- You know that really cool unique style that 16 bit soundtracks tend to have? Turns out this is actually called jazz fusion. A lot of Japanese composers drew influence from the genre, both for the game music and the occasional arrangement album. It’s a great sound, and that’s what we’re exploring today!

I love the unabashed cheesiness of Japanese fusion music so this was an especially enjoyable mix. Amazing transitions and interesting facts as always too!
Crazy that casiopea and t square played them!!! I love those two bands
Brain Lord! I'm crazy about that game's soundtrack.
Great video as always. :)
As a non-musicy person it's always intrigued me as to what this "game sound" was. Thanks for enlightening me!
Yes, more Jazz Fusion coverage! And thank you for mentioning the Mega Man X arrangement album. Although I too went into it expecting some heavy rock, I was actually quite pleased with their unique take of the song and it's a solid jam.
Please, make more. Your videos are really good for my studies in tecnology.
Great selections 👏👏
Your videos are among the highest of highlights on this platform. Always a pleasure to see a new upload and excellent choice of subject.
hell yess, giving brainlord some props, love it, btw all the seamless mixing of these tracks is brilliant
I KNEW Light Plane was gonna be in here just by the title alone. What an absolute jam.
Thank you for the video, GST Channel!
Excellent mix as always, thank you! Off to listening to the Rockman X Arrange album now...
As someone who grew up on these same influences (look up the history of the radio station The Wave), I appreciate you focusing on this.
Very nice mix to relax after work to.
Incredible mixes, whoa.
Makes me happy. Thanks for sharing
Sounds like Omega Tribe or Shakatak. Amazing. Thanks for video.
I was really surprised to see brain lord here. Great mix!
Nice work as usual :)
I love the jazz arrangements of the F-Zero soundtrack. Good stuff!
Glad you included ISS Deluxe this time. This game has a 'secret port' for the PSX with rearranged tracks but I believe not every track was remade.
5:14 "Europe" & 5:31 "Further Challenges" sound like they came straight from Sonic the Hedgehog! Amazing tracks.
I'm going to have to check out those Mega Man X and F-Zero albums. I loved what I heard in the mix!
The last mix was my favorite, but you truly knocked it out of the park with this one. Absolutely wonderful selection.
Man, your transitions are always so smooth
great video, thanks a lot !
Dang, didn't know that Taku Iwasaki did some game soundtracks. I'm mainly aware of his anime work, which are some of my all-time favourite OSTs.
This mix fucking rocks
grooovy.

Great video, but to say T-Square is one of the biggest names in fusion isn't quiiite so, maybe in Japan where of course fusion and city pop were huge and great. But the core sound and indeed the biggest names of fusion, come from USA! Japan's adoption of American jazz and and rock styles added to the amazing amalgamation, or fusion, we have today, but influences in that regard are worldwide, for sure a lot of Polynesian influences (that beachy, "Hawaiian" sound). I guess when synths started taking off in the 70s/80s and composers had sounds from around the world all available in little boxes, and with advances in recording technology (digital age etc.,) people around the world all felt more inclined to try play with new sounds and styles. As long as we aren't saying jazz fusion is a Japanese thing!
I'd argue that the "vgm flavor" of jazz fusion is a Japanese thing, but the US side of the genre is admittedly a bit of a blind spot for me.
I perceived the US (and UK) stuff as an extension of prog rock, vs Japan where it seems to be more of an evolution of [city] pop.
that perception was built by noticing patterns in the stuff I listen to, moreso than reading about the history of it all, so I'm happy to defer to someone with deeper knowledge.
Is there a way to get an hour mix of all this? Thank you for doing the hard work and digging these up!
Megaman X tune is a good example of how fun jazz fusion can be in chiptune form vs the real thing which can sound obnoxious.
When this genre is pushed into an extreme level of cheese like Redbook midi I can start to appreciate it on that level again for the pure elevator muzak-ness.
what is redbook midi?
@@suckmymonkey4315 redbook audio. Pardon. I only talk out my arse 75% of the time but listening to whatever that second tune was there threw me off cos it was like CD audio quality tunage that wasn't live instrumental recording.
