- After many requests following my video on building a perfect 3 piece watch collection for under $500, today we cover the same topic, but for under $1000. To make this extra special and fun, we are joined by Marc from Long Island Watch, an expert with extensive watch industry insider knowledge, and a friend of the Urban Gentry channel.
In this episode we pick our top choices from Hamilton, Seiko, Orient, Lorier, Laco and many more, as we put together the best selection we can for the money. We also chat about watch trends, what we love about these watches, what we dislike, what is needed to complete a collection, our own collecting habits, recent acquisitions, and an initial reaction to the new 2020 Rolex releases. So, get your favorite beverage ready, get comfy, and join us for a laidback chat about all things watches.

Mark has a true humility about him that makes me want to buy his watches and it is a treat to see you guys again together on a video. Friendship is one of the keys to a happy life. And a nice watch or two never hurts as well. Take care and stay well. The world needs good-hearted people in all walks of life.
--Michael
I could not agree more, he is a real stand up guy. It's no wonder I have known him for so long since the very early days of this channel. Thank you Michael, you are a real gent, you comment speaks volumes about you. Heres to more good hearted people!
Best regards,
TGV
Well said friend! :D
Michael,
You do know this is a RUclips comment section, don't you? It's okay to post positive and uplifting comments here, but don't run around RUclips doing it on other channels.
Great comment, thanks.
Ian Butler ?
@@michaeledwardlenzi Another key to a happy life is having a sense of humour. Ian was just joking.
I needed this video today, fellas - I can't even begin to explain... familiar and respected faces just hanging out a talking watches. Thanks to you both
Hi there , I have been in Law Enforcement for over 34 years now. I have developed PTSD and was on duty during 911. May I say you two guys have made watch collecting a major part of my life. You two bring a smile to my face, and I really enjoy your videos. Recently I acquired the Rangemaster mechanical, and it has become my on duty watch. Thank you for the smile I get when I watch you two. Oh , say hi to hugo
You guys should do these talk shows every month. This is just hilarious XD
I also recommend buying from Long Island Watch, great customer service. Had an issue with a watch and I had a replacement and a return label less than a week later.
Two of the nicest knowledgeable watch guys online. I wear several Long Island Watch sourced watches. Marc is wonderful to deal with.
Absolutely love these guys together, what a combo.
Love how you include visual illustrations of the watches you're referring to. It really helps me follow along. Excellent work as usual Sir!
The great thing about Seiko is that they managed to produce cool watches beyond the 1970s. Only Omega with the Seamaster 300m in the 1990s can claim anything new. Just around the time Seiko comes out with the modern Alpinist. And then in the 2000s they came out with the SARB line, which I personally think is peak Seiko. Beyond its time, shame they were never sold in the West.
Hugo frightens me now lol. Stay safe TGV.
Whats up with Hugo? Midlife crisis? Atay safe and greetings to you TGV
Hugo is the man
Before watching- I’d choose Orient blue ray, Tissot PR100 automatic, Dan Henry 1962 and a g shock of some kind. I am a little biased- I do own two of them!
Well, what can I say, pure calls all the way, I expected nothing less from you!
Best regards,
TGV
I love how so many of us talk of our collections and then the random G Shock we have. Casio does something right.
I'm stuck, do I buy a dan henry 62 or 64?
@@jamesrocheftw Beautiful watches! I'd definitely like to add one to my collection.
@@theurbangentryIs The Rotary Watches Worth it?
Marc is the best. Nothing but top notch when dealing with Island Watch.
I need a “Long Island Gentry” podcast - just do us all a favor, please!
Maybe this will sound stupid but I was interested to know what 3 watches would you choose with a infinite budget. I guess that if you can only pick 3 between all of them that's hard.
OMG, I love that idea!!!!!!
Genius Carlos, thank you, I will suggest it to Marc,
Best regards,
TGV
Can I be your friend
Lange L082.1?
Great idea
Yes !
"Entschuldigung" - Nailed it TGV
I second that.
Marc is such a great guest on this channel! I really appreciate his insight from the perspective as a watch dealer. That said... I have a gold Flighty and really enjoy it. It is my dress watch and under the sleeve cuff, it is not as noticable as one might expect.
Great and informative discussion.
I will play along and list my $1,000 list :
(Coincidentally, all available from Long Island Watch)
1. Seiko SARB-035: $350 (at least when I purchased several years ago!)
2. Orient Bambino: $160 (specifically 2nd gen cream dial/blue hands)
3. Islander Diver : $300 (take your pick!)
4. Islander ISL-054 "Sinn 556A/Rolex Explorer type": $200 (my newest and one of my favorites)
If I could up the budget a bit I would have to add a Casio G-Shock, specifically model GWM5610-1 solar powered quartz: $130 ( a great and dependable "beater" watch).
Orient listening: "More 17mm straps it is then!"
Great to see those two fantastic gentlemen taking their job seriously and professionally with humor and modesty. Sometimes much needed in this industry. I never forget that a TGV's video (about 2 years ago) kindly and warmly recommended LIW, as one of the most trust able, efficient and kindest online retailers. I have never been disappointed ever since. Thank you!
More of these! The longer the better!
Interviews, collaborations… Simple conversations: MORE!
Do you know where I get my laundry folded and the dishes done… I prop you up right on the tablet in the windowsill and get my chores done.
I mean this as the highest compliment.
This needs to be a regular occurrence. TGV + Mark + TGV's laugh = pure class. Also, this opened my mind to Laco, I'm sold.
This turned out to be hugely entertaining. Two friends just shooting the breeze and having fun.
This has to be the best, most enjoyable video I have seen in ages. It is so, so good to see two guys, who clearly admire and respect each other, just chat about what they are passionate about. “Chapeau” to both of you!
As it happens, with the current world events, I am looking to down-size my current hoard/collection and really appreciate both your views on a smaller collection. Much advice taken!
Kids with no WiFi/games consoles? You have my sympathies, my friend!
Hamilton Khaki Field automatic, gshock mudman, and a hamilton diver
Oh, this was one of the coolest and laidback natural watch talk I've ever seen! So entertaining! A couple of humble guys filled with knowledge.
I just wanted to say that Marc has been handling a warranty issue with a watch I bought from him and he has absolutely been going above and beyond to help me out. Great guy who really cares about his customers.
I was surprised to hear that there is a large movement asking for 38mm time pieces. I thought I was the only one 😃
The success of the bb58 is indicative of this. I see 36-38 making a huge comeback in the next decade
This is my 1st comment EVER on TUG albeit I have been watching the vids for some time. Want to commend on the outstanding collaboration with Mark. You guys are fantastic. Mark is one of my favs too. I'm a certified member of The Time Teller, and you 2 are spoken in high regard especially from me. Wishing you the best!
I enjoyed this video for many reasons. The main reason is seeing two people with passion talking about their subject and enjoyment of it.
Apart from work, two real friends chatting about their passion and giving us really valuable ideas!
Hi Hugo and TGV & Mrc. You just brightened up my evening, gave me some great suggestions - and this for 41 minutes. What else can I wish for? Nice to hear from you. You are the greatest!
Thank you Max, that brightens up my day to hear that.
Onwards, upwards and enjoy the rest of the weekend.
Best regards,
TGV
I have a cheap little Skagen that I love with a 14mm band, maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but it’s sharp and I don’t worry about it. Could not find a strap, and when I did it was almost $50! So I had my friend who’s a leather worker make me one, she’s reusing the buckle and tang and let me pick the leather. I’m so thrilled and can’t wait to get it and put it on my little everyday watch.
You guys are both the best. I could watch you talk watches for hours. Well Done!
Some days are just good. Got back to Baltimore early and the boss said just park the truck. No need to unload.
So how will I spend this free time before picking up my daughter?
Wait. What ? TGV and Marc kicking it, just talking watches?
Excellent .
I started collecting watches a few years ago rather haphazardly (pre- RUclips). TGV's reviews and absolute classiness have influenced my preferences. Mark's Watch and Learns are great.
I'm a blue collar guy so most of my watches have tended to be a hundred bucks or so. When I bought a Bulova lunar pilot, I was like whoa this is starting to get serious. and I'll definitely buy from him . These guys are great.
So fascinating listening to this conversation as someone who has been on the edge of the watch game for a few years. It's giving me the itch.
Gentlemen! Most excellent video and collaboration! As promised, here is a decent comment now that I am out of the jet! Love your picks for the collection, and how you tried to provide some standards for a 3-5 watch collection. I have already far surpassed that, but if I had to narrow it down, it would be easy. I have very similar recommendations. Here are two sets of three watch collections sub $1000.
First set
1. Bernhardt Binnacle Anchor - Sports/Sports dress - $290
2. Seiko Flightmaster or Citizen Skyhawks or Navihawk ( have all of them ...love all of them)- ~$295
3. Orient Bambino - ~$250
Total $835....I’ll buy lunch
Second set
This will probably be hotly contested
1. Steinhart Ocean One (pick your pleasure on model)...yes they are homages....what watch isn’t...they are FANTASTIC pieces with excellent customer service and reliability and amazing prices for what you get..... can serve as sports/ dress casual/ and diver- ~$500
2. Casio G-shock DW-5600 - $65.00
3. Seiko Presage Cocktail Time $338
Total....$903.....I’ll buy drinks
Last one for good measure
1. Tissot PR100 $550
2. Islander (pick your pleasure) 300
3. Vostok Amphibia $75. - why not they are fun
Total- $925....Marc buys drinks !)
Onward and upward, all!
I have both Flighty’s, black and white/blue. Fantastic watches. The yellow hands are perfect for the black. So soothing watching the second hand reset.
Been watching for years... Almost bought a watch from tgv a few years back and he was exactly like you see him here... Thorough and honest... Mark is always a straight shooter too... To see them mostly unedited is a joy because that's what we really relate to! Keep it up guys!
This is really the registry in where I mostly like to see this channel, just watch talking, independently of their price mark and brand, without any elaborated calibers clichés or other similar stuff, almost a return to the origins...👍
Please continue the Q&A's Fed. Other watch RUclipsrs rarely do them, let alone any watch dealers. They're super informative and give us a unique line of communication to you to ask questions about the market, current state of different brands, etc.
Great discussion guys!! Always a good duo .. Almost felt like I was there.. could listen to you guys talk Watches all night!! Some strong little contenders amongst the choices.. Been a very strange year so far , so it’s nice to switch off and get lost in the conversation of Watches!! Keep the collaborations going!! BMJ ENGLAND 🏴
What a good chemistry between you two. I had a laugh.
You got to do this again!
Fantastic!
Just a thought for Marc and other watchmakers... I know the trend is toward smaller watches, but please don't forget us older guys who have a little disposable income now that the kids are off our hands, whose eyesight is not what it once was, and who have put on a few pounds - we still love and want the "bigger"watches! Keep up the good work :)
Fantastic video. Really like these videos with guests. Very interesting discussion. I do love both of those gold Seiko. Looking forward to the next video. Keep up the good work.
I agree 4 is a good starting point. For me its been a variety of movts and power sources. Auto, Kinetic, Solar and Quartz. That'll do for now.
TGV!!!! You should make a talking watches podcast!!! Always great content man!
I love it when Hugo calls me “darling” 🥰 great video as always! Super intresting and finaly a good video call that’s not just a screenreccord from skype! Thank you 🙏
Another great video! Would love to see a video looking at best non-Swiss, non-Japanese watches. Because I know those two countries dominate the watch world. Cheers!
I saw a Smith’s field watch online the other day Made in England that looked pretty cool. The Germans make some really sweet watches but most of them aren’t very budget-friendly.
interesting and original idea...non Swiss non Japanese ...THE REST OF THE WORLD WATCHES
I'd be interested in addressing the companies in America producing watches. There are definitely some interesting companies on the horizon (for instance, Brillier Watch Company in AZ).
Really enjoyed this more than Part 1. Great time guys..no pun intended. Either of your collections are more than worry but Gentry...you nailed it! That Neptune can be dressy too. Bond always wore his “Gilts” in formal wear various levels👍✔️
Great collaboration video of two honest and real watch guys appreciated all over the world. Cheers from "Sinn" City, Frankfurt am Main, Germany.
Excellent video. A bit long in the banter, but entertaining, revealing more about the personalities of both Marc and TGV than you get from their other videos. Shows how much both TGV and Marc are down to earth real people who have a common passion. Their choices aren't the ones I would make (and have made) but thought provoking nevertheless regarding the decision criteria. I've purchased from Long Island Watch in the past and it's a super company to deal with.
Hi TGV
An Urban Gentry video just before bedtime here in Denmark - perfect😆
Mark and you make very good and cozy videos together, more of that👍
When it comes to strap sizes...uneven sizes are a pain, and I wouldn’t mention where. Sometimes even to a crazy degree. I’ve got a fine old Wilson watch which I’m planning to give to a friend as a gift. It’s vintage, 36 mm - with a 21 mm strap. I mean, what’s the point? There’s not even an understandable idea with it from a design point of view as far as I can see...
Well, I finally sourced a suitable strap for it...
Keep up the good work👍
Thank you so much Kjeld as always
Wow, 36mm diameter with 21mm lug width?!?! That sounds very unique, you have me intrigued.
Off to gale search I go.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend my friend,
Best regards,
TGV
You two have excellent friendship chemistry. Really enjoyed the series and looking forward to another joint video.
I think that would be a bad move if seiko discontinued the flightmaster honestly. I love mine its a great watch. Its my beater watch and has held up to anything.
Thank you TGV for providing excellent information on watches and introducing me to Mark and Long Island Watch. Thanks to Mark for providing wonderful collection of quality watches, spectacular customer service and a wonderful safe buying experience. Thank you both TGV and Mark bringing me into the watch collecting world, who are completely responsible for turning me into a watch collector when previously I had 1. 3 of my watches come from Long Island Watch including moding accessories and a straps.
Thank you guys - this was a pure joy. Wearing my Orient Star Seeker (white dial) that my wife got for me for my 40th birthday four years ago from... Long Island Watch! Thank you Mark for everything you do. I've got my eye on a 42mm B-Uhr from Laco, for all the reasons you stated (black dial for me). TGV, give yourself another pat on the back. Your interviewing style is so excellent and laid-back, and you don't get credit for your production, which has always been A+. (As an aside , why am I wearing a GMT? I'm not going anywhere...) Currently waiting for my Citizen Sailhawk to land, so there's something to think about - Yacht Timers! Personally I HAAATE things like the Frédérique Constant or TNG mechanicals (because I actually race sailboats) so re-synching on a gun is quasi-impossible unless you have a quartz - My go-to was a Casio yacht timer (early 90's) which would let me recalibrate on the next minute of the sequence but the gasket's gone and I had to epoxy the bezel back on so it's retired (389 AW-300 - genius watch!). Now that I think of it, coordinate discussion of yacht timers with 2021 America's Cup - those boats are insane, so it'll keep, but I'd love your take because they are such a cool niche. Thanks again guys! Stay safe!
Just love both of you together. Respect from Singapore 🇸🇬. Learn so much from you guys.
I enjoy listening to the watch community. Thanks to you both.
Good evening TGV, great you and Marc got back together for this video. Cracking video with really good watches you two brought up. Marc's Islander watches really developed have their own design language. Inspired by the SKX, but taking it two steps further. Have a great weekend!
Good evening my friend,
So glad to hear that and so true what you say about the Islander, love to see how far it's developed.
Thank you, have a great rest of the weekend,
Best regards,
TGV
Great video! Recently discovered you and am blowing through the back log of videos. My choices for this topic:
- Steinhart Ocean One Ceramic
- Seagull 1963 (with the cream dial)
- Islander Automatic Field Watch
- Orient Bambino 2 gen, version 3 (with the gray dial, beautiful!)
I’m probably a little over the $1K limit, but close enough.
Honorable mention to the Vostok Komandirskie which I wear when I’m in Brazil (or other locations) where I don’t want to wear something I’d be super bummed to lose, though to be honest, if I did lose I’d be pretty bummed. It’s just a cool, inexpensive, solid piece of Russia that keeps surprisingly good time.
Hey Mark, check out a positive pressure filtered air box for your watch assembly. They're not too expensive. They use a HEPA filter to keep dust out of the work space.
Ive been watching these while on the treadmill at the gym. Makes an hour of cardio fly by! Love the rapport between you two. Great conversations
Nice to see both of you into that video 🙌 Interesting talk 🙏
Marc is such a likable person, I will be buying watches from his store just because he is cool
I’ve owned the flighty for a year now, the domed hardlex is gorgeous! It’s quartz movement doesn’t miss a beat and I set all my watches to it. Never had to reset its time except when changing for daylight savings. I am a bracelet guy and the bracelet is a bit of a let down with only a few micro adjustments and the hollow polished middle links. For the price it’s crazy. Bought mine for under 190. I am selling it and I will miss it but I’m glad to have owned one and can’t wait to see what I decide on next!
So good to see the channel back to its old self...Thanks TGV
Thanks for the video and chat TGV and Marc - Really enjoyed it and looking forward to the next installment - Power permitting 😉 Cheers Noel
Good dynamic with these two. Good chemistry, similar styles, they play off each other well. Their watch choices aren’t what I like, but the video is great.
If I had to choose:
Diver - Seiko Monster (my personal favorite diver)
- Dan Henry 1962 as something a bit classier than the diver
- Bambino for dress
- Square G-Shock as a beater
- Lastly a vintage Benrus/Hamilton Vietnam watch for fun vintage watch
I love watching you two guys who know your stuff talk lovingly about every brand regardless of price.
Shows real class. And I want a new 38 mm flashlight. Just a matter of time Marc ......be ordering soon!
Love you guys both!
A watch I ran across yesterday evening was from Hanhart Watches, their Pioneer One series. Absolutely beautiful watches (including their other series as well). Would love to see a review of them. Loved this episode. I just received my first watch from Island Watch last week, an Orient Helios with the blue dial. Automatic, sapphire crystal, stainless bracelet. It's a great nomination for a dress watch at a very affordable price ($209). I took it to a nearby jeweler that only handles Tissot and Omega watches. The jeweler commented several times what a lovely watch it was and asked about the brand. I'm now trying to decide between a Hamilton Khaki and a Lacos flieger for a daily watch so was glad to hear those two make your lists.
For a great GADA (go anywhere, do anything) watch that costs $595 dollars, I heartily recommend a KNOT Watch AT-38SVBK.
Fully made in Japan, sapphire crystal, zaratsu polished case, 50M water resist, Miyota 9015 movement and 38mm. If you love the SARB033, this is basically in the same spirit.
You two guys are true gentlemen. Each with a unique personality but sharing interests and friendship.
I'd like to see you get into the wide range of Hamilton watches
Second that!
As far as RUclips is concerned, Hamilton _only_ makes Khaki field watch variants, lol
I have the gold Flightmaster,On the gold bracelet. Complements almost every time I wear it. It Screams sports dress watch. It’s small enough to totally pull off the dress watch look. One of my favorites.SEIKO IS KING !!!
Your secret is safe here, Ed.
Alexander Menzies thanks Al
My goodness. I got to say those Hugo clips that you make, are just classic and timeless. You’re very funny my good sir.
Amazing Intro TGV, so great to see two friends talking about something they love 👍😊🇮🇹
-Skx 007J, black nato
-Flightmaster, original bracelet
-Orient Defender, James Bond nato
Yeah, these two guys are definitely my favorite influencers.
It's really good thing if you have someone to talked too about your fashion.. Nice collaboration again my good sirs.. Keep it up always.. More power. 💪👌
Terrific video gents. U guys are great together! Suggestion for next “watch talk”... 3 or 4 piece watch collection in the $1,000-2,000 range. Cheers 🍻
Good evening tgv, great conversation with mark , I hope all is well with you and all your loved ones, take care Ryan.
An SKX mod certainly makes an excellent beater/dive/everyday watch. Love the functionality of the day date and timing bezel function.
It has a place in any collection
I really enjoy watching you two talk watches...I just bought a Squale from Island watch...based on your recommendations. : )
Marc:
I'm also a huge fan of Hokusai. Please get more wave watches; I will buy one the day they arrive. : )
Hugo really developed his bad side after getting arrested many moons ago!
So unsafe for Hugo to be roaming around. Let's keep him occupied with DW and fossils.
@@jashoo8597 took the words from my mouth. Hugo is headed not for a straight forward homicide but more of an atrocity. Bones everywhere.
A little behind hear in the UK.....apologies TGV.......a very informative video and i love the content.......hope the history of Swatch is coming soon my friend!!!! Happy Sunday👍👍
I like their chemistry.. just 2 nice guys talking about watches.. it's hard to hate Mark, he's a really nice guy
Thank you 😊 🙏 , just posted a new one!
Best regards,
TGV
Marc is the classiest down to earth guy! You make a great duo, please have him on more often!
I really enjoyed watching you and Marc I'm hooked and binge watched all the videos you've both done.
If you want a challenge - 2 or 3 piece collection for 100$.
I can do one for 100€:
Starking AM0184 (Chinese dresswatch - controversial I guess) - 40€
Vostok Komandirskie manual-wind (quirky Russian field watch - maybe one with a more subtle dial) - 35€
Casio World Time (aka Casio Royale - quite well known digital sports watch) - 20€
The boys! ... love these series! Marc is such a cool guy. Good to see Hugo is terrorizing Humons once again! O&A!
Hey guys, here's my three: Citizen GMT Nighthawk BJ7135-02E for everyday wear, Seiko 5 SNK793 on a lizard strap for my rare dress up needs, and a GShock GW 2310 for everything else. (TGV you might take a look at the Citizen, very cool watch.) Thanks!
TGV! Love your insight and knowledge. And you've made me wear my Seikos more proudly. Thanks!
So I have a suggestion (and maybe Mark can help): Can you make miniseries about mechanical in house movements? Perhaps one episode on the history of the most important developments, such as self-winding, day-date, accuracy and so on. One episode as a guide to which brands that actually make their own movements and why some brands do not. It would be nice to learn more about ETA and similar manufacturers in that episode. And finally a guide to buying the best in house movements, from affordable (my price range) to the absolute best.
Keep up the good work! Your passion for horology and watches is inspiring!
My Seiko Hardlex crystal on my Cocktail time has a nick in the crystal right at the twelve o'clock. My 2 day old Timex Waterbury has a scratch on the display case back crystal that I just discovered this morning and I have babied this watch. I don't care for comments about how Hardlex and mineral are adequate. In my experience, there is no substitute for Sapphire.
These watchtalk vids have become some of my favorites. Hope you're doing well T! 🙏🏻
Justin!!!!!! seeing your comment has just made my day.
I am very well thank you, how the devil are you?!?!?
I hope all is well, we should catch up soon, thank you for the comment.
Best regards,
TGV
Two stand up guys. I've learned alot in the past 2 to 3 years just from these 2 gentlemen. Great video.
Hi TGV, always great to see you and Mark discuss watches. I ordered my Squaley 1521 years ago from him based on your introduction to the brand. Nice guy and I enjoy his channel as well. Hope all is well. Best regards, John
John!!!! Lovely to hear from you, so funny, I thought of you just the other day as I was looking at my Fiat Fighter plane.
I am very well thank you, I hope this finds you and your loved ones safe and well too.
So glad to hear about your 1521, I wore mine just yesterday.
Enjoy the rest of the weekend, stay bene fratello!
Best regards,
TGV
A great Sunday morning video, thanks TGV !!
TGE, you're slo-mo reaction to the Rolex releases......priceless. I felt the same. There's still only one of those that I'd like and that is the black dial Black bezel no date.
I was much more excited about my incoming watches: A pair of the new Seiko Presages (the Negroni for me and the Manhattan for my wife). They arrived on Friday and they are stunning. I also have a Longines 1945 arrive on Monday - something I've wanted since it came out.
PS - live your colabs with Mark. Good work.
I am glad to hear Marc's opinion about the 38mm crowd for the trend back toward classic sizes. I think Rolex missed the memo because they rid themselves of the 39mm OPs and created the 41mm class. They still have 36mm, but its binary position still harkens back to women's and men's sizes, foregoing reasonable middle sizes for non-dress pastel watches.
That 36mm Bambino would've been great with thinner hand wind movement.
