Very nice, impressive work. I did similar for my pack boat. Original seat was glued to the floor but I sat too low on it. Used high density closed cell foam I stole from the floatation of a white water boat I had. Used a surf form for shaping. After an hour in boat I feel hot spots and am slowly carving those down for a perfect fit. Thanks for sharing, I like your work!
Dog shedding blades work great for scupting this type of foam. Looks like a RIDE cushion less the offloading well. For back purchase 1/4" ABS instead of wood, can shape with heat gun or torch and waterproof. cover all with 2mm neoprene ....Great video instruction
Very, very nice choice of Music, and Offcourse Beautifull Job Weldone. One can see that these hands have been working, and are easilly able to produce art....:) Nice Man...
If you don't have the time or inclination a Bumfortable seat is a very good option designed by an adventure kayaker who used to make his own like this but was also a foam plastics engineer so decided to design and mould his own instead. I've done both and happy with both, the Bumfortable sure is a lot quicker and easier though and you get the full seat in one rather than three pieces you have to fix and fit.
It is 2 lb and you can get it denser but the price goes up considerably for denser and it is not really necessary. 2 lb. is by no means "squishy". You may get foam like this in your area, but it is not readily sold in any foam shops in my part of the country.
Use your finger to guide along the bottom edge. Like using a combination square to guide a marker. Just set /lock your knuckle and go ! A little practice and you'll be a master too !
+alfriedar This foam is a special order item not available at hardware stores. It is high density, closed cell and sells for $20 per sq. ft on our web site.
I used several in this video. On the drill is a wire wheel. The hand held yellow tool is a Stanley surform. I now use a grinder with an attachment called a Holey Galahad. Much faster but an expensive attachment and hard to find in local stores.
No sealant is required. The foam is high density, closed cell so will not absorb water. Hence you will see the holes drilled in the seat as you don't want to sit in a pool of water. May fade in colour over time.
Love it! I have a bad back from it getting broken a few years back,so my trips have only been for about 4 hours max! But since I have gotten my wife into yanking and see how happy it has made her we want to take some long even overnighters! I bought what though would be a good seat but what a hunk of crap it is! My back and butt hurt worse than without it! I looked in my area for the foam I need and can only find it in 1 inch thickness, so I wii be contacting y'all for two pieces for my wife and myself. Thank you for making this video it has helped a old kayaker and a novice one who will surpass my ability! Thank you and God Bless!
+Robert Holt Foam is found on web store here www.orcaboats.ca/shoponline_cart.htm#!/4-inch-Foam/p/19801712/category=4444151 The system will not accept partial pieces of 1 sq. foot, but if you let me know the dimensions you need, I can cut to order.
It will never be as dense and comfortable as a custom fit that is shaped to fit your own "configuration". I have replaced seats such as the these for customers who do not find them comfortable for a long haul. An off the shelf seat that is designed to fit "everyone" really fits no one perfectly.
I made that video some a decade ago and it had music and voice over until the record companies heard it. So just took all sound out so as not to infringe on copyright.
Ronald Baker Sorry to hear that. After over 43K views, you are the first to say you dislike the music. You can always turn the sound off while watching.
I disagree. The comfort does not come from the seat having any cushion. It comes from the fact that the shape fits perfectly to your body. Hence there is no pressure points. Much like a steel tractor seat. And the foam is not soft at all anyways so it is carved as thin as possible to rest on the bottom of the cockpit so that the paddlers center of gravity is as low as possible.

Great design! I love how the back support holds it all together.
you are a super custom Dude. I wasn't expecting real craftsmanship
A comfortable seat is the difference between a 1 hour paddle versus an all day paddle. Excellent work.

Very nice work... and no nylon straps to come loose. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome is an understatement this is very impressive and I am assuming very comfortable.
Very, very nice choice of Music, and Offcourse Beautifull Job Weldone. One can see that these hands have been working, and are easilly able to produce art....:)
Nice Man...
Very nice and practice! Good work, congrats.

Nice, I'm going to make one of these! Even just an easy hour in my Perception Eclipse Sealion, my butt starts to get numb.
One could shape an entire kayak with this stuff.
Great job! Thank you for sharing, liked.
That foam is cross link PE. Probably 2 or 4 pound density. You can get it from any foam supplier in your area

Sorry. I meant squishy compared to 4 or 6 pound. Your seat is very cool
Amazing work!
you really draw a straight line free handed.

Excelent job 👏👏👏👏
music is a bit odd but great vid... where does one get such a large foam pad like that ? Have not seen that at Lowes or HD

thanks for sharing
What wheel did you use for the foam carving part?
I used several in this video. On the drill is a wire wheel. The hand held yellow tool is a Stanley surform. I now use a grinder with an attachment called a Holey Galahad. Much faster but an expensive attachment and hard to find in local stores.
@@OrcaboatsCa thanks! I wanted to make sure it was a wire wheel. You don't get affordable kayak seats in India if at all.
what kind of foam is that? where can i buy it.
It is closed cell, high density foam and I sell it on my web site. orcaboats.ca/shop/4-inch-Foam-p19801712
This is genius, 'love it
Thanks as it's very helpful
What type of high density foam is this in video? Thanks!
The foam is a high density, closed cell, ethafoam. We sell it on our web store.

i guess Im kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to watch newly released movies online ?
@Brayden Mustafa I watch on FlixZone. You can find it by googling =)
@Jefferson Byron definitely, been using FlixZone for since march myself =)
@Jefferson Byron Thank you, signed up and it seems like a nice service =) I appreciate it!!
@Brayden Mustafa no problem xD
What type of foam is this? And where can it be bought?
It is high density closed cell foam. We sell it on our web site. 4 inches thick and sold in pieces.
Is there no sealant or coating you can put on after? Thanks!
No sealant is required. The foam is high density, closed cell so will not absorb water. Hence you will see the holes drilled in the seat as you don't want to sit in a pool of water. May fade in colour over time.
OrcaBoats do you carve a channel in the bottom for water to flow away from the holes? Awesome work
some dope ass music

I need to do exactly this, looking for materials.
Material sold on my web site.
@@OrcaboatsCa yes i found it eventually, but I wanted more than just a seat. I ordered a "half-sheet" elsewhere.
Where can I buy that kind of foam ???
That depends on where you live. In North America, you can purchase it from us on our web site store. It is 4 inches thick and sold by the square foot.
i cant find were you sell your foam all i need is 4-4-2 feet sheet

Looks like 2pound as squishy as it is
What is an online source for the 4" closed cell 2 lb density foam?
You can order the foam from the on line store on my web site. www.orcaboats.ca
Where is a supplier of this type of foam?
I sell it on my web site. www.orcaboats.ca
how thick is the block
+vqfive 4 inches thick
an electric meat carving knife works faster and easier for rough out than the carver
Great work but you can buy on from yak gear for $26.00

This foam is like 1000 bucks a yard at Jo-Ann Fabrics.
Wow. You can order it online from us for $22 per square foot at 4 inches thick.
Y no sound

that music made me nautious

Ronnie Paul Your spelling of nauseous nauseated me.
そ
music not needed
Not a great design you removed to much material.. little bit of cushion...👎🏻👎🏻
