I feel like I'm in the minority of people who really liked AC Unity. Story was well paced (a tiny bit slow), very well thought out, and nicely tied into various historical events. The world design was one of the best EVER, coupled with great graphics and atmosphere. Plus, Arno was a pretty great character, I was a big fan.

Finally, someone who understands what people mean when they see the word "history" next to a video game title.
I swear, 99% of the time that you see that word used in a RUclips video about a particular game, it is merely just a few gameplay vids of each title in the series and nothing else. No commentary, no voiceover, no actual "HISTORY!!!" Hell, most of the time, other than the title of the game, there's not even any text info about the game.
They basically do the least amount of work that they barely even meet the qualifications to even be called a video. You on the other hand sir, have knocked it out of the park and give viewers the very thing that they clicked the link for. And for that, I say thank you.

You say Altaïr was dull and uncharismatic, while for me he was the best character of all.
Altaïr had a mystery and code around him.
I felt much more curious and wondrous when playing as Altaïr.
He was the epitomization of the the assassins.
I felt like I was playing something larger than myself, while Ezio's core story felt more like a soap opera full of clichés, especially the playboy attitude.
This attitude was everything the assassins weren't, unresponsible and driven by primitive emotions.
I could not take Ezio seriously when he said the phrases of the assassins.
For me, Ezio felt much more shallow.
"We work in the dark, to serve the light" felt dishonest when Ezio said it, "I work in the dark, to serve MY light" would have suited him better.
Don't misunderstand me, they were great games and very interesting.
But the mystical journey I had with Altaïr was never recreated in the whole series.

Sorry to butt in so randomly, but I just have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with your comment. I simply cannot see how so many people see Altaïr's character or story as dull or uncharismatic, to me up to this day Altaïr's story is still my favorite storyline in the franchise. I started with Brotherhood originally, so Ezio was my first Assassin. When I had time enough to spare I went back to the older ones, and I have to say that in AC2 especially, Ezio was insufferable to me at times. I can definitely appreciate his character development by the end of Revelations, and I do see how Ezio and Altaïr's circumstances were extremely different - Altaïr was born into the Order and was in a way a part of it from a young age, while Ezio only found out about the Order after the beginning of AC2. Keeping that and the emotional strain the death of most of his family left on him in mind it made it understandable that he needed a bit of time to fall into the role of an Assassin. But what turned me off from him was the initial first impression the game went with already. Both, Ezio and Altaïr displayed pride and arrogance at the start of the game, but the effects that follow afterward are completely different. Altaïr's arrogance is the immediate cause of Kadar's death, Malik's permanent injury which basically tears his Assassin career away from him forever, and the siege of Masyaf with a number of other deaths stacking up. Ezio, on the other hand, is allowed to bask in his pride and arrogance after the glorious victory after Federico shows up.
From the very first cutscene in AC1 I was invested in the characters present. When I returned to Masyaf, the victory at the siege didn't feel like a victory at all, and in my opinion, Malik's VA did an amazing job portraying his grief and anger at the loss of his brother. At the time, Altaïr might have still displayed some of his arrogance, but as a player, I felt all the guilt on his behalf. So the game clearly was doing something right with its portrayal, at least for me. The same investment continued through the game, where I would physically shrink away whenever I entered Jerusalem Bureau and Malik started to yell at Altaïr. I loved watching both of them slowly develop and meet each other halfway until they finally buried the hatchet and finally fully started to trust each other and formed a deep friendship. These feelings were only strengthened when I returned from Arsuf (that in itself had an amazing effect on me with its atmosphere), already mentally and emotionally drained, only to walk into the unsettling atmosphere that was Masyaf and having to kill my own allies. And who shows up with his support group but Malik. I was never happier to see him, and I really felt like he had Altaïr's back at that point. I also loved his response to Altaïr's greeting - Safety and peace. In the beginning, it was "Your presence here deprives me of both." By the end, it changed to "Your presence here will deliver us both." It was a really simple line, but it showed just how much newfound trust and respect he had for Altaïr.
Revelations then did a great job with the memories expanding on Altaïr and Maria, which is another relationship I wholeheartedly enjoyed. To me, Altaïr's story was by far the most tragic, especially in his later years, where he lost his son, his best friend, his wife and the Order all in one day, simply because of Abbass' grudge. I could never really forgive Abbass as a character, especially after Altaïr worked so hard to keep the Order afloat after the disaster in AC1. It really did hurt watching him be chased out by his own, and seeing him reclaim the Order was all the more satisfying. To me, he really was a true Assassin and even after he was chased out by his own Order and grieving the many many losses, he never really stopped working with the best interests for the Order. The only thing I'm sad I never got to see again was Malik in the role of Altaïr's advisor. Especially if he kept his firey personality.
I'm not sure about the general consensus on the Secret Crusade novel since I don't really see it discussed often, but I really did love it. It was a beautiful retelling of the story with some more insight into Altaïr's thoughts and made some key moments which were already powerful in the game all the more powerful and emotional, especially with the end when Malik's son helps Altaïr reclaim the Order through peaceful means, a small detail that allowed Malik to come through for Altaïr one last time through his son.
TL;DR - At least to me personally, Altaïr's story was a rollercoaster of emotions. His story is many things, but bland, uninspired and uncharismatic are not one of them. I loved almost all the characters in it, even the ones who died early such as Kadar were given presence and meaning through the feelings of grief and loss of the characters, and didn't feel unimportant, even though we as the player barely knew them. Altaïr to me was a true Assassin who reached the truer, deeper understanding of the code. He may not have been my first Assassin, but he was indeed the Assassin I was the most invested in by far. Also sorry for the wall of text, whoever read so far, I hope it was at least worth your time :)

Both are great protagonists. Ezio needed alot of character development to be loved while Altair’s mysterious character was enough to attract fans even if he had only one game.
If AC revelations didnt expand on Ezio’s character the way it did, I wouldn’t have taken Ezio seriously, especially with how he started out in AC 2.
However in Altair’s case, one game was enough for me to love his character yet i felt like wanting more. He always gave me a very mysterious vibe which i absolutely love about him. Altair was the most assassin-like assassin in the series.

I used to agree, but Origins & Odyssey are way and above better than anything that came before them. There's more depth to both the stories and the game play, there's more diverse armour that offers benefits to play style, the worlds are bigger and more detailed, the quests are more varied... the Ezio games aren't even in the same league even though they're great in their own right.

I feel that AC Odyssey strays too far from the more realistic elements of the original line up.
A lot of people like that, but not me. Even Origins doesn't stray too far from being believable.
Some like the combat, but I feel it is a little....overdone with animation. Original AC had a realistic feel to the combat, but with Odyssey, you can slash and stab opponents multiple times with your power move, and not have them even flinch afterwards. I don't like that. I wish one good, well placed stab or slash meant death again. You know, like an assassin.

It was just getting repetitive. It was the same thing in different clothing. And the combat was so overly simple.
I like that they have opened up the story to a larger world and actually put the technology to good use.
If they didn't adapt they would have died.

Also reliving the memories of Altair felt so good especially the things which were not explained in AC1. And a mature Ezio with his great quotes added alot to the experience.

I remember playing AC III, I was 14 at the time. I was so excited for the native american protagonist that I got confused and really nervous because the Haytham-Storyline took so long. It got to a point where I was thinking I bought the wrong game lmao. Good times

Lmao! The same thing happened to me. I was wondering if I had the right game.
The moment you realise you were playing as a templar the whole time was though , that got me!

    1) AC 2
    2) AC 4 Black Flag
    3) AC Revelations
    4) AC Brotherhood
    5) AC 3
    6) AC 1
Haven't played Rogue, Unity, Syndicate, or Odyssey yet. I'm in the middle of Origins so I decided not to rank it yet, but it's definitely going to be near the top. I'm loving every second of it and was not expecting it to be as good as it is. Makes me super excited to play Odyssey

Loved Syndicate & would love a remaster/remake with general improvements. Especially a better combat system or at least more combat animations.
Also don't understand why reviewers claim the story is 'forgetable'. It's great & one of only a couple AC games stories i remember fondly.

I am getting into the franchise for the first time, so thank you for making this video as it gives me context and a timeline from A to Z. I think the initial 2007 game still looks amazing in 2021.

I bought Syndicate when it realeased, and I honestly grew pretty bored, as I had been playing AC games yearly so I forgot about it. A few weeks ago I found it again, and I can't express how much I'm enjoying it. Jacob's snark and cockiness is just so fun, and it contrasts so well with Evie's intelligence and finesse. The world is filled with stuff to do, and i'm finding myself really invested in Jacob and Evie. I haven't played AC since 2015 and It's like I'm having that wonder the AC games gave me as a kid again, so Syndicate might just become one of my favourites.

In Revelations they added a cool system, where you could assign recruits to bases and have them govern them. The Templars would also try and take back territory through battles, where you had to lead and place defended to stop them. There was a lot of additional features, they just kept the old ones very similar to before.

AC featuring the Mongolian empire. I personally loved playing brotherhood because of how much history was accurate .

True, during Kublai Khan regime, mongol conquered assassin Castle in middle east.

@@guilemaigre14 have u tried the new ones? i too was skeptic, but have grown to love odyssey, far beyond the others, imo its def worth a try. i played all the AC's, and the worst imo was revelations+origins, but odyssey was very nice.

I watched the Movie on Netflix and I am really intrigued about the series.....I can't thank you enough because you helped me decide if I should or not play and what games to miss out on. This was very educational and I'm glad I had the sudden urge to watch the movie. I'm forever gonna remember this video and the history of the game. Thank you!

16:40 really? Rev is my favorite ezio game gameplay wise. Playing ac2 and ac rev back to back, Rev is so much smother and sleeker imo
