How is Super Dragon Ball Heroes the worst thing in the history of anime. Okay maybe I'm being dramatic. But it's still a bad series. In this review I will attempt to explain how this series works and what I think of the "story".
It's been over a year since I've dedicated my channel to Dragon Ball and in a way it feels good to be back... But something is missing. Wait for the end of the video.

Dragon Ball Heroes, Super Dragon Ball Heroes and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 1/2 are based on Dragon Ball Online, but both have already separated from what that original game was, at this point each one adapts things as they want, DBX began to adapt ideas from SDBH

It feels like the writers put all their 5 year-olds in a room together with every Dragon Ball toy ever made and recorded it. Then that recording was destroyed in an accident and the writers tried to recreate the children’s adventures from memory. That ended up being the script.
@Crusher Corps the hell are you talking about? You do know this video is about Super Dragon Ball Heroes and not an actual mainline series? I don’t know if you meant to reply to someone else or if you honestly know nothing about how narrative elements and plot structure are supposed to work, but that was a dumb insult to drop without backing up your stance. Hell, Mark demonstrated repeatedly how bunked up the plot of SDBH is in this very video.

Don't forget Heroes at its heart is a promotional anime. The real story is in the games as well as the game manuals. If a piece information is missing, it's either in the manga or the games.

DBH is literaly a franchise that is for promoting a card game of dragon ball with crazy, fan service characters that could never be introduced in the canon manga or anime. Its literaly supposed to be fun and wacky and showcase crazy characters that people never thought would exist. Idk why people are delving into the plot of a promotional anime for a card game.

It is now, but not in OGDB and Z but it starts to fall down at Cell Saga, it was still good overall but it has more flaws than Frieza and Saiyan Saga, and Buu saga is a mess. GT and Super sucks and Heroes is god awful

Buu saga has Fusion, Great Saiyaman, Super Spirit Bomb, everything to do with Majin Vegeta, Ultimate Gohan walking up to Super Buu, Human Extinction Attack
the other arcs are objectively better in terms of pacing and structure but the Buu arc simply has most of the things people remember Dragon Ball Z for especially their reach with dragon ball as a whole going forward

Just occurred to me that Mark has no clue about any of the Xenoverse games so he would have no way of knowing who Towa, Mira, and Toki Toki are
To be fair, knowing who they are adds absolutely nothing to the completely bananas storyline.
That said, while the Xenoverse games are ALSO pretty stupid, they at least TRY, and I did like Towa and Mira.

I’m pretty sure the whole series is just a commercial for the game (it’s basically the Old Spice commercials if you strung them together and pretended to attempt to creative a narrative)
you know, many of these characters you say are random and forgotten are actually well established in the super dragon ball heroes lore like demigra, salsa, and putin.
Fu's entire existence can be summed up as; "I am here to mess stuff up, feel free to stop me that's cool. I don't really care."

Me: These are villain characters that are pivotal to the plots of Xenoverse 1&2. In fact a lot of elements from Super Dragon Ball Heroes are carried over from those games as they take place in the same universe.
isn't it technically the other way around? weren't they introduced in heroes and then proceeded to be shown in xenoverse and fusions to symbolize to players that the games were considered part of the heroes universe?

i had to do some fact checks, as i know dragon ball heroes did exist before xenoverse.
the original arcade machine came out on November 11th 2010, from what ive managed to find, towa and mira became cards in the game in the god mission update in 2015 which i quote "contains characters from Dragon Ball: Yo! Son Goku and His Friends Return!!, Dragon Ball Z: Resurrection ‘F’, and Dragon Ball Online" Mira being released in set GDM2 and towa in set GDM4.
Super dragon ball heroes launched in 2016 which lines up with xenoverse.
As for where the two originate, i still haven't found a decent source, but they could just be from dragon ball online/played a role as villain's in the original heroes run.

The biggest “I’m gonna review OG dragon ball” announcement and I love it
I just feel like it's important to clarify for anyone confused, and for Mark too, that characters like Towa, Mira, Demigra and Fu are actually from Dragon Ball Online. DB Online has a long and complicated history, since it was a big deal that it was canon when it released, a lot of its content is still considered to be canon. Towa and Mira are an example, and the short green Yardrat type are another example. The two are more recognizable as characters from Xenoverse and Xenoverse 2, the latter of which finally made Fu into an adult, since he was a child in DB Online. Since the """series""" this video is covering deals with time travel, they threw in Xenoverse characters. Mark seemed to not understand this when making the video so I thought some clarification was necessary. I remember finding Fu somewhat compelling and Towa and Mira especially compelling in Xenoverse 2, but it's been years since I played the game.
I really couldn't tell you why they are here or if this is meant to follow up on Xenoverse 2 plotpoints, I can only say that I hope not because if that's the case, fans of these characters have such a travesty of a property to conclude them.

In all seriousness though, there is _one_ thing I love about this "Fuu Created A Universe" arc? Uh, it's the conversation from Vegeta and Turles about the nature of a Saiyan, and how Vegeta unlocks a new transformation by embracing both his evil acts and his good deeds, thus remembering Turles that it's about about being evil, it's just about fighting. Only for Turles to chuckle and go "I guess becoming a low-class Saiyan Warrior again wouldn't be so bad", and Vegeta smiles at him because he gets the implication of that. So, basically what Mark said. By far the highlight of the show.
I love this interaction because this, alongside the hilarious absurdity, is the sole reason why I even bother to watch Super Dragon Ball Heroes. Turles and Vegeta had _never_ interacted before this moment, and they had a pretty cool moment as a result of Super Dragon Ball Heroes being what it is. It's a shame it can't do that all the time, but I'm glad little nuggets of fun like this can exist from time to time.

For everyone mentioning Xenoverse 1 and 2, yes it’s clear Super DBH ties into the plot and characters of those games. But this series was marketed and sold as a separate thing from those games, and it’s ridiculous to expect the audience to have that much knowledge of all the events and characters from a pair of video games that can take hundreds of hours to complete. If Super DBH was interested in telling a good story, it would either spend more time setting up the status quo of Time Partollers, Towa, Mira, and etc for viewers who haven’t played the games. Or they would have write a story that doesn’t require you to have beaten 2 action MMO’s and the postgame of the sequel to understand it without reading a novel’s worth of info on a wiki. Good stories are made better by the extra info, not made comprehensible by said info
13:14 In the show’s defense, DB started out with Goku living in the woods thinking Bulma just wanted to show him her dirty ol fanny for his magicial wish granting orb, now he has the ability to move his body without thinking at times training under a literal god.
Narrative wise it is jarring but escalation wise it feels just about the same.

It isnt that jarring, with how the setting works being a xianxia with sci-fi elements, aliens, magical creatures, gods and myths are basically staples of the genre.
It's not that comparable. Goku's journey started as a search for the Dragon Balls and grew from there over a long period of time. The magical Dragon aspect is present since episode 1 and ends that arc with finding the Dragon Balls and summoning the dragon. This show goes in like 20 different directions that are only sorta vaguely related to eachother

When my friend introduced me to Dragon Ball, he specifically said I should watch the original series first. I'm honestly so glad he did, because even though I've watched and rewatched Z and Super several times since then, I've never watched through Dragon Ball again either, despite having fond memories of many parts of that whole series. So glad to hear you're reviewing them, might have to watch through myself!

I only watched the first 2 episodes of this and gave up. But listening to this recap I am now very glad I didn't waste my time. This thing is so damn silly.
Man I absolutely love the original Dragon Ball over Z, Super, GT, Heroes. Was my absolutely favorite and I rewatched it just a couple years ago and still absolutely loved it. Yes Mark, it does definitely still hold up!

I've been watching OG DB for the past few months, and I think it still holds up. Honestly, it wasn't until GT that things got weird in the franchise, but even GT paid great homage to OG DB and Z. It was the 20 years of non-canon video games and Super that have made this series into the eyeroll phenomenon that it is today.
GT was more heavily based on the OG than Z was. Things actually got weird when Z started.

OG Dragonball is a different genre, though. It's not a shonen. It has shonen stuff in it, but it IS primarily a gag manga. So.. I don't think it's very fair to compare OG DB to the rest? That's just me though.

Exactly, it isn't supposed to be some well thought out sotry in the first place. I think the problem with most peoples perception of SDBH is that they think of it as an actual series. When in reality, it was never supposed to be an actual coherent series, just a cool commerical. And for an elongated advertisement, it does pretty well showcasing the product it is advertising.

The thing with the Heroes anime, that you have to remember, is that it's an ad. There's no substance to the anime, because the substance IS the video game.
Every episode end with the reveal of a new character and/or transformation, because that's what they're advertising.
"Hey kids, look at this new character/transformation! Now you can play as them in the video game"
It's like a character trailer for a fighting game. It's meant to get you hyped for the character, but if you don't play the game, it doesn't mean much.
The quality of the Heroes anime has nothing to do with the quality of the series as a whole, (save for maybe how commercialized the series has become,) and is not worth getting upset over.

I don't think you know what this anime is. You're essentially expecting high quality story telling from what is basically a commercial. They have to have fast pacing if they want to show off the most things they can, in the LIMITED TIME THEY HAVE. It's not like this was funded to be a 20 minute episode for 24 episodes type of deal. Most of the random cut to new location criticisms are kind of out of place, as it sort of is explained how they end up in new locations. I don't know if you read the subtitles or not, because you clearly didn't catch the names for one of the characters and also did not understand why characters showed up. I agree that the fight scenes were repetitive, however I'm not watching this anime for stunning fights, but rather as promotional material.

I think Heroes could be a huge success in the US, if they dropped the card game aspect, I get it’s popular in Japan, but I think it could be a success if they took it’s story and applied it to Xenoverse. There’s endless fun possibilities for the Parallel quests to just be cool side missions, with the main DB H story told through cutscenes and fights. Plus it could have a huge roster for Versus. Dub the anime and game in English and I’d play the shit out of that game. I’ve had lots of fun just watching the card game’s ads, plus it would be an epic sequel to Xenoverse 2. They make this the final game abs over years just keep adding to it. It could be the ultimate Dragonball fighting game with a ton of bosses, add in characters from other things like Shallot or Fusions. It could be even cooler if they can add in where AI opponents are fought a bit, then take enough damage and they transform with a new move set. Or you can just select that form of them from the start, as well as have epic boss fights with giants like Great Apes, Luud, Hirudugarn, and others.
