With regards to my comments on O&S, I’m not married to the take, it was just my thoughts after my initial play through.
Obviously people have some strong thoughts against what I said and that’s fair, I appreciate the input! I don’t even think it’s a bad fight, I had fun. I just felt that sometimes the fight was a little bullshit, with how Ornstein would dash to you, sometimes glitching out on the pillars, it didn’t feel entirely perfectly designed as a lot of the singular bosses had prior to that point. But I still found it fun, and it’s still leagues above other game’s boss design, I more so meant in contrast to earlier fights in DS it felt a little less refined.

As someone that has played these games to death and beaten them at level 1, I 100% agree with you. Not to say that this the standard that a boss should be judged on, but at level 1 you tend to spend a lot of time with these bosses and learn all their intricacies and their quirks. O&S is bullshit, mainly due to ornstein's incredibly buggy charge move, its rare that it doesn't get caught either a pillar or smough, causing the animation to bug out, but it has a few other issues too. I still like the fight though despite its flaws, but I think most people are attached to it for the atmosphere and buildup to the encounter, it really does feel like the climax of the game and it is a massive difficulty spike so understandably a lot people probably feel a sense of pride for making it past them. Great video by the way.

I think you really missed out on the story in my opinion. The story of Dark Souls is one of perseverance. We are undead, and have to make the pilgrimage to defeat Gwen. We are not the first, and will not be the last. Ever item you pick up comes from a corpse. The corpse of an undead who made it further than you, or the items are from defeated enemies. The enemies are NPCs who went hollow. Soilders, thieves, clerics, they all have a story, a life. The story is incredibly meta because every player to ever pick up the game leaves an impact. If they stopped playing after 30 minutes, you can interpret that as them “going hollow” and turning into an enemy in the game. This also happens with NPCs. There are also NPCs who want you to win and encourage you, the same way players leaving helpful messages, join during bosses, and making real world guides. We are all undead, with a grand quest. Not every player made it to the end, so what pushed you to finish? For me it was bring an end to the misery of that world, and seeing if I could truly make it to the end. It was hard, but in a way it mirrors real life. How people in the real world lose their sanity and end up on the streets. Its up to me to hold it together and make it.
    Besides that great video chief

I do agree with you, I just felt I was unable to properly comment on the story without feeling completely out of my depth. I think the game says a lot and I think it does it eloquently. I said what I could but I need more experience before I could attempt to dive into it properly, there’s so many nuances.
Really great comment, said it all very well.

Good comment except that's not the truth of the story. Humans are being fed the false story of pilgrimage and fire linking by Gwyndolin. Gwyn is terrified of the imminent age of humanity, and is using us to prolong his age of light.

Awesome to see how much it clicked with you. I 100% agree that the world design is one of the best parts of the game (and for me personally, it's still FromSoftware's best game in that regard). The other part of the game that you didn't really touch on but that made a huge impact with me when I first played it, is the music. The score/soundtrack is absolutely incredible across the entire game, and it really helps to elevate both the subtle atmosphere and the more epic moments. The menu theme, Firelink Shrine theme, and Gwyn's theme are my personal favourites. I can't imagine Gwyn's fight without that theme, it's just perfect.

I love the confidence of the Souls games, the fact that you have to engage and play on their level is something that's hard to pull off in a satisfying way. The slow trudge towards mastery, towards becoming your own boss, is a large part of what took me a while to click with, especially after playing a lot of games where success is just handed to you. Dark Souls 3 was the first souls game I played all the way through, just before Elden Ring came out, and that's where the formula clikced for me which allowed me to totally fall in love with Elden Ring making it one of four games I've spent 100+ hours on. Now that your opinion has changed on them it'll be interesting to see what you think of the other games.

Even better if you get into the rabbit hole of learning the lore and the story (along with hidden stuff) then I think you're really gonna love your time man. Especially in the case of elden ring and bloodborne, the character arcs and their backgrounds are fascinating.

A word of advice with with Dark Souls 2 though: I know the feeling of "obligation" to finish these games, but take it from me when I say that if you find yourself not enjoying Dark Souls 2-just quit. It won't reward you in the end unless you actively enjoy it from start to finish, and you can look past mechanics that don't work properly. Regarding Dark Souls 2.
IF you don't like it I have a suggestion for you.
*Its troubled development (not made by Miyazaki who was busy making Bloodborne) led to many compromises with the controls feeling off, the lighting and hit boxes are a mess, sound effects are a step back, the dodge/roll & Estus drinking/item use (WTF!) mechanic is tied to a vague STAT (called ADP) & the enemy placement is terrible with gank squads the new norm - breaking away from the methodical combat and carefully curated placement/experience you would have come to expect ala DS1.
IF you too find yourself repulsed by DS2 -- I highly recommend a mod for it --
    Seeker of Fire:
It fixes the controls + rolling to emulate DS1/DS3 (making it static & equip load based), adjusts enemy placement, fixes the sound effects, hit boxes and much of the lighting + jank and bugs (eg actually allowing you to walk and drink estus like DS1) and incomplete/wrong map design (mostly cosmetic to actually make certain things make sense now) of the normal version in a very tasteful way while retaining the core experience (+ some nice surprise add-ons).
I absolutely love it now (probably more than DS3) and will never play the godawful normal version again. I know lots of people like it and may consider this scrilegious but whatever. Regardless, there is a lot to love about DS2 and it would be a shame to miss out on it in one form or another.
TLDR -- Normal DS2 SOTFS = bad: Seeker of Fire mod fixes most problems I have with it.

Otherwise I think it still holds up as a great boss fight that fromsoft hasn’t truly been able to master again (with a few exceptions like Shadows of Yarnham). Their attempt at this (duo boss fight) in Elden Ring was terrible. Godskin duo was literally just two really agressive enemies trying to hit you at the same time (instead of one fast and one slow)

Appreciate the kind words and support. I think while I could split it into two parts, when it's that long and also time stamped, I might as well drop it all at once. Those who want to watch it in parts can and those who want to raw dog the entire thing at once can also do that 😂

Very nice video. I always love hearing people's thoughts on DARK SOULS as its a game that means a lot to me.
I definitely agree on basically everything you said. But I don't understand your Ornstein and Smough fight. It was kind of baffling to hear, you mention how they wouldn't be good on their own which you're right about. But that's a good thing. It's a duo fight the first phase is the memorable part they synch up well with each other. Ornstein constantly pressuring you but on his own leaving damage opportunities to exploit. But if you overextend the Smough you've been ignoring punishes you. You compare it to the Shadows of Yarhnam a fight I also enjoy but doesn't really match the greatness of O and S. I'm not really trying to change your mind just present my own perspective.
I don't want this to just be a rant comment so I'll end with saying DS1 got me out of a kinda rough spot in life. I wasn't suicidal or anything thankfully. But aimless was the best way I could describe it. I was never able to finish what I started whether it be games or hobbies. I never had a single player game that really engaged me on its merits of story alone. So DS1 was revitalising I couldn't look away the whole game was magnificent even if the latter section was less so. So I love DS1 and really enjoyed hearing you talk about it.
Sorry about the long comment also DS2 is really good when it isn't pretending to be bad.

Yeah I mean, I get what the fight is going for, I appreciate everyone else’s perspective, it just felt very unrefined despite having a sound concept, I felt myself being unfairly treated when I hadn’t at any other points before or after that fight. I’m not steadfast in that opinion though, just my feelings after one playthrough.

I think the oddest thing about DS1 is how open it feels. For example in my first playthrough I 5 shot the bell gargoyles because I got a Black Night Sword and upgraded it with Andre. I fought Sif before the Bell Gargoyles because that was the order I found them.
So for me I blitzed the game on my first playthrough. The only bosses who killed me more than once were the bed of chaos in the base game and Kalameet in the dlc. Everyone else including some bosses that are pretty legendary for being tough like Manus, O and S, Artorias and more not really hard at all. I feel kinda split on this. Orphan of Kos destroying me for 20+ attempts, Midir slaying me for hours, the Fume Knight, Demon of Hatred, etc. The challenge in the other games felt more designed to be overcome whereas DS1 there wasn't much to overcome. Oddly enough DS1 was my first Souls game too so I would say to me at least, DS1 is the easiest souls game by a decent margin.
Great game, but to me it is one of the weaker from soft games due to the second half of the game.

Ornstein and Smough s not bullshit, you just had wrong strategy. Use pillars, be patient, don't lock on enemy, run a lot, and this fight is easy.

I would highly recommend replaying dark souls with a guide for some of the quests. It's worth it to see Siegmeyer and Solarie's questline to completion. Even Lautrec completing his quest once. Also unlocking the alternative Sif cutscene. It just adds so much more to the story, and it's cool FromSoft added all these details for players to find.
And I know others have recommended Sekiro and so would I. The combat I guess you could say is a bit more like Bloodborne so it might be more for you, but also like an aggressive dance between two people and takes parrying to a whole new level. There is no other game with Sekiro's level of combat in my opinion.

Definitely will do, I want to go back in and experience all the bits I missed out on for sure. And Sekiro is on the list, I’ll play that one eventually.

Not a game for me unfortunately. I love the idea but i get frustrated and disheartened too easily so I'd just end up hating myself for a while. I'm glad it exists though.

Dark Souls is made to be broken by the player. So it's really up to the player how prepared they want to be for fights.

@@joshpasco6083I can't really explain, or more accurately, I can't articulate it properly. In broad terms it has to do with how DS3 is actually quite different from DS1. So he will, most likely, expect more of the same bosses, level design, design philosophy etc in DS3 as in DS1. He will probably say that its just not the same, or that it misses the point, something along those lines, I guess. This is purely speculative tho, so idk, maybe he'll like it.

I really hope not, I've heard lots of good things about DS3 and how it plays with the themes of the first. I know no game comes close to the intricate interconnected world as the first game but I'm content with that, Bloodborne was tremendous despite not building it's world like DS1, it doesn't have to.

I reached 17:05 and hearing that "Ornstein and Smough don't compliment each other" made me facepalm myself out of disbelief. Nothing could be harder from the truth (and many others will tell you that). I do not know how it happened, but you somehow robbed yourself of one of the best fights of the entire Souls series (and, thus, one of the best boss battles in gaming). Please. PLEASE. You need to correct that at your earliest convenience. Not just for your credibility as a Souls player, but for your very soul.

I mean, they were fine, it’s a fine fight, I enjoyed winning, but I didn’t feel like it was particularly fair all the time. Maybe in concept it’s better but in its execution it can feel messy, at least it did for me.
