Sony A7IV 1080p vs FX30 4K 100fps! NOT WHAT I THOUGHT

  • I really believed that this was going to be an easy video to make because it is pretty evident that most 4k files are objectively better than 1080p files. It's larger and more detail and information. But what I didn't consider is the quality of the 1080p 100fps file in the Sony A7IV kept up with the FX30 4k 100fps.
There are a few factors explained in the video why this is. Namely the crop factor, oversampling, noise and digital sharpness.
What are your thoughts? Do you still film in 1080p for some things?

as far as sharpness goes, the 120 1080p is a bit better in crop mode too. Still it would be nice if sony included 4k120 in the a7IV even with 3x crop.

I heard that the FX30 shoots in 4.6K when filming in 4K 60fps. Personally, I didn't see a whole lot of difference in image quality between the two ISO settings. I think there's too much whining about these issues. When you consider that actual film stock has grain that is just as noticeable as noise from digital cameras, you wonder why people complain. You can remove the chroma noise in post in seconds with DaVinci Resolve with little to no hit to your rendering times.
People seem to want quality footage without having to do any work. As someone who has worked on 40 feature films as VFX artist, I find this "issue" to be a sign of laziness and not a valid complaint at all. These kind of videos seemed destined to pop up every year any time a new camera comes out. It seems unrealistic to expect every new camera to do everything for you with little effort on your part except setting the aperture and ISO. Considering the work I've done as a visual effects artist, hearing these complaints makes me wonder why people bother. If all you want to do is spin a couple dials on your camera and call it a day, maybe filmmaking isn't in your future.

  • @GasWorksISO
    @GasWorksISO Год назад +3

My take away from comparisons of these two cameras is if you can afford it, get them both. With the two of these in your kit, there isn’t much you can’t do! I own both of them and when I’m on a shoot, if I can think of a shot I want, one of them will get it done! The FX30 has a definite film look to it and the a7iv compliments the video features perfectly. These two can do it all. My a7iv does the heavy lifting for photos, and is the B cam to the 30’s video. The FX30 does the lifting for the video side with the good variety of lenses I’ve bought for it. I run Sigma lenses for both cameras, with a couple specialty cinema lenses for some specific shots. In the future I will add another FX30 to my kit because there have been times I’ve needed 3 cameras on set.

The zebras don't turn off when you go into those lower ISOs. The clipping point gets lower because you're losing latitude in the highlights. If you set a custom zebra to lower limit, the clipping point at ISO 800 should be 99+. At ISO 400, the new clipping point is 97+, and at ISO 200, it's 93+

@@HoshiASMR I like it, still get a flat image for exposure but with all the colors so no extra saturation is needed once you get the exposure adjusted properly. That being said, I haven't tried adjusting PP11 to see if I can get the same results without adjusting exposure values.

You explained it yourself, there are two very different imaging scales between the two cameras with the same lens due to the cropfactor 1.5 sensor size + 1.6 of the APS-C-100p sensor scan. Your attempt to be fair didn't quite succeed, because at 3:52 your friend's head size was imaged about 20% larger at 4k-100-APS-C than at 1080p.
With my IPad and data rate, I see both test shots in 1080p.
At APS-C 2:08 there was more depth of field, more parts of the face between the eyeball and nose were sharp. This subjectively gives a sharper overall impression of the image, to avoid this you would have to stop down the aperture on the A7IV 1.4 x 1.5 = to 2.1 x 1.6 = 3.36 = about 3.5 and set the APS-C to 1.4 to account for the overall crop factor of 2.4, then the impression of sharpness and the S/N would be fair to evaluate at the same image size and speed, correct? Please correct me if my calculation is wrong. It would have been nice to have all shooting data like distance between object, eyes and image plane superimposed on the image. The lens has a distance scale, what is the formula for the distance setting so that when displayed full frame on the screen, your friend's videotaped face is exactly the same size at 4k-100 APS-C format-filling as it is on the A7IV in HD 1080p?
Your video is very elaborate and instructive, thanks for that. As an amateur I'm interested in the formulas, maybe you could include them in the accompanying text or as an answer?

I’m not comparing depth of field 🤦🏽‍♂️ I’m comparing resolution and quality of image

No such thing as depth of field with super 35. It’s just because you had a 24mm lens vs The compression of a 50mm
Even tho it’s super 35 the crop still doesn’t makes up for the compression.
Because a 24 mm compression is not a 50 mm compression it’s like using a APSC mode on my A7rv. The reason why I wouldn’t get shallow depth of field. It’s not because of APSC it’s because of the compression of my lens.
Conclusion you could get shallow depth of field with Apsc matching the same full frame
