    Remove babies and put them in a bare bottom tank with sponge filter. Feed newly hatch brine shrimp. Don't over feed at one sitting. Feed that two to three times a day. Then a week or two later add crushed up flake along with the brine. And watch them grow!

      Yeah I winced when he said he fed his fry once a day.... I have endlers and dalmatian mollies. I'm moving up to acaras now that I have a bigger tank. I would like to breed a pair a few times and eventually I'd like a tank with only males

      You have to feed them newly hatched brine shrimp in the beginning, otherwise they will die. Not the fault of the parents!

  • @kylekll
    @kylekll 10 лет назад +11

    I've breed and raised many types of cichlids in the past, including master piece flowerhorns. Once the eggs hatch switch to a sponge filter only. Don't pull out the fry, pull out the parents once the fry swimming on their own. 2 days after they become free swimming you can try feeding them egg yolk of a hard boiled egg. Just a tiny pinch of egg yolk at first a few times a day until you can see them eating it regularly. You can tell they're eating and full when their belly is yellow-tan - full of egg yolk. Then you can increase the feedings and quantity. That'll get them past the fry stage. After that you can use powder food or crushed flake food. Good luck!

      Kyle L Thanks Kyle -- Great sounding advice and very doable. Now I need to get the pair to pried in their new aquarium. I've been feeding them a lot and doing water changes. Any other advice?

    • @kylekll

      Since they haven't spawned yet, take the opportunity to remove the gravel. You can leave in the larger decorative pieces. The purpose it to make it easier on yourself to provide a clean environment for the fry. Gravel traps waste and is difficult and time consuming to clean.
      Water changes, raising and lowering the temperature will help to induce breeding however letting them take their own time will yield a relatively larger batch of eggs. Just providing protean rich diet.

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  9 лет назад

      Kyle -- they are not breeding -- still doing lots of water changes. Switching the diet over to PE Mysis. Let's see if that works.

    • @kylekll
      @kylekll 9 лет назад +3

      PE Mysis is a good choice. You can also try frozen blood worms or black worms.
      Here are a few tips
      1. Check your water parameters. Is ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, hardness, ph all within range? if not, adjust accordingly.
      2. Check the temperature. You can drop it down to 74 degrees for a few days then bump it up to 84 degrees for a few days. then set it back to the normal temp of ~78-80.
      3. Are they swimming together and cleaning/preparing a nesting area? if yes, that's good. if no, try arranging the decor so that everything is in one of the back corners.
      4. When you do your water changes do they swim around freely or do they hide? if they hide then reduce the frequency of the water changes.
      5. Have patience
      6. If you don't have patience - put in a divider with the pair on one side and a new similar looking fish on the other side. a new fish in their territory will strengthen their bond and hopefully kick in their instinct to procreate.
      7. As a last resort, you can separate the pair for a few day. Just remember to change up the decor right before reuniting them. Warning: There's a chance they will fight when reunited.
      8. Just enjoy them as they are. :)

    • @fincasters
      @fincasters  9 лет назад +1

      Kyle L Kyle -- Great advice. Thanks. In order to do a new Fincast -- I've moved the whole group of EBA into the 29 with the pair. I can a;ready see the increased bonding -- so who knows? Like I said originally any breeding that's ever happened in my aquariums has been by chance and I lake the patience and you mention above. I'll keep working on this. Good info for all of the viewers of Fincasters!

    I always pull my fry out as soon as they are free swimming. Then I place them in a barebottom sponge filter tank with a arrangement of hides. Seems like in most cases the parents slowly pick off the young. So I recommend taking 2/3rds of the fry away from them, leaving some for them to defend

  • @nielsvanderberg2398
    @nielsvanderberg2398 8 лет назад +6

    With my regular blue acara's I scooped out the fry after their third day wiggling and placed them in a high walled aquarium riddled with snails (and more importantly their eggs) A small filter high up in a corner to prevent sucking the fry up and the abundance of tiny snails and eggs did the feeding for me. They grew very fast on that diet.

    I have successfully raised 2 sets of fry twice with both parents in a 29 gallon around 3 months ago. I had this tank next to my bed so that I could keep a close eye on it. The male would start eatin the fry from the first spawn. It seemed to me like he was trying to make the female spawn again by doing so. My pair has proving to spawn every 16 days. I split them up after the 5th spawn to sell off some of the fry. I feed the fry frozen brine shrimp and cichlid flakes that I chopped up with a razor blade.

    I have electric blue acaras as well. I raised two batches of fries so far and its going well. You have to seperate the fries totally from the male and female, take the fry our and put them in a seperate tank. I only did this once the fry was one week old.

    I have been extremely successful at breeding angelfish I have tried all sorts of foods and by far the best results were yeilded from newly hatched baby brine shrimp, it's nutritional value is amazing, you'll get very quick growth from your fry because it triggers their instinct to feed and is very high in protein

    Seperate the the breeding pair for the young as soon as they are free swimmers. Make sure the water quality is good and the I let’s to the filters are covered with a foam sponge if your using a hang on the back or a canister filter. Feed the fry fresh hatched brineshrimp for the first two to three weeks then move them over to powered flakes. I hope this helps....

    I had my electric blue acaras breed and I put the eggs in a separate tank , I initially had a air stone and a filter running in the small 5 gallon tank. After the started moving around, I noticed that they were getting sucked in by the filter. I then turned off the filter completely and just left the air stone and begin to do small water changes from my bigger 75 gallon tank every week. I personally mix between dried brain shrimp and smashed flakes when feeding. So far I am noticing steady and healthy growth of the fry and none are disappearing/dying. (I am not an expert and this is just my first patch or fry, although my breeding pair had laid eggs again which surprised me, only 2 weeks duration between the two patches). Good luck

    Make sure you have a sponge filter (stops babies getting sucked up) and change the water at least twice a week. This worked with our Blue Acara. You may need to remove the fry and put them into a small tank (5 gallon) this way the babies will be able to find the food.

    Rummynose tetra stay in the bottom of the tank, not a good tetra to keep with them, especially when the acara gets bigger, I keep blood fin tetras, bigger size, as they stay on top as a school, or bigger tetra species

    Electric blue acara they say is peaceful but some is likely to eat small moving fish. They are very heavy when it comes to feeding to be aware of keeping small and slow moving fish because they will eat them. If you're new to fish keeping I would just keep a male and female for these types of fish.

  • @HybridHerps
    @HybridHerps 10 лет назад

    I'd have removed the male as well, raise the babies by themselves. People have been getting fry from EBA breedings, but I am wondering how healthy the offspring are. Perhaps its like EBJD where you can't breed two EBJD together and you need to breed them to a normal one, then breed back to an EBJD or breed the normal looking het. EB's together.
    The EBA is a relatively new mutation on the market so there's not a lot to go on in terms of care.
    I will say this, I do have one EBA in my 75 with the rest of my cichlids. Its also a high tech planted tank, everything grows fine (I just have some algae issues due too some issues with the setup and equipment of the tank though that I'll be battling forever or at least until I move everything into a different tank and start fresh, but the fish don't bug the plants).
    They are aggressive for the size, and more outgoing than other fish from what I've seen. Still a nice fish though, not sure what their max size is since the exact species that the EBA comes from is not 100% known, and even if it was it could be like the EBJD in that EBJD will generally stay smaller than regular JD's and act differently as well.

    Electric Blue Dempseys and Acaras are not "real" mother nature fish. Same with Flower Horns and Blood Parrot Cichlids. They are just plain hard to breed. Possibly because mother nature didn't give the parents or the fry instincts. Man did. With the cichlids I bred, I always removed the parents as soon as the fry started leaving the nest. The females often times guard the nest a little closer and spit the babies back into the nest. When she can't keep up anymore. Tehn I'd remove the parents. The only food gave the fry was ground up flakes like good ol tetramin. I would stir up gravel away from the fry because they seem to eat the gunk that gets stirred up. This has worked for Convicts, jewel cichlids, port acaras, firemouths, jack dempseys and a dull colored cichlid called a "Chanchito". I think green terrors would work this way too because they are closely related to Port Acaras.

    Hello,
    I had the same problem with my electric blue acaras: after spawning the male did chase away the female nearly to death, even neglecting the eggs, just to chase away the female.the result was the eggs been eaten away by other fish.
    on the second spawn, i just did take away the eggs (on a small stone) and raised them exacly like the angelfish eggs.
    everything went perfect, they are easy to raise.
    just one thought: is the beaviour of normal blue acaras the same?
    I thought I just had a bad temper male, but after your story, I see that yours also had that female chasing temper....
    now The female is dead,( too beaten after the chase) but I have about 50 adolecents that will spawn soon, I am curious to see if the caracter will pass on , or if I can find some good husbands...
    Warm regards, and thanks for sharing your video

    An advice for what it's Worth... You mention you'll try remove the fry to save it next time but you should consider leaving them in the water and environment they're born in for them to grow and instead remove the parents... Also use so fine mosquito non metalic mesh for filter intake to prevent the brood to disapear being sucked up... Thank for the video (I must admit I laughed a lot when I saw the "before" and "after" your rummynoses and plant. Who again advised you to mix them both ? But the acaras grew nice...

I think they pleco's are getting them, the Eel don't care she only likes night crawlers.

After several unsuccessful results, I began to remove the eggs and put them into a large jar, which the idea is from ruclips.net/video/p_nnF-bcE7c/видео.html. I ordered some sponge filter from the vendor when I saw this awesome rearing technique but didn't use the bottom jar sponge filter because my fry were getting stuck in the crevices. Instead, I put on a small tube pre-filter sponge at the end of the tube and suspended it in the jar. No more dead fry being caught in the crevices. You can see in one of my videos where I have the jar in a 10 gallon tank with an older batch of fry growing up. This way, when I feed my smaller fry baby brine shrimp, any that don't get eaten will be sucked up into the tube filter and out into the water column. At that point, the older fry will have their opportunity to clean up any uneaten baby brine shrimp. I also keep a mystery snail in the jar to eat up any babies that do eventually die, which allows me to not have to maintain dead fry from rotting and molding. Video of my implementation from the video above: ruclips.net/video/IqN0rZh_ozA/видео.html

    After a week tak both parents out and feed the fry spiralina flakes and mysys shrimp. They will grow quickly if you have them in a decent size tank, Acara aren't great parents like convicts and honduran red point cichlids

      Completely agree, the acaras defend their young well but do end up eating them. I've had good luck though feeding my fry crushed boiled egg yolk as they recognized it quickly after they finished eating their yolk sacks from when they hatched. Also my Acara fry like to dig themselves under the gravel and sometimes get trapped under it so a tank with no gravel might be something worth trying.

      Even red eye tetras?
      They grow to about 3 inches in size.. is a blue acara's mouth bigger than 3 inch?
      I am talking about keeping a single blue acara, not multiples.

    When they breed again change your filter to a sponge filter they are probably being sucked into the filter

      Hi Charlie -- I agree -- I witnessed some of that -- so I have changed the filter situation around in their new 29 gallon aquarium. Now of course, they have decided to stop breeding! Doing lots of water inches and feeding heavily. Any other advice?

      When i do water changes i use cooler water and have the heaters set at a warmer temp the change usually will bring on breeding

    Any fish not the same size gets eaten. Even with Cichlids of Africa or South America. Convicts will beat up smaller species. Nature can be cruel.

    The breeding maturity and fry made them more aggressive. They should have removed (one or the other). Rookie move, Mr. News Caster. 👎
