Helpful video, this is the same engine in my 2017 Audi A3. I also changed the air filter, super easy on top of engine, the long screws can stay in the lid. You can feel a gap in the screw thread. In the audi, to reset oil change go the central console, menu, car, settings, oil and service, then reset. Then it will alert again in 9000 miles or 365 days.

I agree with you on the oil filter location. It was much better on my former TDI, a 2005 Passat. That was the easiest to change oil car I ever had. My current golf is like the one in the video and that filter location leaves something to be desired.
ref: All 507.00 oils are in fact 5w-30 507.00, dual spec with 504.00 (gasoline/petrol engines), can be either 5w30 or 0w30. The older 505.01 can be 5w40 or 5w30. 506.01 is 0w30. All of our cars, not all VWs, use 5w30 so I put 504.00/507.00 in them because it has a excellent additive package.

Just done the oil change on my car (2013 Skoda Octavia 2.0 tdi cr with the 150bhp engine) and I can confirm it was as shown in the video. Thanks very much again. The only issue I had is that I can reset the oil reminder but I still get the "Service Now" message when I enter or leave the car. Any ideas how to clear that? I suspect it's the "Inspection" reminder as the oil service shows as not due for 9100 miles or 365 days. Thanks
Nicely detailed vid, perfect for my needs. Read all the comments, including from the Castrol Sales Mgr. I used an oil flush and refilled with Nulon VW spec. Actually following the proscribed maintenance schedule is more important I reckon than your choice of VW spec oil brand. I won't be losing any sleep over my choice.

Wish I would’ve watched this last week. I paid the Stealership 140 dollars for a change. I haven’t paid anyone in 16 years for a change. Guess I’ll go back to me doing it. Took them 1 hour 50 minutes.
Don't forget: if the oil shows half way or better on the hash marks it's just right. Never go over the hash marks or you can get the " reduce oil level" warning. The engine is designed to run on a specific amount...
That's one of the reasons why I like to change the oil myself - because the VW dealership ALWAYS used to overfill the oil and when I asked them, they just acted superior and dismissed my concerns. Surely they know better, I only know this little: the manual says to not overfill the oil, or it could damage the DPF or catalitic converter, (forgotten which one exactly). But why should they worry? If that happens, I pay the repair bill, they cash it in, that's good for them.
Hi Cory, This made it easy. BTW. I tried IDParts' filter drain tool. The hose ran dry and I pulled it off and oil went all over. There is probably a better way to fit a small funnel up there instead. I assume I did something wrong. I'll try it again in 10,000 miles.

Do you know if the oil filter is in the same location for a 2015 VW Golf Sportwagen tdi? Hi, thanks very much for this, it was excellent. I did the job myself on Saturday and it went straight forward thanks to your steps. One suggestion that I would add would be to tie up the pipes with cable ties, so that you can get easier access to the bottom of the oil filter when removing and refitting. thanks again,.
I've done this twice now but it didn't go very well. The only MOST CHALLENGING part was to unscrew the 13mm pre-drain plug from the centre of the filter housing. The 13mm socket just skidded over it, the 1/2" one fitted really nice and tight, but still no chance to unscrew that bastard. It takes a lot more than 5Nm to undo it, in fact I applied so much torque that I ended up rounding it, so now I have spend some £20 to replace it. Obviously you couldn't show how you did it in your video, as no one was helping you, but could you describe your experience with it? I couldn't find any other hints in the Haynes manual (they are a bit useless), but that plug has some weird flower shape things around it which clicks when it's tightened, and seems to lock it in place, like it's tamper-proof. Cheers.
Sorin Farcas - Removing that 13mm drain plug should be very easy. Someone must have really overtightened it, because it should come loose very easily. Did you end up replacing the plug then?
@@Corysdiyauto Both times I had to take the whole filter housing off, avoiding oil spillage by placing a plastic bottle upside down (after cutting off it's bottom) around the housing and passing the wrench extension through the top hole of the bottle. It's stupid but it worked. After doing this first time, then I managed to unscrew the plug, but it was still really, really difficult, even not working under the car any more. Of course I blamed the VW dealership for overtightening it on the previous service, so when I put it back I made sure to set the torque wrench at 5Nm. 9600 miles later (yesterday) I changed the oil again but run into exactly the same trouble. This time, after causing even more damage to the plug, (it's nearly round now), I just gave up and left it. It should be all right till next oil change but will need to replace it with a new one. I'm sure I read another comment here telling that they couldn't remove it either.
@@S0RINUK - Good idea with the bottle to avoid spillage! Haha. I actually never use a torque wrench on that plug. I just tighten it until it stops and I never have any issues removing it the next time. Maybe you should try that?
Hey guys idk what that oil is, ive never seen it. Could be fine, just make sure that it can take the carbon that diesels need to succeed!!!!! This is very important. Oil that doesnt take enough carbon will end up depositing it in your dpf - not a cheap fix. Much better to make sure you have the right oil imo
@Corysdiyauto that is correct, didn't mean you had the wrong oil, just never seen the stuff before! I've seen people throw all types of oil in these and have problems so I just wanted to add that. Out of curiosity, how much does that run? I know the liqui moly I use is about 80$. If it's cheaper I may swap to that

This helped a lot, thank you so much. A quock question, did you change the sealing ring of the oil drainer plug too? Mine seems to not come off, should it be changed? it does not look like regular copper sealing ring though.
Jānis - I'm glad that you liked the video. You should replace the crush washer on the drain plug every time you change the oil. It's actually made out of aluminum. If you don't have one at the moment, that's okay. You can put the drain plug back in. I've reused the crush washer more than once without any leaks, but I would definitely replace it the next time.
Immediately after oil change my check engine light came on. I soon realized I had forgotten to reconnect the plug near the oil filter. I reconnected the plug and when I started the car the next day, check engine light is still on? Do you think the plug being temporarily disconnected caused the engine light? I assumed that was the reason but it’s still there after reconnecting. Thanks so much for your videos. VERY helpful.
I would say that the disconnected plug would have caused your CEL. Just to be sure I would have it scanned and see what the code is. The light might go out on it's own since you plugged the connector back in or it might need cleared. A local auto parts store should be able to scan it for you.
Awesome , if i can remember my 2013 TDI had the oil filter on top of engine . To bad tthey changed it . Is the transmission oil change still the same as my old 2013 or was that procedure changed also ? I would do my own transmission oil on my 2013 .

My friend told me to change the oil filter and add some oil(because of the change) around 5, 6000 miles and a complete change every 10000, if undo the oil filter without touching the drain plug, would too much oil drip out or just a limited amount, do you have an idea? I plan to do it myself but if too much oil comes out, maybe I will have to buy a separate oil filter housing so the switch can be much quicker.... what you think?
adocabo Kuö - I always change it every 10,000 miles along with the filter. I wouldn't worry about changing the filter at a 5000 mile interval. I think that's unnecessary, but it won't hurt if you insist on doing it.
cool, thanks, I guess I will save myself the trouble with all that. I saw the oil gets pretty dark about 4000 miles after oil change and I thought maybe it would be good for the car.
The oil in a diesel vehicle gets dark almost instantly due to the soot particles in the oil. After an oil change, the fresh oil is mixed with the oil that is left in the engine (since you can't completely drain it all) and that causes the oil to turn black within a few minutes of startup. This is not harmful and is completely normal.
Haroon Mahmood - How did that happen? I would try to use Channellock style tongue and groove pliers and grip the outside of the plastic filter housing and then try to loosen. There's not much room under there, but give that a try. I hope that helps. I would definitely order a new housing and don't over torque it when you go to reinstall.

@@Corysdiyauto honestly mate it's a nightmare. Trying your method now it's moved ever so slightly but there's just no room. So I'm going to try and using one of them metal o rings that tighten and stick two long flatheads to give me more leverage. Fingers crossed
Good news managed to get it off. Had to result in breaking the bottom cap off in small pieces and pulling old filter out got really messy but jobs done 😊thank you for the help bud
Esteban Rápido - You're welcome! Yes, the oil turns black almost instantly after an oil change in a diesel engine. This is because of the amount of soot that the engine produces. Gasoline engines also produce soot, but at a much lower level. So, the tiny soot particles pass through gaps in the piston rings and enter the oil pan. This is why the oil turns so black so quickly. I hope this helps.

I didnt search for it too much. Its an orange rubber tube and attached to it was a little tag and what i quickly saw on it was "this revision was done....."
@@Corysdiyauto Quite a delay on this but I wonder if it was somehow related to the emissions recall 2-stage fix. I was coming here to say thanks for the video even though I found all this extra stuff that you don't have. I've owned my car since new but this is the first time I attempted the oil change. That electrical plug was a pain to undo (for me). Regarding the extra hose run and such, it has a carrier that bolts to the front of the transmission to keep it in place. I removed that as otherwise you can't wrestle the filter/housing out. Turns out one of the 3 dealers I've had service the car while on warranty has stripped the hole that this hose carrier bolts to (I know this because it was already strangely loose and you can't strip a bolt hole taking the bolt out). So I've had to zip strap it to keep it from completely flopping around, and I will likely try to re-tap and up the bolt size next time I'm under there. I'm glad @that.retro.chris got his out of the way without mishap, it is a bit of an awkward bolt to get to. Great vid, gave me the confidence/skill check I needed to make this happen. Thank you!
crossetix - The oil is draining while I am showing the oil that I chose and while I was removing the oil filter. Most people don't like to watch oil flow out of the oil pan. In my opinion, it's a waste of time to show that.
You should at least mention it :) . Some people don't know if you need to change the filter before or after draining the oil. And some ppl don't know how to drain the oil at all! @@Corysdiyauto I'm afraid you will recognise that it a bat oil after it damage your engine and especially your turbocharger, I'm using castrol to my TDI 2.0L and I'm surprised with the color of your oil just after oil change.. there are many marks that "meet" and VW 50700/50400 standard is written in theirs boxes such as Total, Liqui Moly, Averoil... but in reality they are not from high performance technology of fully synthetic oils as castrol and shell experienced mechanics said that Total is good only for engine without turbocharger
@@mrdarho4718 - Thank you for your concern, but I don't believe that Total Quartz Ineo long life oil that meets the 507.00 specification is bad for the turbo on the TDI. Everyone has their preference on oil. As long as you change it when you're supposed to, the engine will last a long time.
@@Corysdiyauto This oil does not support the extreme heat of turbocharger, it burns quickly and its accumulates until it close the holes of turbocharger lubrication ... I like TDI engine and I just want to tell the professional recommendations.. you can check the accumulate oil in the throttle body which has less heat and temperature compared to turbocharger

I've done this twice now but it didn't go very well. The only MOST CHALLENGING part was to unscrew the 13mm pre-drain plug from the centre of the filter housing. The 13mm socket just skidded over it, the 1/2" one fitted really nice and tight, but still no chance to unscrew that bastard. It takes a lot more than 5Nm to undo it, in fact I applied so much torque that I ended up rounding it, so now I have spend some £20 to replace it. Obviously you couldn't show how you did it in your video, as no one was helping you, but could you describe your experience with it? I couldn't find any other hints in the Haynes manual (they are a bit useless), but that plug has some weird flower shape things around it which clicks when it's tightened, and seems to lock it in place, like it's tamper-proof. Cheers.
Sorin Farcas - Removing that 13mm drain plug should be very easy. Someone must have really overtightened it, because it should come loose very easily. Did you end up replacing the plug then?
@@Corysdiyauto Both times I had to take the whole filter housing off, avoiding oil spillage by placing a plastic bottle upside down (after cutting off it's bottom) around the housing and passing the wrench extension through the top hole of the bottle. It's stupid but it worked. After doing this first time, then I managed to unscrew the plug, but it was still really, really difficult, even not working under the car any more. Of course I blamed the VW dealership for overtightening it on the previous service, so when I put it back I made sure to set the torque wrench at 5Nm. 9600 miles later (yesterday) I changed the oil again but run into exactly the same trouble. This time, after causing even more damage to the plug, (it's nearly round now), I just gave up and left it. It should be all right till next oil change but will need to replace it with a new one. I'm sure I read another comment here telling that they couldn't remove it either.
@@S0RINUK - Good idea with the bottle to avoid spillage! Haha. I actually never use a torque wrench on that plug. I just tighten it until it stops and I never have any issues removing it the next time. Maybe you should try that?

Hey guys idk what that oil is, ive never seen it. Could be fine, just make sure that it can take the carbon that diesels need to succeed!!!!! This is very important. Oil that doesnt take enough carbon will end up depositing it in your dpf - not a cheap fix. Much better to make sure you have the right oil imo
Use 5w-30 that meets VW's 507.00 specification. It will be on the bottle.
@Corysdiyauto that is correct, didn't mean you had the wrong oil, just never seen the stuff before! I've seen people throw all types of oil in these and have problems so I just wanted to add that. Out of curiosity, how much does that run? I know the liqui moly I use is about 80$. If it's cheaper I may swap to that

Jānis - I'm glad that you liked the video. You should replace the crush washer on the drain plug every time you change the oil. It's actually made out of aluminum. If you don't have one at the moment, that's okay. You can put the drain plug back in. I've reused the crush washer more than once without any leaks, but I would definitely replace it the next time.

Immediately after oil change my check engine light came on. I soon realized I had forgotten to reconnect the plug near the oil filter. I reconnected the plug and when I started the car the next day, check engine light is still on? Do you think the plug being temporarily disconnected caused the engine light? I assumed that was the reason but it’s still there after reconnecting. Thanks so much for your videos. VERY helpful.
I would say that the disconnected plug would have caused your CEL. Just to be sure I would have it scanned and see what the code is. The light might go out on it's own since you plugged the connector back in or it might need cleared. A local auto parts store should be able to scan it for you.

knightgangsta - Yeah, it's a bad location alright. This Golf has the 2.0 liter engine. The oil filter is about 4 inches high (103mm).

My friend told me to change the oil filter and add some oil(because of the change) around 5, 6000 miles and a complete change every 10000, if undo the oil filter without touching the drain plug, would too much oil drip out or just a limited amount, do you have an idea? I plan to do it myself but if too much oil comes out, maybe I will have to buy a separate oil filter housing so the switch can be much quicker.... what you think?
adocabo Kuö - I always change it every 10,000 miles along with the filter. I wouldn't worry about changing the filter at a 5000 mile interval. I think that's unnecessary, but it won't hurt if you insist on doing it.
cool, thanks, I guess I will save myself the trouble with all that. I saw the oil gets pretty dark about 4000 miles after oil change and I thought maybe it would be good for the car.
The oil in a diesel vehicle gets dark almost instantly due to the soot particles in the oil. After an oil change, the fresh oil is mixed with the oil that is left in the engine (since you can't completely drain it all) and that causes the oil to turn black within a few minutes of startup. This is not harmful and is completely normal.

Haroon Mahmood - How did that happen? I would try to use Channellock style tongue and groove pliers and grip the outside of the plastic filter housing and then try to loosen. There's not much room under there, but give that a try. I hope that helps. I would definitely order a new housing and don't over torque it when you go to reinstall.

@@Corysdiyauto honestly mate it's a nightmare. Trying your method now it's moved ever so slightly but there's just no room. So I'm going to try and using one of them metal o rings that tighten and stick two long flatheads to give me more leverage. Fingers crossed
Good news managed to get it off. Had to result in breaking the bottom cap off in small pieces and pulling old filter out got really messy but jobs done 😊thank you for the help bud

Esteban Rápido - You're welcome! Yes, the oil turns black almost instantly after an oil change in a diesel engine. This is because of the amount of soot that the engine produces. Gasoline engines also produce soot, but at a much lower level. So, the tiny soot particles pass through gaps in the piston rings and enter the oil pan. This is why the oil turns so black so quickly. I hope this helps.

@@Corysdiyauto Quite a delay on this but I wonder if it was somehow related to the emissions recall 2-stage fix. I was coming here to say thanks for the video even though I found all this extra stuff that you don't have. I've owned my car since new but this is the first time I attempted the oil change. That electrical plug was a pain to undo (for me). Regarding the extra hose run and such, it has a carrier that bolts to the front of the transmission to keep it in place. I removed that as otherwise you can't wrestle the filter/housing out. Turns out one of the 3 dealers I've had service the car while on warranty has stripped the hole that this hose carrier bolts to (I know this because it was already strangely loose and you can't strip a bolt hole taking the bolt out). So I've had to zip strap it to keep it from completely flopping around, and I will likely try to re-tap and up the bolt size next time I'm under there. I'm glad @that.retro.chris got his out of the way without mishap, it is a bit of an awkward bolt to get to.

crossetix - The oil is draining while I am showing the oil that I chose and while I was removing the oil filter. Most people don't like to watch oil flow out of the oil pan. In my opinion, it's a waste of time to show that.
You should at least mention it :) . Some people don't know if you need to change the filter before or after draining the oil. And some ppl don't know how to drain the oil at all! "Total" is very bad for this engine it harms the turbocharger, Castrol edge 5w30 more expensive but better. it is recommended by VW
Moh Dar - How does it harm the turbo? The oil meets the Volkswagen 507 specifications. I've been using this oil for years without any issues.

there are many marks that "meet" and VW 50700/50400 standard is written in theirs boxes such as Total, Liqui Moly, Averoil... but in reality they are not from high performance technology of fully synthetic oils as castrol and shell
experienced mechanics said that Total is good only for engine without turbocharger
@@mrdarho4718 - Thank you for your concern, but I don't believe that Total Quartz Ineo long life oil that meets the 507.00 specification is bad for the turbo on the TDI. Everyone has their preference on oil. As long as you change it when you're supposed to, the engine will last a long time.

you can check the accumulate oil in the throttle body which has less heat and temperature compared to turbocharger
