  • Assassin’s Creed is a franchise that I have a love-hate relationship with. It includes some of my absolute favorite gaming moments, as well as some of my most spectacular mald-outs… sometimes they even happen in the same game.
To prepare myself for the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, I embarked on a journey to play every single game in the AC series, including many of the obscure spin-off titles like Freedom Cry and Liberation. In this video, we’re going to do rapid-fire reviews of every single Assassin’s Creed game. I’ll also be ranking each title to determine my favorite game in the series.
FTC DISCLOSURE - Ubisoft provided me with a review code for Assassin's Creed Mirage. So I didn't buy the game myself. However, they did not pay me to make a review and playing the game a few days early didn't affect my opinion of the game.

I've gotta say, I fully agree with the position of those two games, even though I've been a long-time AC fan and started with the original back in the day.
Odyssey had so much attention to detail, great storytelling, and some of the best side quests of any game I've played. I think it only gets so much hate because it's different, but if you ignore that, it's a damn good game in its own right.
On the other hand, Brotherhood always felt like it was half-baked, and it never really got me invested into the storyline. The world also felt very empty for my liking.

Honestly for me, Odyssey is the game where I'd apply the "good game, bad AC game" description that he used for Black Flag.
Odyssey honestly feels like it should've been part of a separate IP, so does Valhalla. The mechanics and story are so separated from the rest of the series that it feels like they wanted to make a new IP, but wanted the guaranteed income the AC name would give them.

@@danielhounshell2526 I honestly struggle to find anything about the game I actually like. I hate the characters, combat (damage sponges), level scaling, story, it's way too long and as an AC game I didn't have much hoping for it since it takes place before the hidden ones actually exist. As a long time AC fan it felt like this game shits all over the lore of the franchise and don't get me started on how they portrayed the Isu.
I know many people say it's one of the best (which is fine) but I doubt many of those people were ever big AC fans to start with.

    • @5forwards

As someone who has been playing ac since the beginning, odyssey is my favorite aswell. Being a longtime fan doesn't determine each one's preferences. As a game, ac odyssey is an S tier game. Odyssey is an open world RPG game. What it does in that regard, it does so extremely well. As an AC game, I can understand that it deviates a lot from the main games (so does origins and valhalla ofc), therefore the criticism is valid on that - but that doesn't make it any less than a masterpiece of a game. Just not everyone's cup of tea.

    • @nikidelvalle

@@danielhounshell2526 Odyssey is the one game I'd actually describe as bad game, bad AC game. The game is filled to the brim with the most empty, vapid content imaginable. It is the most padded game I have ever played to completion and because of the way the level scaling works there's no way to escape it. It is soul-sucking, repetitive, garbage. That and it totally trashes the series lore. The other games all have their qualities no matter how far they deviate from the series formula, Odyssey doesn't. The story is garbage, the characters are garbage (especially the completely lifeless protagonist, no amount of good voice acting can save them from having zero personality), the combat starts fine but never evolves in a meaningful way, the stealth sucks, the naval combat sucks, the side-quests are garbage, the world is just an endless stretch of empty lifeless terrain, etc.
This has nothing to do with me being slavish to the series tradition either btw, Valhalla does absolutely everything Odyssey was trying to do miles better, it's a great game and easily the best of the RPG trilogy (I do understand why people struggle to see that though after Origins and Odyssey kind of exhausting the format such that it's hard to see the massive improvement Valhalla makes to the formula).

This is really useful because you give such a honest rundown of everything! I got into the series through Unity after most of the bugs were fixed (but most of the Co-op missions were still hella bugged) and absolutely loved it. I agree with what you said about the main hand weapon fighting - it is really janky and Arno has hardly any HP. Although instead of putting me off the game (I never liked melee fighting) it just steered me towards using stealth kills and pistols entirely. Some of the pistols in the mid to late game are really cool, especially with the quick fire function. It did mean early game was quite trying for me because I didn’t have cool assassination skills yet or any good pistols. However those segments trained me to be super stealthy just to survive and it paid off massively in the late game when I was working towards those accomplishments of taking out every enemy without getting spotted even once. Those trophies were probably the most enjoyable parts of Unity for me! I then played Odyssey, and despite being a RPG and greek myth fan, I really struggled to like it. I think this is mostly due to the huge reduction of parkour and stealth compared to Unity. While revolutionary Paris was beautiful and brimming with life, most of Odyssey felt like riding endlessly through the countryside… I think I would have enjoyed it more if I hadn’t played Unity first. But having watched this, I know now that I should play Syndicate next, and also the Ezio trilogy! Thank you a lot. Subscribed because of your ME content but enjoying the latest BG3 and AC videos too.

  • @matthewburton6360
    @matthewburton6360 8 месяцев назад +8

Solid reviews Dan! In unity you can 100% avoid getting shot by rolling out of the way. Not sure how you missed that. I love that Odyssey is your #1. Its one my favorites because you can really make cool decisions and affect the game in such a big way. I know a lot of people complain about not getting the insta kill assassinations which does kinda suck, but like you said there's so much abilites and armor pieces that you can have a great stat build to do those things. One thing I really love about Brotherhood and Revelations are the mentoring of your assassin's and doing the mentor missions. Really adds depth to Ezio's character.

Of the 3 new RPG games, I'd also say Odyssey was my favorite. I actually only played up to Brotherhood when it was current content and I loved it at the time. I played the 3 RPG games and loved Origins and Odyssey. Valhalla was definitely fun but it was just way too long and got incredibly boring for parts.
Working my way back through the games in between, beat 3 and recently beat 4 and started FC. I actually liked the story of 3 and the villains were incredible. Black Flag might be an all time favorite for me, even outside of AC games. I did hate the tailing missions though.
But anyway, yeah I have to agree with your love of Odyssey. I loved the characters and it was just a super fun game, and the views and environment were incredible to look at. And other than, well, any part of the story involving Layla, it was actually a really fun story.

Building up that homestead just hit different. Anyway yeah I’m pretty sure Unity and Rogue released same day because Ubisoft felt the NEED to have unity be basically one of the launch titles within the year for the Xbox one ps4 or something along those lines. Definitely a bad idea as we saw but still happened nonetheless.

it's not the historical accuracy people are complaining about, it's the weird superpowers that were ass-pulls that bother players. Machine guns, tanks, and wrist guns while inaccurate, at least they exist in more recent times, whereas teleportation does not. Having a piece of eden used to mean a lot and be the cause and justification for the more technologically advanced/magical stuff. Nowadays everyone is a god/demi god with weird supernatural powers.

Don't agree with your opinions, but AC is a series I like to come back to periodically. The Kenway Saga is probably my favorite portion because of the characters, the wide range of freedom and activities, and the cool fighting mechanics. And you get to play as two Templars and the best female Assassin. Best all around experience if you ask me. Didn't like the direction they took the franchise later though. The rpg stuff just seemed bloated and unnecessary.

So I guess I'm the "jagoff" (?) in the comment section who actually enjoyed Revelations more than 2 and Brotherhood. I just loved the strong colours, vibrant beautiful costumes and of course the amazing music. Oh, and to make matters worse I actually enjoyed 3. Connor was portrayed as a simpleton, (which is REALLY odd seeing Achilles apparently trained him in philosophy), but he was a feral deadly badass. And I enjoyed the mundane stuff. Oh, and to REALLY out myself as a tasteless asshat, I liked the naval combat in Rogue better than Black Flag. The Morrigan was more fun to navigate.

  • @Milkshakeenthusiast
    @Milkshakeenthusiast Месяц назад

You should try the homestead mission route in AC3. The game doesn't make you play through the homestead missions, hence a lot of ppl rush through the main story. The game doesn't really tell you this to be fair. However a lot of Connor's character is built up from the homestead. A core part of AC 3 is it's homestead counter part. Hopefully that will boost your opinion on AC3 by a little bit 🥺

Nice review there, interesting to see the perspective of a recent player that started out from the latest game first.
I can never rank them or any other games… unless even if a game totally went out of the rail of what it’s predecessors were like.
But I think I can see which one I had more fun editing videos. Despite majority views of the game, I do like AC3.
It’s also fun to see where it fits in the timeline. It’s mingling around multiple games.
Edwards descendant, he’s village is burning when he’s father is away with Shay dealing with Achilles.
Met Achilles when he grew up. He’s time with Aveline and her journey (game) around the same time.
    Other crossovers
Rogue’s finale & Unity’s beginning with a touch mentions of Connor
Love to piece together all the flashbacks in Unity too.
Tried having fun mixing scenes of both Evie and Jacob like they are together.
In moments when they are together storywise.

I will point out the complaint about how spongy and over the top beating the hell out of enemy’s are in AC3 also applies to syndicate I hated how immersion breaking the combat in syndicate was. Also the story of syndicate was such a bore to me. I respect your opinion about these games but I see we view these games in very different ways
    Trash video

Couple of things about the gun enemies.
You can use enemies as human shields in AC3. There's a whole tutorial segment on it while you're playing as Haytham.
The dodge roll in AC Unity dodges gunshots. This is actually preferable to human shields imo, since you don't just have to sit there and take the damage if there are no enemies near you.

Here is my relationship with Assassins Creed.
Started with AC2 and fell in love immediately. Went back to play AC1. Then I played Brother hood and Reveleations.
At this point, this was one of my favorite gaming series. I played AC3 and liked it a lot.
Then I played Black Flag...........🙄. I beat the game, but after that, I didn't touch Assassins Creed for many years.
I briefly played Origins (30 min) and then never touched AC again until Unity.
I was happy again with Unity but I havent finished it yet. I will go back and finish.
I just beat Mirage. It was a fun time.
I have Odyssey just sitting on my system, but i got for $5 on a Super Mega sale. But i dont know if I will ever have downloaded it. Maybe I will play it after I beat Spiderman 2. I will need something to hold me over until FF VII Rebirth.

The choices you get in Odyssey are great, but the game feels so bloated with pretty meaningless side content, and the levelling system means you have no choice but to do a lot of it in order to be high enough level to reach other regions and advance the story. Origins is far more linear, but the side quests actually *felt* like side quests, with storylines, rather than copy-paste content. To each their own, I suppose - Odyssey is great despite its flaws.

No way Big Dan's doing AC now too you love to see it! AC used to be my favourite games franchise, with Mass Effect my second favourite.
AC2 is still my favourite game of all time with ME2 my second favourite, so it's great to see what used to be my 2 world combine.
I don't know about your wild takes on not liking AC Brotherhood, but enjoying Odyssey for some strange reason, but for you Big Dan I respect your opinion so I'll let it slide.
If you want to keep doing games I love you should try out Dishonored!

I started my journey with AC II and I am glad I did, but now that AC MIrage is on sale on Epic I might just get back to the good old gameplay. But before that I need to overcome my fear of completing the first Assassins Creed to fulfil my journey for it's upcoming games.

I think mirage's performance is related to CPU. Following some advice i never wantes to follow, i disables e-cores and hyperthreading in my bios and now the game runs really smooth. I need to do more testing but this was an issue odyssey faced aswell altho that game still has issues.

I played AC3 on the Wii U completely in handheld mode and loved it.
I then played Black Flag and loved it just as much, but kept failing a mission where I had to sail from the bottom of the map to the top because I kept getting caught by enemy ships and one would eventually kill me which set me back to the start to do it all over again.
I didn't play another until Valhalla. I was loving it until I got to a point where I would have to grind for 20-30 hours to reach a level to do the next raid. I just didn't want to do that so I stopped playing.
I then started Unity and so far it's been great but slightly weird with the movements. I'm going to try to finish it and then go back to AC1 or maybe replay 3 or Black Flag... Or maybe Origins, idk. I haven't decided.

I'm sorry but your comparison of Basim teleporting to Altair CREATING the Hidden Gun with knowledge from the Apple and Leonardo's war machines is stupid since as long as you have the required knowledge and materials available it's possible for realism. I can agree with Evie's cloak but her skill literally says that she's blending with her surroundings that it makes her seemingly invisible.

Through out the franchise I'd say unity is my favorite, sure it takes patience to get past the jank, but after that its a lot of fun to play, and I find Arno to be such a compelling character to such a disapointing story, the combat system the best imo as how grounded it is and challenging to use as it is mainly convince the player to use stealth. Also the parkour is alot of fun

What I got from rougue was, not all templar organizations are evil, and not all brotherhood organizations are morally good. In fact sometimes the assassins are worse than the templars. I think achilles realized that and taught Conor proper. Then in unity arnos master was so convinced templars are bad and the brotherhood is good he forgot to separate the order from the person, Arno was raised by a very generous and sympathetic Templar. It’s actually cool how they were handling the story lines from game to game. And then they went back in time and it’s black and white again

This is frankly quite understandable from Bioware RPG fans. As a pure gaming experience Odyssey is fine if you are a completionist and don't plan on playing the game for multiple times. But Odyssey suffers from two most major issues.
One is that it's much less enjoyable for AC fans looking for any historic or even half historic immersion - a dagger that makes killed enemies disappear, or arrows that can change directions mid-flight, much more so than origins (despite origins having sniper rifle bows that shoot plagues).
The other is the level system makes the game much more grindy and follow on a same path similar to Witcher 3, you could say the mythology trilogy tried to copy Witcher 3's success but the level scaling of TW3, ACO (both), DOS2 and etc are the worst flaws in otherwise phenomenal games. Artificial advantages are given to levels alone and even items are level scaled.
In say RPGs like Fallout New Vegas, Deathclaws have monstrous stats but they don't get artificial advantage because of levels alone. A deathclaw is a deathclaw, not level 50 deathclaw vs level 1 deathclaw. Not AC mythology higher level enemies who have enough HP to survive assassination attacks. You can buy the best gun money can buy from GRA shop at level 1 if you've got enough money, similar to AC4 and ACU and unlike ACOs.
