Hello from Australia mate. I had my base GR for 5 months love it. Yeah for my style of driving base was enough vs Rallye or Circuit pack car as I don't track it. Imt I hated for ages but you work it out with time like the seats. Love it now but thought they were to high but that could have been from the reviews telling me over and over again. Cup 2 on the road. Amazing it shows how good the AWD system is working.
Yeah looks like you drive it hard mate. PS Even the crap Dunlops traction is amazing but AWD does most of the work. So do you want to tune the GR for more power ?
From Australia too and have the rallye and love it. I like the seat hight, I'm like 175cm tall I can see down the bonnet. Iv put a k&n filter in and took out the foam from the cold intake pipe, gives it a bit more induction sound. And put a genuine gr strut brace. Next mod probably be braided brake lines. Want a hks super turbo muffler but it's like 3k and want plazman intercooler with 2" intercooler pipe kit
thanks for sharing your experience! for the brake pads: it is about finding a compromise. faster wearing pads are usually more tender to the discs. long lasting pads on the other hand can eat up discs much faster... which bolts have you used for setting up camber?
If you wanna race the car you just have to get along with the fact that you will face a lot of brake wear on both disks and pads and probabble not that many suspenshion problems: sry my english is poor
The Yaris was setup from factory to have extremely low wear on discs, but high on the pads. I am willing to have additional wear on the rotors with a pad that lasts longer. I used bolts from H&R because they allow you to adjust camber continuously. Toyota also has OEM bolts that allow you to set camber Tó given values. I think the max you can get is around 1.5° above what the car has stock. So they should be up to 2.5°. Let me know if you want the part numbers.
Thanks for sharing this video!Great video and good to get a first hand evaluation on the car! Its crazy how popular this car is. We have loads of customers bringing in their GR's for work to be done. Fellow GR owners if anyone was thinking of some mods to add then give one of our videos a watch. Would love some feedback.
Glad you're having fun. Lot of country roads where we live, plus for our usual longer drives, so perfect car for twisty, bumpy, wet British B roads. Weird question, what was the occasional red flash on the central display screen (noticed it towards the end.) That's my default view to keep an eye on oil pressure and temp, but haven't seen the flashing red light. Awesome car, agree the beeps can be a faff, but I turn off lane assist as I'm starting up (hold down the button on steering wheel for a couple of seconds to deactivate) The "Brake" when you're briefly pointing at a parked car you're about to turn away from can be annoying, but in fairness, as soon as it detects you're moving away, it stops. Will take the beeps if it keeps insurance group and costs down! The door open bong is unbelievably annoying, but my wife's Landrover does the exact same thing, so we're used to it by now. Still jealous of the heated seats you guys get, we don't have them in the UK 😉
The blinking red light was a GoPro I had recording the dash. The lane assist is mega annoying because not only do I have to turn it off every time, it also seems to sometimes not to come off as consistently as I would have wanted. I never had a car that beeped so much at me, but might also be a "2020" car thing. And yeah I agree I can live with that. Would 100% turn all the beeps off if I could.
@@GreatMotors ah that explains it! Thought you had an over the shoulder and "driver cam" didn't spot that one. I've used the lane assist on motorway once to see how it is and on well marked lanes, it's pretty good (much better than cars we test drove even six or so years ago) but I'd like to think I'm concentrating enough not to Yeet into the central reservation.
My take: the GR Yaris is an absolute weapon and the most fun you can have for such an affordable price tag. A note about the Circuit Pack/Rallye version - you ONLY need this if you are a track enthusiast. Otherwise the open diff does an awesome job and you won't really make use of the LSD's unless you're a track nut. Happy driving :)
The Yaris really is mega for what it costs. About the LSDs é test drove one with them, mine has them, and I never got to test one with the open diffs. I do drive it a fair bit on track as I bought it as a "soft" track tool.
Hey! They are Autec Wizard 8x18J ET35. I chose them because they were cheap, made in Germany, weighted just a tiny bit more than the OEM BBS wheels, and have an ABE certificate which is important so that I can use them without registering in the car's papers.
I’m so torn between getting the GR Yaris or Mini GP3, sometimes I think I should’ve never got rid of my Megane RS265 would not have this problem right now.😅 Great video mate really enjoyed your input! Saudações tugas vindo da Austrália 🤘🏼
🤙 I think the Mini GP will be a more "hardcore" hatch experience. The whole MINI GP has a lot more drama than the Yaris. On the flip side the MINI will have less traction, and it's an automatic gearbox only. I don't think there is a "right" choice, and I don't think you will go wrong with neither.
I personally own the Mini JCW 3-door, so the less hardcore and slower version of the GP3. I am however quite disappointed by it as the driving characteristics near the limit are quite poor. It has way too much understeer and the automatic jerks around a lot when driving in town. The engine also has a very annoying soft limiter that already kicks in at around 5500rpm. This means that in many turns, the acceleration is very slow due to it being in a bad rev-range. I test drove the GR Yaris and I have to agree that it is a fantastic car! It is way more composed but also more fun than the Mini. The manual shifter is great and the handling is fantastic. The engine also pulls from almost any rpm and up to its limiter, which makes it feel so much quicker. The main advantages of the Mini are definitely the interior and the fantastic audio system, but from a driving perspective, it is no match for the GR Yaris.
Have you had any issues with the gear changes? I have issues when driving normally in town, not much much when really pushing it. It seems clunky, notchy and even sometimes crunch-like. Mine has done 33kkm, bought it used a little over a month ago. I am contemplating whether to switch to some other car, since the gearbox is so annoying...
Notchy and clunky yes. It's a tight sporty box, it will definitely have more than that than the typical city dweller car. Crunchy it shouldn't. I only experience that when switching from 2nd to 3rd under hard acceleration and turning. I stopped using 2nd gear on track because of it. Since you bought use you can't rule out that maybe the previous owner has abuse the box a bit. I would definitely take it to a dealer and ask them to assess.
@@GreatMotors Thanks for the reply mate, good GR content you have! Yeah, I already took the car to the dealer within the normal service and said about this. The mechanic test drove it and said there's no problem. Just have to take it back and try again. 👍
Went again for the dealer and had the lower torque mount torn. They will replace it under warranty, so let's see will it help. I also test drove another GRY and it wasn't as bad as mine. It had less mileage as well.
Fair 😅 I think the spirit is what matters! On a more serious note, I didn't expensive parts. It was all cheap inexpensive things... Except for the suspension still to come 😬😬
Bei dir im Landkreis war GR-4 auch schon vergeben? Bei mir im Landkreis war ein GR Yaris Fahrer schneller als ich, hab auch "nur noch" GR-44 bekommen. ^^
Discs are really fine so far and they have done a meaningful amount of laps already. It's not only about being cheap or not, having to change pads each 18 laps on the Nordschleife is a huge annoyance... since it 1) limits the amount of laps I can do, and 2) I have to have replacements readily available.
