. Also, I used a small, high-powered flashlight to look into the pipe that disappears into the wall - that helped too. On the negative side, I had to give up trying to reinstall the popup thingie. I have another RUclips video, just on that one thing, marked, and today or tomorrow I'll try again to connect the popup thing. For now, I'm just happy that the pipe drains again. (I tried the septic version of Draino and I tried a LOT of baking soda and vinegar before following this video and cleaning out the pipes - those other remedies did not work whatsoever). Best wishes to everyone. If I can do this, despite my age and knees that don't bend, so can you. (Oh, also - I sat on a thick pad - it's actually one of those square pads one uses to sit upon inside of boats - I've been using this same pad for work projects for at least 20 years).

    Thanks Jeff for sharing your video it was very helpful. I am having a difficult time trying to get the goose neck off. I cleaned out the drain with my wet vac before taking the p-trap off. The clog is in the goose neck that goes into the wall. I tried using the snake but could not get it to go in very far. I am going to keep working on it.
