  • Designed to seal the valve cover to the top of the cylinder head, the valve cover gasket is designed to keep motor oil from leaking out. For tips on installing Fel-Pro® press-in-place valve cover gaskets, along with spark plug tube seals and valve cover grommets, check out this video featuring ASE Master Certified Technician John Gurnig of the Fel-Pro Field Test Garage.
Designed specifically for the repair environment to help seal imperfect sealing surfaces, you can count on Fel-Pro sets to include all the parts you need to complete the repair. John first demonstrates the proper technique for installing a press-in-place a valve cover gasket and then gives pointers for working with spark plug tube seals and grommets. I've always used fel-pro Gaskets, but I built an engine a couple years ago and a very reputable mechanic told me to never use them because they're junk. So I bought my gaskets from fel-pro because I make my own decisions and they've never let me down. Engine runs great and doesn't leak. Some people just get weird ideas in their head and others listen to them and follow along. It's easier to follow than it is to think

There is a lot of confusion about the spark plug tube seals. Which way is up? I've seen them put in upside down. It would be nice if Fel-Pro included an instruction sheet to tell people which side goes up and which side goes down instead of having to guess.

Since the blue gaskets fall out when you try to put them on; I've tried spots of rtv (it worked, but it still sagged so badly between application spots i managed to pinch the gasket). This time i sprayed the valve cover gasket with super 77. It was way better, held in like a champ.

It doesn't fill the grooves all the way. We (the vendors and myself) verified 3 times that it was the correct gasket kit and it just doesn't have the notches.

Great Video, However your Gasket Kit for the popular 1.6L is not complete as it does not have the Grommets for the Valve Cover Change as needed, and as you state. These are imperative to a complete and quality job. Curiously I don't even se that you sell the Grommets for the 1.6L, which is even more concerning as multi manufactured gaskets, seals and grommets are NOT recommended. Nice Video though.

I have a 1996 Buick LeSabre. I’m installing a new water pump. Do I need a gasket sealer for this application? I’m asking about a gasket sealer and not so much about a gasket maker. If so, what product would be recommended? I’ll be using a thread sealer as well. Thank you.

    • @darrenwilliams1702

Permatex forma-gasket is the best RTV to use. Only apply it to 1 side of gasket though, place gasket on water pump in the orientation it's going to be installed. Be sure it covers the entire perimeter of pump and set aside a moment. If you have a fine wire wheel bit for a drill driver use that to remove any and all remaining gasket/RTV material left behind on the engines mating surface. Don't apply force with drill bit just lightly graze it, you don't want to gouge the surface. Yes! You wanna get ALL foreign material off. I've been doing this since the time I didn't get all the gasket off and the truck returned 2 weeks later with a slight leak and I could hear that distinctive sound the propeller & bearings make letting you know water pump is going bad. But hey you've got one of the very best engines ever built, other than the 350 5.7L Chevy's Corvette C-5 and in 2001 it was placed into the ZO6 Corvette model. Anyway Chevrolet stopped production of the 5.7L 350 cid in 2005. Yeah there's others; Nissan Titan but the rear axle was geared too low causing less torque, Mopar did it to the Hemi but failed to modify the intake (high-rise). I had the 350 5.7L from the Chevy plant in my 1992 Silverado it was an LS6 which in todays world the engine was produced for the Corvette ZO6. Oh and on your pre-installing of water pump keep the gasket on the pump, flatten out the gasket as best you can and take tube of Permatex and like calking, start a bead and go over the entire perimeter even around bolt holes and don't spread it. Be sure it stays in bead form and once you've covered just the 1 side of gasket pick up pump and put a bolt thru a hole in the top of pump and 1 in bottom of pump, to help keep gasket from moving. Then place it on front of engine having a socket on an extension to finger tighten those 2 bolts just to keep it in place. Then you've got the rest, but you'd mentioned using a thread sealer on bolts? Be careful not to use a product that'll have too much resin or hardener as I broke off a bolt due to that. I use Permatex Threadlocker Blue, Medium Strength and it's always perfect, it'll withstand vibrations and temps 300+ degrees. Be sure to tighten to proper torque and don't tighten in a circle or clockwise. Go across from one another, example - looking at a clock face go 10-40, 50-20, 12-6 I think you've got it engine bolts should be tightened in a similar pattern as a tire ya know. So sorry bro for the Novel damn! I'm an instructor at a Technical College and force of habit I guess. I damn well best break it. Hope this was any help at all Brian. Try and hit me back if need be. Take care of that Buick you'll get a million miles out of it. Keep air filter changed and use full Synthetic oil 5W20 and a WIX oil filter the one that's made to filter raw crude oil like synthetic.
Have a great night bro and God bless!
      Peace,
      Mister Darren Goodwrench 🧰🔧

I call B.S. I just got done installing valve cover gaskets in a 5.7l hemi. Felpro gaskets were junk, for to order separate grommet gaskets and the valve cover gasket wasn't made properly and kept falling out of groove. Quality left the company for price gouging profits.

    • @dkkauffmanjr

@propcrazy2317 honestly I used a dab of grease on the locking tabs to keep it sticking. You don't ever want to use rtv sealant on these types of gaskets. Be mindful on dropping them in and torque to spec. Mechanics mirror helps to triple check alignment once the cover is on and some of the bolts are finger started.

Just use a little of that 3M glue that is designed for gaskets on the corners, let it dry and then install. Replaced both valve cover gaskets recently on a '10 Hemi and had the same issue you did as it appeared the gasket was simply too large for my particular engine. Gluing the corners first solved the problem.

I find the quality of Fel-Pro Gaskets have gone quit a but over time. Such that the make them so as not to actually fit in the grove of the Valve cover tightly. Which results in making the install much more work and as such you have to use RTV to hold the things in place. Recommend putting RTV every 3" and at the ends of corners and one in the corner.
