Let me share a few reasons why narcissists ruin themselves.
Firstly, narcissists ruin themselves because they're never content. They always believe something better is out there, never feeling satisfied with their current situation or partner. No matter who you are, satisfying a narcissist is impossible. This is often seen among Hollywood couples who appear to have it all, yet one partner becomes restless, seeking more excitement and novelty. Narcissists crave constant excitement, disliking the predictability of daily life. They detest routine because they find it dull. Their life revolves around seeking new thrills and pleasures due to an underlying dissatisfaction and misery, even if it's not consciously acknowledged. On the surface, they might seem fine, often pretending to have a fantastic life on social media with posts about vacations, travels to Europe, or visiting landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, making others believe they lead an enviable life. However, deep down, they're never truly satisfied because their desire for new thrills and constant validation from different people never ceases.
This is why dealing with covert narcissists can often be challenging. To outsiders, they present themselves as exceptionally kind and admirable, primarily because they are deeply concerned about maintaining a favorable image. They aim for these people to see them as wonderful and likable individuals. In doing so, they might indirectly attempt to cast you in a negative light, as they overly flatter and charm those around them. The motivation behind their eagerness to please outsiders is partly because they believe these connections might be useful in the future. Therefore, they build and maintain this network. Conversely, they might treat you poorly in private since they feel they've already secured your loyalty and don't need to make an effort anymore, believing you won't leave.
