This is exactly the video i've been looking for. I've had this yak for 6 years or so and love it but have always had the same complaint after a day of fishing, and that's that my butt and back are so sore after sitting on plastic all day. Ordering all of this stuff now, thanks!
This looked awesome so I gave it a shot. My seat was resting a bit higher, but used the same fastening method. I'm a bigger guy and maybe 3 minutes into the river on calm water, I got dumped! It's just too high for me to be stable. Looking for a skinnier seat that will fit lower in the yak. Great install tho!
Thanks for the video, I have the same kayak. 2 summers ago I added a padded seat to my original seat. It was fine but I wanted something better this year. No more reaching around blindly in the rear box, easier access to my knife and plyers.
I JUST did this today on my yak because of this video. Super stoked to get out on the water now again. The one thing i did different though is i used the back to the old seat by tying the straps behind the back of the new seat and using a fat zip tie on the barrel portion at the bottom of the old seat back and connecting it to the rear cross member of the new seat. It's like a lazy boy. Don't tie that zip tie too tight though because the seat back won't fold down correctly if you zip it too tight. This video was awesome and I thank you so much for the idea

What mattered most to me was the ability to remove the new kayak seat in the event other family members wish to turn it back into a tandem kayak with the original hard plastic back rests. The zip-ties make it easy to remove the new seat without removing the eye-pads.
I just finished doing the same with my yak, used that same seat from Walmart. However I found the seat back to be too upright...did not lean back enough, very uncomfortable. So I removed all the rivets at the "pivot" point and replaced with 3" bolts and nuts, using the existing holes. Now the seat leans back as far as I want. Used strong paracord on each side, tied paracord to the lean back, and other end to kayak straps/handle to stop the seat from leaning too far back, just the right angle. Adjust paracord to your comfort position.

I removed the foam seat cover as you did and mounted off the plastic seat to have better stability. I tried it mounted as you did but I didn't care for it. Not saying it was a bad mount, just saying that it wasn't for me. Also, my seat is about an inch higher and I made vinyl straps to attach it to the base I built as I carry my kayak on the roof of my Mazda3 and like removing the seat for transport. The nay sayers came out with all kinds of reasons why it was a bad idea to mount the seat in the way we did (at least they did on me) but I know these chairs and the way you mounted it is not a problem. I did find that the seat back was hard on my back (as I paddle a considerable distance). So my remedy for it is that since i mounted the seat up over the seat back strap braces (I hope that makes sense) I use the original seat back in conjunction with the stadium seat back. It provides me with a great lower lumbar support and I am able to lean back comfortably.

Hey man, i am thinking about doing this with mine and was just curious how you feel the seat affects the stability? I would picture it making it a bit less stable but I can't tell if it would matter. I would love the under seat storage and the extra comfort haha.
Hey great job!! Question, how was stability after seat install? I once added seats like this to my sit on top tandem, tried to keep them as close to the waterline as possible but wanted a little height for a better fishing view. Didn't throw the boat off balance drastically, but it was a little change in stability. Fine in lakes and still water but would no longer use in tidal or moving water. Just as a precaution as we have never dumped! (LOL) I have this same single kayak also and want to do the seat mod for tidal and moving water. Do you think it would be a convertible and stable fishing platform? Thanks
This is the best Video and cleanest idea I’ve found and I’m planing to do the same to my yak! Can you tell me again what the three screw on fasteners down each side are called? I couldn’t make out what they are called when watching your video.
As far as the pool noodle on the seat, back girls, I would have spent a tiny bit more to get a neoprene pipe insulation wrap that is black, and is more harmonious with the color of the seat. Otherwise a great job.
I have the exact same kayak and I absolutely hate the seat so I’m definitely going to be doing this probably tomorrow! I may have missed if you said it but did you just use screws to attach the padeyes or did you use a nut and bolt underneath?
I just bought this seat today and it only took 1 minute in the seat to know that upper bar on the backrest was going to be a deal breaker, the pool noodle idea will save me from returning it
I bought that same seat. I put mine on in a less permanent way though. Also put rubber feet on the bottom of it and foam pipe insulation on the back. ( That bar on the back sucks.)
@@theflyguytfgflies yesterday i put 2 inch pvc under the front to make it lay back a little bit. I didn't like how it made me sit. I also tied the old butt pad to the back rest.
Thanks! I don't use them all the time but I stash some gear clipped under my elevated seat. I try to keep it dry as best I can. If I do take on water from rough runs in a creek/river, I will just beach the yak, pull the plugs, and drain it. Doesn't happen too often though.
Did the higher seat mess with stability at all? I have an almost identical kayak and am thought about doing this. I’ve built a mount for a trolling motor as well. I’ve yet to even test it but it won’t be long.
When you raise the seat on any kayak it can become less stable. For me, I fly fish out of my kayak and have not had any issues but have noticed that my movements are a little more noticeable but the kayak isn't "tippy." I hope that helps you.
Thanks for the comment, that's what I was wondering about. I'm sure there are stadium seat options that would fit down on-top of the original seat area though.
Is that seat comfortable? I came from another guys video who got a stadium seat from Amazon for 35$. I'm just wondering what one would be more comfortable. Awesome job!
If I may say so, I had the Amazon seat and lost it whe I flipped the yak. The Amazon is way more comfortable because it has full length rubber legs and cushion. That's why it's 32 bucks. This Walmart one is just a piece of fabric. But the Amazon one has a smaller footprint that sits in the existing seat well area. You can't use this install for that seat. This Walmart stadium seat has a bigger footprint that will sit on top which leaves a big gap below your seat for storage. That's a plus! 👍 Just not as comfy.
@@Y-N0t hey man thanks for your input! I bought ghe Amazon one but haven't had a chance to use it. I went with the more expensive Amazon one as it definitely did look more comfortable. I love kayaking!
But want stability if I happen to get in rough water!
Thanks
@@theflyguytfgflies wow, thank you :-)
Great video for all of us on a budget.
awesome quick and cheap mod. i will try this on my Teton.
Very Nice upgrade.....I was lookn at yaks yesterday..... Won't be long.....
This is the best Video and cleanest idea I’ve found and I’m planing to do the same to my yak! Can you tell me again what the three screw on fasteners down each side are called? I couldn’t make out what they are called when watching your video.
Thank you! Glad it helped you. Those are pad eyes secured with pop rivets.
Hi, I just got my new Kayak, never had in the water. What holes are you suppose to plug? i have 4 holes in bottom, I really like ur vedioes...joe
Bad ass. I just bought this seat today. I have a pelican sentinel angler. I'll try it out in the am
Thank you going to try the seat Costco is selling now on my wife’s. I gust replaced mine with a kayak seat.
How are the seats working for you ? Which size did you get 17 or 20 . ? Compared to this stadium seat
Great video. Wondering if you used screws or rivets for the pad eyes holding the seat. Thanks!
As far as the pool noodle on the seat, back girls, I would have spent a tiny bit more to get a neoprene pipe insulation wrap that is black, and is more harmonious with the color of the seat. Otherwise a great job.
Great idea! How well are the pop rivets holding the seat down? Would screws be better to use?
I have the exact same kayak and I absolutely hate the seat so I’m definitely going to be doing this probably tomorrow! I may have missed if you said it but did you just use screws to attach the padeyes or did you use a nut and bolt underneath?
The detail in this is awesome. I’m not detail oriented and this was very helpful. Thanks!
Looks solid ! I just got mines so kinda cringing over mods but it must happen
Thank you SO MUCH!! THis is exactly what I was looking for!
I just bought this seat today and it only took 1 minute in the seat to know that upper bar on the backrest was going to be a deal breaker, the pool noodle idea will save me from returning it
Nice video bro! I would like to know if raising the seat if it didn't lose some of the balance on the kayak?
Good job on the mods! Question on the pool noodle backrest... Did you cut the noodle length wise and slip over the bar or what?
Thank you! Yes I did cut it length wise to slip over the bar.
Great idea I'm going today to get me one of those seats
Awesome mod man I’m gonna give it a try
Does raising the center of gravity effect the stability of the kayak
What did you install the pad eyes with? Would be cool to see videos with you doing the upgrades. Good work matt!
You can also use well nuts. Very secure and waterproof. I use well nuts for all my kayak installs.
Please do. I'm interested in this too. Thanks in advance.
Nice 🛶 and Chair!
Get you a pipe bender and bend the top inch 45-75 degrees and tiny self tab the bottom backrest fabric to keep it there will be alot more comfertable
Good idea, still gotta figure out why people use supper plugs
I bought the one with the arm rest bars because it doesn’t have a back bar so it’s nicer on the back
What kind of screws did you use to install the pad eyes
Thanks for the mounting idea though man works great
This video was great! I modified my seat ..... Using this idea love it!
How did it work for you? Do you recommend it?
@@Free_Palestine_River2Sea live my seat. I would recommend the adaption. It sits you up a bit more which makes the balance a bit different but stable.
I'm interested in your kayak. How tall are you and how much do you weigh? It seems to work well for you.
Does the seat sit up a little higher than the original seat to help fly fish better from the kayak.
What type kayak is this . Like the idea
Tank you so much watched your video got the stuff and did it
..I have a different kayak(pelican bandit 80 and it still works
I tried the same seat on mine, It was too wide and raised the center of gravity making the kayak too unstable for my liking.
Thanks for the comment, that's what I was wondering about. I'm sure there are stadium seat options that would fit down on-top of the original seat area though.
clean install! thanks!
Does this mod change the center of gravity? Make the boat feel tippy?
Excellent detailed video, Thanks!
do you have to drill holes for those little mounted that the seat is zip tie too?
Plus like you said and norcal youtuber said it fits the seat well Judy right and is sturdy without having to secure. Did you feel the same about the stock seat? It was way too uncomfortable for me. My ass was incredibly sore after only 45 min.
@@cwatson42785 let's just say I have a pinched nerve or something that doesn't allow me to sit flat on the floor. The stock seat aggravated this nerve! Neither stadium seats gave me any issues.
@@Y-N0t awesome man! Yeah I can't wait to try it! I gotta get used to sitting down fishing and get used to casting but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it. Thanks for the advice brotha
@@theflyguytfgflies lol glad it wasn't just me! I got ghe new seat so can't wait to try it out! Thanks!
MY FIRST 93 HONDA ACCORD RUBY RED ...CAR A CLASSIC IN THE DRIVE WAY😢😢😢
They are great little cars. They don’t make em like that anymore. 💯
Do you silicone or anything when you screw in the screws on the pateyes
Yup put one in to kyack pcv tubing screwed in then just zip typed to pcv
Hey do you feel like your kayak wobbles more in the water
What would you say is the total weight of you and all your gear on this kayak? I know the weight capacity is 275, I am just wondering if you think it would work with someone with gear totaling a little more than that, maybe by like 20 lbs.
@@theflyguytfgflies thanks man. I appreciate it.
so you keep the seat on while traveling in the car?
How is stability and paddling speed with the elevated seat vs stock ?
Yes 👍
Dose the seat get in the way of the fishing rod holders
do you think plastic pop rivets would work also?
Did it change the stability of your kayak?
Have the same kayak and have to change the seat out. Do u know the measurements of that seat how wide
Nice! 20.25 inches wide
How are the pad eyes attached? Screws?
Ive noticed through EVERY COMMENT of people asking YOU if this mod made the kayak less stable and you *heart* the comment but never answer. This leads me to believe that it was a flop but you’re not willing to admit it publicly.
I did this on mine and you don’t lose a lot of stability. It’s just as safe
@@BassbansheePlayz thanks bro
