Wow! You always come up with uniquely skilled guitar players. Shades of Roy Clark and Jimi Hendrix psychedelic country playing there- very impressive!👍
I was one of the drummers for JR Brown during 97 through 98. This song was one of my favorite song's to play and the rhythm is fairly quick. I always liked playing the ending of this song because it was so solid and to the point. There were a lot of times he would really stretch out the music and improvise and you had better be paying close attention. There was no room for slacking off and you had better be on your toes every night. Sometimes during a show he would play a blues style song and he would really stretch it out and go into this jazz blues type improvisation and you never knew what he was going to do with it or where it would go. You would just let the music flow and go with what was being played. It could get very interesting when this happened because none of it was ever planned and it was different everytime. JR is not limited by just one style like everyone thinks. He can play Rock, Blues,Jazz, Hawaiian, Old style country, and he plays it all exceptionally well. I was soaking wet after every show. It was a pretty tough gig at times but very satisfying and rewarding. I learned a lot from him.
@@chasvonplatten1298 Imagine what it must've been like for Stevie Ray Vaughn's band mates. So much of Jazz and Blue's, is improvisation and that's why it seems so effortless. You're going with the flow, even though you know where you're going, these guys still took you on crazy detours. Fun stuff.
Junior Brown had some crazy skills on the guitar. There are more technical tricks than most people can notice. Thanks for analyzing this incredible artist.
I must admit I have never heard of him before and I'm 63. I thought I knew everything, now I know I don't. I love his guitar playing. Thanks for introducing him. Thanks for posting Fil.
Here’s another you’ve never heard of and should hear the great Scotty Anderson from Cincinnati and a monster tele player that can do anything worlds best guitarist right now in my opinion along with junior brown
Junior's talent is mindboggling! I've seen him live a bunch of times and he never disappoints with his mix of blending techniques and genres. Fil, you should do a video that features the 8-string steel, and the way he effortlessly switches between that and the 6-string - while singing. Talk about levels of complexity! Thanks for another great video!
True story. I've lived in Austin for 56 years, and had a favorite neighborhood tavern named 'Henry's' where friends and my wife and I would meet for an occasional few pitchers of ice cold brew. One day, back in about the early 90's my friend called me and asked if my wife and I would like to meet him at Henry's and listen to some live music -- some guy named Junior Brown was playing there for free -- we had no idea who he was, but what the heck, free music and cold beer! About the second pitcher, Junior showed up with Ms. Tanya, a stand up bass player, and a drummer with just a snare drum. There weren't but about 30-40 people in the place. That night we all became avid Junior Brown fans -- I was completely blown away by one of the best live musical performances I've ever seen. Junior is a unique, Texas classic.
Glad you did a "Junior Brown Clinic" video Fil! He is one of my favorite pickers and also does some great Surfing classics like Miserlou that I enjoy quite a bit. Many thanks for this one!
I didn't know anything about Junior until I saw one of the You Tube videos about a year ago. This guy has way too much talent for just one person. He has combined talent and showmanship and taken it to a very high level. Junior and Tanya Rae are currently doing at home concerts live on You Tube on a regular basis since he can't tour. He is breaking in a new rig at this time. Thanks for the break down Fil.
I was more than impressed with the way you broke down all these parts and the techniques involved. Damn you're no slouch on the guitar either. Loved everything about your coverage of this Junior Brown dude.
Thanks for this, Fil! I've listened to him for a long time, it's the passion he puts into every note combined with his command of technique that is so energizing. He channels that passion through the his guitsteel in every song.
Why so serious, Fil? The look on your face as you're watching is priceless. You're so right. There's sooo much going on with his playing style, it's hard for even an accomplished musician to catch. What an extraordinary musician! Great analysis! 🤘🇨🇦
I have to admit that I'm a little bit freaked out watching him play. It's one thing to hear it, but actually watch him fly through all these notes and chords with his picking technique is something of a mind blower.
What a great talent Jr. Brown is! He is an astounding guitarist! I rate him right up there with the other Guitar God's and he takes a backseat to no one!
Phil I enjoy all your reviews and teachings about the musicians and how they do it, I can’t play a lick but I can listen with the best of them and you explain how it done wonderfully Thanks!
I noticed him grabbing a machine screw and making a tune adjustment on that string. What amazes me about that is how his hearing can be so keen to detect it and get it tuned where he wants it without even missing a lick on his performance, and we the listener not even noticing anything was off to begin with. I've seen other performers do it, but it's still amazing.
For more of that pedal-steel-style detuning on standard guitar, but taken to its melodic extreme, check out Adrian Legg playing "Midwest Sunday" on RUclips. Either the rig-rundown on the Premier Guitar channel, or an audience video titled "Busters' Funky Fingers". Prepare for multiple jaw-drops!
This is once again a very technical reaction that doesn't become boring, especially to someone who has played guitar for fifty-two years. I don't know what planet Junior came from, but I long to go there when I die. Keep on.
Wings of Pegasus always show my favorite artists, it’s great because I don’t have any friends or acquaintances that like this sort of stuff. I wish everyone would give this a chance!
You can definitely tell it is Junior Brown when you hear him. Both his guitar and his vocal stylings. . . The Beach Boys said that when they asked Junior to do 409 it was just a blast. His guitar and deep vocals made a great song a whole lot better.
The first thing I had to do was Google Junior Brown, I had never heard of him. When I saw the name I wondered if he was related to James Brown, once I had your video up, I was obviously wrong. Junior is absolutely amazing, I'm going to have to find some more. Maybe I should also sell my guiter...
I don't think I've ever found a guitarist who was as talented and FUN to watch. He's a musical genius and a fantastic showman. He didn't even detune the guitar while he played it in this performance.
Seen this man 4 times and would see him again if he comes back , every show was so different and fun,, very talented man and his band and wife are so good
Have seen Jr Brown many times. He never disappoints, always gives you all he has. Fil, you make watching things that we take for granted to be more appreciated. From deep in the heart of Texas, Thank You Sir.
First time I ever saw Keb Mo was on Austin City Limits. Went out bought his 1st & 3rd albums the next day. My late wife & I listened to Slow Down about 17x in a row!(never saw him on the show again it was like 95 or 96)
This is the 1st time I have had the pleasure of watching Fil break down an artist, explain technique. I love Junior Brown BUT the joy in Fil's face as he is watching Junior play really made me smile. Fil's understanding, explanations are so fun to watch. "I" am a bass man but you gotta love Fil... Thanks Brother, awesome job...👍
Thank you for going through all of these dynamics. This playing is just absolutely, outrageously fantastic. I would give a right pinky finger to play like this. I have tried to teach myself to play like this, but this is just a God-given talent that not every musician can master…or I have not. ❤️
I have to see this under appreciated icon. What ever it takes. I love blues and rock a billy and rock n roll. This gentleman is such a treasure to the music world.
I was heading East On I-40 in West Texas when I got lit up. The highway patrol was a K-9 unit. I didn’t need any of that action. As I sat there waiting for the cop pondering my future waiting for the cop to come back to my car..! Eureka, my Jr. Brown CD. I cued up “highway patrol”. I said this seems appropriate. He goes WOW Jr Brown I saw him about a month ago. He went on a rave about the show. He let me go with a warning and no other questions. I drove off saying “ Thank you Jesus, Thank you Jr.
I remember seeing this Junior Brown performance late in 1998 on "Austin City Limits" on KSPS, the PBS TV station in Spokane, Washington via satellite feed on cable TV in northern Alberta, Canada. KSPS had a huge fan & donor base up there. I'd only just heard about Junior Brown a few months earlier, and this program was jaw-dropping. I've watched this and other Junior Brown appearances many times - this still really stands out. He was, and remains an astonishing performer. Thanks, Fil.
Can't remember when I first saw Junior Brown on TV, but it was a long time ago. He has incredible musical talent, far beyond anything I can describe, and sometimes his humour is as devastating as his musicianship.
I saw Junior Brown in a club in Winston-Salem, NC around 97 or 98. He was incredible. I loved your analysis of what Junior was doing and how he did it. Thanks.
Yes indeed! Junior Brown is one of the best guitarists in the world. I love watching his techniques, and I really liked your explanation of them Fil, very thorough. Cheers!
Living in Austin in the 70thys was a very special time, I was blessed to be there at that window of time, it was so unbelievable, what was going on in that very special time 🙏, from Willie Nelson to Stevie Ray Vaughn, and, si many in between..
Saw Junior years ago at a free outdoor concert in Cleveland, he opened up for Toby Kieth. They sort of squeezed Junior's band out in front of Kieth's set up, and a bunch of the road crew, and very likely some band members were watching from the wings. The look of awe and respect on their collective faces as Junior performed, was truly a sight to behold.
A few years ago I went to see Junior Brown. It was a very small venue so I was close to the stage. The feeling I got watching him play was the same as when watching a great magician. You just logically know that what you are witnessing can't really be happening but you don't know how it was done. Completely transfixed by his playing, singing and energy.
Best refrain line ever: "You're wanted by the police and my wife thinks you're dead." You don't even need the song - it's all there in that line. It's a haiku.
Amazing Skill, got to see him in the 90's. Got a few words from him as he was Loading his Instrument on his Travel Bus. Never seen anything like it since. I would like to see him Perform again.
He was booked to play a small venue in Indianapolis around ten years ago. My girlfriend and I came close to getting tickets and driving the five hours to see him. We didn’t, and it’s been a mistake to remember. I’ve been watching him a lot on RUclips this year but would love see them live. So glad you’ve honored him with this.
I have loved southern fried rock n roll and country music since I was old enough to find it on the radio And I have been Mystified on how Junior Brown Gets so much sound and depth from his Git-Steel it is sooo amazing to listen to and to watch Wow! What a performance He and Tanya Rae put on a performance like no other!
I freaking love that you're doing Junior Brown bro! I'm a long distance truck driver and I listen to a lot of his stuff but I'm heading along that cold black ribbon that stretches through the expand to leave United States and dark out that guitar broke it down!
I’ve been going past you for a while because I don’t play. I’m TEXAN and saw this Junior Brown video come up. You know your stuff and it was enjoyable just to hear the technique explained. Very cool man. Great name by the way.
JR Brown - another mostly undiscovered American gem. I wish I had known who he was a couple decades earlier. Talk about endless energy and imagination ...... and that Guitsteel guitar is an ass kicker.
The genius of Junior Brown. I had no idea. Only knew "Highway Patrol" Then this, and also the "Pipeline" video, what a treat. Enlightening, enthusiastic analysis.
I've had a few opportunities to see Junior in a small club where sitting in the front you are literally 6 feet from his strings at eye level. I'm not a player, but when you see the subtle bends with individual fingers as well as everything else it is amazing. Realize that in this video he is not switching from the regular neck to the steel which he does seamlessly. His slide is in a hole on the top of the guit-steel so that he can slide it on and off as he plays.
Thanks for breaking down his magic. I’ve seen a couple times and continue to be amazed at his skill and technique. The broad swath of diversity among his fans and his music is something to behold.
I got to see Mr. Brown 3 nights in a row after 91’, in a small lounge (literally), when I returned from Iraq for the 2nd time. He was a boss on stage. So good.❤❤❤❤
Honestly I thought you were just going to say --- "I have no clue wtf he was doing there. He just does whatever he wants, when he wants to." AND has the ability to ... Junior seemingly from another planet. So unique, goofy, crazy, fun, funny and a true guitar genius.
Saw Junior Brown in a small venue in Alexandria, Louisiana back in the late 90's and was totally blown away. I had no idea who he was or what I was in for, Been a fan ever since
The STONE TEMPLE PILOTS did a Live Performance on the David Lettermen Show with Junior Brown playing guitar with them. The Song is SOUR GIRL, and it is one of the best performances on Lettermen for the Grunge/Alternative Rock Bands.
This guy is way beyond my guitar level. I would bet that since his wife and band keep a regular chord/beat progression going, he improvises a lot and probably doesn't play or even sing the same thing two times in a row.

The guy's an animal... Some of the lyrics to his songs are hilarious... Which is fitting because he reminds me of Rodney Dangerfield in a cowboy hat.
One of the most underrated guitarist of all time 🤘🎸, Mr Brown is a sick player makes sounds most guitarist can only wish they could🤘🎸
AND HE'S FUN. Lawdy, his shows are such high energy and FUN FUN FUN.
Not only underrated but not so well known either! Insane talent!
Probably the only guitarists alive that is in comparison with SRV
Seeing Junior Brown and the Reverend Horton Heat at the same show was absolutely killer.
'cept he ain't! I believe he's HIGHLY rated, FF!!
forgot to mention Junior puts his heart into every note. makes it something that everyone loves to hear.
Junior had a moment but I feel he is WILDLY under-appreciated for his talent. A forgotten legend in his own time.
You might've forgotten him .
Thank you for using the expression “ under appreciated “ instead of underrated. I think the term underrated is way overrated.

I loved you're analysis of the techniques he uses, especially given the grainy picture. That is unique about your channel and keeps me coming back.
Great insight, Phil. Thanks.
Genius !! So ahead of his time !! Great tone , also !! Bravo ! 🎸🎸👍👍
I love Junior Brown. Thanks for the video!
Typical AUSTIN !!!!
“In YOUR FACE” !!!!!

Thanks for breaking down his magic. I’ve seen a couple times and continue to be amazed at his skill and technique. The broad swath of diversity among his fans and his music is something to behold.
Fantastic work! JB is just one of the greats! You have captured what his chords look like!
I got to see Mr. Brown 3 nights in a row after 91’, in a small lounge (literally), when I returned from Iraq for the 2nd time. He was a boss on stage. So good.❤❤❤❤
Thank you Fil for your awesome choice and analysis. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Among the best guitarists in the world. Junior Brown is amazing. Tanya Rae is also a supremely talented Rhythm Player.
Honestly I thought you were just going to say --- "I have no clue wtf he was doing there. He just does whatever he wants, when he wants to." AND has the ability to ...
Junior seemingly from another planet. So unique, goofy, crazy, fun, funny and a true guitar genius.
Wow this is incredible !
Never even heard of this guy until now. Thanks!
"You really got me" with that introduction!
Great video. He plays the steel on some of his origionals. He built that guitar i read somewhere.
Saw Junior Brown in a small venue in Alexandria, Louisiana back in the late 90's and was totally blown away. I had no idea who he was or what I was in for, Been a fan ever since
I think that can safely be called masterful. Thanks for giving him some run. Great musician and entertainer. A true showman.
I’m not a guitar player ….. but I appreciate your analysis of a great player! Continued success!
I know nothing about guitar and I can't analyze a thing, but in terms of humor and amazing talent, this guy reminds me of Roy Clark.
