      Important tip for preventing sealant in tubes from going bad over extended periods even when capped tight: Put the cap on but don't start threading it - keep it loose just holding it over the tip. Squeeze out sealant so it flows out from under the cap as you hold it. Push the cap on and start threading it to tighten. This purges the sealant that was exposed to air at the nozzle tip and prevents the cure process from getting started internally (catalyzed by humidity with most sealants) and makes the re-closed tube last almost as long as an unopened one.

    You should never use weather stripping, it will cause the gasket to dry out early and might make for a poor fit on the next gasket if they don't take time to clean all the material you put in there. Just use a thin layer of grease or preferable Petroleum jelly which is the recommend procedure by Mercedes-Benz. The jelly will make the gasket stick to the inside of the valve cover and will not compromise the seal. Plus it has the added benefit of keeping the gasket soft from heat cycling. And if any is left on a future replacement, it will just slide off.

    • @Russell-rc6qq
      @Russell-rc6qq Месяц назад

      So just to be clear here it is okay to use petroleum jelly like Vaseline here and there in moderation around where the gasket fits into the cover? I have applied some to a pliable, rubber-like gasket in a Corolla. Does it matter that the two areas where I applied RTV gasket maker has come into contact with the jelly? I have set and bolted the valve cover back together. I am waiting for the RTV to dry and I see some of the jelly emanating from this area where the RTV is at, too.

    That's clean? I've pulled covers of engines with 300k on them that were cleaner than that. According to the milage I would say it's a short trip driver

      Most likely due to the fact that this "obviously well cared for" vehicle was so low on oil that nothing even registered on the dip stick.

    Right on top of things, and great with the suggestions as well. Thank you. Glad I watched your truck series as well. I was looking to buy a Silverado or a Sierra. Guess I'll have to re-think my options. Sorry not a Ford or Toyota guy. Too many hiccups in the past with both.

      It's weird. I hate the mechanic part. Everyone relies on you but you get so busy you can't help them, you basically get sucked in and cant think about anything besides cars.
