Dragon Ball TV Specials | REVIEW

- Опубликовано: 30 окт 2019
- Dragon Ball has some great TV Specials and today I am going to watch The History of Trunks and Dragon Ball GT: A Hero's Legacy.
Dragon Ball Heroes has been calling my name lately and I've been ignoring it for as long as I can. In this review of the specials I look at the story and the inconsistencies with each one.
Will I like a Dragon Ball GT Story? STAY TUNED!

Is Dragon Ball GT good?
No. But perhaps that special is.
Since it doesn't follow any manga arc structure the pacing is shit and the fights suck
But it's not nearly as bad as people say
It's okay. I loved ssj4 and the return of saiyans actually relying on a ''primal'' state other than just a blonde/golden warrior of anger ( i love super saiyans tho)
It has good aspects and themes but overall has too many parts of wasted potential and annoying parts which honestly hurts it more than super because it’s an end point. It might’ve been the timing that gave it a retroactively bad rep but also possible burn out.
The Japanese Dub is decent, but the Funimation dub is trash. I hate how the Funimation soundtrack is terrible compared to Japanese.
Mark: "These aren't films they're TV specials."
Also Mark: "This film.."
Wait. That's illegal
@MultiTarded But he said "not films"
@MultiTarded This youtube video isn't film though, it's digital. No film reels were involved here. Film and movie are synonyms, "movie" literally meaning moving pictures and "film" referring to the rolls of film on reels from which those moving pictures are projected. Playing in theaters doesn't have anything to do with the classification, there are made-for-t.v. movies after all.
@MultiTarded Wartime propaganda commercials wouldn't be film either since they're commercials, just like how an advertisement for a The Lord of the Rings wouldn't be called a movie. "Movie" is just a slang term for motion picture and "Film" is just a slang term for the same thing but referencing the material used to store the pictures. Oh and if it's not daytime then the phrase would be "good evening".
@Dark Tiger Shark Max Sorry for derailing, but nice profile pic. The Invizimals series was my childhood.
When you don't pair _The History of Trunks_ with _Bardock: The Father of Goku_ :
Dragonball Community: *surprised Pickachu face*
He alredy has seen bardock father of goku thats why he didnt speak about ut here
Akira Toriyama: FATHER OF GOKU IS NOT CANON ANYMORE
Dragonball community: surprised pikachu face
What about Hey Son Goku and Friend’s Return
Montel Bradley
It’s cannon. Tarble was referenced in BoG
What about the Frieza attack on the Saiyans?
The best part about the History of Trunks is when he slams the ground AFTER turning Super Saiyan. Not only is he angry that he achieved the power when it was too late, but he knows that it's still not enough.
Honestly I always saw The GT Special as a backdoor Pilot to a series that never got made.
And I always wished it did
And I expected that series for a while.

It was meant to be an ending because they thought that they were only going to get 40 episodes.

In my opinion that’s the route they should’ve taken with GT to begin with.

Huzaifa Yousaf Goku is around average height. He’s referencing the scene from tfs the history of trunks abridged, when bulma’s on her computer on a dating site trying to meet a man like Vegeta.

We need a dragon ball gt super
Mamba pretty hot tho. But the GT special was awesome, I wish more people would talk about it
The issue with Toriyama’s ambiguity is that it leads people to draw their own conclusions on stuff and cement that as fact.

GT is like 5 great moments with an absolute trashfire of a series in between.
@@thecod2345 it's still a good scene. That's part of the "absolute trashfire of a series" part of my comment. They knew they were doing a big Piccolo sacrifice yet couldn't even have him participate of the arc a bit more.
This video has given me newfound appreciation for the GT Special.
Seriously, thanks for uploading this, I've decided to rewatch it (but this time the subbed version) for the first time in almost half a decade just because of this video.

GT might have it's problems, but it was god damn fun to watch.
@Brandon I genuinely don't see what's so bad about the Black Star Saga. It's always been my favorite, is arguably one of the most memorable aspects about GT ( or at least as much as the other Saga's). I get it has its flaws, everything does, but from an objective point of view, it serves it's purpose in the story pretty darn well.
Dualtone it was the best part of GT for me

"how does Trunks survive this?"
Easy. Just look at the character's of the Androids. They were always going on about how bored they are, and Trunks was amusing and weak enough to be left alive for a bit longer, especially with Gohan's death. They probably should have made that a bit more obvious though.
It is obvious as hell because that's reason Gohan was left alive after multiple times confronting them, they do the same exact thing in the present, they felt no need to mention this in the special.
@@sarthakarora3212 And Trunks was behind Gohan...he was far smaller threat. Soo keeping him alive ...because is fun to have him fight you time to time would make sense.
Naaaaah 18 called dibs
Yea, my only problem with the video is that one nitpicky flaw he saw in the special, I think it’s way too obvious looking at their character that they would leave him alive, I don’t even think they needed to make it more obvious. It’s like he skipped a detail of their characters entirely.
@@calmrage8626 No, but the problem is that nothing the Androids do or say even remotely implies they were going to let him live. They talked about killing him SEVERAL TIMES in the middle of the fight, and then 18 proceeded to blast him point blank after beating him within an inch of his life. If they really wanted to leave him alive, they would've just left him there lying unconscious instead of going out of their way to deliver a killing blow (with tons of dramatic emphasis no less).

@@LwNickV it's believable if you consider the fact that transformations have always been a multiplier of the base power (SSJ is x50); Goku Jr. is probably weaker than even original DB Goku which makes SSJ Goku Jr. not that powerful
@@LwNickV Well it makes sense. Goku jr is less than 5 percent sayain heritage, and even Pan couldn't do super sayain which shows how low the sayain genes are. Goku jr is lucky that he can even tap into that power, but since he basically has more human heritage than sayain heritage, obviously his form is weaker.

Mark finally Stepped Into the Grand Tour (Grand Tour, Grand Tour)
DragonBall GT
Aaaaaaaaahhhhh, aaaaaaaahhhh...
STEP INTO THE GRAND TOUR!
Are you proud of yourself
I found this to be more funny than it probably is. I don't know, I'm too busy stepping into the grand tour.
Back when I was a kid, I used to own A Hero's Legacy and I simply adored it.
I didnt know much of the lore of dragonball, but I knew how tough it is for Goku Jr to manage literally being Goku's ancestor.
The scene with grandma Pan literally mirrored Uncle Ben's phrase to Peter Parker. It was cathartic since I just got into spiderman too lol.
(Also, Mamba is best girl.)
you mean Goku's descendant
I got chills when he started talking about the GT special
I was amazed that the majority of the Dragon ball movies were older then me and made realize Dragon Ball aired earlier then it did on Toonami.
I know it's ridiculous now to not know that, but when you are young, you are thinking that's first airing when you first seen it.
How old are you?
@@maximilianraley2457 25
The US was insanely late to the party on Dragon Ball lmao
Bruh, I had a bunch of dragon ball games as a kid back in 2009, I had thought Dragon Ball was still airing on T.V. I never knew that Dragon Ball ended in the 1990's until a couple of years ago. I'm still confused on how dragon ball managed to keep its popularity if it had ended over 15 years ago.
I always loved the Goku Jr special. It was such a good story. I literally felt sad and depressed since it was literally the end of Dragon Ball. This shit had me all emotional lol. Old anime can really hit you in the gut man. More than these new anime.
EDIT:
Let me clarify some things a bit because I think my original comment portray's the wrong message here. I never have and never will say that new anime sucks as I mostly watch new anime anyway. A ton of new anime can seriously punch you in the gut and pull at your heart strings when its done right and a lot of em do indeed get it right like Clannad, A Lull in The Sea, Hero Academia, Anohana for example. New anime is awesome. I'm currently waiting on Demon Slayer movie to come out lol. I hope we get a season 2 and I can't wait for Attack On Titan S4!
I don't watch much older anime tbh but I feel like when I do, they tend to get me right in the feels a bit more than new anime sometimes. I think its a combination of the visual style, lighting and that sad violin orchestra music I suppose. I dunno lol. Hope that cleared things up.
It's funny how the specials can do more if not better than most of these movies yet these bland movie characters are remembered because.... They did a cool fight? Don't get me wrong i love cooler and Turles even though both don't really have a story or even much character espically turles until xenoverse 2 that is. This is kinda why i'd like another special that isn't hinged on the fact that it has to be for the kids or has to be so happy go lucky. Even if that isn't very possible.

Dbgt in Japanese isnt bad

Dragonball gt was never terrible. It had amazing ideas and some examples of great execution, and the general idea of combining the grand space adventure from z and the silly, fun grail-quest adventure from dragon ball.
And Baby we can't forget baby. Dunno with super 17 tho it was all over the place with some cool things expanded on like opening hell.

i don't know if i will accurately explain myself here...but while GT has good concepts, i just couldn't enjoy its "vibe." it's artstyle was literally darker than most other Dragonball material, and some of it's character designs were either weird or gross.
i also wish they didn't revert Goku back to a kid.
Super Saiyan 4, like many say, was still fantastic despite all this.
my tits I love the style of GT, but I can see why one wouldn’t. I didn’t dislike any character designs, but I’ve been told I have tacky taste anyway. 😂. I didn’t have an issue with kid Goku, but I didn’t necessarily like it either. And hell yeah. Ss4 was incredible.

The History of Trunks was good it was very dark and depressing and I like some dark shit.
History of Trunks is probably most emotional and complex that the Dragon Ball franchise will ever offer.
Ikr when trunks is crying over gohan's death at a raining night it really sets the mood and I want more of this in super
If you've watched history of trunks before and know Trunks' full story it seriously makes the Cell and Zamasu arcs so much better. That final goodbye scene in the Zamasu arc where trunks thinks about future Gohan and breaks down crying was a heartbreaker dude. They had real balls to end his story on such a tragic note
K
Bruce Banana it’s not very complex. Emotional sure, but certainly not complex. Everything is pretty simple.
I swear I started to tear up when Goku took up the Dragon Ball, the feels and the memories of years ago when I was a child were all over my head

@@geroleocata Exactly, which is why unlike the popular opinion, I like the Bardock from Minus/Broly more as for him, he put 2 and 2 together and went off his gut rather than some random dumb future visions and having Dodoria killed him for no reason but to cause a climax...
Only thing I didnt really like was the lack of Bardock friends as I really liked them.
I still prefer the Bardock special. He was a more layered and nuanced character. Just because it isn't in the manga does not mean it's bad.

So glad to see “ A Heroes Legacy” finally get some love!
So glad someone else enjoyed the GT special. I wasn't, and still am not a big fan of GT. But the special was so interesting and has such a brilliant moment with Goku & Goku Jr. Fantastic watch
I remember seeing the Trunks special as a kid, it sucked me into the world so much. I really felt the desolation of his future, where none of the characters but Gohan are left alive. It was so fantastic to me back then.
The fist time I watched the gt special I cried so much in the end.
But after some years battle of gods is a thing.
When I heard dragon Ball super was coming out I was thinking Goku jr
I've always had a soft spot for GT, and while I can easily admit, it had a LOT of problems... It had quite a lot of strengths, too. And this special encapsulates a lot of great things about GT. If all, or even most of GT had been written like a Hero's Legacy was... then I think GT could have been something amazing.
3:45 this scene is the saddest thing on all of dragon ball , because we watched gohan grew and see him die like that is really sad, there is no heroic dead , there was no one to avenge him, just loneliness on a puddle of blood and rain

Nice reviews!
I was first introduced to Trunks' backstory by the Japanese manga, so when I read an anime-comic book (a manga book made of captures of the show) it felt strange that Trunks didn't have his SS form before the death of Gohan (he has it in the manga). But it works pretty well and does'nt affect the overall narrative so I guess I was too picky back then.
On the other hand, I have never watched the GT special, but after this review I feel interested in watching. Glad you reviewed it!
Thanks for your great work!
A Hero’s Legacy is special to me. The storytelling and character development was so well done and seeing Goku appear to help him his descendant in the end was truly icing on the cake. For me, it was like I would never see Goku and the gang until the OVA and Super change that. Still has the feels regardless though and is definitely worth the watch for open minded fans.

When you were ripping GT at the start, I was genuinely hopeful that you’d love the GT special as much as I do!
If GT started, or continued, from that point with Goku Jr. et al. I feel it’d be much better received by fans.
“When has death been a factor?” Totally Not Mark, goku died from a virus, hence natural causes. People cannot be wished back if they died naturally. Even if piccolo wasn’t the first to die, the dragon balls wouldn’t work
He never said Goku should’ve been wished back, he was saying he and King Kai should’ve seen the Android situation and made contact. Also the other z-fighters didn’t die of natural causes so they had no excuse
@@tiablue9106 Well if Piccolo dies by any cause then that's it for the Dragon Balls. I'd assume the Androids got to him before they could gather them. That's one excuse.
Another one would be how every single "Z fighter" including Goku and Vegeta was already wished back. I think this was before the balls stopped caring about that shit.
Honestly my only complaint about this special, and it includes the manga, is why Bulma builds a freaking time machine instead of just making a spaceship and going to Namek and use their Dragon Ball.
+lug: that was basically what I said. The main problem wasn’t “they all should’ve gotten wished back” (except, like u said, with the Namekian Dragon Balls), it was that they were acting like “they should’ve known shit was going down on Earth and done something”. Being in otherworld stopped preventing characters from having a stake in the plot once King Kai was established
@@iug5672 Here's my two cents on that; it would have attracted too much attention. Using a space ship may have set off one of their scanners or even just the sight of it flying into the air would have alerted the androids to attack it.

When you started reviewing movies, I was expecting this one. Yes, I'm one of them, I didn't know, ok? I saw this on TV long ago and I was baffled by how good it was. I am among them that think Dragon Ball GT is actually good, not amazing, but not as terrible as people say. This one shows what Dragon Ball should be all about. Think about it, the best stories are where the focus is on getting the Dragon Balls, and it falters when it focuses on only fights.
If they release a new Dragon Ball where Goku is not the main, heck where none of the classic characters appears, I'll be 100% over that thing. Scratch the z warriors, scratch the Saiyans and scratch the epic larger than life fights. Just focus on someone trying to get the Dragon Balls to get a wish granted, making friends, enemies and having adventures. That's what a Dragon Ball tale is.
12:12 "Why has no one talked about this" Age, my friend. Also the fact that most people that watch anime nowadays stray away from anything related to dbz. Especially people that have only started watching it. I know Dbz is widely popular around the globe, but i somehow still don't feel like it gets the love it deserves. This may sound like bs coming from a fanboy but i really feel like it isn't.
I always love some shout-outs to every Evanescence AMV EVER
Early 2000's, what a horrible time to be alive
Its nostalgic tho
Yes I feel the same way, that's the point.
I am referring one catchphrase of RUclipsr Rebel Taxi.
@@Walt_Raleigh oh ok
The GT special is forgotten because "GT" is in the title. If Toriyama was attached and changed nothing about the script (same goes GT itself) people would've hailed it the true successor to Z
*See's Mark's updated avatar*
Whoa, Mark, you've lost a LOT of weight. You eating okay?
The Goku jr. Stuff is easily the best part of GT
"They're not films, they're TV specials"
Later calls them films anyway
Everyone makes mistakes
but I see your point.
The Future Trunks Special was Legendary. Goku's Legacy Special was pretty ok.
TNM: I've never seen the TV specials
Everyone who has: Grabs the tissues
They really said fuck it and made them all sad
GT's not....THAT bad.
The first arc is, but the rest is arguably on Super's level.
Baby Saga is better than all of super
@@JokerL1000 Disagree, it's a real close one because they could've been so much better but in my eyes, the Goku Black arc just takes it over the Baby saga.
@@godzillakingofthemonsters5812 all the Super arcs are trash story wise. With great concepts
Bougie Joker the same can be said of GT...both GT and Super had good ideas with bad implementation. Precisely because neither of them could honestly top the originals in a satisfying way. That’s precisely why people argue that both GT and Super are good/bad because of preferences of the ideas presented.
@@JokerL1000 I could say the same for GT if we're putting them on the same scale of criticism.
My main reason for saying the Black arc is better is thanks to Mr. Rosė himself. As a villain, he's much more believable and enjoyable than Baby to watch. And a good villain should be able to carry a story for themselves.
