- In Episode 1 of Llandow Laps, Chris Harris takes to the track to pitch the Aston Martin DB12 against the BMW M5 CS. The Aston packs a mighty punch of 680PS from its 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8, helping to propel it to a top speed of more than 200mph - but it puts that power down through the rear wheels only. The BMW is heavier and less powerful, but all-wheel drive gives the car phenomenal traction, and a supercar-baiting 0-60mph time.
The DB12 looks like the definitive ‘grand tourer’, with generous coupe proportions and elegant styling. In Chris’ words, the M5 CS “looks like a taxi”, but it punches well above its numbers. Matching it up against a Ferrari or Maserati might sound more appropriate, but in Chris’ view, going head-to-head with the BMW represents “the ultimate test”.
Around a rain-soaked Llandow, the Aston’s weight helps it find grip, impressing Chris with the amount of power it can put down through and out of the corners. Llandow Laps is our exciting new series, hosted by Chris Harris at the 'legendary' Llandow Circuit in South Wales.
The concept behind Llandow Laps is to pitch two vehicles from the same genre against one another to see which is faster; and the first series will feature grand tourers (with a twist), hot hatches, supercars, roadsters, and restomods.
As well as showcasing the cars’ performance on track, the films will also reveal the behind-the-scenes work required to produce the end result, introducing some of the personalities from the Llandow Circuit and the Collecting Cars team.
The science bit: All cars featured in Llandow Laps will be unmodified from the specification seen on screen, they’ll be running with a full tank of fuel, and they’ll be fitted with sensible tyres available on the road cars from the factory.
Lap times will be recorded, and a winner of each head-to-head will be revealed - although there’ll be more focus on the driving experience and character of the cars than on the numbers alone.

It would have also been nice to see a few more corners, even the chicane is straight. I guess Llandow is fairly cheap to hire though and it is a business.

I'm loving the DB12. So much that I'm considering trading my 2015 Vanquish for one, the exact spec as the one in this video.
I wouldn't especially with your NA V12. I own a V12 DB11 and test drove the DB12. The DB12 puts down the power better and handled better and the interior is like Bentley designed it... but there was something missing. It was too good and way too quiet. It didn't scare me a little like an Aston should. I think those coming from the V8 DB11, it will be a big upgrade but if you have a v12 Aston, keep it.
Literally just finished Chris's book today and its so cool to see his next reboot taking place in real time. Collecting Cars content is exactly the sort of thing we want i reckon.

This is spectacular content. I know I speak for everybody when I say that we love seeing Chris talking to us like we’re old mates and that were part of the production. This was such an enjoyable episode and we are looking forward to more!

I prefer Chris cocking about being himself rather than the more produced and polished feel of this episode. Although I can appreciate the concept, it feels more like Top Gear and is not really my cup of tea. But damn it's good to see people funding things on less conventional media platforms.

This channel is like Topgear without any of the other bellends, Just Chris at his purest, doing competitive laps around in cars that actually matter. That aerial view of Llandow makes me think they're missing so much potential to extend it in to the infield. Three Sisters in Ashton-in-Makerfield is a great example of using all the space available to produce a tight and technical track that serves a wide range of vehicle performance. My M3 is as much fun as a go-kart around there. Llandow could be much more than a mini Thruxton.
Should have lapped the M5 in RWD mode and compared, just as an indicator of what a huge advantage 4WD would have given there

Love it. I would say that we're talking about a hand-built in the UK Aston Martin made in relatively small numbers vs the mass manufactured BMW. So cost wise, I would give the win to the AM. Visually the AM also wins hands down. 4 vs 2 wheel drive isn't apples for apples, which then makes the DB12's results even better (as Chris did say), but my go to question when buying a fancy car is... in 10 years time am I going to get excited about opening my garage to the BMW (German Taxi) or the Aston Martin? That being said if you've got kids or rob banks for a living, then I would go for the M5 all day long. My opinion anyway :)
Great, loved it. Lofe isnt dair however, 2wd v 4wd in wet slippy conditions is taking the proverbial. Putting the M5CS in 2wd would have evened things up, that said the DB12 was going slightly quicker at the speed camera, so this shows the grunt it has got once up amd running ... Would a 2wd BMW been that close?

This is a predictable result given 2WD vs 4WD on a wet track. It would be really interesting to see a rematch at a time when conditions have improved.
These were always the boring bits of TG where I used to leave the room to go make a cup of tea. I still clicked 'like' however because of the behind-the-scenes bits.
For being a modern car I have to say that M5 CS look very good overall. There's nothing that really stands out in a weird way, and to me it just works. It's aggressive in a subtle way done just right as the whole intention is behind the M cars.
Cool series but top speed/lap times are a bit reductive and irrelevant are they not? Especially for a GT car, wouldn’t it have been a better test to take both on a long trip? I would think the M5 would smoke the Aston in just about every parameter away from a single lap time
