- Hey everyone! I have had multiple requests for a video showing the custom seat modification I use on my Prijon Yukon Expedition. RK Brian has a new boat and I walk thru the full seat upgrade. Step by step instructions will guide you through the process. This DIY kayak seat upgrade can be used on many kayak seat designs. Make your next kayak camping trip a more comfortable one!
Thanks so much for your excellent video. I have an old Prilite so had to scale things up a bit. I had to ask my local foam shop guy here in W Australia what foam might match what you used. it was maybe a bit firmer, so he suggested I add a layer of porous (but waterproof) soft foam to the front.
It's just great that I can just pull against the bungy and lower the seatback out of the wind but still tied on.
Good stuff Bruise!
You drilled my boat- When my anxiety ebbs- I’ve got to get that masterpiece out of RK World HQ!!!
Lol!!
I took my River Ruby out today for her maiden voyage and I am going to make the upgrade on the seat, but I love the kayak. I am also going to put a rudder on her.
Oh yeah!!!!
great job a good way to cut foam is an electric bread-cutting knife hello from Australia
right on! Great tip!
I knew it wouldn't be too long before brian was lured to the "Dark side"-Enjoy that new one mate
Yes!
Thanks dismaldog!!
Good video Pete as soon as I get a kayak like that I’ll fix the seat nothing worse that a numb bum trying to get out on a takeout
Thanks Danny! You are right about that!!
Great how to! You should consider a "How To" on your solar battery charging set up too.
Thanks KW! Will do!
Nice work, going to have to try this myself. It looks like the new seat foam i EVA foam, if it is you can heat seal it with a hot air gun. It will make the cuts and sanded bits smoother. Not important at all just a little tip.
Right on Stefan!
I'm going to do a version of this on my Old Town Vapor. Thank you
Right on Luke!
Did you end up doing this? I have a Vapor that I am currently looking into upgrading the seat on.
They make a keyhole saw for cutting drywall that has a nice handle or I believe its Milwaukee that makes a handle that sawzall blades can slide into. Makes it's a lot easier on your palm.

Yes, that would be the perfect tool on this.
To avoid drilling into the bottom of the kayak, just take some duct tape and tape up the drill.
This way you can limit the depth of any hole you want to drill.
Hot glue around the drill does a good job too.
It's easier than to take out the seat.
Yes, sometimes I put a thin piece of sheet metal between the seat and the kayak...stops the drill
Fantastic! Btw, i love my prijon yukon. Awesome kayak.
Right on!
Hey Michi - not yak related but that Strat in your avatar - beautiful man.
@@coffinshaker thanks bro 👍👍😃
Thats a great mod video. I need to do something similar to my Tsunami. I have found that most of my discomfort comess from the back part of the seat pan just under my tail bone will cause my legs to go to sleep. Im thinking that if i can move my "rump" forward an inch would elimimate that discomfort. A thicker seat back might force me to sit for forward correcting the problem i have. Another bad side affect from being a little bit tall for my age.
Thanks Tracy! We shud take a look at it!
@@RiverKingsKayak lets do it!
I did something a little different for the seat back, used a Harbor Freight kneeling foam and the top rim of a trash can for support. Then I did the same thing you did for the seat bottom and it was really comfortable. One thing I noticed is in the rain, the seat fills with water. Has anyone tried drilling a weep hole in the seat bottom to let the water drain out?
Right on Dean!
Wrap a piece of masking tape around the tip of the drill bit about 1/8 of an inch that way you won't go and I'll make a stop for the drill
Pete, do you ever have to make repairs on Nana or any of your Prijon kayaks? I’ve seen a number of plastic welding videos for HDPE yaks, but I can’t find anything for HTP yaks like the Prijons. A video on this would be amazing!
I have spot welded them for previously drilled holes etc...no major repairs ever needed on any that I own or paddle with...
Drill bit depth stop!
yes...
Use a couple c clamps for vice, I do It all the time.
Right on J B!
Skillz
Thanks Yak!
I’m curious if you have contacted Prijon ever to see if they are ever bringing back the Yukon? I have watched many of your videos and having tried to find on myself to buy they are very hard to get a hold of.
From what I hear, they need a 600 boat preorder to bring it back into production...Let them know you want one!!
The auto generated subtitles said the belt sander was music. 😂😂
🤣
Hey Pete, can you do a vid on the pros/cons between a backband and a seatback? I have a tsunami and dagger axis. Been thinking about switching to a backband.
Good idea! I will get that in the works...
@@RiverKingsKayak thanks Pete...not many people will be able to explain as good as you!
It looks like the wilderness systems seat pad has been discontinued any recommendations on what to use now
I have just heard that a couple of times...will have to do some research on that.
Great Video thanks Pete. BUT you didn't show how to install the thigh lifting straps and mechanism :( I have recently progressed from a Tarpon 120, and its ultra supportive seat to a Delta 15.5 with a leg cramp and back pain inducing seat and have been dreaming about installing a Wilderness seat into the Delta.
Oh man! You are correct!😧 I meant to do that! The leg lifters connect to the seat pan bolt if that helps...
@@RiverKingsKayak What is/where is the seat pan bolt? Surely RK Brian wants his leg lifters installed and video'd :) :)
The crazy thing, is I actually videoed that part from Nana and did not include it in it's entirety for some reason...at 4:13 you can almost see what I'm doing...what I will do is put out a small edit with an explanation...
the seat pan bolt on the Yukon is on the edge of the cockpit. It goes down into the kayak and grabs the black seat pan and holds that in place. I ran the bolt through the leg lifter strap there.
Which Rudder system works for the Yukon Expedition ?? Thanks love your videos !!!
Any of the Prijon specific rudders will work (except the old bullet insert type unless you have the original Yukon without the stern gudgeon). I prefer the old aluminum ones myself...
Hey Pete would the seat the butt padd would it work in the Eskimo kayaks like the topolino kendo Quadro
Not sure...
I've got 100+ miles in my Prijon Kodiak and I've suffered all of them with a similar stock seat. When I got the Yukon recently I noticed it was even worse. I'm gonna do this mod for both boats - you came up with an awesome design. Mine came without a rudder so I'm about to install it by I notice when the rudder is disengaged it hits the handle - did you come up with a quick mod to make an offset clamp for it in the transport/tied down position? I'm sure I can come up with something but if you already have please share.
We have used a couple different methods. the tall block rubber rudder rest seems to be the best option...I will find a link
This is a great seat upgrade will it work on the Tsunami?
Thanks Roger! The Tsunami has a totally different style seat pan and seat back....a new design wud be in order
Maaaaaaaaan I'm about to try and install leg lifters into my Pyranha Machno with a brute trash can lol
Right on wjennin!
@@RiverKingsKayak I think the hardest part will be deciding where to mount the straps and a ratchet. Dagger's style that attaches the straps directly to the seat pillars probably provides the most control. Decisions decisions...
@@wjennin1 sometimes the planning is half the fun! Keep me posted
I didn't get the notification because I had unsubscribed. LOL
LOL!!! love it!
Is there any way you can send the seat already made I live in Indiana with my wife and the ones we bought has no cushion what so ever the Aruba 8 ss
Your kayak is so different that it would not fit like this one. With an aruba, I would suggest just puttkng a small sheet of closed cell foam down with 3m spray.
River Kings okay I do appreciate it because idk what to use tbh
What kind of foam is that for the backrest?
3" x 12" x 12" closed cell foam.
@@RiverKingsKayak thank you
@@RiverKingsKayak thanks
Can you make one for my Eagle Talon ?
I am not familiar enough with the eagle talons...but Im sure something could be done
Are you able to make a full back support
That's what this is.
My kayak is not that same as that one the back support says full but after 2 hrs in my kayak. I wanted out my lower back was killing me so bad I couldn't find a beach 3 miles up in a lake I got out in the water and just floated myself 3miles back to launch. Now 2 days after my lower back is killing me
You know i follow yawl on here an would like to meet an float one wknd before it gets cold..because then it is deer season ...i live in the middle of north carolina ...thanks
Right on Chris! Stay tuned, we are thinking of group paddle soon!
Pete, what is the finished height if the foam on the custom seat. Thanks
I ended up trimming 1-1/2 inches off the top. It looks very close to Pete’s
Where are you finding those Yukons. I've searched but no luck.
It is a lifestyle of looking! Lol. You just have to be patient and persistent. They dont last long on the market either so pounce fast!
“Don’t drill the bottom of your kayak out.” 😂 Why not?!
LOL! You wouldn't believe the stories I have heard!
@@RiverKingsKayak I feel like this is the “point away from face” of the boating world.
@@theopinson3851 😁😆
DID YOU EVER MAKE THAT FULL SEAT FIBERGLASS KIT?
not yet
Whats the name of the foam cushion again
which one? Seatback or seated
@@RiverKingsKayak umm im just going to order mini cell foam and seat pads and make my own. Plus I've ordered a fiber glass kit also going to make a full seat to
Wanna help me try this on the tsunami...I'll even let you patented it
Lets do it.
My seat is terrible can i buy one from you? Only the back part.I have same model is th Yukon
Hey Samer! I am not selling them. I just posted a video as a guide to help others jump that hurdle.
Where are you finding these Prijons? I can't find one for sale anywhere!
You got to be patient and then pounce on the first opportunity you find cuz they don't last long.
@@RiverKingsKayak I know very little about Kayaks and snapped 2 of them up on Facebook Marketplace for $300, they're both Prijons, guess that's a good thing.
Hector Benalcazar hey just to let you know idk what state your from but Dunham sporting goods sells kayaks for 130$ I bought 2 of the Aruba 8 ss
Ok so because i live atleast some what close to the area your in myself and monkey so thats bear and monkey lol my paddeling partner would love to paddle with the river kings sometime if thats possible.
Right on! Where do you live?
What glue was that 3M?
Yes
Hey Pete, We have two Prijons that those seats would work in. How much for a per set? Thanks
Hey Joe! Thanks for reaching out. I dont actually really do them for money. At the moment, I am swamped for time and it would be a while before I can get to them.
@@RiverKingsKayak No problem just thought I would ask. Cheers
Bro those brute buckets are expensive AF
He he! I upgrade so many of these. Getting 3 seats from one can is 3xs cheaper than ordering the part. If you are doing just one, maybe just order the part
Can he even file a missing report with no name?? I think not!!!
LOL!!!!
Drywall saw....lol
You think I would have one around...lol
I find myself studying this video closely...
😁😁🤩
Hopefully you're not charging people for that ugly job on the seats 😬
ha ha! I dont build them to look at. I build them to be sat in. But, no, I have never charged my friends for their seats...
@@RiverKingsKayak looks comfy either way. You should use a hot knife to get clean cuts in the foam
@@BobaPat I tell myself that every time I start one of these projects...gonna have to break down and get one!
