    You know, now you have several different 3D printers and a CNC machine that can perhaps even do thin aluminium. I'm thinking that you can probably create some custom PC cases specially ITX cases and such, I'd love to see that

    I actually just got an X-Carve 2 weeks ago and i wish this video was up when I was building it. I do have some advice for those who are getting one and building it, do NOT use a drill on the self tapping screws, they are painful to put in but I nearly stripped the screw while using the drill, just put the screws in and tap them before trying to attach the beams to anything else, makes it a lot easier. I also ended up using a nerf dart to feed the wires through as well as a wire nut, made it very easy. The terminal blocks and wiring for the limit switches sucked and actually had to solder the wired directly to the pins on the arduino. Also make sure you turn the power up on all of the stepper motors to about half if you have the NEMA 23 motors. I also took all of the ground wires and soldered them to an extra piece of hookup wire and screwed that in the terminal block. I agree with barnacules, Radioshack would have been amazing to go to. I highly recommend the upgraded spindle and the collet adapter but it is loud to the point where i have to wear protection to be near it when the shop vac is running too. Huge note for the X-carve: it does not come with extra screws or nuts for some reason, i suggest you order a few extra screws just in case. The wasteboard is expensive but it is worth it, a convenience tax if you will. I think that's everything, I recommend having a jig saw and some sort of sander and files as well. Keep up the good videos Barnacules, can't wait to see more videos using the cnc!

    I was just getting back into coding and computer setups, when i found some of your videos and saw the 3d printer ones and then this one today.. I like seeing what it takes to actually build the cnc machine(it looks like a lot of work, but I enjoy being able to build my tools or other things).....Really enjoy your videos that show that a nerd can actually do more than just fix your computer....

      +Matthew Magee I think you've actually convinced me to buy this. I've wanted a CNC machine for awhile, and i've built a couple of 3D printers before so I don't think this would be too complicated to build. Any more builds like this in the works?

    Hey Jerry, in case you didn't know they make attachments for a dust boot and a clamp that will hold the vacuum so your not sucking the dust up manually. The dust boot will make a big difference over time keeping the area where the X-carve is clean.

    Screw a board on top of the waist material it came with, get decent quality stuff then use the router to machine it down. Then use 4 or more screws to hold your material down. You can also try putting tabs on it so it won't hit the router bit. Good luck on your CNC endeavors!

    For the joint ground, I usually grab a spare pice of wire and solder the ends to it for a cleaner look. A little shrink tube or electrical tape and bam. I use to bug cars for electrical testing at the local Jr. college. By far the most fun I've ever had working.

    • @kuhrd
      @kuhrd 8 лет назад

      +Dustin Penner Yeah the assembly takes a while but it is a lot of fun. I put mine together in a single afternoon and evening. The hardest part for me was that I bought only the kit I needed so I had to make my own waste board and I also supplied all my own electronics and wiring so my x-carve has much larger stepper motors and is running with Mach3 and a parallel port controller. Eventually I will buy a smooth-stepper for it. Also plan to design and have made, a laser cut 1/2" thick steel table for it. Then it should be ready for even harder materials. I kinda wish Inventables had beefed up the design a bit more in some areas as I can see some parts being more prone to failure when being used heavily. For light duty tasks it seems good though.
