Dear friends and followers, welcome back to my channel!
This video shows my captain and me performing an ILS approach and landing onto runway 06 at Luxembourg airport. This video shall help you understand all the steps that pilots need to do in order to fly an ILS approach with a Boeing 747.
I hope you enjoy this video! Big thank you to my company for approving of this video!
Wishing you all the best!
Joe

Captain Joe was the kind of kid who would tell everyone he messed up in a test while scoring 95/100. ;)
Haha😂Au contraire😂😂
Wanted to say the same thing 👍
Amazing video captain
Are you speaking French or Au contraire is also use in English, captain ?
i do that all the time
Staying humble, owning our mistakes, always learning, love it. Can apply this to just about anything in life! Even with the brief hover, the landing still looked nice and buttery!
I wish more of the working world was like this. Instead of jumping to immediate blame, accept that mistakes happen (no matter how small), learn from them, and be better next time. If all of the working world was like this EVERYTHING would be better, we've had a safer world, with better made products because people wouldn't be SCARED of admitting a mistake was made.
@@repatch43 For sure. It says a lot about a person or a company or an industry when honesty and transparency are encouraged. Joe could have easily re-recorded this until he had a “perfect” landing, but the fact he didn’t and showed us he’s human is refreshing.
Much better landing soft than hard. Often have I been on planes smacking a Boing 737-300 into the runway. I guess the gear has much more strength/strain margin on a small plane than on a big one. But still I wonder if there are strain gauges monitoring things and how often things have to replaced because of these smack down landings and why do they occur so often ?
If there are wind gusts, does it automatically mean that high vertical landing speeds are inevitable and is it just how it is with "small" planes ?
Also rolling during landing because of crosswinds, how much roll and yaw can be handled by the landing gear (or wing clearance), before skidding or other non-linear instabilities ?
Those are the thoughts going through my engineering mind while flying on holidays.. 🤔🤨
@@finnstadel Sure, IF you aren't spraying jet fuel on school children....
It certainly did look smooth.
One of the smoothest landings I've seen and yet he does an unbiased analysis. I just wait for his 'A good pilot is always learning.' Kudos to you and your team.
Yeah I was "what was wrong, looked perfect".. before he said anything about it
"Any landing you walk away from is a good one"
As a retired Aircraft Mechanic for us it was "Any landing you didn't break anything and walked away from is a good one"
Nice BTS 👍
Cheers
And if you can use the airplane again it was a perfect landing.
Horrible quote. You can ask any pilot flying commercially if this quote is good and 100% of the time, they’ll say that this quote is nonsense.
A landing with slight hover is always smoother than butter. That queen has one more reason to thank you for being so gentle to her. You also saved some bucks against the maintenance of the impact dampers.
A big thank to Cargolux team and their associates for making the video happen. Looking forward for more please.
Well, you can save much more on the tires, when landing a bit more "sportive". ;)
As someone who is terrified of flying, watching this weirdly makes me feel so much more comfortable. You pilots and crew are amazing!!!
Will be a legendary when captain joe gets his fourth stripe
He already has got it with a320, hense the nickname Captain Joe, but he transferred back to the right seat to fly the 74
@@lesleybrawn5608 actually no. He was about to or near to get it but he had to switch for his former company stoped operating.
and actually be a captain
When approaching Runway 06, you actually fly over my home town.
I grew up in Pétange and currently live in Esch-sur-Alzette.
Greetings from Luxemburg😀
That was really interesting to see - thanks to everybody involved for letting you film it, and to you for what looks like a really good landing.Don’t be too harsh on yourself
I mean, this just shows the level of perfectionism you strive for at your job. Your company's openness is really great. It would probably also be a great project to record more of these videos for training purposes. If anything recording in this detail would be detrimental to the pilots in case someone would severely mess up rather than bad for the company. Especially those videos with small errors and room for some improvement would probably be very good training material for new pilots.
So cool to see the regular, behind-the-scenes content, and, even better, to know how critical you are of yourself as a pilot. As I watched this video, my husband listened, and he pointed out how comforting it is to know how much you care as a pilot. We appreciate your passion and care to strive for perfection!
Kudos to everyone involved in getting this video to RUclips - really nice to see that degree of cooperation between company, pilot, co-pilot and crew filming, nice one! 👍
It is FUN when the company permits this, the Captain permits this and your colleague assists. It brings the cockpit chemistry to life!
I wouldn't view it as a mistake, more like a miscalculation.
Big thanks to your company for allowing you to do the video!!
I’m working on glide-slope and managing throttle and elevator and watching you demonstrate what I’m studying was really cool. Thanks so much! Great video
I really like seeing you being gentle on the controls. Many pilots do like 5 inputs per second close to the ground which a plane of this size can never follow that fast
I really liked this one Joe! Would love to see more of these. I appreciate the variation of videos you create, and that it's not always the same format.
I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR SO LONG! Thank you so much Joe for posting you flying the Queen of the skies! It looks awesome!! ❤️❤️
Seeing your own landing afterwards from someone who filmed it, must have been a sweet experience. Normally you see only one view, or the other.
I might start at a pilot school in 2 years or less. Say thank you to the crew from people like me. These small vids are very instructive! Please, if you can in the future, make more like these! Best greetings from Norway!
You will also be a good pilot I trust haha
I worked on the 7478, great to get a FD view and getting to see the queen earning her paycheck! We love y’all at CLX, amazing work Joe!
Big thanks to Cargolux for letting this be published! Love seeing such technical depth and explanation. :) Also curious if you'd consider talking 747 shop with Kelsey of 74Gear, too.
I loved this, thanks Captain Joe. I'm a student pilot and my first few landings were characterised by flaring too high and pulling back too aggressively! Thankfully, via a patient FI, I am improving. It takes a while to realise that the controls are very light touch, especially when you get near the concrete and you have to overcome that instinct to pull the nose up 😊
Respect for uploading this and talking through where you were not entirely happy. Shows an admirable humility, which I'm sure is one of the best qualities any pilot could have.
Thank you and the team for this. This is the first time I’ve seen such an informative video of piloting. I’d love to see more.
Thank you to Cargolux and Captain for you being allowed to show us how much work it is to land the Queen of the Skies. You got a lot of ground effect to make you float for a smooth landing. Looked good to me. I know you want perfect. But learning is knowledge. Cheers.
Great teaching for everyone here Cap! Thank you very much for sharing! At first I thought you were a bit too quick seeing the tyres staying up in the air, after you explained what kind of runway that is I'm very impressed, you rightfully seek perfection but hey that was a good landing! Cheers see you in the next video :)
Thank you for this tutorial captain! I'm now gonna go land a 747. Wish me luck!
Did you survive?
Lol
This was an amazing video! Keep up the good work Captain Joe! A beautiful 747-8.
Terrific video, great crew. A big thanks to your captain and company for allowing us to let us be part of your landing experience. Keep up your fantastic channel.
That was a perfect landing 😁
And it's very nice seeing you flying manually through the arrival and approach🔥
Flying the FD by hand is the most fun way to land.
Another great video from Captain Joe, Thank you so much for telling us the landing procedure, really enjoyed it so much
I'm glad to see that not only low-time private pilots like me spend their time reviewing their own recordings in order to figure out what they could have done better. Regarding your landing, I just wish I could land a 747 like that. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks to all 3rd parties - we viewers really appreciate it!! I know how hard ar these recordings to get approved, especially by airline company (for example Kelsey from 74 Gear haven't been lucky yet with such approval).
Err, they probably rightfully doesn't want to get a chance to feed his "cockpit confession" show with caught on cam stuff ^^' ...
@@Damien.D lol!
Love this video! I can’t count how many landing videos I have watched. You should film one like this for take off! Would love to see that!
Thank you for the additional information, very enlightening. One of the best aviation videos out there. For us land-lubbers, your landing and flare looked just perfect.
Looked smooth and fantastic to me. It doesn't have to be 100% perfect everytime. You can be 99% sometimes as long as it's not unsafe. Keep the videos coming! Great job!
Looked like butter to me, Joe. Great video thanks a lot!
Hey Captain I would love more videos like. Great Content!
Love the in flight education. Great job coordinating getting the external landing video as well.
What a great video. I like the “play by play” of the landing process. Very informative! You should do one like this of a departure. Keep up the great content!!
Your most enjoyable video yet! We actually had the opportunity to see you in the “office!”
That was a butter!!! 😂 awesome landing and video!
I love these kind of these videos, where you explain the landing procedure. It is very informative.
Thank you for this. It is always good to get a pilot's perspective as I am a regular flyer (Albeit as a passenger) as I can get an idea what to feel for as I am taking off or landing.
now i see where all the floating jokes by flyingdolf are coming from XD but that aside still a lovely landing, loved this video, especially as a plane spotter in Luxembourg always seeing planes landing from the outside its really cool seeing what its like from your perspective! :)) also very much looking forward to preorder your book :D
Hats off to CargoLux, especially, and the captain to allow us inside the cockpit. I am appreciative. Good job, Joe.
Thanks for taking us along!
Thank you for that, fascinating to see. Student pilot myself, so was interesting to see the full approach and would be interested to see take-off if possible !
Looked pretty good from here. And remember any landing that you can use the airplane, and you underwear again is a good one. :)
Captain Joe, I get what you did wrong, but from a spotter's point of view, that landing was beautiful! A very graceful flare, and a buttery smooth touch. Although I'm not a pilot, I see many 747 touchdowns every night, and many pilots seem to thunk the airplane down right on the aiming point. In this video, the viewer cannot see if the plane touched down in the touchdown zone, so it's impossible for us to see if you missed it or not. Regardless, it was a nice landing, and a nice informative video, and I enjoyed it. Thanks, Joe!
Profession at its finest. Thanks for this amazing informative video!
Great flying and what a professional and calm Captain as well! Excellent communication here and all pilots should aspire to foster this kind of a cockpit environment.
Also want to say *thank you* to all people involved making this video possible.
Dankeschön =)
Captain Joe: *makes a perfect landing*
Also Captain Joe: "I'm un happy about it because I pulled the yoke a bit too hard"
So glad to soon share the facilities with you at ELLX ! Going to work for LAR from 2022 on. Great landing that I might have witnessed on my observational day, was it recorded on early September. Keep the great streams going, and the fine work done.
A video I have been waiting to see watching Captain Joe land the 747. Amazing!!!
Hi Joe, this great video raised a question on my side : the noise level inside the cockpit seems extremely low. Is it because of some noise-cancelling tech or is the cockpit actually somewhat quieter than the cabin?
Thank you in advance!
In most planes with wing/rear mounted engines, the cockpit is usually the quietest place. Reasons being that the engine's main noise is due to the thrust going rearward, and hence making the cockpit the farthest from the source of the noise.
In fact on the A380 when it first came out, there were some concerns that the pilots could not hear the engines well enough due to a combination of quieter engines and better/modern insulation and the sheer size of the jet.
I think they probably recorded the audio from the headsets and the ambiance audio in 2 separate tracks so it's easier when editing the video to reduce the cockpit noise.
In addition, when the microphone is placed very close to the mouth of the person speaking, the ambiance sound level is very low compared to the voice level so it's easy to reduce the ambiant noise this way using a single microphone and track.
Here are 2 videos I recorded in a plane (sorry French :p), the first one has audio recorded from the camera built-in microphone in an A380, there is a lot of noise : ruclips.net/video/lkbl3Ar9NyQ/видео.html
In this other video recorded in an A330, we use a separate microphone so the noise level is significantly reduced : ruclips.net/video/8JCVesUhrqQ/видео.html
This was amazing Captain Joe! Happy Veteran's Day to all who served!
What a professional! And what a humble teacher to himself and to those of us who know nothing about landing one of the most beautiful aircraft in the fleet. Love it.
Great job Joe. I noticed that during the flare. Great job on keeping you hands on the controls during roll out, I noticed some commercial pilots reaching for the tiller during the roll out 👍👍😍
Pretty impressive to have this multicam setup. Can't imagine how much preparation it required. It looks like a fight sim, when you can just pick any view you want... but it's not.
I was thinking he was poking his head into the sim (somehow, beats me as to how it can be done anyway) when I saw the pix-in-pix at the beginning. Awesome video.
@@bikeny Yeah I too though we'll had a tutorial on a flight sim. I would be happy with that kind of stuff anyway.... but there he come with his cargolux 747 ^^'
Real deal boyz.
@@bikeny With how realistic flight sims are now days, I was thinking he was flying a practice sim until I read the comments and information below the video.
Okay you were literally above me! I live in northern Saarland and the planes to Luxemburg fly right above my house
I've been following your channel ever since your video on the "barking dog" of the A320 and this here is one of your most interesting videos in my opinion. I'd love to see more of that stuff! Thanks a lot for creating such awesome content!
I love these video taken in cockpit and with subs fot ATC comms which sometimes aren't well understantable (I follow some other channels which publish this kind of videos). As you say, "A good pilot is always learning" and in this video you have made a self critics to your landing, in order to improve your future landings. Thanks Capt Joe and to your colleagues to have allowed you to take this video👍👍
Firstly landing looked ok to me. What I’ve always wanted to know is why does the captain take over to taxi to stand ?
Because in most planes there is no nosesteering possible from the copis side. It‘s an option to buy when ordering an a/c but not many airlines order it.
Not 100% sure, but I believe the gate guidance lights are aligned with the captain's seat, not the gate centreline. Anyway, as a former ground engineering, that's what I've found when preparing the gate for aircraft arrival... That is, the nosewheels will track the centreline when the indications the captain is getting shows "centered".
Woman captain, I love it 💪🏿😍. We need more women in aviation. Ladies, you are welcome.❤️
Yes! Whenever I’m plane spotting and hear (you can tune in to the ATC tower and ground near the airport) a woman either in the cockpit or ATC, I’m happy! Hoping to get at least my private pilot license eventually. 💙 👩✈️
Joe, love the calm voice of the captain!
Yes we finally get to see Joe in the cockpit actually mastering his craft brilliant video I love these cockpit videos so glad you showed us this. I also didn't know your mother is British after discovering one of your older videos
Shouldn't this channel be called First Officer Joe? Lol
In my 21 years flying the 747-122, 747-SP, and finally the 747-422, I averaged about 3.5 landings a month. It's hard to put it down exactly where you want every time. But, being stable, on the numbers greatly improves your chance of a great landing. Better a little long, than a little short.
Thanks Mike! Appreciate your feedback
Fantastic Job Captain Joe! 🤗
Great landing. Good to see you’re always striving for further improvement.
Really interesting video, love your explanations and the way you present flying and piloting so simply and humbly. Thanks!
I love Captain Joe! Such a nice, smart, informative guy.
For the most of us this is a perfectly smooth landing. Very butter smooth touchdown, nice landing Joe!
Thank you for sharing. I love the 747s in general. They are so beautiful to fly on. I do miss flying on the 747-400s. So nice they are!
I think this is one of your best videos. Very informative. Loved it. Can you please make more videos like this?
Fantastic and perfect plane landing from Captain Joe. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. 🛩️🛬
I really enjoy with you captain Joe, watching your lessons on any part of flying.. thanks!
I really enjoy this kind of stuff. Fantastic video Joe, thanks!
You inspire me alot and keep my piloting dream so real, , , thank you from Kenya
My son recommended me to watch your videos because he loves airplanes and want to be a pilot. At first I wasn't interestedt in but he insisted. Now I can't stop watching your videos, the way that you explain is fascinating and also you're seem to be a kind person. I'm looking forward to watching the next video.
Greetings from Hamburg🙂
Captain Joe, I thoroughly enjoyed this video -- getting to actually see you in the cockpit landing my favorite plane (Queen of the sky - 747)!! I hope we can see more of these type of videos!! That was way too cool!! And, although you weren't completely happy with your landing, I would feel VERY safe with you as my pilot -- ANYTIME!! Love your videos -- so informative and entertaining!! Thanks, Captain Joe!! 💕✈✈💕
Thank you CARGOLUX! More videos like this please! That was a super nice landing Joe!
I came to this channel thinking “oh here we go this is how you do it all” commentary, but so impressed with the humble explanation with detailed orientation as to how the landing process works as well as owning up to a mistake and being so true. You’ve just earned a subscriber!
I love the humility of this guy, and acknowadging the lessons learned.
Hi joe another amazing video filled with loads of information. I just wanted to say I really enjoyed these sort of videos. 🧑🏻✈️✈️
Fascinating. First time I’ve seen a big jet pilot talk through the minutiae of their own landing while showing the external and cockpit views. I’ve seen lots of this kind of thing in other landing videos and you always wonder how close it is to what the pilot was aiming for.
Even if it is a safe and normal landing, it’s still interesting to see how it doesn’t quite match the ideal, why that is, and what can be done to improve it. Because surely that understanding helps you land safely in more challenging conditions.
All of your videos are 4+. I am so pleased at the wonderful analysis you provide. A good Pilot is always Learning. Many thanks.
Yes!! Perfect video!! Well done Joe! 🙏
You are my favorite RUclipsr and really want to meet you IRL and I bought your calendar can’t wait for it to come. Great video!✈️👍
Thanks Cat😉
Enjoyed that, especially the review of the landing. Cheers.
Really, lovely video
great vid! thank you cargolux for allowing captain joe to film!
Amazing video, educating and providing insight, while i cannot be a pilot in real life due to health conditions i find it enjoyable using my VR headset and a crazy Flight sim setup and more than often i like to think im in real world conditions, your videos make it seem like im being trained professionally (theres a lot more to it) but it works for me. thankyou for bringing such great content to youtube
Well done Joe. Aviation is really your passion. Happy landings.
Amazing landing!
Good job 👍 as usual capt!
thank you for this wonderful video and your detailed explanation !!
what a great review of your own performance - love your videos Captain Joe
Enjoyed the detailed explanation Capt. Joe. Thanks & Warm Regards, Denzil 🛩
