I watched one of your videos where someone changed a valve cover gasket for a client and client came back to you with leaks because they didn’t put weather seal. I had done the same thing on my vehicle few days prior following another video and even knew it was the middle gasket leaking (of the four on my 2010 Ford Focus). I redid mine with your suggested seal, and voila, no more leaks.🎉

most valve covers these days don't even need sealant, especially the silicone ones. But I use sealer on the old fashioned ones that use cheaper cork gaskets.
Good afternoon... I wish you were located here in Thousand Oaks,California. I just bought a used Toyota Camry 1999. With about 193k from a second owner just last week ..I am taking it in this week for either a Valve Cover Gasket repair or Head Gasket repair... The mobile station here in Newbury park,Ca has stellar reviews and last week they changed the oil,filter and topped up much needed fuels. Except I'm a bit nervous..about what condition the engine is in. Next week I am taking it in for a 21 point inspection..the mobile station claimed they did a ODB 2 on the vehicle? Though with the miles being so high and they did inspect hoses and such.. I have a feeling that I'm in for a wild .........ride..!

valve gaskets are on the top , just under the valve cover assembly. A pain to do, but just moving crap out of the way with normal hand tools. Head gasket is where the head bolts to the block , a GIANT job I would not advise doing except to really mechanical people with lots of tools and experience
I was going to tackle the job on my Lexus LS400. Then I looked carefully at all the stuff I have to remove just to get the valve covers with their spark plug tubes and I quickly changed my mind. Off to a pro. with my checkbook in hand.

Young Jay it went well! It took me a couple days of short periods of work. One thing I regret is leaving grease or oil on part of the paint for an extended amount of time. Hardest part was actually getting to the cover. My vehicle had a lot in the way

I was more interested in seeing how you fitted the new gasket, whether you put the gasket adhesive on both sides of the gasket? did you use a cork or a silicone gasket? this video should be described as how to change an old rocker cover to a new chrome one as there is practically zero explanation as regards the gasket.
Not as bad as my continental. Those idiots hired the most complex engineers. I have to remove the fuel injectors, the ignition coils, and a bunch of wires and hoses . That's the easy part for the front valve cover. I gave us since I didn't have a swivel but now that I have one I might just get to work.
live with it, you have to pull the head off to change the valve seals, and it could also be worn piston rings requiring a full rebuild. They can run years that way, just keep oil in it and change spark plugs as they carbon up
Hi , I have a question , It's my first time changing my valve cover gaskets and the car is a 1988 ford mustang with fuel injection so it has that tunnel ram thing that is in the way of getting the valve covers off. so how do I do it? thank you jodie
@X2N18 Just make them snug, they don't need that much force. They are small bolts and will break if tightened too much. That's why I used a tiny 1/4 inch ratchet. Scotty Kilmer
There are two types of gaskets, liquid and rubber. Most newer cars have a rubber gasket that you pop into the plastic valve cover. I realize this is a two year old comment 😂

there's tons of other o-rings and seals in the engine, the valve cover seal is not the only seal. to be honest those additives probably don't do much if you have an oil leak anyways.

yes, just take your time removing wires and vacuum lines, and realize that car's so old, hoses may break off and you may have to buy new small hoses that do split.

"Right Stuff". May you give me a little detail? I saw mixed information on the web. Some people say gasket itself is good enough. Some people say you have to add silicon sealant on the edge. if you use a gasket, you can put a little sealer on it to keep it from falling off the cover when you put it back on, i often do that. The faster drying sealers are best for that so you don't have to wait as long

@MrRygals just do as in this video , but being a newer engine than this video, you just have to move more crap out of the way to get em off. So take a picture of each side first for reference when putting it back on

yea, those VWs are a pain to work on, half the car has to come apart. There are torque settings of course, but I just make em snug by hand myself and never have problems

safe to do that, try some compressed air too to blow the crap out when loosened. I don't recollect any plastic clip though, if it's in the way, figure out how to turn it to get it off IF it has no bolts holding it on hiding under any small cover
Hi Scotty, I just finished replacing the valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals, and spark plugs on my 1992 Lexus ES300. It started up ok but after warming up is idling rough, I think it's running on 5 cylinders (feels like my 1992 Nissan Skyline when it needed a new coil pack). When accelerating I usually get all 6 cylinders, it's worst when stopped at lights, feels like it will stall but doesn't. When I start from cold it's ok until it warms up... Any suggestions?? I was going to go back and make sure the spark plug leads were pushed in properly etc, then maybe test the plug leads as I didn't replace them. The spark plugs I used are the ones recommended by Lexus / Toyota. It was fine before I did the work on it, so I figure it's something I've done, or maybe moving the spark plug wires was enough to be the death of one of them..?? Appreciate any help, I can't afford to pay someone to sort it out!
Jas George the back side gaskets are hell to get on, requiring intake manifold removal. SO many things can go wrong in that job, check for wiring shorts, vacuum leaks, and any sensor that may have been unplugged

Hey Scotty, I’m wondering why you’re not using, Permatex- High Tack Gasket Sealant for the valve covers? I was taught to use Permatex with gaskets, almost like an assemble lube. Note never spill a can of sealant into a bag of wrenches, what a mess. Great videos as always!

fan clutch is easy IF you have the special tool to unscrew that giant bolt. And the top of the intake would need removing to be the valve covers off the whole way, no working room there.

Hi Scotty , I replaced the valve cover gaskett and when putting the bolts back on I had a bolt snap off and I wasnt using any power tools just my hands and I am not a strong guy. The bolt is in a position where I cant get it out from the bottom and was left with a top that is a half moon on one side sticking up (so its not flush). I have used lubricating sprays and tried to use that little bit that is sticking up to grab onto rn it and tubut its not working. What should I do? PLEASE help me.

I replaced the valve cover gasket on my 94 Buick with the 3.8 in it. I dont know if there is an oil leak anywhere else because there is still oil all over the engine underneath the valve cover. How do you recommend cleaning the oil off so I can see if that fixed the leak and stop the smoking?
Dealer quoted $1000 for this on a Toyota. I feel little sympathy making them do $20 oil changes and taking the rest of the work elsewhere when they want to play gouging games like this.

prolly to late but you have to take the belt off the ac compressor loosen the bracket bolt and slide it our of the way.

you can use rubber without sealer. The price just depends on the car, some are 30 bucks, some are hundreds when parts have to come off like intakes.

Try doing this job on a Ford Explorer. The engineers decided to cover the these things with every single wire and hose the engine comes with.

@snowmangaggift It vents vapors from the intake and burns them in the engine. The car will have vacuum leaks until you fix it and idle poorly. Scotty

gaskets can leak anywhere, but normally oil goes down from leaks and gaskets on the valve covers are at the bottom of the covers

I am 16 years old and I could tell that was a shiney new edelbrock carb. chrome can make just about anything look better.

just do this and try scraping the caked up oil out with an ice pick and spray engine degreaser

old age baby, not valve cover gasket on that, it's burning inside the engine. Worn piston rings and valve seals inside the engine do that.

codyq0987 Ant brand. Make sure it is High temp RTV.
If it is a press fit gasket, you absolutely do NOT want to use RTV, it acts at a lubricant and will cause the gasket to squirt out.

oil leaks can be tricky, put uv leak dye to find the exact source, as n my video "finding and fixing engine oil leaks"
they make spray engine degreaser to get that off, but be careful hosing it off with water so you don't damage electronics.

safe to do that, try some compressed air too to blow the crap out when loosened. I don't recollect any plastic clip though, if it's in the way, figure out how to turn it to get it off IF it has no bolts holding it on hiding under any small cover
Does the Weatherstrip adhesive damage the cover or gasket?
Hi Scotty, I just finished replacing the valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals, and spark plugs on my 1992 Lexus ES300. It started up ok but after warming up is idling rough, I think it's running on 5 cylinders (feels like my 1992 Nissan Skyline when it needed a new coil pack). When accelerating I usually get all 6 cylinders, it's worst when stopped at lights, feels like it will stall but doesn't. When I start from cold it's ok until it warms up... Any suggestions?? I was going to go back and make sure the spark plug leads were pushed in properly etc, then maybe test the plug leads as I didn't replace them. The spark plugs I used are the ones recommended by Lexus / Toyota. It was fine before I did the work on it, so I figure it's something I've done, or maybe moving the spark plug wires was enough to be the death of one of them..?? Appreciate any help, I can't afford to pay someone to sort it out!
Jas George the back side gaskets are hell to get on, requiring intake manifold removal. SO many things can go wrong in that job, check for wiring shorts, vacuum leaks, and any sensor that may have been unplugged
never did that myself, just hand tighten em then go 1/4 turn more
Scotty, need you again. I have a Subaru Legacy and have no idea how to get to these seals. Do you have any videos that the motor is the same position as the Subaru?
Hey Scotty, I’m wondering why you’re not using, Permatex- High Tack Gasket Sealant for the valve covers? I was taught to use Permatex with gaskets, almost like an assemble lube. Note never spill a can of sealant into a bag of wrenches, what a mess. Great videos as always!

I’m replacing the valve gasket on my 1995 Corolla 1.6 and after putting on the new gasket do I need to apply gasket sealer or should I not? Is it needed?

just curious what did you charge for this job? if I use the felpro rubber gaskets do they still need sea lent? I've been told none is needed on rubber gaskets

thanks Scotty, Would it help if I added Lucas Oil stop leak or other products you mentioned in your other videos? Would that slow down the leak, or would it make it worse by plugging up the engine and cooling system?
fan clutch is easy IF you have the special tool to unscrew that giant bolt. And the top of the intake would need removing to be the valve covers off the whole way, no working room there.
@MissBelindaJade if it doesn't leak, that's fine. I use glue as in insurance.
Hey Scotty, I just replaced the Valve Cover gasket on my '61 Cadillac and now I am being told that I need to "Pressure Test" it Before starting the car up, is this really needed??

Hi Scotty , I replaced the valve cover gaskett and when putting the bolts back on I had a bolt snap off and I wasnt using any power tools just my hands and I am not a strong guy. The bolt is in a position where I cant get it out from the bottom and was left with a top that is a half moon on one side sticking up (so its not flush). I have used lubricating sprays and tried to use that little bit that is sticking up to grab onto rn it and tubut its not working. What should I do? PLEASE help me.
For a sbc engine going to chrome valve covers, do u put the weatherstrip glue on both sides of the gasket or 1?

it doesn't matter if its hard cuz i did this and i keep doing it until it doesn't much no more...

Hey Scotty. I have a 2003 Chevy Suburban with the 5.3 vortex in it. My valve cover gasket and bolt grommets were leaking oil. Upon replacing, I noticed that there was slight sludge and grime underneath. How can I clean the area?
hi scotty..there is leaking gunk ..not exactly oil around the valve cover and the distributor. What do u think is wrong in the distributor? and why does the owners manual not talk of the PCV valve replacement..Thanks!
I replaced the valve cover gasket on my 94 Buick with the 3.8 in it. I dont know if there is an oil leak anywhere else because there is still oil all over the engine underneath the valve cover. How do you recommend cleaning the oil off so I can see if that fixed the leak and stop the smoking?

Dealer quoted $1000 for this on a Toyota. I feel little sympathy making them do $20 oil changes and taking the rest of the work elsewhere when they want to play gouging games like this.
