    In the comics Ulysses had an extremely abusive relationship with Elsa. He once took her out on a bot chummed up the water and threw her in to see if she could survive. In the comics Elsa normally teams up with Deadpool, Wolverine, and Black Knight. She’s also a member of the Midnight Suns.

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +16

      Oh no way!!! We assumed it was abusive since it was insinuated she 'ran away' and didn't return for 20 years, so that was the biggest giveaway but we didn't know it was this bad!
      Hopefully we see more of Elsa, now that Deadpool is coming out, Wolverine is coming back and the Black Knight was introduced, we should be all set to see more of her!!!

    I too loved the transformation scene. I was even more impressed to read that the director didn't use CGI during that scene. It was all in-camera effects.
    They traded out actors in different stages of transformation as the strobe light flashes to create the shadows on Elsa.

      @@OfficialMediaKnights yes! The effects are incredible. Here's Giacchino's full quote: ""That's not a visual effect, that shot. That was all done in-camera and that took months to design and figure out how we were going to do it, but Joe Farrell, our visual effects supervisor, was incredible in helping put that together. But that is almost exactly as I storyboarded that moment, exactly that... so wherever we could do practical, in-camera effects, we did it, and I would say there [are] a ton of them in there, you just would never even know." "Ted" as in Theodore "Ted" Sallis, Man-Thing's human name before he got mutated. He probably prefers to be called that because that's the only piece of his former life that he has, and he wants to hold on to the only thing left that reminds him of his lost humanity.

    Great reaction, guys! Here's something I loved about this special that I feel Giacchino understood that so many modern directors seem to overlook when attempting make love letters to classic monster movies like this. The real horror in those old movies is not in the number of scares or kills, or the shock and blood and gore. The real horror in those old films lies in the tragedy that befalls the lead character who is a monster, or becomes a monster. Many of the classic monster movies are based on old novels from the 19th century, and those stories are steeped in tragedy, which is where the true horror comes from. The old monster films made sure to incorporate that element, and I find that is often missed in the throwback types of horror flicks made today. Giacchino understood that tragedy aspect and brought it out in our lead's performance. Gael Garcia Bernal's acting carries that element of personal tragedy with him. I loved it!

    • @OfficialMediaKnights
      @OfficialMediaKnights  Год назад +9

      Absolutely true! The tragedy of not being able to avoid your true nature and that nature being something that could end up hurting innocent people is a theme that always up the stakes when included in horror. I’m glad this felt like a movie of the era! 😃 thank you so much for your support!

    Man-Thing's power is based on human emotion. Depending on how YOU are feeling, that's how he responds to you. If you're chilled, he is friendly, if you're scared, angry or aggressive, he secretes a poisonous acid that turns anything it touches into a charred skeleton.

    Aside from whatever implications we assumed by the presence of the "TVA" (who turned out to just be guards) in the trailer, there's nothing to suggest that this story takes place in a different timeline or universe than our main MCU continuity. In fact, in the mausoleum there are dates on the tombs that (I think) run all the way up to the 1980's... maybe even later.
    With the Avengers being referenced in the intro, I think it's safe to assume this is the 616. And the Timeline Order on Disney+ lists this as happening after Love and Thunder.
    I think both of these things are very important, because it means that Jack, Ted, and Elsa are now in the toybox for future MCU projects. Interfacing with Moon Knight or Black Knight or Blade. Joining up with Midnight Sons. Using Man-Thing for crazy multiverse stories. Facing off with Doctor Strange or Agatha. Et cetera.

    Remarkably insightful reactions on the parts of both of you. So good to see a couple reaction where the reactions and insights are split pretty evenly between the two of you! Some fine insights into the Marvel world as well. Most impressive!
    That film feel you kept referring to is most accurate. Moody blacks and whites, odd angles, large sets, fog etc etc. These are all aspects of the German Expressionism style Universal used back in the 1930s and 40s for their Classic Monster films. Even the first appearance of Jack Russel and Werewolf by Night (Marvel Spotlight #2) copies the poem from the post-1941 Universal films "Even a man who is pure in heart and says his prayers by night. May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms and the moon is full and bright." (I say "post 1941" since the original Wolf Man film from 1941 had a last line that read "When the autumn moon is bright."
    ANYWAY, a fantastic reaction! Looking forward to delving into your past catalogue!

I (Denise) learned quite early on in my discovery of my passion for filmmaking that German expressionism was a HUGE influence in many genres, particularly in horror, which was one of the reasons I'd mentioned 'The Cabinet of Dr Caligary', the effects of which still trickle on down til this day! Also, loved The Wolf Man, one of my favorite monster movies to date!

    Late to the game but things people never notice: Every now and then you'll see a sort of scratchy circle appear in the top right, then a few moments later it reappears.
    This is a signal to the projectionist in a movie theatre to start the next reel on the other projector. Of course this was digital, and there aren't any reels but it's a brilliant detail for those who know.
    Fun fact: projectionists used to push a coin into a reel near to the middle so that when it was nearly empty the coin would drop and make a noise - just in case the projectionist was nodding off, or reading.

    A little late on this but I just wanted to mention that the soundtrack is one of my favorite parts. Its more or less the Marvel counterpart of The Batman, which was also composed by Giacchino.
    Its pretty similar to it in many ways but this one has more cinematic choirs. Also like The Batman, this one has such a gothic vibe here. Rich and lush at times while also being creepy and ominous. Like the tuba horn part was insane. I also really love those horror tremolo and pizzicato strings. Those give me eargasms every time. Jack's theme is really the highlight here and is almost played the most. On the soundtrack, there are two bonus cues. Both are Jack's are the same but played differently. The first one is played on an acoustic guitar while the second one is a piano version.
    Would love to see Michael Giacchino do more horror related soundtracks. He's more than capable of creating really scary and suspenseful parts well.

    Couple of quick things. The first creature shown in the manuscript {and as a trophy in the Trophy Room} looks like it is meant to be the MCU version of the "lesser" vampires. {The ones not directly connected to Dracula.} The ears look like maybe they going for it to look like Baron Blood. His costume had huge ears like that. So, they might be going for the ears to be actual ears in the MCU.
    After the two-headed creature is shown, the next creature might be Wendigo, which is an actual part of the comics. The big furry creature that Ulysses is fighting with a bow & arrow.

    Hi Again Folkses! I don't want to be a comment hog but wanted to add a bit of comic history on both Werewolf and Man-Thing. In a nutshell, Man-Thing originated as scientist Theodore (Ted) Sallis who, while working on an experiment, ended up in a swamp and turned into Man-Thing. This was in 1971's Savage Tales #1 (a B&W Marvel magazine). Just for the record Swamp Thing had a similar backstory but came out in House of Secrets #92 (some controversy there) a couple of months later. Both characters came long after The Heap, another swamp created man-monster from 1942. Jack Russel first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #2 as Werewolf by Night. His "werewolfery" was inherited from a family curse. He went on to appear in #3 and 4 before yielding to the 1st appearance of the Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider in Spotlight #5. Both Man-Thing and Werewolf by Night got there own titles in the 70s and have appeared in various Marvel titles since.
    BTW - Just noticed that reaction at 15:28 re "That's a big foot!" Just subtle enough! 🤭

  • @DagmarSLNY
    @DagmarSLNY 5 месяцев назад +1

    Ted's full name is Ted Sallis and he is part of the main Marvel Universe. We also know that he exists in the MCU because his face appears as one of the sculpted faces on the Grandmaster's tower in Thor: Ragnarok. He is the hybrid product of science and magic and his primary role is that of the Guardian of the Nexus of Reality, a place that can access all the different possible realities. For most of the Marvel timeline he was a fairly mindless being with instances where he was more sentient as he is in this Werewolf By Night. Based on what the second season of Loki reveals, it is probable that the Man Thing will have a greater role in the MCU.

      It is 616! But I don’t know how much the super soldier serum would be a factor in identifying the universe. Since we have Peggy Carters Captain Carter on the other side of the multiverse. Since Ted is such an exception we do know this story takes place in 616 but it would be an interesting outcome if this Ted is a traveler from a different universe all together that just happen to stay here. Since his powers highly rely on the manipulation of the multiverse.

      Honestly we both really loved it! It’s a solid 9.5 for both of us. The main story was wrapped up nicely although we do believe they could’ve delved into the origins of the Bloodstone or how exactly it works. What universe this is (even though it’s suggested it’s 616) and it felt a bit short. But honestly we’re just nitpicking because we absolutely loved it. Cinematography was great, the score was amazing. The director and composer Michael Giacchino did an absolute marvelous job at utilizing music and mystery in sync with the camera work. And I loved the casting for both Werewolf By Night and Elsa. Gore in the mcu is something we are inviting with open arms specially now that Blade is underway. And it feels like their building the pillars of the Midnight Suns. Cannot wait to see how this will impact the MCU (bloodstone being the possible next big tool they’ll use since there’s only 1 apparently) and of course they saved Man things powers for the juicy next entries.
