My grandfather used to tell me about how he hoped I would not enter the vicious cycle that he did in his 70s- you know, buying a yacht, feeling guilty and donating to a bunch of orphans, and then using the money left over to buy another yacht.
the original game had a spinner or something too, because dice had an association with gambling and supposedly that would make it more wholesome then they make a whole game based around chance, which undermines the whole thing

Perhaps they were following Milton Bradley, apparently his family was so religious growing up that they wouldn't even go to the theatre. So that explains the aversion to dice in some regard
I was in Spec Ed and every friday we got to play board games. We had this version of Life and my friend and I would play it every week. I remember getting so frustrated getting stuck in the orphan loop I started to cry and had to leave the room. Lots of good memories

one of the huge problems with earlier versions was that The Game Life was basically pure luck with only slight decision making as part of the game; it was essentially Candy Land with a bigger board and another theme when you break it down. Later versions added a lot more variety and decision making that added a significant amount of skill to the game (stills some luck, but the game was not just an advanced version of Candy Land)

Why do you think the game of life has remained so popular for so long? It seems that games like GoL and Monopoly, which are both notoriously boring to play get a bunch of spin offs and new releases and seem to sell well.
Game of Life is great for a small gathering setting as it requires little investment to play while producing some "wacky moments" that can entertain the group
I remember as a kid in the 2000s, my dad still had his 70s copy of Life. But the rulebook was missing so we just made up the rules as we went along, and didn't know about the red soace rule. So the orphan loop was never an issue.

Mind you this is really 80s Game of Life since the first half of the decade was still using the board from the 60s. Also 60s and 70s Game of Life are pretty much identical as far as rules go. The only difference is the board layout which is far more windy and disorganized in the 60s. It wasn't until 1992 that MB started fubaring everything. EDIT Oh wait there is one thing 60s has going for it. You only have to give money to the Orphans if you're childless in that version.

They go in order of when they get there, each person makes the spin seperately at the end of their turn. So if one person fails the spin and you are the only one left, you will automatically win if you go to millionaire because you're the only one with money. If for some bizarre reason you choose to go for it and miss, everyone will tie because they finish with $0.
wh..what happens if multiple people wanna roll the final thing? do they just both roll? what if the first guy gets their number immediately, does the second guy even get to try? how do they decide who rolls first?

I played this exact game twice with my family. Both times, someone rolled at the end of the game and won with that 10% chance.
