This is another one of my favorite runs that I've watched a hundred times. PJ is a legend and this run is so fun to watch and listen to. Excellent work PJ.
Two things. First, this run was really fun to watch! Second, I absolutely loved this game growing up. Beat it somehow and now absolutely love hearing about everyone's struggles. I nod knowingly.
Well you know how that old wise saying goes: "Give a gnome a fire and you warm him for a day. Light a gnome on fire and you can survive an ice cave." *Seems legit*
This game was a monster. I am one of the many that conquered Lagoon. Thanks for making the video, makes me nostalgic of my early gaming experience. It seriously took me 2 hours to find Thor's pendant, and i literally snapped when i discovered some random NPC had it.
This game looks *just* charming enough that if I had played it as a kid when it was new, I would probably have very fond memories of it. It seems a bit convoluted in figuring out where to go, but it doesn't seem *difficult*, as long as you stay leveled. Free saving anytime, consistent upgrades and simple magic usage? I feel like a kid would enjoy this and have the free time needed to figure it out.
I beat this game 20 years ago as a kid playing late at night on my snes. Also, i could not read the japanese text so i figured everything out by just trial and error and just roaming around. Took me about 6 hours.
ive played this game a bunch when i was a child i found everything killed all the bosses except for the final final boss i never could beat the final form this game is a legend for sure
I feel like this game had a good chance at being good. The music isn't bad, art isn't horrible, seems to have the mechanics of a normal game almost there. Although that might just be a fantastic runner piloting the dumpster for all I know.
Actually, the song that plays during the very final boss fight as well as in the intro cinematic, called Moonchild, is honestly one of my favorite pieces of music on the SNES.
I actually enjoy this game. Yes it has flaws, some of them rather glaring, but it's a decently fun little game with a fairly rockin' soundtrack. If the controls were a bit better, the sword a little longer, the plot a bit clearer and the way forward a bit less aggravating, I think it could have really developed a following.
I'm with you, I enjoyed this game as a child, and later on when I replayed it in my early 20's. The sword being short I like, adds a lot of difficulty to the game.
I tried playing this game back when it came out. I spent maybe a couple hours wandering around the town, exploring, and failed to find my way out of it. I returned the game to my friend and let him know my distaste for it.
I enjoyed watching this run a lot. I would never play this game myself and actually I never heard about it before, definitely not intending to play it now.
Is nobody going to say how Thor looks alot like David Bowie from Labyrinth, he even turns into a white owl thingy at the end... Love both game and movie
My Brother loved this game when he was young and defended it like it was his child. Meanwhile I was playing FF4 and 6 on, and Crono Trigger and laughing at him.
Say what you will about this game, but I absolutely *love* the music. Outside of many FF games and SO2, Kemco games have some of my favorite music in them. I say this having both played and beaten both this game and Drakkhen.
Honestly, this game isnt that bad. If there was a remake of this game with decent mechanics and nice gameplay I would play. The story is simple, but from what I saw seems fun.
I just hope when summer games 2018 comes up, they speed run this game, with all the talk about short swords, and instantly follow it with the sega genesis "Strider", and talk about how awesome the sword reach is.... maybe even make that a theme.... "Contrast Games Block" where the games have differences that are blatantly obvious.
I'll never understand how you all can't see ALL OF THAT MUD. It's all over the screen, that's why the graphics are sub-par! It was a mistranslation, you see. :P
When he's fighting the boss at around 1:14:00 if you get the blue ring (I believe that's a thing?) you can jump over and hit the gems and clip through the gems going forward, making the battle last about 10 seconds. I know this because my friends brother has this game and that's how he was able to beat that boss.
They covered most of the bullshit but to summarize: 1. Your only weapon is a sword the size of a toothpick. No matter how much you upgrade its damage its range never changes. 2. To make matters worse, the screen doesn't scroll unless you're 85% across the screen, giving you no reaction time. Imagine playing Contra like that. 3. This guy knows where he's going but if you don't all the dungeons are huge multifloor mazes with respawning enemies. 4. Yes your health regenerates but not in Boss Fights which are stupid hard. I played this game as a kid. It has one saving grace (Hah!): You can save ANYWHERE. Even in the middle of a fight (but not bosses). I raged quit when I saved right before getting comboed to death that killed me instantly everytime I reloaded. Out of spite I rented it again later only to get hopelessly lost inside one of the dungeons and gave up for good. Fuck this game.
+Nr2reaper Coincidentally, the original Sharp X68000 version of Lagoon DID have "bump combat" like the Ys games. Swinging the butter knife was added for the SNES version.
I still watch pj's runs every once in a while. I hope he does more soon. The guy is hilarious. One of the best gdq runners IMO.
I love how excited puwexil is when PJ defeats ella, we all need a friend that supportive lol
This is another one of my favorite runs that I've watched a hundred times. PJ is a legend and this run is so fun to watch and listen to. Excellent work PJ.
This run is an absolute _blast_ to watch, it's chock-full of hilarious moments and I never get tired of it.
Two things. First, this run was really fun to watch! Second, I absolutely loved this game growing up. Beat it somehow and now absolutely love hearing about everyone's struggles. I nod knowingly.
No idea why but I loved this game as a kid.
Same. Loved this game as a kid (still list it and Drakkhen among my favorite soundtracks from the SNES)
Every PJ run at GDQ is required watching
Fucking Mecha Richer and Pj are legends, they make stuff funny without trying and thats when humor is the best.
This is my favorite speedrun of all time! 10/10
44:30: "Have you tried paper?"
Man after my own heart.
I come back to this video a couple of times a year, such a great speedrun to listen to.
PJ is my favorite runner. Informative, funny, and dedicated.
PJ is one of my favourite runners due to the combo him + his luck + his awful games. Never change, PJ
Well you know how that old wise saying goes: "Give a gnome a fire and you warm him for a day. Light a gnome on fire and you can survive an ice cave."
*Seems legit*
"Make a man a fire and keep him warm for an evening. Set a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life."
PJ and Klaige are my favorite runners, they have outstanding chemistry and commentary.
I like PJ and Mecharichter as a duo.
@@emeyerls12 Team PLC are all great for comentary and chemistry
All fire is truth fire.
This game was a monster. I am one of the many that conquered Lagoon. Thanks for making the video, makes me nostalgic of my early gaming experience. It seriously took me 2 hours to find Thor's pendant, and i literally snapped when i discovered some random NPC had it.
My first thought was "Well, that's a pretty decent looking NES game."
"Limitations of the SNES hardware" - 9:35
... O-Oh.
@@AwesomeHairo I got a batch of 3 snes games when I got a snes.... this was one of them. I loved it for some reason.
PJ and Puwexil, two legends
I love PJ's runs.
I’ve been re-watching this speedrun for years and finally I understand the joke at 44:23
I completely unironically love the soundtrack to this game.
I didn't grow up with it, but watching PJ's GDQ runs definitely sparks some nostalgia :D
I love this game. It was a great part of my childhood, and they treated the plot perfectly.
I love PJ, he can make even an awful game fun to watch.
This game isn't that bad
THIS! This is one of the best runs I've ever seen. Top 10
Starts at 8:25
OMFG THATS WHERE THE MOON BLADE IS!
BRB I've got to go and finally put my Lagoon-induced childhood PTSD to rest.
I knew there was something special about the light, so i tried every item, with suppose 8 second load of going back and forth, it took forever.
So did you manage it?
Wow PJ!! Well done mate. This was very entertaining and hilarious. Thanks for a great run!!
PJ my favorite runner, funny and skilled.
Never heard of this game, but glad I watched this run. I'm loving the music!
remember playing this game when I was little , so much memories
All runs by PJ are great(:
I didn't realize PJ did this game again! I LOVED it in 2012 and I already love this even more! PJ, you made my day. ;w;
WAITAMINUTE
pigfish99
as soon as i saw puwexil, i knew id have all my questions answered hahah. great run!
This run is still one of my favorites
Games like this should be remade. It has a lot of potential.
PJ is so great, I like him so much. His runs are always so entertaining.
Lol I love Pj, such a hell of a fun guy. =) fav speedrunner by far
Back to my comfort video when I'm high, always a good one
PJ is da man. Love his appearances on the *gdqs. When it's him or dram51 i always make time.
I very much did as a kid.
yeah, I played this game as a kid, I was maybe 5-6 years old back then. Nice memories, one of my fav games
Love the music in this game. Cozy run.
I watch this run all the time!!! One of agdq or just gdq's best runs of all time!!!
I beat this game 20 years ago as a kid playing late at night on my snes. Also, i could not read the japanese text so i figured everything out by just trial and error and just roaming around. Took me about 6 hours.
I still think this is my all-time favorite run.
This should be shared with everyone who worked on the game, I think they'd get a kick out of it!
this run is so fun and chilled and funny i rewatch it so often XD
One of the best Speedruns :)
Time for the roughly yearly watch!
This is my favorite run next to the Brain Age: TASBot run!
Loved this game.
Great run and great commentary!
Wow. This game is the SNES equivalent of a 12 year old's RPG Maker project.
Yikes. That's really insulting, y'know... to the twelve year old, I mean.
Wtf... Is that Ray? Brownman himself in the front row? Swear to god.
I loved this game as a kid yea it's terrible but it has a special place in my heart
Lol, I love how they just make fun of the game the entire time lol. Made me laugh.
1:16:45 now that is a crazy random boss... damn what a finish.
When you go to watch a random GDQ speedrun and Ray (aka Brownman) is just chillin in the crowd lol
ive played this game a bunch when i was a child i found everything killed all the bosses except for the final final boss i never could beat the final form this game is a legend for sure
I legitimately enjoy this game as a kid. It has a bunch of faults but I really liked it, but it IS brutally hard.
I feel like this game had a good chance at being good. The music isn't bad, art isn't horrible, seems to have the mechanics of a normal game almost there. Although that might just be a fantastic runner piloting the dumpster for all I know.
I knew I recognized Ray just sitting there at the front of the audience lol
“Despite having ONE THOUSAND YEARS of advanced warning . . . “
“If you can get in, use this book . . . “
“I’m glad I’m alive . . . “
Just a few of many wonderful moments
Music isn't too bad, though. At least that's something :)
Actually, the song that plays during the very final boss fight as well as in the intro cinematic, called Moonchild, is honestly one of my favorite pieces of music on the SNES.
My bad, I meant that plays during the Owl-Thor fight. It's the same as the intro song and it's pretty rockin'
+Browsignal I know it plays during one of the fights in that final gauntlet.
this game did have good music for its time
I trust a bass clef to know about music.
Thor (in Lagoon in SNES) is one of only a small number of video game characters with heterochromia (different colored eyes ... fascinating)
42:03 bionic commando rearmed 2 donation from the dev. Hype mode AAAAAAAAAAAAAA
the worst thing about this is that i see the skeleton of a good game here
PJ running lagoon with puwexil and klaige on the couch. Perfection
Everyone shits on the graphics on this game, but they were quite decent for 1991. Source: was 9 years old when I played this
I actually enjoy this game. Yes it has flaws, some of them rather glaring, but it's a decently fun little game with a fairly rockin' soundtrack. If the controls were a bit better, the sword a little longer, the plot a bit clearer and the way forward a bit less aggravating, I think it could have really developed a following.
If the game was good, is what you mean.
I returned the game to my friend and let him know my distaste for it.
yo, idk why, but so far this is my favorite bgdq, or well... gdq game in general, I'm back here so often
"How did anyone finish this game as a child?"
With extreme difficulty.
Honestly had loads of fun with this game. Great speed run and making it look easy, spoiler it's not.
I always saw this game at the rental store, but the box art never intrigued me enough to pick it up.
Lol i remember those days, literally trying to judge a game by its cover/back art and screenshots.
I enjoyed watching this run a lot. I would never play this game myself and actually I never heard about it before, definitely not intending to play it now.
Is nobody going to say how Thor looks alot like David Bowie from Labyrinth, he even turns into a white owl thingy at the end... Love both game and movie
This was one of my favorite games as a child. I swear I'm not a masochist.

Oh my god I didn't know anyone else even knew about this game. I played this when I was a kid, I couldn't ever make it past the first dungeon.
Why? Just level grind a little. You should try to play through it on an emulator I guarantee you it won't be as difficult as you remember it being.
"It's a big pile of anime" - Sums up the entire game basically
I just hope when summer games 2018 comes up, they speed run this game, with all the talk about short swords, and instantly follow it with the sega genesis "Strider", and talk about how awesome the sword reach is.... maybe even make that a theme.... Oh hey look! Its the famous Roy from Trophy Finders! Sitting front row! That devilish guy!
31:21 The “muddy water” thing must've been decided at the last second because...this doesn't look muddy!
I'll never understand how you all can't see ALL OF THAT MUD.
It's all over the screen, that's why the graphics are sub-par!
It was a mistranslation, you see. :P
I wish this game would come out on the Wii U Virtual Console.
Just noticed Achievements Hunter Ray in the front row! Makes sense he's into speedrunning too 😋
Ah I see a wild brown man :) him talking about speed runs when he was part of achievement hunters got me into watching these things
I can confirm 1:13:54 boss is extra fun on low percent. Took many many attempts to defeat when I was at my friends house.
When he's fighting the boss at around 1:14:00 if you get the blue ring (I believe that's a thing?) you can jump over and hit the gems and clip through the gems going forward, making the battle last about 10 seconds.

1:22:20 for the attempt that shall not be repeated.
Is that Ray?
I'm almost certain that it is. I don't know who else it could be.
43:00 cuddle time is best time
This looks like a bootleg version of Ys I&II.
+Nr2reaper Coincidentally, the original Sharp X68000 version of Lagoon DID have "bump combat" like the Ys games. Swinging the butter knife was added for the SNES version.
@@Nr2reaper the game wasn't made for the sword combat
This game keeps showing up in recommendation probably because I search Lagoon comp TFT recently
When I was a kid I thought the movable mantle icon was a big brown claw
"If you can get in, use this book," is plainly referring to the book he gives you two text boxes ago, but it's still funny.
...even so... I kind of want to play this monstrosity
I would love to see Lunar Silver Star Story Complete run at GDQ.
