. Snifff -- mmmm, that new airplane smell. This is the worlds newest 747, just a few weeks old. It's a UPS 747-8f Freighter. The aircraft is immaculate, having just left the factory at Boeing to enter service with UPS. UPS was nice enough to invite me onboard the aircraft for an interview and tour with Erik, a long time Captain for UPS.
First, we go through some of Erik's career and talk about how he got into aviation. Then we move onto what it's like to fly the 747, and what makes this 747 different from the 747-400. As we discuss some of those aspect of flying the plane, we start to touch on the details of the cockpit with a basic overview of how the cockpit controls, systems, and autopilot functions work together.
We go over things such as the PFD, MFD and EICAS which are part of the glass cockpit. These systems have been around for a long time, but they're getting more refined and reliable as time goes on. While the displays and controls may look the same, there's a lot more going on behind the scenes. LED screens, faster computers, and more refined algorithms make this and other Boeing aircraft some of the safest in the world.
Erik also talks about the 747-8fs new electronic checklist, which was introduced with the 777 and 787, and now making it into these upgraded versions of the 747, 737, etc.
He also discussed redundancy of the FMCs (Flight Management Computers) as well as where pilots spend most of their time controlling the aircraft, which the Mode Control Panel (MCP) and Control Display Unit (CDU).
We then take a look at the crew rest area for long haul flights, in addition to the cargo area where we run through some of the unique logistics that UPS must go through to load cargo.
It's truly an amazing machine, and I hope you guys enjoy watching the video!

So glad to see a brand new 747 , hope they never stop making them ! The Queen of the Skies ! Thank you AofA and UPS !
You're welcome!
sadly, i think they're stopping production of the 747 in 2021, the same year the a380 is also stopped production
These new ones will be in the sky’s till. 2040s maybe 2050 but that’s a stretch.. but we can hope
747 in general is a really good plane for cargo... but its very inefficient when it comes to fuel burn since there are other (2 engine) planes that can fly the same distance but more efficient such as the A330, 350 and the boeing 777, 787 etc
@@Jessy74588 each one of those 2 engines is more powerful than 1 of the 747 tho. Plus the 747 is the best for long-distance cargo transport.
Another 16 Dash 8's on order! Thank you UPS for helping to keep the 747 alive!
Ahh the nice new look of a new aircraft... sooo different then the Q400 I fly.
My favorite airliner! I so envy you for this tour. The closeups on the cockpit are pure eyegasm for me. Thanks a lot!
Those fire resistant containers reminded me of UPS 6. Glad that UPS implemented additional safety measures to prevent the same incident from happening again. I hope the other cargo airlines will follow suit.
Great interview! You asked every question that I thought of right after I was thinking of it .
Thank you Captain for giving this interview!!!
Great interview! Thank you!
Great info vid. Still enjoying Josh's Alaska vids also. Thanks for the fantastic tour you gave him especially the last Denali vid! Incredible!! You could probably make huge bucks just taking peeps on those tourist flights.....
The Boeing 747, greatest aircraft ever made, it's sad that the passenger variation has died, but there will still be a demand for the freighter version because of the design.
And what an awesome cockpit, simple and well designed.
Long live the Queen of the Sky.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Erik is one of the pilots taking the DC-3 over to Normandy with Matt Guth. Very cool to see him in his native habitat.
He gave it away several times in the Atlantic crossing vids. Lol
Cool walkthrough
First 747 made is parked at the museum of flight near seattle, the 747 800 of today is a marvel of technolgical evolution since 1969
Worked for UPS 39 years. Great Company
Awesome vid bro (:
I really enjoyed this video.the 747 is my fave plane.
There was a UPS 744F that flew in to HNL today from SDF and an hour later, she took off to SYD. Talk about eat and run!
Cool! Very interesting.
Glad to see they are still building the 747. In my humble opinion; it is the most beautiful and graceful airplane in the world. Angle of Attack, thank you for the video.
I think I learned more in this video than in my own tour 😂 nice work buddy!
Ha! I know. I had stepped out of the cockpit, then asked him to come back for the technical overview. I felt like that made the video.
Great vid man.Good questions too.
Glad you enjoyed it
ERIC! PIC rated in the DC-3 as well! Good to see him at his day job!
I love going to check these out in the factory and on the flight line. It is a very impressive aircraft. Especially sitting in the cockpit 30 feet off the deck!
Nothing like it
Nice video Chris. Very cool cockpit. I wouldn't want the payment book for that monster. Thanks for sharing.
Great video - thank you -
Great to see companies like UPS keeping the Queen of the Skies alive!
i got to see these on the daily😁😁😁. the ups pilots are some of the coolest, most laid back guys.
Very interesting Video with vauable information provided...
That was kool. Wow. Huge aircraft.
His kids probably call him and say "Hey Dad can you check if my package is on board your aircraft?". 😁😁
Wouldn't that be cool to know, though?
That captain is very passionate about flying, good to see buster brown upgrade their fleet.
Very nice, I found it to be very informative.
cool interview
I was glad to hear about the improved fire-resistant containers. Both UPS and FedEx have lost several aircraft to in-flight fires, several with a loss-of-life. With the increased amount of lithium batteries and hazardous materials being shipped by plane, anything that can withstand or contain fire (containers, fire suppression systems, bulkheads, etc.) is life-saving.
Man, what a beautiful plane!
IKNOWRIGHT?
No complaints here. Good video with a lot of #avgeek goodies. Thanks for posting!
Beautiful! I am so disappointed that I missed it. I arrived in OshKosh the day after it left.
Pretty cool!! I’ve flown jumpseat with UPS on both the 747-8 and 747-400.
That would be fun.
Nice video, I think UPS is an awesome organization.
The Queen of the skies!
Thanks to show us the Boeing 747
awesome!
Looking very nice.....Thank you....
Thanks!
A great passionate 747 pilot
He really was!
A proper plane ! Queen of the skies and long may she reign !
Wow, 763,000lbs landing weight. Absolutely amazing.
Reassuring seeing UPS make the additional storage for fire resistance after the tragedy in Dubai. That was the Captains reference to Lithium batteries.
Good video. Eric B is a great instructor.
Sure is!
I’d swear this guy was in a Matt Guthmiller DC 3 video...
I believe you may be correct. Eric is name as I recall and I do remember him slipping in a "UPS" on one of the radio calls from the DC-3!
Pretty sure you are correct
I KNEW I KNEW THAT FACE!!!
It is
Wow...u asked some really good questions ✌
Thanks!
Very informative video. Music was a bit distracting tho. But thank you! Perhaps I missed it but was this at Oshkosh?
I love the crew compartments on airliners for some reason just think they are a clever use of space.
Gave the video the 747th like 👍🏼😌🛫
Halloween PaPi that’s awesome!
What a beautiful plane! Unfortunately, they left Oshkosh the day before we got there. I like to watch them going over my house enroute from PANC to KSDF.
Ahhh that new plane smell!
Intoxicating
Now that’s a big plane...been on a few when my mother worked for flying tigers (back in the day).
Very cool
Iconic machine ✈️
That it is!
one of the greatest airplane ever, hope the will never stop production !For me it is the queen of the sky !!!and also Jo Sutter, the great eng. who designed this tream, R.I.P.!
It's cool when you get to talk with a guy who knows his stuff. I'd trust my new rubiks cube shipped from China to that guy any day!
Large fuzzy dice! The cockpit is missing a set of large fuzzy dice to make it complete! Until it gets those, it's not a complete cockpit!
Peter Toth You’re right! Guess that’s an option UPS didn’t get with Boeing.
Hula girl too.
Plus a chrome chain yoke and maybe foot shaped pedals.
Nice video, great work. Some bad phasing in the audio though.
I cut out the background noise, and it did some weird things. Tough environment. Lav would have been better
Music editing was just a tad annoying (had to get that out of the way...sorry!) Nevertheless, a great video. Very informative - very interesting. Thanks for posting it!! Btw, I hit the "like" button.
Good PR and timing for Boeing ! Go UPS! Thanks
Sure enough!
Thank you UPS for keeping this beautiful airplane in production. United, American and Delta. Why don't ya'll buy a few huh??
Are these CRT displays? I saw a video about upgrading the old 757/767 CRT displays with modern avionics. Is there a plan to roll this type of upgrade to the 747?
Would be good if we continue using the 747 to carry people rather than packages but like others say good to see UPS keeping it alive.
Fly Lufthansa
AofA, thanks for the videos. You should end all of your vids with your signature call-sign...Cleeeeeeaaaarrr That's your trademark!... The way you call out before engine start. I used to call that too when I was flying helicopters but with just normal clear-call. BTW; I fished salmon in Nak Nek, Bristol Bay for two summers in the -90's , love Alaska! Now happily live in Hawaii. Aloha
What part of Hawaii? We're thinking of spending some time in Maui this Winter.
@@angleofattack We live in Oahu. All Islands in Hawaii are very beautiful, you're going to love your trip. Especially when leaving winter behind. Enjoy.
Very grade beautiful
To the 61 people who gave this a thumbs down 👎.... SHAME on YOU! 🙄🤦♀️😡
just a bunch of airbus idiot fanboys :)
So can they load freight on the upper deck???? I know the 747-800 passenger version has a HUGE upper deck, much longer than the 747-400. Does the 747-800 freighter have that same extended upper deck??
5:05 There's actually a thing called a radiohead? On a 747?! I am so happy i could cry
What is on the top of pilot windscreen next to pilot's head? Looks like lights?
did i see a stall by the A-10 at the end?
Did that CA ever fly stretched 8s with UPS?
Thank you Chris. I don’t think it will be long before we have totally pilotless freighters on dedicated pilotless freight routes all controlled from the ground.
Speed Brake - Nah, it’ll never be regulated
Baxter Cat! ruclips.net/video/t020hmc1NBc/видео.html
Never going to happen, it's impossible to program a computer for every possible situation, you still need the man in the seat to react to what he sees, hears and feels in real time and when his first input doesn't work try the next thing. The pilot will always be able to react quicker and have a better sense of what is happening and how to correct than a computer.
The army has a lot of drones like this, but I don't think it makes sense for commercial operators. As a pilot, I would rather be in the plane. Unless flying remotely means I can go home every night...
Now for a walkthru tour of my cessna 150 🇺🇸
Gary Pugh you gonna have to find a midget to walk through that one! 😂
Very Nice to see the new plane. Thank you for showing. Ps: i don’t know where you got the thought we needed music for Some seconds, but that has become A real nuisance over whole RUclips. It does Not add anything.
Just built airplane... still looks like it just came outta the 70s, lol...best part about freight travel, its quiet...still got engine noise but u dont have to deal with passenger comfort
Did he sign off your log book to sit in the first officer's seat?
Great video and interview. Would be better without the random music though..
I agree, lose the music!
I miss you -8F
Very nice bird but miss the cold circular staircase to upper deck
That's been gone for years, even the 400 didn't have that
Hey!....isn't that the Dude who flew the PAA livery DC-3 to D-Day??? I dunno...all bald guys look alike to me. But he did say he was a 74 CA. It's great footage over on Matt Guthmuller's site..... Thanks AOA for this..!! so clean so clean....
Damon Harvey I was thinking the same thing!
Yeah it's him
@@s.leszczynski5966 same.
Those containers also help contain explosives if they go off, increasing the likelihood of the aircraft flying to an airport instead of crashing
Sorry but where is the interview part with Erik?
747 is the best jumbo ever built..
what airshow is that?
"Ummm" was said 136 times in the making of this video.
If you dont say uhm 30 times a minute are you really a pilot?
@@etnies777 He's a pilot, not a public speaker.
W D Ummm, Ummm, Ummm, Argh!!!
And you were sad enough to count them? ;-)
It's more important that he knows how to handle the airplane.
From the thumb nail the captain looks almost identical to Martin Brodel. Martin Brodel runs a news channel here on RUclips and LiveLeak. 🙂
Anyone here ever watched Martin Brodel's channel before?.
That chevron F/D is a bit unusual. I was always used to seeing as a cross.
F/D can be either single-cue, as in the video, or dual-cue, the cross you referred to. Some airplanes allow to switch FD in flight, others you must be on the ground. The dual cue is used more today and has the advantage that it can be split, using only lateral or vertical guidance only, depending on the situation. The single cue is just a carry over from the analog/mechanical flight director days. The dual cue is mostly the default FD on modern avionics. Good day!
The biggest difference between UPS and FEDEX is, UPS is a trucking company that also has planes. FEDEX is an air shipping company that also uses trucks.
Already 2 MEL’s on it😜
How do they see over that dash?
reminds me of a nicer C-5.
Very interesting. Have been enjoying your series with Josh. I am a non pilot. What controls does the pilot use to steer a big mother like this on the taxiway?
The rudder for minimal movements or tiller for larger movements. They both connect to the nose wheel steering. The pilot/first officer can select to have the main gear help steer for tighter turns.
@@mrminecraftvlogs6883 No selection on the 747-400/-8. It's automatic, based on wheelspeed or ground speed and nose gear angle.
Takes huge reverse thrust to stop a train, same with freight airplanes.
I have to wonder how long this size of aircraft will be available to cargo haulers, given that passenger operators seem to be preferring smaller aircraft now. It already appears that the 747 will be the last four engined aircraft in production, and I can't imagine that Boeing could continue to run the production line just to supply a few cargo airlines.
Maybe the twins could get this big, but I wouldn't want to bet on it.
The flight Captain looks very familiar????? I believe he was flying a DC-3 on another RUclips flying channel, with Matt Guthmiller
Thought so!!! How did you confirm that?? Never got his name@cray mour
That’s him!
thank you Matt - enjoy all of your videos. Keep them coming @@mattguthmiller
Can we go for a test drive?
