A great video and discussion for sure. I loved how you guys brought up both the good and bad of each Saga. Myself I love the Freiza Force I love the look, design, and scaling of the minor characters. Vegeta vs Zarbon and Recoome ate some of the best one episode fights of the whole franchise for me. I also love the different ways a slight tweek of a characters color gives you a brand new character in the Freiza Saga. That said I prefer the Cell Saga simply because all major characters have their moments to defeat the big bad at various times. In Freiza you think some can until you realize Freiza is not only killing people he is killing time he could gone finale form anytime and ended it. Cell Saga you never get that vibe.

Frieza saga was my personal favorite arc. I have never been more satisfied watching a villain be defeated, as from the first episode of DBZ, we knew he was responsible for the destruction of Goku’s homeworld out of his fear of the legendary super saiyan. To see a “low-class” Saiyan from Earth be the one to defeat him was immeasurably satisfying. Also, not sure if this factors into other people’s evaluation, but I loved the score for the arc in the anime (kikuchi). Its hard to say. They're quite a bit different sagas. Not to mention the variations between the manga and anime versions. If we're saying anime, then the Cell saga easily. The pacing died in the Freeza saga since the anime had to drag shit out as much as they could so Toriyama could finish the manga arc. Meanwhile in the Cell arc the anime expands on a few things like Gohan's relationship with Goku when they were training. The manga just has Gohan screaming, then him screaming again but his hair turned yellow, then Goku explaining grade 2 and 3....and that's it. Gohan got barely any character development in the manga but the anime fleshed it out a lot more.
I think ultimately I'll have to say the Cell saga. It had an unique story and introduced so many iconic characters. We had villains that were gray characters rather than just black and white. Not to mention we got a lot more unique locations for fights to take place than just random wasteland.

I prefer the Cell/Android saga, as I think it's more narratively dynamic and less repetitive then the Freeza/Namek arc. The latter is mostly just a gauntlet of fights against Freeza's henchman (there is some interesting stuff with shifting goals and alliances when Vegeta is causing chaos to both sides, which is the best part of the arc IMO, but it doesn't last and it's still mostly just fight after fight) wheras in the Cell/Android saga, the goals and factions involved are constantly shifting: Not only do not know who the final villain will be, as was brought up in the video, but you don't even know what the next objective will be. There's training, there's stealth, there's trying to track people down, etc. It's not just fight after fight, and I think that really makes it more interesting and fun to follow.

  • @StareachValcin
    @StareachValcin Год назад +7

While I think both arcs are great, I think that the Frieza arc was better than the Cell saga. I liked how the Frieza saga was a continuation of the story that was started from the saiyan saga. The Cell saga was a good continuation of how Goku defeated the red ribbon army when he was a boy, but it feels too self-contained in the overall dragonball story, even though it starts with a continuation of the Frieza arc. I also like how the battle with Frieza was so difficult for those involved. Sure the androids were a threat to the Z-fighters too, and pretty much defeated them on multiple occasions, but if the good guys made different decisions, they could have stopped Cell from achieving his perfect form. In the Frieza saga however, none of the Z-fighters stood a chance against Frieza, and it only seemed like they stood a chance because Frieza is holding back most of the fight. Every time the good guys seem to have a chance, Frieza powers up and takes that chance away. It takes Goku becoming a super saiyan for Frieza to finally meet his match, and it isn't easy. Cell wasn't an easy opponent either, but it didn't start off like that. Cell was weaker than Piccolo after he fused with Kami, but he was smart enough to escape from Piccolo, hide his power and slowly build up his power until he was stronger than Piccolo, 17, and 18. 16 had a chance to stop Cell, until he absorbed 17. Vegeta had a chance to stop Cell, but gave him the chance to absorb 18 because Cell knew Vegeta well enough to know how to manipulate him. Once Cell became complete, no one was strong enough to defeat him except Gohan at super saiyan 2, and Gohan still messed it up by toying with Cell instead of finishing him, which led to Cell nearly blowing up the earth, and Goku having to save the day. This leads to another point that I like about Frieza saga over the Cell saga. Goku felt like he was handled better in the Frieza saga than Gohan in the Cell saga. Goku learning to accept his saiyan nature culminated in his "I am the super saiyan Son Goku!" line. While Gohan's super saiyan 2 transformation led to him being ruled by his saiyan instincts and toying with Cell instead of finishing him. Goku just seemed to have a better handle of his saiyan nature than Gohan did, and Gohan wasn't a full-blooded saiyan. I still enjoyed both arcs though.

I am a fan of the Freeza saga over the Cell saga and as you asked I will explain why. What I like about the Freeza saga is that they don't just tell you what's on stake. They teach how you can be strong but sometimes you might face someone far stronger than you. The cool villains and good guys alike, the stakes, the freaking war, the battle until the very end never giving up and the emotional impact makes the Freeza saga a winner for me. Well done for Geekdom on what he said- I saw DBZ first with the English dub and only after that I learned about the former DB. So I watched in English as well first. @@justinarzola4584 Agreed...a lot of thought was put into the Frieza saga and the heroes were on the backfoot the entire time. Seeing Vegeta against Frieza genuinely scared for his life and in tears even during the fight with his final form after everything he tried knowing he was hopeless and doomed to die was one of the hardest things to watch, it really showed Vegeta at his most vulnerable and that he got what came to him as a result of disobeying Frieza after all these years being forced to serve him. Vegeta dying was incredible, you just couldn't believe what he was saying it was shocking and showed the reality of how cold Frieza truly was and how Vegeta truly felt, I will never forget that. Goku burying Vegeta and actually was very shocked at what he heard from Vegeta really turned a whole corner, Vegeta was evil, he hasn't apologized for anything that he did but he explained more about why he was the way he is, despite Saiyans being battlethirsty they're enslavement by Frieza really meant Vegeta had no choice but to become what he was even as a Saiyan Elite, he now found himself in the same position a low class warrior would in the presence of a powerful tyrant as Frieza and was disposed of when he tried to rebel against him once and for all in the end. Vegeta spent his entire life to reach the moment he was able to face off against Frieza, it had so much purpose and an incredible backstory. People don't realize that in terms of character writing, plausibility, seriousness and the level of emotional reaction to the events were so significant in the Frieza saga, it was far deeper and more purposeful, it also made sense of the entire Dragonball lore as well that we know today.

Before you even get INTO it, the Frieza saga. It introduces Frieza as a main villain as soon as they get to Namek and they were so outclassed by him the ENTIRE saga. If it wasn't for Super Saiyan Goku, they were all dead. That's how you write a villain. Imperfect Cell was outclassed by Android 16, Semi-perfect Cell was held back by TIEN and then beaten by Super Vegeta and had to BEG Vegeta to let him get another form, and then Perfect Cell literally waited for 11 days for a tournament and Goku didn't even spend any time training because he knew Gohan was going to win...which, no matter what the circumstances, Gohan DID win. The saga just doesn't establish Cell as a better villain and so the saga itself isn't as interesting. Cell wasn't even introduced as the main villain ; it was the Androids who were SUPPOSED to be the big problem, so the saga just seems inconsistently put together. Just my opinion, let's watch the video because your explanations rock hard!

I really love the Frieza saga. It's where I first saw DB and years later after multiple viewings of the entire franchise I'm still fairly tied on what one is truly better than the other because it's so close.
But I got to give it to Frieza saga, it is the best because it transitions from the previous saga so well and develops all characters in interesting ways besides maybe Bulma who was annoying lol.
I pretty much agree with Geekdoms points about the Cell saga having better moments but the exploration fact of being on a different planet with a villain that ties Goku, Vegeta and Piccolo together with the whole trope of gokus previous enemies becoming his allies is absolutely amazing for the story. The dynamic of Krillin and Gohan searching for the dragon balls along with Vegetas character development is so fun to watch. The fact that Gohan and Vegeta go from trying to kill each other in Saiyan saga to competing for the dragonballs, trying to then join forces to beat Frieza then in the Cell saga Vegeta witnessing Gohan supassing not only him but Goku as well then helping Gohan to destory Cell makes pretty much all of DBZ until the Buu saga top tier for me.

Frieza Saga was a culmination of so many plot lines, but some things were left incomplete such as Gohan’s development and the Goku/Vegeta rivalry. Cell Saga wrapped up the development of Gohan into a warrior and Cell was a perfect end villain as the combination of every fighter up to that point. Piccolo and Kami also got their resolution in that saga. Hell Krillin finally got a girlfriend too. The only thing left unfulfilled is Goku and Vegeta’s rivalry, which was fulfilled in the Buu Saga.
Also the finale to the Cell fight, especially in the anime is the best ending to a fight in the series.
Also Goku went from being the student to the master in training Gohan with Super Saiyan, which wraps up a character arc for Goku.
I can more easily see the series ending with the Cell Saga and being a satisfying end compared to the Frieza Saga. So I think Cell Saga is superior. But Frieza Saga is really damn near close.

I'll say Frieza saga because its basically end game. Check it:
We figure out the history of the dragonball
      Piccolo and Kami history
Learned about Frieza is the most powerful being in the universe
Super Saiyan legend that Frieza feared
Learn that Frieza was the one who destroyed planet vegeta
Frieza killed both parents of Goku and Vegeta
      Enemies turned allies
War on Namek for the Dragonballs
Strongest warriors in the universe all in one planet
      Z warriors fights Frieza
      Piccolo comes home
Vegeta finally stands up to Frieza
      Frieza Kills Vegeta
Goku finally meets the guy who killed his family and race.
Goku finally embraces his Saiyan heritage.
      Frieza kills Krillin
Goku becomes the super saiyan of legend
      Dethroned Frieza
      The universe is saved
      Perfect ending in my book

@@KameronDAaron just no. I've heard this before. But Goku and his character arc peaked in the Cell games. Just because he excepts his own heritage doesn't mean his arc is completely over. Piccolo and Kami were teased fusing back in the saiyan saga but you think it's enough to just explain the origins of both characters. Gohan's character arc is left half done on namek. Krillin gets a far better ending with Android 18 as his girl presumably at the conclusion of the Cell arc. The Vegeta and Goku rivalry actually heats up during the Cell arc as well. Tien even had his shining moment against Cell.

I love both sagas but I love Frieza a little more. On first watch when it was just Gohan and Krillin on Namek vs a revenge fuled Vegeta and Frieza who King Kai didn’t even want Goku to fight under no circumstances was so scary. Gohan going from scared to fight in the last arc to raging out vs Frieza’s force to protect Dende was epic. Vegeta reluctantly helping Gohan and Krillin vs the Genyu Force and Frieza. Then Vegeta accepting that Goku was the chosen Saiyan to stop Frieza. Frieza was just pure evil and it was scary and epic. Cell was too full of himself and let the Z fighters train before the Cell Games. Goku finally accepted his heritage and became the legendary Super Saiyan to defeat the evil tyrant that he oppressed for so long was poetic justice. These are the reasons why I like the Frieza sage a little more than Cell.

The frieza saga is very cool, especially how all characters interact and move the plot along, Vegeta was great then, and it also has nice character development for Gohan, and the beginning of one for Vegeta.
But the cell saga has a bit of everything: mystery, horror (though short lived), great fights, time travel, culmination of character development for Gohan, important character development for Vegeta, Goku passing the torch to his son, Goku realizing he misunderstood Gohan's character, bonding moments between the characters, emotional moments (16 and Goku dying and Gohan's reaction to both deaths), the most badass transformation so far (ssj2 Gohan, pissed, with tears running up and down his cheeks)

Cell is my favorite villain, namely because of how he grows and changes between his forms, which you talked about in a different video (yes, I just did a plug for you. Lol) But my favorite saga was the Sayian Saga. I loved moments of the Frieza and Cell sagas but they both had one significant flaw that has followed in pretty much every arc since. (Except for the Goku Black arc as far as I know.) And that major flaw is simply the dragon balls. The universal reset button. With the dragon balls around, the stakes never feel too high. They can just use a wish or two to undo the damage. But with the Sayian Saga, the loss of the dragon balls was a tremendous blow. That one thing set up the Frieza saga. Yeah, the Z Fighters won against the Sayians, but at a terrible cost with no way to fix the damage. To me that's where the highest stakes of the series was. Even with the Buu saga, they ended up using Namakian dragon balls after the Earth was blown up by Buu. And the fact that the Sayian Saga started with the death of Goku, we knew we were in for a major battle. If the other two Sayians were as strong as Raditz made them sound, and Goku and Piccolo just barely beat Raditz, you know it would be close too. And it was. Loved it.

I think the Cell Saga is the best from an entertainment standpoint but Frieza is the narrative peak of the series easily.
I like the Cell Saga the most because everybody got some kind of shine. Vegeta was the first Saiyan to show that Saiyans can surpass SSJ. Trunks had the most dramatic power up in the anime. Goku had the best fight in the arc with Cell imo. Gohan doesn't need to be explained.
Krillin played a major role in the plot by not destroying 18 when he had the chance. Tien had a standout moment with his Tri Beam. Yamcha had some shine when 19 and 20 mistakened him for Goku before they saw him with their eyes. Piccolo surpassed SSJ and effected the entire series by fusing with Kami making the Dragonballs disappear.
Not to mention nearly every fight and transformation sequence was epic. I love the Android and Cell sagas

Love the video as always. I got to go with the Frieza Saga. I'm an OG fan, mom having the satellite tv I was able to see Japanese animation, and DBZ was it. I watched DB and when I found out there was a continuation to the story in Z it blew my mind as a kid. I want to say this was like '95 or '96. The Frieza saga was so good and I feel is still the best arc cause it was like a complete Dragon Ball story. The Cell arc wasn';t really all about the dragonballs it was more about staying alive and saving the planet. Dr. Gero and none of the androids were looking for the dragonballs as well as Majin Buu saga. So I lean towards the Frieza saga because it was a dragonball story. Think about it, the story takes place on King Piccolo world and his rival, Goku's son, Gohan is one of the main protectors of the people along with Krillin and Bulma. Seeing Gohan's growth in that arc as a warrior and a person who will no longer standby and seeing other get hurt. Gohan became a warrior in that arc., he took on every villain that came across their path, and even took a gut shot from Vegeta(lol). Krillin got his power up and was with his best friend son along with Bulma trying to wish back Yamacha, Tien and Piccolo. Original characters from the original story. We got to see the Z fighters fight along Vegeta for the first time and the introduction, somewhat of multiple transformations. Not to mention Goku fulfilling the prophecy of the Super Sayian. So to me Frieza Saga reigns supreme due to the fact the whole arc was based on strategy up until the final battle, the location taking place on King Piccolo's home world, Gohan becoming a warrior , it was a dragonball story, Goku fulfilling the prophecy, finding out what happened to Planet Vegeta and also the fights. We can not overlook the multiple characters with the multiple fights. That was awesome. The Frieza saga had the best fights.

I prefer the Frieza saga over the Cell saga but it's definitely close. My main issue with the Cell saga is, Cell doesn't really seem to have a motive for why he's evil. Frieza is running a galactic genocidal empire, he wants the dragonballs to solidfy his power in the universe. Cell just wants to unite with the androids which he does successfully, but it ends there. If Cell were to be successful over the Z fighters, then what would he do? enslave the remaining humans? For what purpose? The stakes just seemed so much higher in the Frieza saga, namekian genocide, dragonballs (both stopping vegeta / Frieza and using them to wish their friends back to life), defeating an evil genocidal galactic ruler.

As an adult i can see the frieza sagas merits and can even concede it is potentially the better saga but i still prefer Cell. I mean that moment of him going through the floors of a tv building and they were flipping through the channels and he was always there and then aiming a blast at the map to illustrate how he would destroy the world and then blowing out the back of the building and everything behind it from the city to the mountains was such an epic villain moment to me.

It's funny when you think about how the Frieza Saga only lasted as long as it did because Frieza didn't crush the Dragon Team despite having so many chances to do so. All of that playing around with his food resulted in awakening the Super Saiyan of legend that took him down.
When you look at the Cell & Buu Sagas, the Dragon Team had so many chances to eliminate threats either through their superior power OR knowledge of what NOT to do in order to help the bad guy(s) reach even higher levels of power.

I like the Cell arc a bit more out of some structural aspects. The Namek and Android arc (pre-Freza and pre-Cell appearing) are equally good to me, but the first halves of the arcs though they change a bit when they show up imo. Unlike the Freeza arc, Goku in the Cell arc was training on screen and it there was a lot of preperation focus on it (I prefer training subplots more so than just random rage boosts, which is an aspect I like more in the Super Manga than the anime), as opposed to just off screen stuff we got from the Saiyan arc and Namek arc and the jumps in power didnt seem as sudden in gap as they are in the Freeza arc or Saiyan to Freeza range. Goku didnt seem like he had these wild jumps he did from Earth to Namek or come in to save the day like he did in both the Saiyan and Namek arc. The Cell arc he was there with the other characters working on training.
Cell also was one of the only villains that had to earn his transformaton as a villain. Super Buu did a little, but Freeza just had forms to pull out of his ass and when that part of the arc happened, it dragged on so long and didnt feel like anything new was happening sitting through Freeza just messing around with the characters and transforming everytime someone shown up. Where as Cell he only transformed when he got closer to his goal, and it was only once in very spaced out moments in the arc, which gave the forms better build up as opposed to Freeza just rushing through his and being invincible for the whole thing before Goku shows up. Super Perfect Cell also came at a bigger surprise with suspense. Freeza's forms didnt. The Freeza fight vs everyone just didnt have much suspense to me. Freeza even kills Krillin twice in it. Where as 16 dies in a sacrificial moment that you knew was permanent.

I love both but I give it to Cell, everyone was apart of that arc even if they all weren't that useful. I also feel like Namek dragged on like crazy and left me missing the Earth and all of the familiar locations, the Cell arc focuses on many parts of the planet and there are so many twists and turns.

Cell saga is my favorite because it feels like the finale to all of the story building up to it. The consequences of the Red Ribbon Army come back to bite Goku, Trunks is a cool mystery character, Gohan gets the payoff for all of his buildup, and nearly everybody gets a chance to shine at some point in the story. If the series decided to end with the Cell Games (like DBZA), it would be a good finale

    Namek&Freiza was imo PEAK DBZ.
Don't get me wrong Cell was Absolutely 1000% 🔥
But the Namek&Freiza energy hit diffrent when you see the character development and the way the story builds and shapes up.. plus that cat & mouse game is CRAZY gooD!!
And let's talk about the Villin!!!
Bruh...... FREZIA!....was one of them ONES!
Took a Legendary to beat him & STILL survived
Took a Universal SpiritBOmB to the CHIN!
SURVIVED A Exsploding Plantet (while Injured)
Did not have Regeneration & still put in that Work.
    Had a Galactic Empire.
Enslaved a prince and made the king his Vassle.
Had the Universe including King Ki Shook!
To me imo Frieza will Always be the ultimate villan in DBZ. And Namek&Freiza will forever be the GOAT imo
