DUANE ALLMAN, DICKIE BETTS , WARREN HAYNES, DEREK TRUCKS ALL MAESTRO'S GREAT, GREAT BAND ONE OF THE VERY, VERY BEST OF ALL TIME. PLUS GREGG ALLMAN WHAT A BAND.
Phil, your countenance during Trucks’ solo is priceless! The Blues come alive in the fingers, voices and hearts of these all-time greats! Haines and Trucks are Blues guitarists nonpareil.
Man Phil, I mean I could feel you feeling Derek’s solo! I love how you allow us see you getting high on all of these guitar masters. I love your channel and you’re a very good orator and narrator
You must be from Jacksonville as well. I went to middle school AND high school with his little sister, Lindsey. Her and i graduated the same year, 2011, and I asked her if I could meet him during graduation since she said he would be there. My girlfriend at the time lived maybe 3 houses down from Lindsey (the house Derek grew up in with his parents) so she was close with Lindsey pretty much her whole life. After we all walked across the stage my girlfriend grabbed me and said come with me. I saw Lindsey and Derek was turned around so I didn’t know who it was at first. Lindsey grabbed Derek’s arm and said “hey somebody wants to meet you” and he turned around, gave me a smile, shook my hand, and I told him how much I loved his music and this and that. I didn’t realize how tall that man was until I was in front of him. Granted I’m a short guy but he’s easily like 6’3 lol. I don’t remember much about the day of my graduation, but I’ll ALWAYS remember shaking Derek’s hand and him telling me he was proud of me for graduating. He was so humble and just an amazing person. I have another story about Lindsey’s graduation party but that one stays in the memory bank and NOT for the internet 😂
I've been fortunate enough to have seen this band numerous times at this venue(the Orpheum Theater in Boston). The sound in the building is spectacular. One of my favorites to see live.
Have had the pleasure of seeing both Derek and Warren play live - not together, but both simply amazing. Together, unbelievable, pity it won't happen again, but we can treasure gems like this till the end of time. Please find more music like this to entertain/react to please!
Absolutely mind blowing. I saw an interview with Derek where he talked about his style and influence coming from Indian ragas (so) but to me it's liquid.... watching you watch him showed your enjoyment and just being blown away... like you wanted to get closer on stage to just gawk at him. Warren Haynes is just a monster player combining so many styles into his playing. I always thought warren and Derek resurrected the allman brothers band for an unbelievable 25 year run.
An incredible amount of talent has come and gone in that Band. Rare is the breed of musicians that can be as soulful and matter-of-fact as this. They are so complimentary to each other with the voicings they use. Well chosen Fil, cheers.
Derrick and Warren, two of the best Southern Rock / Rhythm & Blues guitarist ever! I've had the privilege of watching these guys throughout the region, living here in the Nashville area several times over the last 15 years or so. The Allman Brothers Band, Government Mule, The Derrick Trucks Band, & now the Tedeschi-Trucks Band...
Fil one can tell how good a guitarist is just by your expressions. These are two of the very best. I've always wondered what goes through Derek's mind when he does his amazing solos.. wonderful video..
Fil, you have BY FAR the best and most interesting analysis of performances on RUclips! I am a very average guitar player and a huge fan of rock guitar players, especially lead players. However, you have turned me on to some outstanding players in other genres of music that I never would have seen if not for your videos. Your expertise in breaking down what each musician is doing in a technical way is great! I learn a lot from your videos, and always look forward to the next one. If I lived in the UK, I would take lessons from you.Keep up the good work!
Love Warren Haynes. Great vocalist and guitarist. I like how he works the pickups. He is constantly switching from neck to bridge to neck to middle to work the tone of his guitar. True master of his craft! Thanks Fil ,great analysis!
Both of these guys are awesome! Derek is one of the best standard tuning slide players I’ve ever heard! And Warren is the total package! Derek makes me proud to be from (and still live in) Jacksonville, FL!
The Allman Brothers band is in great hands. Derrick and Warren can deliver smokin hot blues and some damn great rock to carry on a Southern tradition. RIP Duane and Gregg. Loved this video and your commentary on it Fil. ☮
Hi Fil! Im so glad I found you but enough about that... I'm a big Allman Brothers fan, and I saw them as a teen , with Duane in Pittsburgh, back in the day,and have seen at least 15 of their shows, after his passing... Duane was surely the bands catalyst ,at the onset,& the creative "genius" that he brought to the band, was unrivaled,in not only his playing, but in the arrangements of the old blues tunes, that they built a successful career covering live and in studio...BUT.....,I saw your face as you listened to Mr Derek Trucks take us on that "Sweet ride on the Slide"....he is absolutely INCREDIBLE, & correct me if you disagree ..there is NO one, currently living on the earth, that is able to do what he does...his slide was very ,very close to the bridge pickup..! & I think you'll agree that as blasphemous as it sounds,he's is a better, more expressive slide guitarist than Duane Allman... that's coming from a guy who's followed the band almost my whole lifetime, and I cringed at the thought of even having somebody"replace"Duane,or try...but the video doesn't lie...to me its not even close. Warren is WORLD CLASS in his own right, but I'd be typing all night...I love what youre doing...& it's really cool to sit here and watch this stuff and see you on the screen having exactly the same emotional reaction as I am having... like you said ...if that solo didn't do something to you, then ....well,u either have bad hearing or you have never picked up a guitar before, and just dont get it... Once again you are doing a fantastic job... our interests are very similar... and I do have several requested all include in another comment..
This is great stuff Fil. Both are great and the technical ability of bothe of them is spot on. Both solo's do something to me. But the slide is indeed extraordinary. And the bass player killing it. What a groove pff....
As for Derrick Trucks realize he had a really good mentor Jimmy Herring. That’s where Derrick learned much of that unusual playing. Jimmy is kinda like Danny Gatton was, not really in the mainstream but revered by guitar players. Check out his band!
I can't tell you how happy it makes me to see someone doing the live stuff with the longest running, and final, lineup of the band! What a scorching band they were! I started with them in 69 in Piedmont Park (Atlanta) for free and have seen them many times since, including on the final tour in 14. What a long, wonderful journey it's been with the band responsible for the soundtrack of my life! Lots more good live stuff, with this lineup, out there!
Excellent analyses as usual. It is so pleasant to listen to your comments. I guess that this sing you analysed is one of those that is worth the whole show. 11 minutes of real blues playing. I am glad you've been alalysing many Prince's videos. I guess that we run out of good adjectives to describe certain artists due to their uniqueness. Awesome, cool, fantastic, impressive, amazing... Are not enough...
Derek always takes it to another level. Whether it's blues or something softer which makes you feel like his guitar is speaking to you. Thanks again Phil (still not sure how you like your abbreviated name spelt)
Both Waynes singing and playing are super good in this but Derek completely knocks it out of the park, some people refer to guitars as axes but that SG turns into a damn chainsaw in Dereks hands! Probably my favorite solo he's done right here, at least as of now since I haven't heard everything he's done yet haha.
My three favorite guitarists alive today....Derek, Warren and Billy. Derek is SO accurate playing slide, it’s almost like he’s fretting the notes. Such a good player. No bs, no ego....just stands there and takes care of buisness. And Warren.....wow. Such feeling, that tone, that voice. Love the man. And if you noticed, neither one of these guys played a note that shouldn’t have been there.
Billy is pretty damned insane, Billy Strings I am assuming, i also would put Brent Hinds and Stephen Carpenter in there, the best of the best. Also being an SG fanatic, I am not sure anyone ever is on Derek's level.
That moment when wood, metal, and glass come together screaming with life! Dad’s favorite slide was an old glass Coricidne D (decongestant) bottle lol.
As usual, another very cool and informative review. Just happened to stumble across both these guys on RUclips this afternoon and spotted your review. As a drummer that appreciates a soulful guitarist, rock on Phil.
Thanks for the post.... Duane was the Man of Men when it comes to slide playing ….. Derek is crazy good and fully appreciate him. Duane Allman Lives on to this day!!
Love your face when you're listening to something special. I'd love to know what goes through Derek's head when he's playing his wonderful solos. I once directed you to a version of Midnight in Harlem with Ravi Coltrane joining the TTB. Derek shows some wonderful Indian influences on this. As usual thanks Fil, Warren and Derek are simply amazing together.
The slower tempo really lets those gritty vocals and guitar solos fully stand out and "bloom". Very satisfying stuff! I'm going to watch the full original video now (recorded nearby in one of my fave venues!)
My first concert in a large venue, the Spectrum in Philadelphia, was the original Allman Brothers lineup with Duane. I’m happy to see they have continued with great players!
Warren Haynes is one of the hardest working guitarists there is. When he wasn't playing with the Allman's he was playing with Gov't Mule and if not with them pretty much anyone he could get together. I think on the rare off nights he does weddings and Bar Mitzvahs just to keep a hand in.😎
I confess, i find myself watching these greats style and cant help myself going and trying it myself. A reality sets in how gifted these guys are. Do you ever do that ?
Great review Fil. I've been a fan of The Allmans for a long time and have recently been listening to more and more Derek Trucks. So much expression and emotion in their playing... a pleasure to listen to.
Fabulous, Amazing, and I replayed this listening to it with my eyes closed. Goosebumps! I, as an old fan miss Duane and Gregg but these two certainly help with the loss. Another one of my early album purchases was The Allman Brothers Live At Fillmore East given to my Brother as a Christmas Present. Look at their hair Fil, glad they didn't feel like cutting it. Lol
Fil, really interesting video. Derek and Wayne are two of my favorite players. Their sound, phrasing and the ability to build a solo is a joy to watch.
Derek is so good. I met him and Susan at a show and they are lovely people too. Love how he moved up the chromatically near the end of his solo and then goes for another round. So great. Fil you break into a chuckle about how amazing he is. He used to tour with the Allman’s when he was 13 and they’d bring him out for two songs and he’d dual with Warren and Dickie. I think he then went onto tour with Clapton at a young age. He is in the band when Clapton and JJ Cale do that show together. Anyways awesome selection.
I'm really enjoying your analyses of blues guitarists. Very informative! I first saw Derek Trucks when he was 16, at the old Back Room, in Delray Beach, Florida. He had a halo of blond hair around his baby face and a billowy white shirt. Looked like an angel. I said, okay, so, you're Bruce Trucks' nephew. Show us what you got. And he did! Jaw-dropping.
"Sometimes my brain and mouth just don't connect" You made that statement somewhere in the comment section FIL but your great analysis and appreciation for these talented players shows otherwise 99.9999....% of the time. You have a way of expressing yourself that few of us do---including me. Another great video!
Been an ABB fan since the 70's. Doesn't matter which line-up, where they're playing, always the best, every time!! Derek has such unique style and doesn't use a pick. DANG!! Warren and Derek have that same kind of chemestry that Duane and Dickie did...just incredible. Thanks, again!
You nailed it again, Fil! Your passion for the skill is so obvious. That's what I like most about your videos. Quality always surfaces to the experienced ear. No matter what the style. Genre becomes kind of obsolete when you simply want to hear top notch musicians. You make that very, very clear. Can't thank you enough for that. P.S. as a big Allmann Brothers fan myself, I DO appreciate you revisiting them though ;-)
Another great analysis, Fil. I really look forward to each new video that you do. These two really are great players and, as you said, Warren Haynes also has a great voice.
I remember seeing them all through the 90’s and 2000’s. Was never a let down. Of course they played their classics but would also bust out unexpected covers that knocked your socks off as well.
hahaha.....watched it again....I agree....if that solo doesn't move you to your core then you must be the type of person friendly dogs growl at. :-) God given talent.
Just made me miss SRV even more. They played this song, sung by SRV, twice the day he died. Had to pull over and calm myself. Thank you Derek, Warren and ‘Sir’* Fil with a F for this! SRV is smiling. * Tip-o-The-hat to Sir Brian May
Fil, Thanks so much for your ❤️! I know my (hard to say this) paralyzed music friend would love this analysis/video and am sure he knows of Derek and Warren. He once told me, while playing at a Holiday Inn in Ventura, CA, Dickie Betts was in the crowd and came up to play with his band. Take care always sweetheart, Marianne ‘ROCK’!! 🤟
I saw ABB way back in the 70's at the Orange Bowl in Miami and many years later at the 2007 Wanee Fest in Live Oak, FL. The show in Miami didn't make nearly the impression on me that the Wanee Fest shows did. Not only was Wanee a more intimate setting but ABB closed the festival both nights, played for a total of almost 5 hours and never repeated a song over those two nights. Derek and Warren were magical together and the entire band was in rare form. I was not very familiar with Warren and didn't know Gov't Mule but I became an instant fan of both. Warren's musicianship and ability to go back and forth seamlessly between Gov't Mule and ABB was nothing short of unreal. And having Susan Techedeski there playing with Derek in their band was icing on the cake. Best weekend of music I have ever witnessed! Thanks for another great choice Fil, well done.
Great analysis Fil. And outstanding song selection... Gorgeous Gibsons at work. Two of my favorites. The faces you make while watching Derek are great.. HAHA .. I caught myself twisted and contorted as if on a roller coaster or something.. caught myself. He's truly amazing. And Warren .. as you mentioned his voice does tend to fly under the radar.
Oh that slide playing does it alright. Derek is massively off the hook. Just beautiful, original playing. And in a style where it's so hard to say something new, while still having it be the real blues. Mission accomplished.
I'm so glad these doods keep the Allman Bros. tunes alive....Course Duane Allman and his brother were the one's along with Dickey...aw geez all the band members were so awesome.Fun tunes....very improv material....like just go for hours kinda like Cream...
I caught Gov't Mule a while ago (probably Summer 2017). About an hour or so into the set Warren's playing moved into a realm I don't think existed before from anyone else. Not speed or showmanship, but pure music exploring new territory. I don't have the gifts to describe it adequately, but the phrasing, harmony, and movement were something I have never heard anywhere or anytime. It was not just another style. I'm not sure I have ever been so impressed, even at top Jazz gigs. I hope others get a chance to experience it. (The concert was at the Peoria, Illinois riverfront and the transformation was after dark.)
Damn that sounds cool and intriguing as hell......I'm gonna keep my eyes peeled for him doing somethin live after this white stuff melts off. Thanks for the heads up.
I had a similar experience back it the 70's. It didn't feel like I was in a different realm. It seemed like my senses expanded and I could feel all emotion and nuances of the music it brought me to tears. After the concert ended it's never happened again. Were their drugs involved yes probably a 6 pack of beer on the way to the concert.
Yes Fil!! I've been waiting the longest time for you to react to Derek Trucks. You couldn't have picked a better video, this version of the ABB is nearly as good as the original lineup.
I've been a HUGE Warren Haynes fan ever since he joined the ABB in the late 80's. They aired a live performance on VH1 to promote Seven Turns. I was blown away at his slide guitar solos.
The Allman Brothers with these two did a cover of 1983 by Hendrix that blew me away ...... I didn't think it was possible.... Fantastic!!! Kudos to the band.....
A friend of mine an I travelled down to Macon , Georgia, to visit The Big House-the place the Allmans lived in the beginning. Now a museum...a shrine...to this great band. Derek and Warren are such perfect fits for that band, keeping the flame alive, while building upon the rich history, and putting thier own stamp on the Allman Brothers. Few bands exist from the old days, having remained relevant, that give such awesome shows (Santana being another). Great video, as usual.
I mixed Derek Trucks monitors way back when he was playing small venues, just after his first album came out. It was at a community arena in Calgary. Shook his hand and course had interaction during sound check. Great player, and a very cool guy.
WOW WOW WOW!!! Watching your vids is NOT helping me to fall asleep as I lay in bed with my headphones on trying not to wake my partner haha. Both these guys are absolute monsters!! And Derek’s solo!! 😳😳😳🔥🔥🔥 And, as usual, another great review. I’m an experienced brass musician but am a newbie at the guitar and I learn so much from you about skill levels and what I’m TRULY hearing so that I can have a much greater appreciation for it (as if I didn’t already lol). I’m an SRV guy through and through but once again...wow!!
I saw Derek Trucks at least 4 or 5 times around 91-93. He was playing a red SG back then too. It looked bigger than him. He used to travel from north Florida to central Florida to play in clubs, once was at a college. All his band mates were adults but, while he was shy, he never seemed out of place musically. He was obviously a special talent destined for good things. Between sets he would sit at a table in back of the club with his mother looking at his baseball cards. I'm glad to see him so successful and respected among musicians today.
He has such an amazing feel for the music...his phrasing is unreal. His right hand playing style...no pick...is baffling. What a truly gifted player.
No matter how many times I watch this, I feel like I'm having a heart attack. Axman virtuosity all round! And that blond ponytail? Dear God in heaven!
That was one of the most mental slide solos ever. Dude is on a different level
Unbelievable.. would rather say poetic than mental ;)
Derek Trucks is the best slide player walking this Earth.
👍
I agree 100%. And 2nd place isn't even close.
Close. Sonny Landreth is my No 1. He's pioneered techniques that others are only now starting to incorporate like fretting behind the slide.
He looks like he is playing to kill the guitar it gives my CHILLS he is fire🔥
He's an alien...not human lol
DUANE ALLMAN, DICKIE BETTS , WARREN HAYNES, DEREK TRUCKS ALL MAESTRO'S GREAT, GREAT BAND ONE OF THE VERY, VERY BEST OF ALL TIME. PLUS GREGG ALLMAN WHAT A BAND.
Phil, your countenance during Trucks’ solo is priceless! The Blues come alive in the fingers, voices and hearts of these all-time greats! Haines and Trucks are Blues guitarists nonpareil.
These guys are all grades....but Derek gets me everytime with that masterful slide work. Just a master!!
👍
The folks in that audience have just been completely slayed .
Got to see Allman Brothers with Derek Trucks band back in 2006/2007? Such an amazing performance. I was floored by their skills.
Man Phil, I mean I could feel you feeling Derek’s solo! I love how you allow us see you getting high on all of these guitar masters. I love your channel and you’re a very good orator and narrator
Thanks!
The first time I saw Derek play he was 11! Mind blowing. It's been a journey to watch him grow. You get it. I love it.

Two of my favorites.
You are the best at these analysis videos Fil....great work.
I brake out in full body goosebumps every time Derek cuts loose. It doesn't matter how many times I hear the track.
Derek and Warren have that incredible ability to to play together, they FEEL each other's music.
And the rest of the band, WOW!!!
I've been fortunate enough to have seen this band numerous times at this venue(the Orpheum Theater in Boston). The sound in the building is spectacular. One of my favorites to see live.

Nicely done Phil I was lucky enough to see the Allman Brothers decades ago
Derek is SO GOOD it's mind boggling! Great commentary as always.
How good is this performance? As good as it gets!!
An incredible amount of talent has come and gone in that Band. Rare is the breed of musicians that can be as soulful and matter-of-fact as this. They are so complimentary to each other with the voicings they use. Well chosen Fil, cheers.
No problem!
when an artist watches another artist and cannot stop smiling...
Fil, I love watching your face, when you like myself see a guitarist play, well it brings me joy!! Great Job!!
Same, he's so hot as well!
I agree - that's why I subbed was the appreciation and joy of the craft. Peace!
Thanks!
I agree. I catch myself making similar faces, only to see Fil making them too.
This is definately my fav RUclips channel....Love all genre of the ABB...And all their solo stuff too...you nailed it again Fil....ROCK!
Solos were over the top. Explanation of the solos from Fil....PRICELESS!

Cool!

Derek does the same 😉

Great review Fil. I've been a fan of The Allmans for a long time and have recently been listening to more and more Derek Trucks. So much expression and emotion in their playing... a pleasure to listen to.
I've always loved how warren drops his hand after playing a ripping lick, it's so cool
And gives a little "wipe" on his pants leg. Gotta wipe that fire off! He will often "wipe" before launch too!
That's a man who puts every bit of himself into every note he plays. Both of these guys.
Thanks Paul!
Yeah Derek is crazy good!
Saw Derek play a club when he was 12. He was already phenomenal
Good God Almighty, Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks are on a whole different plain.
They are both amazing players and musicians never get tired of Derek or Warren great job!!
👍
"Sometimes my brain and mouth just don't connect" You made that statement somewhere in the comment section FIL but your great analysis and appreciation for these talented players shows otherwise 99.9999....% of the time. You have a way of expressing yourself that few of us do---including me. Another great video!
Thanks!
👍
The Blues like it goes. Derek Truck's is awesome. Seen him on a lot of other videos and just now learned his name. They were great together. Very raw!
Thanks!
Great band, good to see you showcase the real pioneers. ROCK
🤘
Warren: played slide to Dickey and without slide to Derek. Pretty incredible.
Warren is just great.....that’s all I can say
Warren Haynes is truly a gifted musician, but I can tell you in person that he is one of the kindest people I've ever met....
Another great analysis, Fil. I really look forward to each new video that you do. These two really are great players and, as you said, Warren Haynes also has a great voice.
Thanks John!
Love your videos. You appreciate what I appreciate and your commentary is spot on.
Thanks!
I remember seeing them all through the 90’s and 2000’s. Was never a let down. Of course they played their classics but would also bust out unexpected covers that knocked your socks off as well.
👍
Love the looks on your face during Derek's slide solo!!! Best damn slide player I've ever heard!!!
hahaha.....watched it again....I agree....if that solo doesn't move you to your core then you must be the type of person friendly dogs growl at.
Thanks Fil Allman Brothers fan since the 70s
Thanks Fil, that made my day, just wonderful. You've also turned me on to musicians I wasn't aware of, thanks again.
No problem!
Cool!
Beautiful work Fil... always inspiring
Thanks Steve!
Two Olympians on six-string. Derek is slicing the fretboard apart.
Thanks!
Oh that slide playing does it alright. Derek is massively off the hook. Just beautiful, original playing. And in a style where it's so hard to say something new, while still having it be the real blues. Mission accomplished.
Thank you, Sir. Your explanation really elucidates the entire structure of playing guitar. I learned a lot from your video.
Cool!
Luther Allison could do it, just ascend to another level playing live. When that happens it’s f-ing transcendent.
@Mike Forti Comparisons are odious......how do you judge ??
Both are amazing. Derek's slide in particular is amazing.
👍
His soul in every note played...
Yes Fil!! I've been waiting the longest time for you to react to Derek Trucks. You couldn't have picked a better video, this version of the ABB is nearly as good as the original lineup.
Thanks!
HI FIL. THAT WAS GREAT. VERY GOOD SHOW YOU DO. LOVE IT THANKS. YOU ARE THE BEST. STAY SAFE OUT THERE. PEACE AND LOVE
I've been a HUGE Warren Haynes fan ever since he joined the ABB in the late 80's. They aired a live performance on VH1 to promote Seven Turns. I was blown away at his slide guitar solos.
Cool!
The Allman Brothers with these two did a cover of 1983 by Hendrix that blew me away ...... I didn't think it was possible.... Fantastic!!! Kudos to the band.....
👍
I love that you have such a great appreciation for excellent musicians. Like the comment below, seeing you smile makes me smile.
Cool!
Derek Trucks is truly at that top tier level of guitars . 🎸
WOW WOW WOW!!! Watching your vids is NOT helping me to fall asleep as I lay in bed with my headphones on trying not to wake my partner haha. Both these guys are absolute monsters!! And Derek’s solo!! 😳😳😳🔥🔥🔥
And, as usual, another great review. I’m an experienced brass musician but am a newbie at the guitar and I learn so much from you about skill levels and what I’m TRULY hearing so that I can have a much greater appreciation for it (as if I didn’t already lol). I’m an SRV guy through and through but once again...wow!!
Thanks Michael!
Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes BOTH underrated as entertainers
👍
THESE GUY'S ARE JUST AMAZING MUSICIAN'S FANTASTIC BAND THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND WE MISS YOU ALL MY FRIEND'S GOD BLESS YOU ALWAY'S.
Just to add such a great point you made about Haynes singing so under rated
Louie Louie True! It bothers me not which version of Soulshine whether Allman Bro's or Hayne's with Mule.
Cool!
I saw him about the same time when he played in Daytona at the Bank and Blues bar on Main Street.
@@retiredguyadventures6211 Sam's Woodshed in Casselberry for me, and once at Rollins College on the soccer field👍
