They bask in the illusion that people, much like material objects, are easily replaceable.
Narcissists perceive individuals as objects, substitutable commodities that can be discarded and replaced at will. To them, people hold a value akin to material possessions; a broken chair can be replaced by purchasing a new one, a shattered coffee mug can be substituted with a fresh purchase. They view these occurrences as minor inconveniences, not catastrophic events.
However, the reality of human relationships is quite distinct from this narcissistic perspective. The loss of a person who genuinely cared for the narcissist, who was committed to making the relationship work, who was ready to make sacrifices, and whom the narcissist took for granted, is a significant blow. The narcissist's actions can lead to a point where the other person loses the capacity to care for the narcissist. This loss is not easily mendable, and the person who dedicated so much to the narcissist is not effortlessly replaceable.
Yet, in the narcissist's mindset, this fact is often overlooked or forgotten. It is a lesson they tend to learn late, usually after they have pushed away many people, not just a single individual. Narcissists have a tendency to push away those around them; it is part of their modus operandi. They prioritize their needs and desires, exploiting others to serve their purposes.
