My favorite song from Blind Faith only album. Remember it from childhood. Play drums on it every band I was ever in. Steve Winwood is underrated as the guitarist only because he so excellent on vocals and keyboards. Nice to hear you talking about the music and this time no dazzling guitar wizardry. So important to have a good song before you can play great solo's. For me Steve is one of the greatest songwriters of British rockmusic. As soon he joined the Spencer Davis group at the age of 15 they had 3 masssive hits and instead of going for more succes he started Traffic to find new directions. Mith Mitchell said in an interview; "we as Jimi's band would have played with Steve anytime and anywhere". That says it all I think. Speaking of Hendrix, Winwood played organ for 'Voodoo Chile' on the 'Electric Ladyland' album in '68, and sang the backing vocals for 'Ezy Ryder' on the 'Cry of Love' album in '71.
As a guy who started learning solos before anything else, I can't say I disagree with this at all. Harder to work back to the basics than the other way around lol
I think it IS dazzling guitar wizardry to play softly with such a feel for the music and such finesse ! I know what you mean in your comment , but this talent level is more rare and harder to find than it is to find someone who can rip out a bunch of notes.
Steve sounds exactly as he did when he was 15 years. What a great singer. I was a huge Traffic fan. Saw them a couple times. I'd wanted so much to see Blind Faith, but the stars weren't with me. You notice nobody's stepping on anyone else. Everyone is on the same page. Making beautiful music. Thanks Fil. I've got all three bands including Spencer Davis loaded into the breech for tomorrow.
I have this on DVD. It is for a great cause. Eric Clapton's rehab center in Antigua. A stellar lineup of musicians. I saw Eric Clapton once live, I saw Derek Trucks twice live, with the TTB and I saw Steve Winwood twice live, when he was opening up for Tom Petty. Great version of the Blind Faith tune, that Steve Winwood wrote. Many think of Steve Winwood as a keyboard player. He is a great guitarist and plays many other instruments. He is a great singer too, and also a great producer. Arc Of A Diver had Steve Winwood write all the songs, play all the instruments and he produced the album. That's how great Steve Winwood is. Thanks for this analysis. Cheers Fil!
Great comments like usual Fil! I LOVE your comment saying, There's 4 guitarists playing, this could turn into a real mess. HA. Yeah It sure could but it didn't ,.. become a runaway train and derail, it was GREAT because of what Fil said, : These guys care about the music!! Now because of you, I appreciate why these artists are so talented. It doesn't hurt that you are also really attractive! Ann
The tone of Steve's guitar on this video is superb. It's great to have these three guitarists weaving their sounds together. I have this concert on DVD, and I can't tell you how many times I've played this song over and over and over. Its beautiful.
In my late seventies now and using the time to understand music. This is one of my most favourite tracks, but I also love Yvonne Elliman's version and Steve's acoustic version. I'm learning it on the piano and it brings such fulfilment. Thanks. Simon T
When you said Clapton only plays fast when the track needs it, I was reminded his moniker "Slowhand" is for a reason. Sweet analysis, btw. You're right, it never sounds muddy. It breathes all the way through.
Excellent commentary Fil! Steve Winwood is an incredible musician. I've been a fan since '66. The sound of that Hammond B-3 played through a Leslie on 'Gimme Some Lovin' was incredible. It's too bad that the Leslie isn't used as much as in the past. I suppose the Uni-Vibe phase shifter had a lot to do with that. Winwood was heavily influenced by the great Ray Charles.
Yes and a B-3 with a Leslie is an incredible pain in the ass to haul around on tour! Poor roadies! A Hammond B-3 weighs 425 pounds and the Leslie weighs 140 pounds.
The unknown of music, combine a classic song, major gifted talent, great live mix and that total element, when the sound takes on a life of its own. On the video you see it at the end, when Winwood gives each side that look. They all knew, smiles, and no words needed.

Wow! What a festival I missed.just think of all the music that has been written since I was born in 1954...the year rock was born...and I will die with rock in my heart! Thanks Fil, for giving this old rocker a kick ...my generations at its best!
What a great song and excellent analysis as usual. Absolute legends on stage together. I was pleasantly surprised one evening to be flipping channels and caught the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival. Eric and Steve teamed up in Dear Mr. Fantasy, absolutely amazing, my favorite version of that tune.
This has been my long-time favourite live version of Blind Faith's gem that many people don't know about, thanks for covering it, Fil (even though I'm few years late since the upload)! Top job as always, your videos are very enjoyable and educational.
I love Stevie Winwood since he was a 15-year-old Kid singing Give Me Some Lovin' in Spencer Davis group when it first came out. Then Traffic, Blind Faith, and have always loved this song.

@@Bear78420 According to Steve Winwood he burst into prominence in 1963 at the age of 15 with the Spencer Davis Group. The band enjoyed a string of chart-topping hits by way of such enduring classics as “Gimme Some Lovin'”, “I'm A Man”, and “Keep On Running”.
Those drums, so clean, the guitars working off one another... Everything here works beautifully. As always, your analysis reveals your love of music. Best!
You can hear the seasoned brilliance from these guys playing!!! Amazing how if you close your eye you can hear Clapton as he just lifts the song , sensational lead lines! How good is Steve Winwood!!! Total enjoyed this!!! 🤘🤘🤘
I've been deep diving on your older analyses for a few weeks. This is one of my favorite performance of this song. It's one to play while cruising at night - volume turned up/windows down. The head room you mentioned is what makes it addictive for me although I never consciously focused on it. I love how Willie Weeks' base line is such a quiet driving force.
I had the pleasure of seeing Steve Winwood live back in the late 80's early 90,s ? In Seattle Washington. Great show. He played songs from Blind faith, traffic, Spencer Davis and from his most recent records: Back in the High Life: such a great musician ,singer and songwriter 👍😎
Right on Fil! One of the first things I learned about music is if you want to be a great musician you not only shine on a lead but you also shine as an accompanist. Which means you are not adding less to the music but you are adding more by supporting whomever is on lead with the "right" notes at the right time etc. and therefore never stepping on or into the lead's territory. Rather you are enabling him to also shine by adding just the right touch of "flavor" to not only what the lead is playing, but to the song itself. Also very super important, and I'm in complete agreement with you, is playing for the sake of the music itself only! This is the difference between a musician and an outstanding musician!! I've seen enough over the years to notice that musicians (and bands) that play for any other reasons (imho) do not stand out as a wonderful or innovative musicians, and as for bands, they do not stay together very long. Conflicts always arise within the band.
That was so “comfortable” to the ear, so well blended (where no one stood out from the rest). Only Legends like these guys could deliver such quality. It makes me proud to have been brought up in this music....Thanks to the fifth formers at my old boarding school!!
My go to video for my favourite Stevie song (and there are loads to choose from!) to boost the day. Evergreen. Saw him play this live in Bristol just a few years ago. Sublime.
My favorite Winwood song! I saw him open for Tom Petty several years ago and he did this version of Can't Find My Way home. It's great, but the original is so sad and haunting.
Me too. I saw Steve Winwood open for Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. I saw him back in the late 1980’s in a high school auditorium outside of Cleveland. That concert was supposed to take place downtown Cleveland but the weather was so horrific with snow and blowing and ice that it was moved to a smaller venue. Can you imagine sitting 10 feet away from Steve Winwood playing low Spark of high heeled boys? That was one of my favorite concerts ever. Phenomenal.
Fil, Such a good analysis, , , Both EC and SW are superb talents, both have been my idols for many years- but when they get together something VERY special happens, , , Add Mr Trucks to the mix and this is what you get! Not only did these guys ‘nail it’, so did you! Timeless! Just keep doing what you’re doing!
I was in the audience for this show. The tickets were a birthday gift from my sister. It was a great day and night in Chicago that day. It was perfect!
That was great, I've had the privilege of seeing Steve Winwood live several times & I saw Eric Clapton once, they are both great talents each in their own way. Thanks!
Way back in the mid 80s I bought the 'Hurry Sundown' album on vinyl after hearing a rumour that The Outlaws were a great guitar band and I wasn't disappointed !
I have the original vinyl of this album...Blind Faith was one group that influenced me when I was young...this song has a special place for me!!! You are awesome for picking the people you analyze, Thank you!! I'm so fortunate to have grown up in this era of music!!
Excellent review, and this is one of the videos in my playlist. The dynamics of this performance are so brilliant, absolutely love it. Hey, don't forget about the bass player as well. Willie Weeks is a monster bassist - his playing back in the Donnie Hathaway days is legendary!! Thanks again WofP...
Far and away my favorite Blind Faith song. I have another Crossroads version on my stick that plays in my car. Great analysis Fil. Lots of great players on this stage.
As you said, the way they all can play in total equilibrium with one another is amazing. Knowing when to let off and let the other take point, and knowing what tone to use to compliment with the other players and current vibe is amazing.
I saw Winwood and Clapton with Blindfaith and the sound of Windwoods' voice I will never forget coming over the loud speakers and everytime I hear him now. I am so lucky to be living at a time when it was popular not that its not popular now. Music that makes you float in sound Also saw John Mayall
Fil, like some others, I'm hanging out for your analysis of Spencer Davis Group (hopefully "I'm a Man" or maybe "Gimme Some Loving")!! Those amazing intros (and of course Steve Winwood's singing&playing) are SUCH a big part of my wonderful 60s memories and hearing them, even today, still raises my excitement in expectation of the great music I know is about to come!! RjB
Clapton is always at his best when he plays or records with world class musicians. His best albums were with Winwood and Duane Allman. Willie Weeks on bass played on some of the greatest albums ever recorded. On drums is Ian Thomas from Wales England is another session musician that has recorded and played with some of the best. And Chris Stainton on Keyboards another Brit from Sheffield whom first hit the scene playing with Joe Cocker on the Mad Dogs album and tour. This group has so much talent and are in a class of their own.
hello Fil,i loved win wood since I was a kid.people don't realize that Steve can play almost any instrument and that soulful voice makes you stop and listen.i seem to remember that Steve played all instruments on his solo album ARC OF A DIVER.What a great album.Side note besides Eric's playing, people forget he too has a great voice.i saw them in concert and was like a kid again.i just hope music will continue like they did it.thank you for the video.
I appreciate what Fil shows on his channel,I hope you show younger music lovers what is now rarely seen or heard like in the past. Thanks to Mydailybread7. Yes “Arc” is as good as it gets.
Amen Brother--I took care of a toddler for a special time in my life-He knows the Delfonics, Cream, Elvis, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Kinks, Beatles and on.....He would dance or sleep to this music. Cheers, Ann (ps I appreciate Fil's gift and passion as well).
Steve comes back on stage later and does a crushing solo performance of "Dear Mr Fantasy". Ive watched both of these videos more than 20 times because they are so perfect.

👍
Learned more, and more about you, in this vid than many I've watched 'til now. It is a brilliant collaboration, I agree.
Great pick of live versions, which has been my favorite for some time. Nice to hear your spot on analysis.
These are some of the great musicians of our time. As always, a fabulous teaching, Fil!
Sublime.
I love the way they play together
I LOVE this performance! So smooth.
👍
this gives me the chills every time
👍
Agreed, Phil! Great teaching. These guys are some of the best!
Thanks!
My apologies. I meant Fil.
Damn, Fil! Your subscription numbers are growing very quickly. Congrats!
Thanks yeah it's going in the right direction!
My favorite Winwood song! I saw him open for Tom Petty several years ago and he did this version of Can't Find My Way home. It's great, but the original is so sad and haunting.
Cool!
Phenomenal.
@@bobwowk8440 I think I saw him on that same late 80's tour. I remember it as one of the best shows i've ever seen.
Fil,
Such a good analysis, , ,
Both EC and SW are superb talents, both have been my idols for many years- but when they get together something VERY special happens, , ,
Add Mr Trucks to the mix and this is what you get!
Not only did these guys ‘nail it’, so did you!
Timeless!
Just keep doing what you’re doing!
Loved the live feed tonight!
You took everyone's good natured ribbing like a champ!!
(and those drummer jokes...lol)
😂
I was in the audience for this show. The tickets were a birthday gift from my sister. It was a great day and night in Chicago that day. It was perfect!
Cool!
You left Me no choice but to hit the Like button on this one , You dissected this song so beautifully. These guys put on such an amazing performance.
Thanks!
Beautiful, this song holds a special significance to me, in my life events.
That was great, I've had the privilege of seeing Steve Winwood live several times & I saw Eric Clapton once, they are both great talents each in their own way. Thanks!
Cool!
I can tell you enjoy this. Good early memories for you!
Yes the outlaws Huey Thomasson and the boys either Freeborn Man or Green Grass. And High Tides or Hurry Sundown check em out .
Way back in the mid 80s I bought the 'Hurry Sundown' album on vinyl after hearing a rumour that The Outlaws were a great guitar band and I wasn't disappointed !
The 'Florida Guitar Army'...Hughie Thomasson, Henry Paul, Billy Jones. Thomasson is a member of the Fender Hall of Fame.
@@pbracey1 absolutely right rock on
And Freddie Salem on Bring it back alive .
Just found this after asking you to add Steve to your video collection. This is one of the best! Thank you Fil!
I have the original vinyl of this album...Blind Faith was one group that influenced me when I was young...this song has a special place for me!!! You are awesome for picking the people you analyze, Thank you!! I'm so fortunate to have grown up in this era of music!!
Cool!
No problem!
Far and away my favorite Blind Faith song. I have another Crossroads version on my stick that plays in my car. Great analysis Fil. Lots of great players on this stage.
Fil, your smile SLAYS. (Throwing out a little appreciation for you.) Thank you for doing what you do. Your passion shows.
Thanks!
If I closed my eyes before the clip, I could identify each one of them. This was great! Thanks, Fil!
👍
As you said, the way they all can play in total equilibrium with one another is amazing. Knowing when to let off and let the other take point, and knowing what tone to use to compliment with the other players and current vibe is amazing.
👍
What a really smooth track! So nice to listen to. Nice post. Thanks!
No problem!
Superb breakdown on the tone and sublime power in the dynamics here.
Thanks so much Phil
hmmmm...........I think he spells it FIL
No problem! Yeah auto correct doesn't like my name!
Grew up listening to Clapton & Winwood. Amazing players & singers! Great video!
Feels so good, drummer and bass player are like honey
Fil, like some others, I'm hanging out for your analysis of Spencer Davis Group (hopefully "I'm a Man" or maybe "Gimme Some Loving")!! Those amazing intros (and of course Steve Winwood's singing&playing) are SUCH a big part of my wonderful 60s memories and hearing them, even today, still raises my excitement in expectation of the great music I know is about to come!! RjB
Indeed, this is a great version of the wonderful song. Nice work Fil! Keep it up.
Thanks!
What a stage full of talent. Love your analysis and btw Fil you would fit right in with them.😍😚💕
There is never enough to say about these guys. Another great analysis Fil.
Thanks Melissa!
Great video..man I miss great musicians..everything repeats itself..please hurry and bring this back
Clapton is always at his best when he plays or records with world class musicians.
No problem!
"cause my rock in roll is putting on weight" Arc of a Diver the best!
Wow. What an amazing performance! Excellent video Fil.
👍
This one gave me chills. It is so good. ❤
Steve comes back on stage later and does a crushing solo performance of "Dear Mr Fantasy". Ive watched both of these videos more than 20 times because they are so perfect.
Great lick ,Clapton and Winwood . Derek Trucks is such a great player in his own right . All the crossroads and the Clapton /Winwood live cd's are amazing .
