Funimation has recently wrapped up Dragon Ball Super... 18 months after the Japanese concluded the story... and it's gotten me wondering. Which dub of the show do people think did a better job?
The English or the Japanese. In this video I compare Sean Schemmel's performance with Masako Nozawa for Goku, Chris Ayres with Ryūsei Nakao and Christopher Sabat with Ryo Horikawa.
We look at Goku enraged, Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken x10, Vegeta's Final Flash, Freeza and much much more. ENJOY!

Weird cause for me I think he roars and screams suck compared to Z. They used way to much effects on his voice and it just sounds bad. Should have toned down the effects and let us hear his primal scream. Like ssj3 transformation in Z. It was like 90% his voice with 10% effects added to his voice. Really disappointed me as I love the dub of Z.
I think certain points sub is better, such as fight scenes or interactions, but there are a few dub gems, such as gokus ssb roar when zamasu tells him that chichi and goten were murdered and dont shoot hes not black. Overall, the sub just makes it feel like what Akira Toriyama wanted from the start

I don't think Freeza was actually racist at all in the Japanese version. Did he ever used the Term "Monkey" in the sub?
@@EAN743 He stopped referring to Goku as "saru" after the Namek saga in Japanese. The English dub overplays his "racism/Speciesism" probably due to the history of the US. It gets annoying that people think that's a big part of his character when it isn't. Frieza might have his reason for belittling Saiyans but he has never proclaimed his race or others above them, he's always proclaimed himself superior to all.

Seems like even funimation new it was bad. I was excited to watch episode 110 but when the song started playing I was wondering why the music was so quite compared to the Japanese version, but when the singing started I realized why.

-All the illusions of the villains have their individual laughs and grunts. In the JP version they all sounded the exact same. Very small, but adds to the feeling

I really loved him as goku for years and yes it is impossible/hypocritical to hold someone to a standard.

@@TubaBluba789 Yeah. Every single word in that entire speech is absolutely dripping with raw, seething rage. I also like how it also sounds a little bit like Goku is fighting back tears as well. He wants to be sad at the death of those he loves but there's no time to mourn. The mixture of sadness and absolute burning hate in the delivery is so perfect.

It’s the English dub that gets me with the rage and hatred with the what sounds like multiple voices is crazyyyy
The thing I LOVE about nozowas performance is that she doesn’t need all that grunting and scratching her voice to sound angry or threatening: it’s all in her solid subtlety in the pausing between sentences and commanding presence

One of my personal favorite lines in the english dub was when Vegeta powered up to Royal Blue, he says "I gave my word, from one Saiyan to another and I have to keep it." I know Mark isn't exactly a fan of most of Vegeta's moments in Super, but that delivery made a pretty good transformation sequence really awesome. He's not just fighting for his family, but also an entire civilization of Saiyans he promised to bring back. Mentor Vegeta is great.

Vegeta’s voice in Japanese doesn’t fit him tho he sounds like a teen and not a saiyan Prince who never lets down his pride or maybe it’s just that I got used to the dubbed version

@@incognitoman2047 And Frieza's english voice sounds like a squeaky toy. It doesn't matter how a voice "SOUNDS" it only matters if the performances are good. Vegeta's Japanese voice is done so on purpose, since the VA also voiced Reinhard von Lohengramm and he CAN do deep voices when needed.

Personally I've always thought that adult Goku's voice (done by Masako Nozawa, who has been every voice of goku from the beginning) in Japanese doesn't fit but Sean Schemmel's English dub voice fits Goku's look. Goku is this hulk of a man yet he has a childish/ female voice which just confuses me. The only difference is the script makes the English Dubs bad for so many shows. Many english voice actors are great but the script doesn't do them any favors.
But it makes sense in a way, since goku is like a child with anything besides fighting and even when he fights he does it out of pure joy, for him is a game. Vegeta likes fighting too, but he likes for the reason of being the best, not out of pure joy like goku
It's a good thing Dragon Ball's dub is just as good and in my opinon, sometimes even better.
@@angeltzepesh1 That’s the problem. Dragon ball super made Goku too childish which consequently made his whole character feel like a child in a man’s body.
I always hated Sub Goku’s voice actor because it never fit his character. Especially for the TOP, which I loved in dub because you could hear emotion and the roars gave me goosebumps unlike sub where I just kinda scoffed.

It fits Goku more than English. On top of that the script is changed to fit Japanese not the other way around so you can only write it a certain way. You get way more context in Japanese.

I've been a huge Dragon Ball fan my whole life, since watching rented ocean dub VHS tapes from Hastings to watching Funimation on Toonami as a kid and watching the original Japanese for the run of super, then rewatching the entire series in the Japanese format as an adult. The original Japanese voice cast is amazing and their performance impeccable, but for me personally the Funimation cast will always resonate more with me because it is my child hood and they have become the default for what I think the characters sound like because of that.
After watching through Jojo’s Dub, I was DYING in the tournament of Power with Hit and Jiren(Voiced by Jotaro and Dio’s English Voice Actors ironically)
Dub and Sub are pretty much even for this series. Both do things better and both do things worse.

I honestly watched it in Japanese/sub. It took some while to get used to. Frieza's voice was so friggin smooth tho and I love Whis's voice in japanese. It grew on me after 10 episodes. Goku in Japanese took longer. Kinda endearing how the same woman voiced him the entire show running time :)
Making a point to go back and rewatch all your content (priority to Dragon Ball) again. Sucks to see what happened over the holidays and sucks to not see as many videos come from your channel. With that, I know I a lot of us are waiting to hear more of your thoughts on the upcoming movie this April. You’re one of the biggest voices to a lot of folks on DB character progression and story/narrative arcs. Too understandable that you’re probably still apprehensive over the whole ordeal I’m sure you’re still battling. Regardless, have to let you know, the viewers still love you Mark. You’re a talented dude and we haven’t forgotten… Haven’t forgotten your talent, the joy you bring folks through your content, the knowledge or the deeper inter workings of plot that you impart, and your genuinely positive and hopeful spirit. There is no way that line was not a deliberate joke. Funimation was taking advantage of the fact that they'd be airing on adult swim, so they could do a lot more adult dialogue that just wouldn't fly on regular kid's tv.

Actually Mark, they use the title Lord in place of “Sama” most of the time and Freeza not using that title still conveys the disrespect just as well in English

There isn't really an equivalent to sama in the English language either. Lord is about as close in meaning as it gets without going full Japanglish.

Glad to see this back up. When I first watched this 2 years ago, the only poll I chose in a heartbeat was Freeza on the English side because it felt like Chris Ayres was born for the role. He will be forever missed. Love and Laughter always.

I grew up with the English dub of dragon ball z, so Sean Schimmel’s performance especially in rage-filled moments (like the Frieza saga and Goku black arc) is really iconic and’ll always be my favourite

I feel like voice cracks in moments of frustration really do it for me. It felt so good to listen to in the “you’re going to regret telling me that” scene with Schemmel and, going into another anime, Chapin’s delivery with Bakugo in My Hero Academia episode 61. I have only heard voice cracks once in Japanese dubs and quite a few times in English. I think it’s either because of direction in Japan or because it’s a sign of throat strain
The goku frog sound after jiren hit him was hilarious in japanese version
Chris Ayres wasn't Frieza at the beginning of the TOP arc, he was sick at the time so Daman Mills took over, but Ayres returned in the middle of the arc at some point.
Yeah, I was surprised Mark just gave all the credit to Chris (who is a great Frieza), but it's even cooler that the dub has two good Friezas

@@apringler9447 , this guy gets it. Also, the subbed is typically too literally translated. It's come off as clunky and forced. The Dub actually changes the languages as Well as the language style 👍
I prefer the dub, but I do understand why people would rather watch sub.
1. Japanese comes out first
2. Japanese is original, so translation errors do not exist.

I like how this review doesn't just focus on the screaming but also how the voice actors visualize what's happening in a scene

If you replace the English "Ultimate Battle" with the Japanese version, then I prefer the English Dub, but without that....man it really kills the mood in some of the most climactic moments of the show.

Just so you're aware, it was Chris who wanted Drummomd to come back. He is the one who got it done
On top of that, the two of them agreed, if Ocean dubs Super, they'll happily do it again.
Chris is good at getting his way that way. Being the casting director and a de facto manager at Funimation does have its perks after all. He did get the TFS guys to do a cameo on Kai after all, though it was supposedly cut from the TV broadcast.

Honestly when the English voice actor's voice cracks while screaming. It sounds. Strangely natural
Everyone's got the "this man isn't Black" line, but my other favorite is when Goku's fighting Dyspo in the dub: "I've got my own tricks, silly rabbit."

Sean is a way better screamer than Nozawa and way better in battle scenes imo. However, Nozawa is a way better performer and I way prefer the softer tones of Nozawa when it comes to goku's speech.

When Goku got mad at Jiren for trying to blast the spectators and yelled, the dub killed it! You can truly hear the emotion in his voice. Props to Sean Schemmel.

Personally I do not like the dub at all, I started watching DB in English but when I found out the original Japanese it was hard to go back to English as I vastly prefer the more authentic Japanese version. I love the child like performance Nozawa delivers which at times can be very serious and much deeper. It makes for a more balanced Goku and is more true to Toriyamas original work. Honestly I prefer the Japanese OST and all the other characters Japanese voice actors.
I loved Belmond’s English dub it was so perfect I cried painful tears of joy when Luke skywalkers actor coulda been him instead.
Honestly overall I like the dub more because the voices feel more powerful but tense scenes like frieza’s case I like more in Japanese but they’re close just Belmond is here trolling us
Sean's voice is a lot more stressed during scenes where Goku is enraged. I think this delivers a better impact than just Masako screaming like she always does.

Don't forget that there was a second Frieza voice in the dub, during the whole Res F arc and a few early episodes of the ToP arc. Chris Aryes was in the hospital with a terminal illness at the time. Luckily, he seems to be doing better now, as he was able to return for the later tournament episodes and the entire Broly movie.
