From what you are saying (if I've understood your last few vids correctly) perhaps the SL8 was the dream bike you've worked your way up to, perhaps apex achievement bike, but the Giant seems to be the one that is actually the nicer one to live with. If that was me, I'd stick with the Giant and give it an overhaul + custom paint job so it lasts me a good 3+ years. What a fantastic dilemma to have though!

Only problem with selling the Giant is that its one of the best looking bikes of the last decade. In that paint, and those clean lines, beautiful frame 😘
I have a 2015 Propel Advanced Pro SL 0, which is basically the rim brake version from the previous generation, including some ZIPP 404 Firecrest rims. It cannot accommodate anything wider than a 25mm tire. It uses rim brakes that hide behind the fork and seat stays. It is stiff as hell, twitchy as hell in crosswinds, and yeah, you really do feel every bump. But like you, I LOVE IT. Ever since I started riding it, I have always felt as though the bike is saying to me, “What? Is that all you’ve got?” I am the limitations with that bike, not the other way around. Now that I am older, heavier, and more injured than I’d like to be, I wish I had a bike that was a little more comfortable, or at least could accommodate some wider, more compliant tires. But it looks like it was made to be a speed demon, and it really is.

I purchased the same frameset after watching your reviews. First bike I have ridden that the weight for me is not my main focus. As a 100kg rider the bike is perfect stiff and no flex at all. Also the lightest wheelset for me is not the best, I use a set of Parcours Strade 49 front 54 rear built custom with DT Swiss 240 Exp hubs aerolite spokes 28h front and rear with brass nipples using 28mm tyres they measure out to just under 30mm mounted. Not a light wheelset at 1600g but the ride is superb very fast stiff stable in cross winds and not harsh at all. Deep Section steel spoke wheels on the Propel is the best combination in my opinion. I ride in the UK and the roads are not great. With a 35 inch inseam the straight top tube on the propel suits me in a M/L. The equivalent SL7 / Sl8 in a size 56 has too much seatpost exposed and looks ridiculous. I also own a 2024 TCR Advanced Pro and Tarmac SL7 the Propel is my favourite bike. just built up a propel advanced sl previous ride was tarmac pro sl7. the propel is solid. in the corners superior to the sl7. better power transfer and the seat mast adds a layer of comfort/flex. i do agree my crw 50/60 are more twitchy on the crosswinds just need to put weight on the hoods LOL luv it . i would by pass the pro and go all in the sl version. i fitted my propel with exs aero over bars. full bike weight with pedals 6760 gm size medium.
I've heard conflicting stories about whether or not the ISP is stiffer than the traditional seat post of the Advanced Pro. Any insight? Like you, my forever bike (where I wouldn't care about resell value) would be the SL version. Swap out my EXS bars from my SL8 and use them for that build. Farsports EVO C6 or CRW 5060 ❤️

Can You tell somethong about cornering differenced Propel vs SL7 ? Maybe You have different tyres? Or maybe Propel have more stiffness in fork and headtube?

I have got EXS Integrated Bars for my propel SL. highly recommended! Propel is faster than my Old Tarmac Sl7 and more Comfy then Madone Gen7 (Trek most Aero lol.) 200kms one day no worries. can't wait to attempt the 300kms one day!
I‘m curious - are there shims coming with the bars so it sits flush with the overdrive steerer or does it leave some kind of void? I’m kinda concerned if it’ll damage the steerer after a while

Downsides: you’ll need to buy an extra proprietary canyon stem. Sell the DT Swiss wheels (is aero optimized for 26mm )

Although I haven’t tested anything else, god these wheels feel fast and cross wind stability is good. I’m Looking forward to buy a new pair, but can’t see the point of having two sets of wheels; given that the resell value of the dt Swiss wheels is probably not the best. Any advice ? I mean the advantage will be just 300-ish grams, going from 26 to 28mm tires (I weight 57-60kg, run tubeless and use tire pressure about 70psi)
Got the same frame and colour based on your review. Best bike I’ve ridden. Mainly from a fit perspective. Is also stiff af and is perfect for undulating terrain. It’s not slow on climbs though, fitted with proper light wheels this is, such as wheelsfar carbon spoked ones. Handling is superb and I corroborate a previous comment about excellent cornering. I have not experienced serious twitching in crosswinds with my 50mm wheels and the area I live is windy and hilly/mountainous. I do feel that indeed is an under advertised bike. Last comment, running GP5000 STR 30c, I am pretty certain it can take 32c also.
Really good point re being locked in. Would be fantastic if the bike industry truly let you demo bikes as you can do with skis (for the most part). I gambled this year on an upgrade to Specialized Roubaix S-Works and so far it is great for me. Got the prior version of SRAM Red as the discount was massive (offer I couldn’t refuse) and I think I got one of the last bikes available. Riding outside of Mt. Horeb WI is great, Horribly Hilly in June is awesome event and I assume you covered similar terrain.
I think the responsiveness and stiffness that you feel as better than the SL8 is because the Propel has 405mm chainstays and the SL8 has 410mm, plus the fact that the Propel frame is heavier (which is a good thing) than the SL8.
Propel is more responsiveness and quicker than Sl8 not only because shorter chainstays on Propel but because of lack of stiffness in bottom bracket area in Sl8
Factor Ostro VAM? I'm thinking of buying that frameset for 2025. Canyon does not offer a frameset alone option for their Aeroad. And the resell value of a Scott Foil is lousy. Thoughts?
Canyon Framesets are available only for their high-end CFR models . At least here in Europe...also, worth checking the outlet section of the canyon homepage (not sure this is available global?)

Great review! Same feeling with my Propel. It’s a blade! Unfortunately it’s not the right bike for me. It’s a great bike but it’s too stiff for my back. I have to ride it with 5 cm spacers otherwise it becomes a pain. I Will try to fit 32mm GP5000 to see if it becomes more confy. Otherwise I have to switch to a Defy. I have also an alluminium Cannondale Topstone paired with a 42mm Fulcrum racing speed carbon wheels. The bike is slow and heavy but it’s a joy to use up and down the Alps for long rides.
I would pick a bike that allows me to put at least 32mm tyres. Roads are not the same you can find in US. probably an endurance bike is perfect, ride slow, enjoy the view and enjoy the food you can find along your way!

OD does not specify the fork taper, it specifies the stem clamp diameter: OD is 1 1/8" and OD2 is 1 1/4". Same downside with Canyon, using OD2 limits stem & cockpit choices...
Some reviewers comment on how giant is so unassuming in its marketing, yet delivers innovations and excellence all around, which It could boast about but dont. I did not get the propel mainly because of the tire clearance, wanted more, and liked more the design of the bike I got.
Tarmac owners here in Chicago say Giant is boring. Go figure LoL. But when I encounter other Giant owners it's nothing but appreciation and excitement. Because we just "get it".

@@PatrickLino Tour magazin measures the compliance of the rear end. SL frames. 169 N/mm for the SL, 188 N/mm for the Advanced and 156 N/mm for the SL8. So the SL is measured to be more complient in the rear than the Advanced. Different opinions are usually coming from people with different seat post lengths.
I've avoided doing it specifically from laziness haha. Yup winter time we gon do it! I still have a couple more sets of wheels to feature before I can do the review for good.
I've been riding a propel advanced pro 0 for 12000k (was on a canyon ultimate slx rim before). I agree with a lot of the video, especially the rolling hills part. It might not be the best in Tour Magazine aero test but I've somehow beat dedicated TT bikes multiple times without pushing more watts (body position is key). One thing I would had : the ""package"" of the propel and the giant slr1 wheels is s tier. They seems fast and gets the bike to be insanely stable in all wind conditions. Every other wheel I tried fat rim width or not was twitchier and I really don't know what kind of wizardry this is. The slr1 have the same rim profile as the cadex one so I guess r&d was shared but damn. Steel spokes are making the ride not too harsh especially with 28c gp5000, 30mm measured (wouldn't be comfortable going wider as it's already close to the fork). I would say this combo is confortable enough that it isn't a problem on long rides, your legs are. Just a lovely bike. Ps : get an avian falcon II cockpit, it's identical to cadex's for a fraction of the price

@@cameronsun8161 If like me you come from 25c (standard for rim brake calipers I'd say), you just have to mount 28c tyres, which will probably measure 30mm, and you will get a smoother ride for sure.
For me, the frame comfort is very marginal against tyre size induced comfort. The Ultimate isn't a super comfortable bike either so don't worry about too much. However, the Propel is stiffer so if you go off saddle a lot it will be probably be less confortable. Depends on your rider profile.
Pat, which wheels are your favorite on this?, I own a previous version propel, and would love to upgrade it with a lighter weight wheel set, those new Farsports are pricey, but would help me drop about 455 grams, which would in turn add better acceleration response. I agree with you on the stiff ride feel, but have been able to mitigate that with my Light Bicycle AR56’s (30mm external, 23mm internal width) running Pirelli P zeros (26mm) at 63/67 psi front/rear… I weigh 200 lbs, and the lower psi helps absorb road buzz.
Would it be more comfortable with a set of 30mm tyres and say those farsports with the steel spokes than carbon? How is crosswind using those or a similar 50mm wheel?
The FarSports EVO C6 wheels I currently have on the Propel use 28c GP 5000s that stretch to 31 at the tire. Steel spokes too. The Propel doesn't like super light aero wheels at the front.
How do you find the fit? Is that a size M/L? How tall are you? I’m 181 and tossing up between a M and and M/L. Not sure if I would get a suitable enough saddle to bar drop on an M/L!
If the budget allows, Farsports is tough to beat. The wheels specs are great. Elite is falling a little behind, however their price point is more than fair. Cheaper than Farports for that reason.

I’m able to get my hands on the same frame (2024) for 1400 USD. That’s really a bargain. However, I’m wondering about the headset. From what I understand the stem has to be Giant - but how about the handlebar? Should you not be able to simply mount any 31.8mm aero bar? Have you ever tried mounting something else?
@@PatrickLino my understanding is the steerer is D shaped, so it's not standard OD2, but rather "Overdrive Aero"🫠. Deda makes a wedge that allows using a round 1-1/4" stem clamp. On the subject of tire clearance, can you quantify the clearance gap on the tire sides and top with your tires WAM? There's no clear answer out there and some speculation based on different max tires listed in different regions.
Overall the advanced is more useable as it soaks up the road buzz. The SL is best kept for racing and smooth roads! Much less comfortable but the trade off is ultra stiffness and acceleration
@@PatrickLino According to the websites all the newer frames include the mention of 32mm tire clearance. In the past it was 30mm. Either they considered that safe or did a tiny modification at the respective areas.
@@PatrickLino IMHO looking at your body proportion IMHO you will get faster by having more torque because you are not skinny. but, looking the way your pedaling motion, you are doing pedaling towards cadence, this is also 1 of pedaling technique but again IMHO this is more suitable for smaller rider. if you are bigger rider, flat terrain and you are more into criterium type of ride then longer crank will definitely give you more benefit. FYI i am not bike fit PHD. just a normal rider who changes my ride position & set up frequently.

Great review! Same feeling with my Propel. It’s a blade! Unfortunately it’s not the right bike for me. It’s a great bike but it’s too stiff for my back. I have to ride it with 5 cm spacers otherwise it becomes a pain. I Will try to fit 32mm GP5000 to see if it becomes more confy. Otherwise I have to switch to a Defy. I have also an alluminium Cannondale Topstone paired with a 42mm Fulcrum racing speed carbon wheels. The bike is slow and heavy but it’s a joy to use up and down the Alps for long rides.
What would be your perfect bike for the Alps? No expense spared.
I would pick a bike that allows me to put at least 32mm tyres. Roads are not the same you can find in US. probably an endurance bike is perfect, ride slow, enjoy the view and enjoy the food you can find along your way!

I’m also considering to buy a Crux. So I would use the Propel for fast flat rides, the AL Topstone for hard gravel and the Crux as an all road bike.

OD does not specify the fork taper, it specifies the stem clamp diameter: OD is 1 1/8" and OD2 is 1 1/4". Same downside with Canyon, using OD2 limits stem & cockpit choices...

Some reviewers comment on how giant is so unassuming in its marketing, yet delivers innovations and excellence all around, which It could boast about but dont. I did not get the propel mainly because of the tire clearance, wanted more, and liked more the design of the bike I got.
Tarmac owners here in Chicago say Giant is boring. Go figure LoL. But when I encounter other Giant owners it's nothing but appreciation and excitement. Because we just "get it".

@@PatrickLino I love my tcr , I’ve never ridden a Propel but I love the way they look. My only regret is that I bought the one with an ISP, it’s no big deal but will effect my resale valve if I ever choose to sell it. It rides nice on 28s

@@PatrickLino Tour magazin measures the compliance of the rear end. SL frames. 169 N/mm for the SL, 188 N/mm for the Advanced and 156 N/mm for the SL8. So the SL is measured to be more complient in the rear than the Advanced. Different opinions are usually coming from people with different seat post lengths.

I've been riding a propel advanced pro 0 for 12000k (was on a canyon ultimate slx rim before). I agree with a lot of the video, especially the rolling hills part. It might not be the best in Tour Magazine aero test but I've somehow beat dedicated TT bikes multiple times without pushing more watts (body position is key). One thing I would had : the ""package"" of the propel and the giant slr1 wheels is s tier. They seems fast and gets the bike to be insanely stable in all wind conditions. Every other wheel I tried fat rim width or not was twitchier and I really don't know what kind of wizardry this is. The slr1 have the same rim profile as the cadex one so I guess r&d was shared but damn. Steel spokes are making the ride not too harsh especially with 28c gp5000, 30mm measured (wouldn't be comfortable going wider as it's already close to the fork). I would say this combo is confortable enough that it isn't a problem on long rides, your legs are. Just a lovely bike.
Ps : get an avian falcon II cockpit, it's identical to cadex's for a fraction of the price

I'm coming form a rim brake ultimate too. How is the comfort on the propel. Vs the ultimate?
@@cameronsun8161 If like me you come from 25c (standard for rim brake calipers I'd say), you just have to mount 28c tyres, which will probably measure 30mm, and you will get a smoother ride for sure.
For me, the frame comfort is very marginal against tyre size induced comfort. The Ultimate isn't a super comfortable bike either so don't worry about too much. However, the Propel is stiffer so if you go off saddle a lot it will be probably be less confortable. Depends on your rider profile.
Pat, which wheels are your favorite on this?, I own a previous version propel, and would love to upgrade it with a lighter weight wheel set, those new Farsports are pricey, but would help me drop about 455 grams, which would in turn add better acceleration response. I agree with you on the stiff ride feel, but have been able to mitigate that with my Light Bicycle AR56’s (30mm external, 23mm internal width) running Pirelli P zeros (26mm) at 63/67 psi front/rear… I weigh 200 lbs, and the lower psi helps absorb road buzz.
The latest Farsports EVO C6 are my favs on the Propel. Second to my Magene EXAR 50/58 Ultra

The FarSports EVO C6 wheels I currently have on the Propel use 28c GP 5000s that stretch to 31 at the tire. Steel spokes too. The Propel doesn't like super light aero wheels at the front.

If the budget allows, Farsports is tough to beat. The wheels specs are great. Elite is falling a little behind, however their price point is more than fair. Cheaper than Farports for that reason.
Have you ever tried installing the EXS Aerover cockpit on the Giant Propel ? If so, is it safe ?

However, I’m wondering about the headset. From what I understand the stem has to be Giant - but how about the handlebar? Should you not be able to simply mount any 31.8mm aero bar? Have you ever tried mounting something else?
@@hannesstein does not have to be a Giant stem. It has to be a stem or cockpit that’s compatible with OD2 sized steer tubes.
@@PatrickLino my understanding is the steerer is D shaped, so it's not standard OD2, but rather "Overdrive Aero"🫠. Deda makes a wedge that allows using a round 1-1/4" stem clamp.
On the subject of tire clearance, can you quantify the clearance gap on the tire sides and top with your tires WAM? There's no clear answer out there and some speculation based on different max tires listed in different regions.
What size are you rolling? What's your height? Can you compare the Propel to a TCR?

TCR SL is stiff AF big difference to the advanced

Overall the advanced is more useable as it soaks up the road buzz. The SL is best kept for racing and smooth roads! Much less comfortable but the trade off is ultra stiffness and acceleration

looking the way your pedaling motion, you are doing pedaling towards cadence, this is also 1 of pedaling technique but again IMHO this is more suitable for smaller rider. if you are bigger rider, flat terrain and you are more into criterium type of ride then longer crank will definitely give you more benefit.
FYI i am not bike fit PHD. just a normal rider who changes my ride position & set up frequently.
