Toyota GR Yaris vs Morris Mini Cooper S: | Chris Harris Presents Llandow Laps

  • It’s Episode 3 of Llandow Laps, and Chris Harris is braving some typically Welsh weather to see what the world of hot hatches has to offer. First, we have the widely praised Toyota GR Yaris, which has charmed the press and enthusiasts alike with its potent 261PS turbocharged inline-three and surefooted four-wheel drive system.
Due to a manufacturer no-show, the initial stand-in entry is something that features lightweight polymer construction, a two-wheel layout and, you might say, ‘ample storage space’.
Fortunately, thanks to a last-minute substitution courtesy of a certain Mr. Cooper, we got to pitch the GR Yaris against something small and high-revving after all. Given the conditions, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the Toyota was a clear favourite - but it might just have its work cut out against the unexpected contender.
So, get out your best sweeties and settle in for another exciting episode of Llandow Laps; complete with added detailing tips, strong opinions on bell peppers, and the automotive equivalent of saddling up a Labrador.
    ---
Llandow Laps is our exciting new series, hosted by Chris Harris at the 'legendary' Llandow Circuit in South Wales.
The concept behind Llandow Laps is to pitch two vehicles from the same genre against one another to see which is faster; and the first series will feature grand tourers (with a twist), hot hatches, supercars, roadsters, and restomods.
As well as showcasing the cars’ performance on track, the films will also reveal the behind-the-scenes work required to produce the end result, introducing some of the personalities from the Llandow Circuit and the Collecting Cars team.
The science bit: All cars featured in Llandow Laps will be unmodified from the specification seen on screen, they’ll be running with a full tank of fuel, and they’ll be fitted with sensible tyres available on the road cars from the factory.
Lap times will be recorded, and a winner of each head-to-head will be revealed - although there’ll be more focus on the driving experience and character of the cars than on the numbers alone.

Owned a modded Aussie Clubman S in the early 1980s, so this brought back memories of how much fun a Mini Cooper S can be!
The original 1100cc motor had crapped itself, but as I was looking for a Mini to swap over all the gear from a battered 1310cc Mk1 Cooper S donor-vehicle, it was ideal! Until I fitted the auxiliary fuel-tank, widened-rims & flared guards, it was a real sleeper!
Along with installing negative-camber adjustable suspension-arms, & front-shocks on the hydrolastic-suspension for phenomenal handling, I also fitted dual 1.5" SU carbs, worked head, rally-cam, extractors/headers, straight-thru exhaust, plus a Rover brake-booster to help stop those Cooper S disc-brakes!
Once while I was driving on a quiet, straight, & flat section of 110 kmph motorway, one of my two passengers asked; "How fast can it go? So, after quickly reaching over 160 kmph (approx. 100 mph), I decided it was probably wise to slow down as we were quickly approaching the vehicles that had previously been quite a distance ahead!
However, considering I only had two passengers because the boot along with the rest of the space was taken up by our luggage, being able to exceed the proverbial 'Ton' was quite impressive (despite the noise threatening to destroy our ear-drums)!

I've had three standard 1000s. I would regularly do 80 on the M1 and think, on a slight downhill I was nudging an indicated 85... That was about it for a standard car that was fifteen to twenty years old (late 80s). I've never had such fun in anything else. I'd get another, but you can't just pick one up for 400 quid any more...

On the sandwich/pepper thing; I feel that way about raw onions. I actually eat raw bell peppers (red, orange, & yellow, not green) as a snack. But a slice of onion on a sandwich or in small chuncks on a salad takes the entire bite over for me in a way that I refuse to have them on my food now.
Beyond that, I love this series and I'm always happy to see Chris and his crew on video.

That's a like & sub from me, the smile on your face first couple of corners is just what Mini's do to you. I miss my 1978 Mini Clubman GT British specs (Metallic Brown, Brazilian metal was the paint name i think). I still regret giving it to my sister but she still enjoys it (I gave it to her on one condition, don't let the kids drive it until they've crashed their first car). They called it uncle Paul's toy car lol.
Every time it rained i would hope in & go have some F.U.N! I used to take short cuts home from work down a couple of one way streets the opposite way, if anyone came along I'd slow down (I'm not a monster) drive up a driveway along the footpath & down another driveway, they'd be abusing me & I'd respond with toot, toot ;0) LOL. I even evaded the police once through Centennial Park Sydney ( they couldn't fit through the gates when it was closed but Millie The Mini could lol.. Good times ;0)

Much more enjoyable then the others! Chris twirling the Yaris was an eye opener. Such casual driving is probably only shown in outtakes I have not seen

Love Mr Cooper. When I learned he was a management consultant or whatever, I was like that figures. Normally have no time for such types and he does often produce a lot of hot waffle 😂. But he is just lovely to listen to and sounds like an all-around good lad. I also learned that he did at least attempt to do a mechanical engineering degree, so he's alright in my book.

The Yaris GR in the dry will beat many super cars on the track. GR is unreal car. Now its nice seeing a proper mini again and no German junk 😊. Great video.

Brilliant. Loved the Swiftune MINI. What a car! Unfair to compare with a GR Yaris but fun just the same.

It feels like the GR is the last proper hot hatch left now the fiesta st is dead and the i20 n has been axed.

The GTI is still around although VW stupidly gonna axe the manual option.
The Civic type-R is great but is it really a "classic" hot hatch anymore? It's nearly as big as an Accord now (might as well call it the Accord type-R)

Love the production on these videos. I remember trying to toy with a GR yaris in the wet once in my 140i. Suitably embarrassed but couldn't stop laughing, and a lot of fun. Yaris driver also enjoyed it, his passenger not so much. PS love an original mini. Never driven one, been in a few. CC's mini looks great fun.

As fast as that Yaris is, after having an original mini myself, I can’t imagine it’s anywhere near as much fun as the mini! Smile per mile they just can’t be beat!
