EXTMIX #26: SOME SNES PROG

- Опубликовано: 4 июл 2024
- Today, we’re looking at SOME PROG, in its various forms, as it appeared on the SNES. Last time was filled with odd time signatures, but prog can mean more than that. Let’s take a listen!

Good to see some love for Tim Follin's work on Spider-Man and the X-Men in here. I listen to that soundtrack quite often, and Cyclops' and Storm's stages are two of my favorite tracks from that game
Is there a bigger disproportion between quality of the game and quality of the music than the SNES version of Arcade' Revenge? To be extra clear, I think it's one of the best soundtracks on the SNES.
iirc wasn't it mainly geoff that worked on spiderman/xmen. i think this song in particular is tim though. I could be confusing this with another game though.
@@jakemauer6200Maybe Happy Hippo on GBC.
Or Otto Ottifanten Baby's Bruno Nightmare on GB.
I've been playing SFV and I feel so validated for thinking Sagat's theme was in a strange time signature. I think it's actually been normalized somewhat for SFV but you can still hear that original rhythm being cut short.
Dude, this mix is immaculate. Stumbling on quality like this on an under viewed channel is an injustice. I know it has pretty niche appeal but still.
Impeccable song transitions as always.
Never clicked on a vid so quickly! 😂
Lovin these 🎶
Great mix
YES NEW GST MIX UPLOAD
Awesome work! The most proggy track on SNES is Akrillic.
Super cool, thanks! Needs more Plok! ;)
Really enjoyed the theory in this one!
Pretty sweet mix right there.
Love it 😍
Great video as always, I still cant fully understand prog, but I like your videos about it, it helps to internalize polyrithms and odd time signatures
I remember suggesting Spindizzy Worlds Level 8 on this channel years ago, so I'm glad to see it finally included. It's an oddball because every other song in the game is very plainly 4/4 even though the puzzle-style gameplay would have been well suited to mind bending polyrhythms the whole way through.
There's actually a pretty nice variety of timesigs in that game! I had several Spindizzy songs on my shortlist. Level 8 isn't even the dizziest tune :P
Fun to see suggestions being fulfilled years later though! Someone suggested Troddlers too but I can't find that comment anymore...
@@GSTChannelVEVO You’re right. Now that I look through the OST again, there are plenty of unusual things going on (what is even going on in Level Music 5 lol). Even the songs that are still in 4/4 make some efforts to disguise it.
GASP you mentioned Hatfield & the North, one of my fav bands of all time!!!! 🎶
Yoooo, more prog!
I somehow perfectly missed this
As a prog rock and VGM fan one thing I'd love to have seen is influence from "heavy prog" and prog metal bands like Rush, Queensryche, Dream Theater, et cetera. I love this stuff though.
I don't think much SNES music was directly influenced by the likes of DT or Rush. I more often hear something resembling ELP, Yes or Genesis.
@@maldivirdragonwitch That's exactly right; I was just wishing more inspiration came from heavier prog bands. There was a track off Plok which sounded a lot like Rush's "Xanadu".
missed opportunity to add something from plok
great mix noetheless
Do you have any favorite progressive bands? I really enjoy King Crimson, Genesis, and Gentle Giant.
A lot of my favs are far more recent, and may not even qualify. Alan Holdsworth is the first to mind.
Panzerballett is closer rock. Yugen holds the distinction of making one of my all-time favorite songs ever, but is arguably more "avant" than "prog".
Thinking Plague is probably the most traditionally prog rock fav of mine, perhaps?
Gonna list out a few big favs: miRthkon, Mats & Morgan, Koenjihyakkei.
I do also like King Crimson, but more for "Larks Tongues In Aspic" than anything else :P
@@GSTChannelVEVO I've been meaning to listen to Holdsworth's solo material for a long time. I enjoy his playing in U.K. a lot - and fun fact, he helped teach Jakko Jakszyk how to play guitar.
I'm not familiar with any of your other picks! Are some of them in the more prog metal arena?
@@KirbysAdventureMusic Atavachron (the entire album) is my favorite thing Holdsworth has done. highly recommended, especially if you like U.K. already!
funny to see the connections sometimes ;)
As for the bands I listed being more prog metal: Panzerballett, yes. The others, I'd argue...probably not? maybe?
I guess it wouldn't be very "prog" if they could be straightforwardedly categorized huh
The Sagat Stage track from Street Fighter Alpha 2 sound really this way on SNES? I tried to find it, but was soo different...
It does, about 1 minute into the original. In this mix, the drums from the previous song are still playing though...
@@GSTChannelVEVO Thank you for the reply. I took the time to check the theme a little longer now.
Great channel and video!
I knew that there's going to be one Follin track here, but why Cyclops? Why not Wolverine or Gambit, or even Akrilic?
Also, I suppose compared to the tracks here, Radical Dreamers' Gale isn't weird enough, huh?
mostly because that's what fit with my flow! I was particularly eager to fit Akrilic in here but, alas, I found myself in a completely different tempo and mood.
Gale would have fit quite nicely if I had focused more on combative music, perhaps next to Secret of Mana's "Danger" (another fav of mine)
Good mix, but I feel tricked due to the lack of mellotron, minimoog, or eclectic instrumentation on these tracks
damn you got me 😔
though more seriously, you have me wracking my brain trying to think of examples of mellotron on SNES. that's such a meta concept, right? I can't think of any games that had it though...
@@GSTChannelVEVO The many string samples found across games essentially function the same way as mellotron and have a similar appeal, I feel. Difference is that they can sustain for longer than 8 seconds!
O dankesehr
