Thanks Anthony, that was great. There are lots of people that can tell you where to put all the knobs to get a sound like a specific record, but actually walking through how you got there is far more valuable.
Agreed! It's helping me to be able to start more patches from scratch, rather than look through 1000 presets for something "close". Tutorials are great, but him explaining the why and his thought process is far more helpful.
That's so funny... The minute I first heard that track on the radio it took me right back to the 80s. Linn drum sounds and I immediately thought 'jupiter 8' when heard that lead 😂
I'm going to say the lead sound is Prophet-5. The track was produced by Swedish hitmaker Max Martin. There are couple videos of his studio here on RUclips and he obviously has a decent collection of analog synths so it could be any of them but I've noticed he almost always goes back to his Prophet-5 which he claims is his desert island synth. There is also a Blinding Lights cover by Luke Million and he nails the sound on the P5. I've also had fun programming it on my P5 rev4. My second guess would be a Juno60/106, its what they've used for live performances of the song. But hey, always a treat to see the mighty JP8 in action!
Ah man. I met you a long time ago (early 2000s) when my friend was working on your DVD. I remember you having your studio on Highland in Hollywood. Thanks for making these videos! I enjoy them immensely!
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite channels on this platform. Thank you for these videos. I was one of the kids back in the 80s listening to Thriller on my cheap walkman. To see the man behind those sounds explaining any kind of synth work flow is a treat.
I can't begin to tell you how lucky I am to have stumbled on your channel, Anthony. I've learned so much from you and can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us.
Comprehensive and well explained. Starting with the most probable settings and making trial/error - Trial-goal (when checking different octaves, sound colour, etc) until getting the closest sound is what I usually do (with less virtuosism than you do). Thanks for these videos.
I love these videos. I found the channel after seeing Claudio do an episode from your place. I've played keys for most of my life and I'm 57 now. I remember trying to reconstruct some of what I was hearing on the radio or my favorite albums when I was a teen. I had a Rhodes EP in addition to the family piano. I wound up with some other stuff that for me came with a learning curve that my patience was limited for. I'd play my Korg Mono/Poly or my Poly 6 and try so hard to make them more musical but I was stuck on the idea that somehow these instruments were supposed to emulate something familiar when what they really were designed to do was to create something completely new. I got a Roland MT-32 and a Yamaha MT-1X and recorded my Frankenstein creations to cassette. I remember wishing that I had something to help me along. A resource to get me started. All I found were a few books and a Wendy Carlos video. If I only had youtube and people like you back then! Lol. These days I'm still playing out occasionally and my synths are collecting dust while I rely almost entirely on my Nord Stage 3. I wound up being an electrical engineer for 32 years in the FAA but I'm recently retired and spending more time with music. Much has changed and I'm not as sharp as I once was but this channel inspires me to pick up where I left off. Thanks for the awesome videos!
Thanks for taking the time to do these videos, but most importantly thank you for taking the time to talk through it. There's generations of people being taught how to create "this" sound but very rare for anyone to teach how a sound is made. Thus people aren't learning how to experiment with what they learned to create their own sounds.
Love the concept of this video! Would love to watch more examples of re-creating the sounds on other great songs! Thank you for sharing your experience & perspective, Anthony!
Just wanted to say thank you for these videos. I've been a professional musician and engineer/producer my whole adult life basically life but have always had a big hole in my knowledge of synthesisers/soundscaping and the ear training that you have put in. I do so much work with acoustic instruments, jazz, rock etc... and watching these videos is just so fascinating.
Hey anthony i just wanted to thank you again for these videos. I went to school for recording so im not new to this but i was a drummer/guitarist only at the time. The last 5 years ive gotten into synthesis and sound design, your videos are super helpful in just general knowledge of subtractive synthesis. You are the man! My room is slowly turning into your room tho i really need to get my wall spaces covered more!
please make more of these~ i feel like i'm taking a class at Berklee, haha. you're a great communicator. thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and putting this together!
You're easily my new favourite channel on RUclips! Always appreciate you taking the time to thoroughly explain everything and give plenty of context, great video. If you're open to requests, I would love to see the synths in Pendulum's Propane Nightmares deconstructed at some point!
You're a wonderful teacher. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Can't wait to take some time this weekend (no pun intended) to follow your guide and to try to recreate the sound. Thanks a lot, and much
Great video! I did a cover of this a couple years ago (it's on my RUclips channel) and I used nearly the same patch, as I recall, but I did it on a Juno-106.
Well done Anthony. When I was doing a backing track cover for this song, I used a Juno 60 plugin and it was pretty close. The Juno 6/60/106 got way too much hype recently, making them unaffordable for hobbyists (fortunately, that's not yet the case with the JX-3P and JX-8P, which I prefer to the Junos - still can't afford one :D). Btw, the bass sound from the same song has some nice harmonics in it, it might worth making a video on recreating that on a Minimoog. (I used my Behringer Model D)
Amazing video. Although not the right choice, but I had loads of fun creating this in a PRO-1 (Behringer). I had to modify the sustained notes to be a lil bit shorter for it to work better with that synth. Definitely not accurate, but it totally created this Yazoo feel. :)
Ah! A new insight I got from this is that one could use keyboard tracking to adjust how much pulse width modulation there is (for synths that have that possibility). For high notes it can be more than for lower notes.
Your Channel is like heaven, so much knowlege inside your Videos.I arranged/programmed this whole song with only 6 monophone oczillators and 2 filters on an old Commodore 64 homecomputer from 1982, would love to hear you opinion on that one 🤗
Hey Tony, looks like you have a bunch of guitar FX pedals. I think you can make several interesting videos using those and sound design ideas. I don't mean compare this to that, but actual sound design like you have done in the past videos. I could be your niche, recreate or just create new stuff. I have a banana box full of pedals, thinking of using them as well 😊
Thanks for these “how to make this sound” tutorials. It helps me programming my own sounds. Can I file a request? The pad sound from Springsteens “streets of Philadelphia “. Not typical a synthesizer oriented band. But Roy Bittan actually plays a lot of nicely blending in synth sounds.
This is funny cause such a simple sound as the intro Arp to 'Do It All Night' by Prince i struggle with. It sounds like a cutoff filtered env sawtooth re-triggered. But i still can't get it right. Maybe that's a new idea for you. Bring on Dr Fink and ask him about what Prince really used! I love the plucky chords in 'Do It All Night' too, i'm not sure if it's the same sound as the arp. It could be i guess. Also the funky synthslides he does would be neat to know how it was done. Monophonic is obvious, but if its some pitch/lfo trick that makes it sound the way it does..Hmm!
Thanks for sharing!! I have a Pro One, Xpander and a Juno 106. I love the tone on them but can I get a lot of these sounds with what I have or should I save up for another synth? Any recommendations on a next synth?
Good tutorial, who knows what the Weeknd used, maybe a plug like Serum? Or maybe he did use hardware, who knows? I think the lead has a Roland-y sound to it.
Hi Anthony, what plug-ins do you recommend for a sound like this so that it sits in a track without the resonant frequencies getting out of hand. Thank you.
Mr Marinelli, Ive been watching your videos for a while now and i wanted to ask, how do i get to your level of understanding for wave/audio synthesis? Do you have any good resources?
Thanks Anthony, that was great. There are lots of people that can tell you where to put all the knobs to get a sound like a specific record, but actually walking through how you got there is far more valuable.

Nah its the Jupiter not the prophet. Luke Million did not nail the sound. It sounds much more like for like in this video.
@theandroids Its def the p5, the jupiter is a little off as you can tell in the video, the p5 is closer to the actual recording.
@@mechanicalman4531 Nope. The song stem is labelled Jupiter Synth_02_R
@@theandroids no its not.
@@mechanicalman4531 Denial I see. Nice talk.
as a beginner who only uses basic patches / presets, this video was amazing!
thank you for sharing :)
We all began where you are. Learn as you go.
Ah man. I met you a long time ago (early 2000s) when my friend was working on your DVD. I remember you having your studio on Highland in Hollywood. Thanks for making these videos! I enjoy them immensely!
I truly appreciate your willingness to show others the intricacies of making music sounds.
This new type of video is great. I love the MJ videos but there is only so much you can make before you run out of songs to break down
I love your teaching style. Very detailed and inspiring.
This is quickly becoming one of my favourite channels on this platform. Thank you for these videos. I was one of the kids back in the 80s listening to Thriller on my cheap walkman. To see the man behind those sounds explaining any kind of synth work flow is a treat.
This has fast become one my absolute FAVORITE RUclips channels - LOVE IT ALL!
I can't begin to tell you how lucky I am to have stumbled on your channel, Anthony. I've learned so much from you and can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge with us.

love the jupiter (despite never having touched the real thing). thanks for sharing Anthony, please keep these videos coming cause we're here for it!!
These are great videos, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
So much respect for you man. Thank you for these synth tutorials
Love the modern breakdowns!
Enjoyed every second of this video, it's fascinating to learn from such an amazing synth expert. Many thanks for sharing!

Great work. And you studio is like a synth museum.
Just the pure square wave on the Jup 8 sounds beautiful all by itself with no PWM. On the recording I hear an FM bell like tone an octave up.
Thanks for taking the time to do these videos, but most importantly thank you for taking the time to talk through it. There's generations of people being taught how to create "this" sound but very rare for anyone to teach how a sound is made. Thank you once again. That sound also reminds me of Jonathan Cain's lead sound for the Frontiers record. The Jupiter 8 is just magic
Love the concept of this video! Would love to watch more examples of re-creating the sounds on other great songs! Thank you for sharing your experience & perspective, Anthony!
This was fascinating to hear you analyze and construct sounds!
Just wanted to say thank you for these videos. Juno-60 baby 🙂
Anthony, I really love your Videos! I hope you continue with this great educational and interesting content!
Anthony, man, you are the best! Ever so generous! THANK YOU for all you do.
These Videos are so awesome! I really enjoy being able to recreate sounds but also learning at the same time is the best❤ Thank you for these Anthony!
you basically inspired this song texture great stuff
Nice one, love the pwm sounds, brings me back to the 80s and programming the juno106.
I really enjoy the analytic process and then the assembly of the sound
Thanks for talking through your thought process for us
You are an amazing teacher. Keep going ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge
Well played I love that song thank you Anthony.❤

So Grateful for your Channel!! and this video is epic, cant wait to learn more !! Thankyou So MUCH SIR, YOUR AN ABSOLUTE LEGEND.
Hi Anthony - just discovered your channel yesterday. My new fav! Learning heaps. Thanks for sharing.
Best synth videos on the planet.

Great explanation of synthesis Anthony ❤
Thank you, I was able to recreate the sound on the Tal-J8 plugin and Retro Synth in Logic!
Simply brilliant.
I wish for a love button because a like just isn't enough for this guy.
Love this stuff Anthony, please keep it up!
This is so cool thank you so much for this channel Anthony !!
Jupiter 8 is beautiful! Someday 👏🏼😁
Stellar content. Love where you’re taking the channel!
Great explanation. Thanks!👍
Anthony, thank you!
Love your vids. Gonna try and get this programmed for my Kronos. 🤞🏻
Great video as always!!
😎😎😎,, ur the man, thanks for ur time and make more please, ur Master at work,
We love your videos, its good we learn how from the master :)
Nice video! I really like Waza Demension C, underrated pedal for synths IMO
I prefer your sound over the original now ;) great vid! thanks
Great video! I did a cover of this a couple years ago (it's on my RUclips channel) and I used nearly the same patch, as I recall, but I did it on a Juno-106.
Thank you for the information ! Love the Channel and your Juno
Great stuff, re-creating sounds
Amazing!
Thank you! Anthony
Your very talented I’m a big fan
Amazing

Next time I’m in LA I’m gonna go some of the places you’ve shown on your channel like perfect circuit and a couple other places that deal in synths
great video as always, thank you
Hi Anthony! I`m interested in the sounds of "The Jacksons- Victory-Album" too. Especially in the Stringsounds of "Torture" and "One more chance"
Amazing video. Although not the right choice, but I had loads of fun creating this in a PRO-1 (Behringer). I had to modify the sustained notes to be a lil bit shorter for it to work better with that synth. Definitely not accurate, but it totally created this Yazoo feel. :)
very cool Anthony thank you
They used a stock patch called “Wire Pad” from the jv or xv series Roland synths. I think your rendition sounds even better though!
You're a legend
Wish i had this 10 years ago!
Ah! A new insight I got from this is that one could use keyboard tracking to adjust how much pulse width modulation there is (for synths that have that possibility). For high notes it can be more than for lower notes.

You are Welcome!
This is so amazing, thank you so much for sharing your knowledge 🫡
I am learning so much.
I wish you would explore Panda Audios Future Impact Pedal, or Source Audio's C4 pedal.
P.S. I am an electric bass guitarist.

I would love to listen to you and Jon Hopkins having a conversation about synths.
Woww this is really awesome my friend! I enjoyed watching it 😊 I made a cover of this too btw 😄
Sir you should be knighted for that thriller work
I think they used a Juno for this sound, but I'm not 100% sure.
I love The Weeknd's music though!
please don't forget to show us the frog sound on the thriller drumbreak.
Hi Anthony, what plug-ins do you recommend for a sound like this so that it sits in a track without the resonant frequencies getting out of hand. Thank you.
Maybe a dynamic EQ?
Another great video as usual. I hope you don’t mind me asking if you could break down the bass line for Gorillaz “Feel Good Inc.” 💯💯💯💯
❤

Mr Marinelli, Ive been watching your videos for a while now and i wanted to ask, how do i get to your level of understanding for wave/audio synthesis? Do you have any good resources?
Hey Anthony M.?
Can you please help me get my songs out there?
Sounds good a little bright to my ears. I'm listening on a phone so maybe that's why.
fantastico, can you do some similar but with depeche mode and the arp2600? graciass
Cool to watch! ❤
Could you make the lead sound from I could be the one by avicii and nicky romero? 🙌🏻
Hey Anthony, can you show us how to program Michael Jacksons "Human Nature" Please!? ~Thank you
