Perfect. I heard this somg so many times, it is stamped into my DNA forever. Funny how simple it is....without the awesome guitar and his vocals. He added so much over it during recording it, only to leave it all out in the end. What was left was the biggest and most unique song of 1984, 80s music's BEST year.
Prince truly makes it stand out with his vocals. It's impressive that the song didn't need a bassline, while he instead used The Linn LM-1 drum machine to fill in the lower frequencies. I agree that 1984 is up there as one of the best years for music in the 80s, arguably even of all time. Thank you for your comment!
Really highlights the lack of bass. And when you hear the finished product, it didn't need it one bit. Timesless classic that still hits the spot today.
@@DavidWright447706099886 Wow that's an awesome story! Thank you so much for sharing. Yeah Top of the Pops was huge and it was amazing to see new bands and singles pop up on that show. It's amazing that you managed to see him live 4 times! Thanks for sharing :)
This is why i want to get the dx7 more than a ps5. This thing pretty much has every top hit songs. Music is like a drug to me so that's why i want this keyboard.
Well done!!! Having grown up with these sounds in the background of family cookouts and house parties, I’m naturally drawn to their textural warmth and sonic accompaniment.
Thanks for the comment! I won't make any promises but I'd love to do a tutorial on this song someday. The drums were mostly done with Linn LM-1 and Linndrum samples. The DX7 plays a key role in the song with the 'Koto' sound from the original factory presets.
Man you REALLY took me back to 1986 with this clip, those were my 2 dream keyboards of the day but couldn’t afford them in high school until I started gigging senior years and the band would rent them out for me every week.
It actually originally had a bassline & much more instrumentation, but Prince didn't like it, so he muted a bunch of it out, the bassline bein the last. The full version is in the vault I believe.. Back then, every1 freaked out because it was unheard of in music to take out the bass, needless to say it was a serious smash on the charts for several months to almost a year, I believe.. I remember hearin it for the 1st time & seein the video.. Prince seemed like a surreal human being....literally like he was from anotha planet.. Prince was everywhere, I mean everywhere!! It was crazy!! I was 12 when this came out, it was xtremely different, but definitely bangin..!! It drew us all in, because Prince's vocals were basically the only instruments in the song over a drum machine, it made "When Doves Cry" very intimate, like he was sayin "I want u 2 hear me & only me, nothin else"....no distractions..
Very well said! He was so innovative, taking such a big risk to go against the standard 'pop' formula at the time. This truly made the song stick out among all the other hits from 1984. Since you mentioned The Vault, I was in awe (and I still am) when I heard about it. The simple fact that Prince has recorded so many tracks that could be released for the next 50 years, is insane to me. That truly shows what a great musician he was. The whole Purple Rain album was huge, and the way he learned to program the Linn LM-1 drummachine and use all of its features and quirks, is very inspiring to this day. Limitations fuel creativity, in my opinion. Thank you for your comment!
Yeah the song itself is quite simple, but Prince was very good at programming drummachines. So to me the drum patterns are amazing. I’m glad that you enjoyed it!
There's an interview on here with Peggy McCreary, she talked about how the song was originally "overproduced" until one day he went in and removed some of the synthesizer parts and the bassline.
Can I sample this for a song I’m working on? I doubt I’m gonna post it anywhere. And if I do I’ll give you credit and stuff obviously! But I still want to ask for permission!
Hey I would be interested to know what sound you are using. I don’t have the same keyboard as you but knowing what you are using can help me find the right sound
For the synth sound I’m using a Yamaha DX7. There’s a free VST called Dexed which sounds pretty much like the synth itself. The patch that I’m using for the song is ‘Koto’ from ROM 1A.
Thank you! The Yamaha DX7 truly is a special synthesizer. Unique, reliable and built like a tank. To me it's a must have if you're interested in 'that' 80s sound. You can't go wrong with any DX!
@@avace917 I'm sure that people who own an LM-1 would be able to tell the difference, but I was quite happy finding samples for it, since they seem quite rare.
It sounded pretty close to what's on the record to me. I'm personally kind of over having the sounds be exact. I just like to capture the same energy. For a while I used Linndrum samples to make Prince sounding tracks not knowing that it was mostly the LM1. You definitely got a great sound with your gear.
I still cannot believe that this video has blown up the way it did. Thank you all so much for the support! More covers are coming up very soon ;)
Thank you for sharing this with us.
@@DonnyNoMarie And thank you for watching!
Imagine if some told you they had written a hit with 2 chords and no baseline! He was a master
Haha yeah it's crazy to think that! The song really needs his awesome vocal performance and his very impressive way of programming drummachines.
Bassline!!!!
Simply incredible prince was so good, you should checkout my Chanel I did a cover song to it💫 have an amazing day!!
The thing got a lot more complicated when he added the guitar and synth solos
Exactly. His voice was the bassline melody in this song. ❤
Hearing it like this makes you realize just how much his vocals brought to his music! He was an incredible musician! Yours was well played!
Yeah you’re right! It’s nothing special without his vocals. I’m glad that you enjoyed it!
Simplicity is what makes number 1 songs. Repetitive melodies are what sticks in your head. Thus pop music needs less complex chords and structure.

In the song "Purple Rain", the Yamaha DX7 was heard.
When you listen to the song so much you start hearing the vocals even though there are no vocals
Haha yeah indeed!

Yeah I agree. It definitely is timeless!
