I never played AC until Odyssey, my masters degree is in ancient history, specifically ancient greek, it's one of my passions and loves, what i wanna do with my life is just study it, so when i saw a game about it i picked it up, and played tf out of it, hundreds of hours just looking at the locations i loved learning about so much, i found the combat and leveling fun, for that reason i will always love it, and it even led me to play the other games which i loved..... THAT BEING SAID, i completely understand why a lot of AC fans hate its guts, seeing as theres barely anything about Assassins or anything connecting to the other games at all, i completely understand and get why some find it insulting xD

Odyssey does have connections to the rest of the series. Sure, it's more about the Isu rather than Assassins vs Templars but then again it's chronologically the first game in the series so it makes sense that it's more about the Isu rather than the Assassins vs Templars conflict.

    • @Bardim18
      @Bardim18 2 года назад +25

@@mithras666 Exactly, thanks! People who criticize AC Odyssey seem to forget that back in their beloved AC2 main protagonist Ezio used an Isu artifact to make illusions yet the powers Alexios and Kassandra get in Odyssey are "fantastical and lore-breaking", not to mention that the Isu themselves were in fact introduced at the end of AC2. They need to realize that the Assassin's Creed series isn't about Assassins vs Templars but it's about the Creed itself and those who follow it across the ages. The Assassin/Templar conflict is, as you said, the "byproduct" of the Isu storyline.

Here's the thing: I think the templars are acting like templars in rogue. Finding shay nearly dead with the manuscript, the templars saw an opportunity to get information out of shay as well as the manuscript, and taking in an assassin, who are far more deadly than your average templar, could shift the course of history, seeing shay as more of a tool than a person.

He put Ac 1 in S tier because it had substance, it created a legacy around Altair for anyone who played it.
When there are so many games that throws everything that made Assassin’s creed what it was and forget about every single rule established to fill a shallow pile of garbage it’s not like you can really complain about a linear game with few things good you do over and over.
The repetitive gameplay is only a side problem to the modern games because they lack substance.
Therefore you cannot argue about AC1 being above those, I don’t really agree with James for it being the highest tier alongside masterpieces but on the other hand how could you even think about putting it alongside Ac3 and Origins?

Honestly Connor is one of my favorite characters, especially when you do the homestead missions it’s gives a lot more depth to his character. People are annoyed because he’s “naive” but he’s extremely young and he does start to grow as the story progresses, going from “Templar’s are all bad” to “wait maybe templars and assassins have a chance to better the world together” his whole story switches from revenge to fighting for equality and freedom. I don’t think he’s naive I think he’s hopeful and empathetic. Idk I think he’s got his flaws but so does every other protagonist.

AC3 is far from being my favourite but I really don't think that Connor is a bad character. He just feel like a downgrade from Haytham. You get to play as him for a pretty long while, get to know the character , his motives and a pretty significant amount of story, then you get thrown into Connor and now you setting traps for rabbits. The setting itself is, for my liking, the least interesting out of every AC game.

Something I don't see many people talk about as well is how the themes of Connor's story are directly tied to Desmond's story. Everyone shits on Desmond dying but I don't think they appreciate that is the natural resolution of his character arc throughout the series.
The Templar assassin divide is one based on freedom Vs control but since AC1 it's shown that isn't the good Vs evil that it seems. The assassin's want freedom for people but without taking an active role in what replaces the power vacuum they create by killing tyrannical leaders, the individual is just left to the whims of the next dictator. A templar like haytham also wants the best for the common person but he sees the contradiction in the assassin's approach. That the only way to ensure what is best for the common people is by being at the top of the hierarchy, to ensure he can protect the people below. Desmond at the beginning of AC rejects the brotherhood and Templar dichotomy completely and runs away, only to be dragged back in. His choice at the end of AC 3 is about making a choice. Does he choose the assassin ideology, or the Templar one. Does he avert the disaster and let people try to figure out what to do next, or does he let it happen and take control himself as the next Messiah. Is he an assassin or is he actually a templar. And he chooses to be an assassin. In that final act he is choosing the freedom of the people, even though he doesn't know what that might entail. AC3's story is seriously underrated imo.

I do like Ezio’s story and the modern day plot, subject 16’s puzzles are among my favorite moments in the series, the atmosphere of AC1 is also amazing, but the flaws in gameplay are too big to be ignored. AC1 is too repetitive in it’s short playtime and some AC2 missions’ restart upon detection are outright annoying, enemies can detect you for one second during air assassinations make it even worse, the combat also lacks flows. I’m glad they fixed the combat in brotherhood and stealth in revelations. AC1/2 will be B Tier for me at best. The other three do deserve it though, they aged really well even today.

Not that surprised, though I’m surprised he put AC3 where it is given his usual views on it. I still think he does it a disservice in its story/characterization and how, while it’s parkour is more animated, you can still get close to the freedom of the prior titles, but i guess it is what it is?
I also chuckle that he touches on gameplay for most of them..except Black Flag. Black Flag, he focused only on the story, which is a good one, don’t get me wrong (though..it doesn’t come across to me as “all” about the creed), but the gameplay drags it down as it’s a more streamlined/watered down version of AC3’s. But that’s just me.

I don’t know if someone is ever going to read this, because this is going to be a very long comment. But I wanted to share my opinion on the ac games. I didn’t play all the side games, and therefore, I won’t talk much about them.
    - Assassin’s creed I: it’s a masterpiece. It might feel repetitive at times, but the setting is amazing, the story is compelling. The only thing that isn’t great is that since there are no cutscenes, many dialogues are forgotten, or don’t get enough credit. But considering it’s an old game, I don’t give to much weight on that.
    - Assassin’s creed II: It’s a masterpiece too, and my favorite ac personally. Ezio is great, and the character development is truly something gaming companies should strive for. It is interesting to see the perspective of this character and how he acts during his life, changing his mind, evolving and becoming a better person. From a teenager who is driven by revenge, to a wise man able to do his choices, still with consequences.
    - Assassin’s creed Brotherhood: I think it’s an excellent game, the story is great and the characters too. The only thing I should mention is that it misses a lot if you don’t play the side quests. On my first playthrough I didn’t and I thought initially it was rushed. On my other playthroughs however I realized it was a masterpiece like the previous two. It’s definitely the ac game with the best side quests.
    - Assassin’s creed revelation: What a game! It’s worth every penny. The story is, like James said, great. In fact the greatest it has ever been in an ac game. The music is so nostalgic every time I listen to it and it never gets old. The only negative thing I can find is that it shouldn’t be the first ac game you play, because even if still great, if you play it as your first you miss out on many points that have been established by other games. My friend did it and didn’t like the game much until he played II and brotherhood. But as far as ac game goes: 10/10
    - Assassin’s creed III: So ac III is quite controversial, because I liked the initial concept, but I don’t like Connor very much. I also can’t get over the fact that he looks the same when he’s 14 and first meets Achilles and when he is 22. Actually I think that he is ok for a protagonist, but his story should have been developed more to show a change in his attitude, which would have been awesome, but it never happened, so Connor is just a character I don’t like much.
-Assassin’s creed liberation: It’s just strange, characters feel weird, the mechanics are not used much and I dislike the mentor of Aveliene for some reason.
-Assassin’s creed Black Flag: It’s fantastic. Edward is a great protagonist. Like Altaïr and Ezio, he has some sort of negative trait, which is greed for Edward, but he evolves and is involved with the creed at some time in his life. You can see his perspective of the creed itself, which brings upon another theme which is that the creed is applied differently depending on the character. The story is all a journey for him to become an assassin, and this is perfectly done.
Assassin’s creed rogue: Again I think that rogue had a very big potential, but it wasn’t served in the right way. Seeing the Templar side would have been cool, but the way they are shown in rogue just feels wrong. It also feels wrong the motives behind Shay’s decision to leave the assassin’s they are just not powerful enough to engage the player.
Assassin’s creed Unity: I think that ac unity is a kind of a love story, more than an assassin story. Bellec is a particular character, which could have benefited successfully more the game and the protagonist itself. But he isn’t used us much as I would like. Also, the ending is a bit rushed in my opinion. Maybe I just got it wrong, but Arno is not in a good relationship with the other members of the creed, but he becomes a Master assassin after defeating the leader of the Templar order. I get that they wanted to show how he truly believed in the creed, but it’s just too fast. Did you get what I mean.
Assassin’s creed Syndicate: I think this is just a parody of the series. The combat is silly, the characters feel stupid. The story is just weak, not entertaining. It’s kind of repetitive at some point. And the parkour is not done well enough for me. While must say I really enjoyed sequence 8 (I think it was 8) where Jacob has a whole adventure where he meets a Templar who then betrays him. This sequence is the only point where Jacob shows some cool character Traits.
    - Assassin’s Creed Origins: This is my favorite new gen ac game. Bayek is the best protagonist there has been since Edward. His story is done really well. I’ve never thought about it, but it is true that philosophy is missing. The creed itself is only introduced at the end of the game, and much is missing from the philosophy of the creed. That’s why I don’t consider this title as good as ac I, II, brotherhood, or revelations. But still great and fun to play nonetheless.
    - Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: I don’t need to explain why this game is shit. Lazerzz already did in a 40 minute video, which I advice you should watch, if you haven’t.
    - Assassin’s creed Valhalla: This game hasn’t much to do with assassins and templars, but the lore and the story are pretty interesting. The issue however is that it’s too long. It feels like they had so many side quests and at the last moment decided to put every side activity in the main quests, so that the game didn’t feel empty. Some locations were great, but some other just felt useless and boring. I didn’t have issues with the combat system, even if you don’t have regular swords unless you buy dlcs. But I dislike the fact the game had decisions. It’s not as bad as odyssey, but I sometimes feel that decisions are often inconsistent with the character, especially when talking about stealth. For example: You play like an assassin, talk like an assassin, act like an assassin, but Evoir, as a character, doesn’t want to be an assassin that is just strange and weird.
Anyway, if you made it here, I thank you, if you have some opinions or suggestions you want to share, that would be great.

Whenever the next game comes out I would like to play as an actual assassin again, or even a templar (thats done better than rogue) instead of playing as an irrelevant character where the Assasins are Non existent or just side content.
There are so many different settings they could do that are set after the Crusades. I'm currently playing Odyssey for the first time and while admittedly I am enjoying the game actually, it doesn't feel one bit like I'm playing assassins Creed. It should be its own thing.
Iv played AC since the beginning back in 2007 and I will never forget how intriguing and mysterious the first game was, I Understand the Assassins creed Universe needed to be expanded upon but not to the point where it completely loses its identidy! After I watched the Dawn of Ragnorak trailer I think I will stop playing these games. Clearly all they are arsed about now is making a full Fantasy game with supernatural powers and magical abilities, Then slapping the iconic name Assassins Creed on the front just for the $$$
I get why newbies to the franchise might like it but for an old timer of the franchise like me, No thanks. There are other games out there you can play to feel like a badass Demi God (God of war) but me... I want assassins creed.

This is a valid list must origins for me should be in A. Bayek is a great character and the open world of Egypt is my favorite setting that ac has done. It’s debatably the most detailed as well. I do agree that the story should’ve been more about THE ORIGINS of the creed but the world of Egypt alone makes it into the A tier.
Edit - IF the story focus on more of the creation of the creed and less on revenge it would be S tier. Origins still has a good story but the revenge plot has been done too much in other games. The RPG gameplay isn’t as bad as the other 2 but it still can get annoying at times.

    Assassins Creed Origins
The Setting of Ptolemaic Egypt is superb, the entire region is filled with immense beauty, the setting pulls you in and saturates your brain in another time,in another world.
The setting is so beautiful that you wish not to ride atop your cherished camel ,instead you constantly want to walk the sand covered streets, the agricultural fields of the Bread Basket,in the blissfully idyllic oasis and in the spectacular landscapes of the Egyptian desert.
The wildlife is accurate, engaging and adds an adventurous aspect to the game, like wrestling a Nile crocodile or running away from a charging hippopotamus, it feels so natural and makes you love Egypt even more.
You have a pet falcon that aids in scouting and in combat, the most perfect friend a man can ask for.
    I love my little Horus.
The weapons, the outfits/armours are numerous and stupendous.
The combat is fun and engaging with a clear progression arch, making you feel stronger only when you work on improving your combat.
Although it is not as good as the older games, it relies to much on button mashing and ‘’adrenaline power ups’’ instead of well timed counters and beautiful/elegant counter/take down moves. For the Copesh … the most iconic Egyptian sword...there are only 2 KILL MOVES…
Whilst fighting unarmed , you can’t disarm an enemy , here to it is just button mashing and ‘’adrenaline power ups’’..to to faster button mashing…. It is frightening to me how AC1s combat is far superior to a game created more than a decade later.
Unfortunately there is no social stealth….you can only hide in bushes, hay or some sparsely placed closets. No blending into/hiding in crowds, on benches, or working with clerical factions to hide in plain sight. They really missed the ball on this one.
The characters are most engaging, Baek is a brilliant protagonist, a Madjey returning home after a long expedition ,finding his home under occupation and tracking down those in power with ill repute and working on creating a regime change.

You can disable the idiotic damage numbers which greatly increases immersion.
You can read scattered papyri that tells you so much of this fabled land,of its peoples and its culture, then you get to delve into ancient (even for that time) crypts ,exploring the ancient tombs of Pharaohs a milenia older than Cleopatra herself, that leaves you itching with excitement to see what adventurous treasures lies around the next corner.
This game is a visual piece of art, bringing the past to life.
Although it is not perfect ,It is really good.
8.5/10 due to the mediocre combat and lack of social stealth..

I see a lot of people criticise Syndicate. To me the game is quite fun though, we don't have many games out there about victorian era and Syndicate did good at recreate London at that time. I somehow enjoy the color and theme of Syndicate more than Unity, Paris is beautiful and high-quality but the light is a bit dark and there're too much chaos around as the city is surrounded by revolutionary. Sometimes having a chill walk seeing people around and look at the beautiful scenery is better than just running around killing everyone. The combat is kind of ok, not too bad though, you can still assassinate the whole areas without detected but you can also gun brawling everyone which makes sense as this time people was equipped with gun more than melee so a bit of gangster style maybe acceptable. The story is not good, at least when we talk about AC lore, I think if this is a standalone game about the victorian era fill with money and bullet and gang war will suit more. A story of a gang leader rise up against a corrupted politician or even if it has some kind of mudder case solving like Sherlock Holmes may do the work. Honestly the AC lore should stop after the ending of Unity, Syndicate is where we start to see developers forced to make a bad written story just to may use of the AC title so they can sell the game. We have great games in the past like altair, Ezio trilogy, kenway saga but it does reach it limit though. The new rpg/warrior creed may have better open world or fun combat but is just doesn't have the soul of the AC one

The main reason is the story. I love Rogue gameplay-wise. But the story, nah... It could've been better. I mean, we've seen how assassin can be mistaken like Ezio killed innocent Tariq that looks suspicious but in the end, h was on Ottoman's side. Make a scene like that with some adaptation to the environment so it would've fueled Shay's doubt and anger about the creed he used to live so his betrayal made more sense, plus add the philosophical battle between Shay and his former companion.

The story was awesome. Shay is a part of haythams templar order and haytham does espouse the templar belief with the old assassin belief in peace. Shay was more attached to the age old belief in peace rather than free will bordering on anarchism that Achilles brotherhood at that time had wanted. Shay was an assassin even as a templar, he actually upheld the tenets of the creed more than Achilles did. He just went rogue to save the brotherhood.

I feel like one of the biggest flaws of this series started at the Assassin's Creed 3 mark. They stopped making multiple games for a protagonist. We got three (main) games with Ezio and even got another one with Altair through Revelations but just think. He's my least favorite as well, but Connor could have gotten another game that showed his growth after the epilogue speech and showed him become wiser through his failures in three and could have given the homestead characters more development, maybe even have them join the assassins and that could have been some strong character building that he desperately needed. Same thing for Black Flag, sure it may not have needed a sequel, but the game could focus on Haytham and his exploration of the assassin ideology and then the templar one where he chose the latter because he felt it better suited the world. Then THAT would have been a perfect time to release a better written Rogue game that let you play a fellow defect through Shay and Haytham could see himself in him and better flesh out his character. Then make a sequel to rogue that has focuses on Shay in France or Europe to be a better prequel to Unity, maybe have Shay finally get his karma in the form of a nameless Assassin dressed in blue instead of white. That's so weird? Why is he wearing blue? Who is he? The perfect build up to Unity. We find out his story and we find out this seemingly insignificant Assassin target that we killed was his father and he was seeking Revenge. Unity could have had another year of development and it would have been good enough to warrant a sequel that focused on a now wiser Arno that discovers a link to his father's death and follows it to maybe have a cameo from Connor, but Connor let's Arno be the one to hunt him because he was his father's murderer. Maybe have both characters discuss the absence of a father in their lives through different means. It would be a nice send off for Connor to show he's developed further and even regrets his rashness, and the have Arno finally succeed at something I mean my poor boy. I love him to death but I think there's no question that he was the worst assassin in the franchise. Not because he was a bad character, but he was just a bad assassin. As for syndicate, I don't really know. Maybe another game could help but everyway I look at it that gam was just destined to be a spinoff or something.
Anyway I'm rambling, but if they would have just built characters more and developed stories better the games would have been better. Even they and just let Unity simmer a bit more, they could have further evolved the introduced mechanics and we may have had a completely different more familiar franchise these days.
But I'm just rambling about an alternate timeline at this point I suppose...

    • @Basisreallycool
      @Basisreallycool 2 года назад +3

I'm not James but let me tell you why I'd keep unity at a C tier or below. Let's start at the objective bits. The bits that really depend on the player: combat, stealth and parkour. I will rank these according to the tastes of a person who has grown up and enjoyed the ac1 era(so me and James)
The combat in unity felt like an assassin on a bad day, except constantly. It was lacking in animations, which soon got repetitive. Challenging in combat, to the point where you wondered whether Arno is at all well trained (and I'll get to this when I talk about story). Also, if anything it even serves a precursor to the rpg era. The brutes take over ten direct hits with a sword to die.
The stealth is fine, almost good. It feels fluid and fats paced, with a multitude of animations. Picking locks as a part of stealth was great and finally, finally, you could crouch. But other than the crouch, innovation was scarce, the phantom blade was just a low ammo throwing knife/crossbow. Everything, every gadget, is just a variation from a previous game. And at least previous games don't stop you from switching cover weirdly, assassinating the wrong enemy etc. (I'll get to this later too.)
The parkour is one of the most opinionated and objective points. See, I like control with moderate but realistic speed. Thats what I see as good parkour. Others, I suppose you included, prefer flashy animations and over the top, crazy jumps. Which I can't get on board with. AC already suffers from the great myth which is the leap of faith. It doesn't need glitched jumping too. And before you say it. I am one of those players that is more than adequate at combat stealth and parkour. I have watched Leo Ks videos. And learnt it myself. And I find Unitys parkour unresponsive at times. I play on the PS5.
Okay so story. I mentioned before when I was talking about combat that I was going to elaborate. Elaborate about how he supposedly well trained. Because, unlike Ezio, we don't train him as a part of the story. In fact, we don't even get to see him learn new stuff. We just unlock things like staggering strike by using 'tokens'. The story is a basic love story. It doesn't excel and it doesn't exactly fail. I can understand if some people like it. But it's nowhere near the top.
So it's graphics are good. I get that. But if the cost is thats it's unplayable at launch then maybe it's not worth it. Unity is a representation of Ubisofts greed. They were so eager to release a game each year the pumped out unity when it wasn't ready at all. You may be able to play it now but it wasn't just a 'pc' day one launch. It was an all platform month long ruined launch. And glitches extended past that month. even now, 7 whole years later, there's still bugs and once again. I'm on the PS5. I've been glitched into walls, had enemies not attack me at all, people disappear, people fly, seen textures hovering off the ground, had a loading screen that stayed as a loading screen. ON THE PS5. Look, I'm not saying the bugs make it a bad game, but even without them, it is a good game at best. and moderate every other time.

    • @liamstewart2287
      @liamstewart2287 2 года назад

@@Basisreallycool - I mostly agree with this, but I'm gonna pick on your point about the combat, specifically.
"Challenging in combat, to the point where you wondered whether Arno is at all well trained. The brutes take over ten direct hits with a sword to die."
Unity is meant to be a stealth game; more so than any other game in the franchise. To a large degree, this is probably how the first Assassin's Creed would've played at some point in development, before they made Altair have more health. I've also always felt that the 'unbeatable with a blade' clause of the fourth development commandment was the most destructive to the franchise. A stealth game's tension largely stems the physical vulnerability of the player in gameplay. Take Garrett from the Thief series as an example. Thief is based on the gameplay loop of hiding in shadows, and listening for a guard's footsteps to avoid detection, so that you can steal from whoever you're robbing without the guards noticing you. The offensive options you have in Thief are your sword, your blackjack, and gas arrows (which are an end-game item, and thus rare & expensive). Backstabs will kill most enemies in one hit, or severely weaken them. Blackjacking any living opponent without being spotted results in an instant knockout. Finally, gas arrows are reliable for knocking out living opponents from range, and have an AoE, so they can dispatch multiple guards at once.
Now if you have your sword in Thief, why not just bum rush every guard in the mansion, and go on a ruthless massacre? Well, because you're physically weak, and you're not good at actual swordplay. Singular mid-game guards can very easily overpower Garrett in 1 to 2 hits in combat, and can outmaneuver you very easily. If you get detected, you're basically forced to drop a flash bomb, and run away.
Now obviously this is for a thief. The rules for an assassin should be different. The assassin should be far more competent at swordplay than a thief, but they should not be able to take 15-20 hits before dying, and I don't think they should be able to take on an entire battalion of soldiers either. There should be a tension to getting into open conflict, and there should be and incentive to actually use your tools in combat to gain the upper hand when fighting multiple opponents, which Unity gives you. More importantly, there should be a large incentive to run away, rather than fight, derived from a feeling of overwhelming odds. Aside from the first Assassin's Creed, Unity is really the only game in the series that actually had this. It's better to run & find a hiding spot than it is to murder everyone since Arno goes down quickly. I do agree though that turning enemies into damage sponges is a bad way to do this, unless there's an convincing explanation, like them wearing armor. As well, the big difference between Unity and the RPG trilogy is that Unity's assassination is a guaranteed one hit kill, and you have far more tools to use for avoiding conflict than you do in the newer games. The balancing of gear is also far better in Unity than in the newer games (Odyssey & Valhalla especially).

    • @Basisreallycool
      @Basisreallycool 2 года назад

@@liamstewart2287 yeah I was fine with the low health but I didn't like the way in which it was challenging. Like damage sponges. As you said it would make more sense for them to have armour but they didn't. Instead you got some large guy wearing just a shirt, taking over tens direct sword hits and still standing. Like it was just stupid. Ac 1 was my favourite combat and game in the series by the way and I really do feel like they nailed the level of difficulty without making Altair a pathetic child with a sword. Like it was challenging at the start but the swords damage was actually damage. If you get what I mean. I hope I answered why unity isnt appreciated by some people and would just like to reiterate that whilst I wasn't a massive fan of it, I can respect that you might have loved it. Oh yeah, and I said precursor to the rpg era, not that it was the same. May I also ask what ranking you would give the games.

But the cities are far too vast with few differences. As the first daynight cycle it is a bit of a downgrade in terms of graphics. And honestly, compared to brotherhood and revelations, it comes out below. Black flag is on par with the Ezio trilogy but since I put AC 2 below the other Ezio trilogy games I had to also put it below black flag. But I mean, well deserved. Black flag was an insanely incredible game. Blackbeard's death... The drinking scene at the end of the game. 😭.

One thing that I never see anyone talk about in this community is that it’s just really hard (for me at least) to buy into the fact that Shay becomes a Templar.
The concept of Rogue is super cool: after having multiple games where we explore Assassin ideology we can finally see the perspective of the other side for once and really enforce the idea of the assassin-Templar conflict being really a tale of two differing factions being in a gray area ideology-wise.
We unfortunately never got this. The Templars we meet in Rogue never talk with Shay about their beliefs/ideology to really convert him to the Templar order (Order, stability, etc.). They just talk about how bad the assassins are (which they objectively are btw. Not just from Shays pov. Objectively evil and corrupt) and Shay ultimately just joins them because “oooh, these guys have beef with assassins and I do as well so I might as well just join their order I guess (even tho I basically killed some of their people for my job before but let’s forget about that one I guess lol).
And one thing I see no one mention (not even you surprisingly): logically Shay should still hold Assassin ideals. He never talks about how he doesn’t believe in the creed “nothing is true, everything is permitted” anymore. Shay would be like the Martin Luther of the assassins in that way. He still maintains his ideals, he just doesn’t like the order pursuing said ideals anymore because it’s a fundamentally flawed organization. He should logically hate the Assassins AND the Templars. Templars hate him because he’s an assassin set out to kill their millennia-long enemy and assassins should hate him because he’s the guy that left the brotherhood and is really really really mad at them. He would be kind of a second Altaïr in a way. It would be cool to have a game where we play as a guy that is hunted by both assassins AND Templars and we really dive deeper in the gray area of this conflict.
Edit: maybe you could even write the story around both sides tempting him to their side. In ac3 it was already brought up that both sides really want the same thing, why not write a whole game around this concept? This way both Shay and the player can really notice both flaws and good things about both sides and really enforce the idea that there is no good or bad in this ancient war
Another edit lol: why not end the game on a massive cliff hanger where Shay HAS to make a choice between joining the assassins or the Templars really quickly and fully leave his story there forever? We would be talking and discussing it to this very day I imagine which side he would’ve chosen and we would’ve had our own cringy “Team Edward or Team Jacob” kind of thing going on in the community

Odyssey is my #1 by a good stretch, then Origins, then Black Flag (haven't played Valhalla yet, but I imagine it may usurp Black Flag for me once I get to it). I guess for me it's more the world, the vistas, the landscapes and a bit of a decent story sprinkled in is nice.
I feel like you may be suffering a bit from a lack of self awareness though as your critique of people liking Unity, and your reasons for liking some of the titles, like AC1, overlap in a weird way. But hey, we all like what we like, no need to justify it to anyone! De gustibus non est disputandum.

I would be curious what you think about this sir. I am not trying to defend AC3 but I do disagree about Connor lacking development. His naivety and anger is his development. He was given a purpose by the deity his clan specifically worships as a young boy. He believed he was on a path of righteousness but he was taken advantage of due to his naivety to how things worked outside of his village which is all he knew before hand. His frustration at the world for not being as honest as he was raised to believe it should be is why he is always so angry. In the end he is left bitter with the realization that even though he technically succeeded, it doesn't matter because the world isn't black and white and even the good guys are no better then the very people he fought off for them. I felt like he was a good character for the first game of the series to truly dive in to the possibility of Templar not always being completely in the wrong. It really focused on the gray morality of things. And I think that was reflected in the neutral colors with all the browns and grays you also hated lol.
But hey that's just my opinion. I hope you see this and feel compelled to respond because I'm curious what you think about how I see things.

I get what you’re saying, and I’m glad you found a meaning within the game, but the game doesn’t actually tell you any of this, you read into it and kinda made all that up. Like I said, I appreciate you found a meaning there, that’s what’s good about art, people can find meaning in anything.
I just don’t really feel the game presents anything you’ve said here, and even if it does it doesn’t exactly do it well. AC1 manages to show us the grey area for bother orders without sacrificing compelling writing to get there. AC3 makes the templars kinda in the right, I find myself completely agreeing with them and feel pretty annoyed that Connor wants to keep killing them despite them having plenty of reasonable things to say. I didn’t feel that way with Altair in AC1, I was always with Altair because he did as he was told yet questioned, we saw him learn, with every assassination we see the evil, which clashes with the good spoken by each target, of which Altair begins to feel conflicted, all of which culminates in him realising what he’s been raised to believe isn’t entirely correct. The templars had a point. Sure they don’t completely align with the Assassins, but they had reason, reason Altair used to grow.
Connor doesn’t grow, he doesn’t want to grow, the templars are more morally correct than morally grey and Connor continues to murder them, because he was told to, not because we observe any actual reason to kill them.
What you’ve said is likely what they were aiming for, and it’s fine if you can feel that potential there and appreciate the smaller things, I just don’t feel they executed it even close to well.

Assassin's Creed Odyssey is the best game in the entire series. Story wise, combat wise, stealth wise, entertainment wise, map wise, graphics wise, all of it and above. The only problem is that it has nothing to do with Assassin's. So that's why lots of you guys don't give it a chance.

Ac Valhalla “When you know what’s gonna happen everything becomes boring” bro that’s like… how story’s work. Your issue seems to be that the game is too long for you to commit to playing it through again and again but that is simply a consequence of any game that massive. Which is why the game was supposed to be supported for 2 years. You weren’t meant to play it over and over but rather it was meant to be built upon over time.

I know Assassin's Creed Odyssey isn't one of your favorites (for whatever reason), but... take the mainline title out and probably rename it as "Odyssey of Greece" and you got a solid game. I liked Kassadra more than any other character you play as (don't know why you dissed her), and the game overall is most extensive (especially with DLC). Plus, there's a lot of background stuff happening around Kassandra's story, and how Assassin's Creed Brotherhood came to fruition.

I think your analogy with Unity and the Star Wars prequel trilogy is right, but in a different way. Like with the prequels, it's not so much that Unity became a 'good' game, just like the Star Wars prequels didn't become 'good' movies, per se. It's more of a case of "well, look at how bad it got after this", and because of that, people started virulently defending the game (myself included). I don't hold Unity up as a paragon, or even a good game. However, I still defend it because in many ways, I consider it the only true spiritual sequel to the first Assassin's Creed (in terms of gameplay mechanics, and that's not counting the watered down parkour). After seeing what has come after it, it's hard not to. I also remember what most of the people who weren't Assassin's Creed fans were immolating the game critically for. Most of the critiques I remember that weren't bug related (the ones that were justifiable) was that it wasn't Black Flag or 3, as in: it didn't have naval. Directing criticism at Unity for being a broken mess, or the story being dogshit I 100% understand & support; getting mad at a social stealth/assassination game for not having naval combat is some weapons-grade stupidity to me. Those were also the criticisms that Ubisoft listened to. I'd put it at 50/50, truth be told (more on principle, than anything else).

Assassin's creed 1 as a tier S game. That's when I noticed how incredibly personal this is because as much as I can appreciate what AC was trying to make, I really think that the first game was very, very, very flawed in almost every aspect. I was able to beat the game just looking at the minimap. Seriously. The character just goes over any obstacle in any pointed direction and nothing can kill you if you just keep running. The gameplay is broken, the quest side system is barely functional... The story was ok, it was interesting. The idea was creative.
I liked the game but oh my god tier S...
Well, now I know what to expect from the rest XD

    I have no credentials to judge them, and no one asked for it but here’s my list anyway;
    S Tier:
Brotherhood - Needs to explanation. My only complaints are basic combat and the story felt a bit short. Everything else is golden.
2 - Perfect storytelling in all respects. Only passed by Brotherhood because of the Brotherhood mechanics.
Revelations - Diminished gameplay but the best story of AC and the most perfect ending to any game I’ve ever played. I cri every teim.
Black Flag - The combat was not very good, but the open world and Edward’s characterisation was phenomenal. If I liked him more than Ezio, maybe this would be the top game.
    A Tier:
1 - Misses S tier because of the repetitive and outdated combat, but does many things better than many subsequent games.
Bloodlines - Never played it due to being an Xbox kid but the story in the LPs kept me invested despite the shit graphics and gameplay, so that’s got to count for something.
    B Tier:
3 - The worst protagonist I’ve ever seen in anything, decent gameplay and world design and might be higher up if Haytham was the main character and modern day wasn’t so fucked but it is what it is.
Altair’s Chronicles - Just an average DS game. Not much else to say lol.
    C Tier:
Unity - Awful story, buggy as hell but the gameplay really has something to recommend and Paris is such a beautifully designed city. I’d love it if it weren’t an AC game.
Origins - Love Bayek, hate the RPG elements, wish we got an Assassin story beside “Hey, maybe we should be good guys” five minutes before the end. Desperately needed a sequel but too late now.
    D Tier:
Syndicate - Joke of a game and doesn’t belong in this franchise but also not awful and I have fun playing it.
Rogue - Love the setting and new additions but the missed opportunity to tell a Templar story drags it from what could have been an A Tier game all the way here. Easily the one that disappointed me the most.
Valhalla - It’s complicated. HATE the gameplay, decent setting, and appreciate that it tries to be an AC game… it just doesn’t try hard enough.
    E Tier:
2: Discovery - Just a bit shit innit.
Chronicles (all 3) - Appreciate the storytelling in China but was phenomenally bored by these ones. If anything, it just makes me angrier we never got a Shao Jun mainline game.
    F Tier:
    Odyssey - No.
