I'm Chinese and I'm sorry that you encountered some "rip-off" taxi drivers in China. Next time if you see them unwilling to put the meter down, you can call the report hotline written in the taxi after they reject to ride you. Because some drivers don't think the foreigners know how to report, they would do whatever they want. They don't dare to rip off Chinese tourists because they know we will definitely report to the Consumer's Association (nationwide hotline: 12315). Don't let them bully you!
And I also recommend you to download the app Didi Dache. It is China's Uber and the price will be assured because there is a credit system for the drivers. This is the best way to prevent yourself from being scammed by random taxi drivers.
I love how positive you are about China! I've lived in Shanghai for the last three years and absolutely adore it. No one from home seems to understand why because they only hear the bad stuff and cannot fathom why this place makes me so happy. The safety, the accessibility, the amazing travel adventures, the incredible expat community, and so much freedom. Of course, there are many downfalls but so is living back home and here I actually afford to travel because the cost of living is so much more reasonable. I'm glad you're spreading the word about what a wonderful country China is and demystifying stereotypes from what foreign media portrays!
Shenyang is my hometown, and to tell the truth, even most chinese have not been there because it is not the top spots you choose, but you did, and made a marvelous video! Really appreciate it !
I have travelled a month in China by myself and it was pretty stressful at times with not speaking the language. But I'm glad I did it and would do it again.
GRRRRRRL, you're my Little Idol! Been watching your amazeballz channel for some months now and now I'm moving to Beijing later this year.....excited, nervous and scared but PUMPT and can't thank you enough for your energy, vlogs, your inspiration, todo!! Big hugs from Barcelona!!!!! XO
Always great to see you visiting other parts of China. You're so travel-hardened...I'm not surprised to see you unfazed in awkward situations. Shantese is a real bundle of fun. The kids she teaches are going to have an awesome time! :D
@Winston Frederick Sterzel Do you know why I don't hate any other RUclipsrs who criticize or even hold a biased view about China/Chinese culture *except SerpentZA* ? Because they (all the rest) are telling sth based on their own honest feelings and observations to their viewers. *However* , SerpentZA is a manipulating bitch who is pure RUclips and other social media income oriented money baiter. *SerpentZA wears some suit lined with lead; cool outside, awful inside; heavy cloaks force him to behave sedately, although seething within; cloak true character in false appearance* . Your so-called morality is purely relying on your cheating, lies, blacking other nation's image (including South Africans). You had articulated multiple times in your videos that the beer girl (your ex-wife) "is very ugly comparing to Sasha". This one more thing can prove your personality . *You only love* internet sensation and money-baiting and *yourself. You don't actually care about anyone else* , including your own parents, your ex-wife, your in-laws, Sasha, Chinese or anyone, *except yourself* .
lovely to see you introduce Shenyang from an expat way. It is definitely not an easy task to overcome culture shock, especially when you travel alone, but actually, you cope it well and your video always show positive energy to us
OMG! you traveled my hometown, BENXI(本溪). ben xi water caves (本溪水洞)is a very beautiful place, while also very cold inside. i am studying abroad, or i will find you and say a greeting to you. my hometown is small but a really nice city.
Whenever I wanted to travel, I did my online research first. Like, how would the place look like, what to expect inside that particular building or whatever the place I intend to go and then how much is the ticket and all that stuff. Again, if I stuck in something. I never hesitated to ask people around me. 8/10 would be very much willing to help you. One more tip : I never studied Chinese in my university what I learned was from the people. I used to learn the phrases before each trip. Like, if I plan to go to a market, I'll use google translator for "going to be used phrases" like, "how much for this", "please lower down the price a bit", "it's not a good fit" and "do you have other sizes/colors"? This is how I learned and enhanced most of my Chinese language skill. I absolutely loved it living in Beijing for 2 years.
Poppy that was impressive ! You actually fought off those scams. Sorry that you had to went through those doggy stuff, but hey, you were invincible LOL
Hey, great video I have just moved to shenyang for work and so far I haven't met any expats only chinese xD and i am now looking for places to explore and people to meet so thanks for the video tour!
Super cool and hilarious video that shows both good and bad experiences. Your new friend Shantis (not sure about the spelling, sorry) is very sweet and adorable.
This is my hometown ! Been watching ur channel for longtime , good work girl and keep the good work coming ! Btw, try the Chinese Uber instead of taxi it could be easier for u
Learn mandarin and make your life easy in China. Though Chinese aren't expect you speak Chinese, but it's definitely necessary if you are going to stay for a long time
I really admire you! You inspire me to travel more. I've been living in the US for 9 years now. Have been to most states in the US..next Target is Alaska!
lovely poppy, you found a good place to travel that I don't know ever even i am a chinese.i have been to GuiLin, Zhangjiajie. But now i think i will go to this place this summer vacation
Great to watch your video, Poppy. And if are available, I highly recommend you to come to Sichuan province, which is in the southwest of China, and the central city Chengdu has sooo many delicious foods !!!!! Hope u could come one day and enjoy your trip~
love the content in general, always happy to see when you don't use "booty" thumbnail. and much happier with your OG content then this trend of booty shots. This video is very refreshing and encouraging to me.
It's not just non-mandarin speaking foreigners finding it daunting to travel alone. I am an overseas ethnic Chinese from Singapore. In some places, it's difficult to get to because it involve a change of different modes of transport or that the locals there are not speaking Mandarin but a version of Mandarin or local dialect that I do not understand. Add to that is China is really a huge country about the size of entire Europe whereby certain places are not seamlessly connected by public transport vs those in Europe.
Great video, Poppy. Those caves were amazing. Good to see you building confidence in yourself and developing your "street smarts". Stay safe and keep having fun. Oh, I forgot to ask: Have you found/used any Chinese translation phone apps to help communicate? Like, can you speak into your phone in English and then have it repeat what you said in Chinese to whoever you're trying to talk to and vice versa?
hey poppy! Great tips, here, as always, you are such an inspiration for those of us who get out for 3-4 weeks only per year for these cool trips you do as a career... had to laugh about your point in this video about your taxi driver. last time i was there my taxi driver got out of the car, same as yours, went over to the middle of the median, some trees, but still visible and took a piss.. lol :):) ... on another topic, do you ever meet your fans for coffee? will you be in Shenzhen the week of may 7-11? coffee/breakfast on me, if you can.
hahahaha seriously? Oh my gosh that's way more ridiculous! I did a meet-up once but I haven't had time to do another one. No I will actually be in Chonqing, I haven't been in Shenzhen much recently haha
Be extremely careful traveling alone like you do, the world is full of people you don't want to run into by yourself gurl. Always be aware of your surroundings.
Have watched quite a few of your videos, and have loved all of them. Your voice is very clear even outdoors, but can’t spot a mic on you. Just wondering if you do use one or do you improve the sound during editing.... thanks and keep posting!
I do both. I recently bought a lavalier mic that I use for my speaking parts. I also attached a muffler to my camera since there is no speaker and it helps block out the wind. I also do some adjustments in post-production.
A big thumb up for the map shown in the video. I think it is very important that U should make the basic respect when U go to the other country for travelling , working ,studying or living , and Poppy did it for sure, so welcome warmly to come China. It is great to make videos for the travelling experiences and share your happy and joy with others. Definitely language barrier is most challenging or difficult thing for travelling alone. Actually the difficult part to study Chinese for foreign friends is the culture , which is big differences with West and China has a long history to make very rich cultures. So the best way to know the country is to know the culture well . There are good guys and bad guys anywhere in the world, but I think most of common people are nice while some tax drivers talked in the video behaved badly .I'm sure most of Chinese people are friendly and will give your help when necessary. And now Chinese government attaches great importance to education and actually most of young people especially born in the 90s and 00s , these people get good educated well and They are self-confident and have ideals for expression, advocating freedom, and being polite, they don't spit, they don't shout in public. It is true that China is a large country with a population of 1.4 billion. Not everyone can do that, especially some slightly older people with limited vision and limited education. They rarely have the opportunity to see foreigners, so some of them like to take photos with foreigners. I'm sure China will be better and more open and we welcome any good guy from any country to China for travelling ,working ,studying. And have a always good time in China .
WOW Shenyang is my hometown. Kinda surprise you would visit, as you said Shenyang is not really a tourism spot...anyway I really do enjoy your video, thank you!
Hey poppi!!😊 love the video of ur energy and smile like always.. question, how come u decided to choose china as a country to visit and live ? And what made u wanted to travel even alone??.ur very independent and ur actually very inspiring!!
O! M! G! I was literally trilled and touched watching this video because you came to mah city for real!!😭😭😂😂 Shenyang doesn’t have much tourists, which is true, in comparison to other major cities. But it’s also trying to do its best to attract more people. Your videos give me so much inspiration, and I’m about to start my personal RUclips channel as well! Hope we will have some opportunities to work something out together! Subscribing your channel NOW🤩🤩
I saw you about two weeks ago on a street close to high-tech metro station in Shenzhen. I didn't interrupt you coz you were very engaged in a conversation with a gentleman. I thought I should let you know you have fans now.
OMG! Welcome to northeast of China! So glad you come to Benxi water cave, which is the most fantastic destination in my hometown Benxi. Wish you had great time here!
Hey Poppy, I noticed that in your video for Career in China you mentioned the malls there. I live in Europe now, and I definitely miss the malls back in China, maybe next time you can make an episode especially for the malls there. 😊
Hi Poppy, as far as I know, everybody in China is using a map app called Baidu map to navigate. Just like a Chinese google map. I was using that to find my way out while doing a solo cycling trip down in Yunnan province in southwestern china. Wondering if there is an English version of that or some alike.. then life will be a lot easier for you travelers I suppose. Love your vids:) keep exploring !

Hey Poppy, I noticed that in your video for Career in China you mentioned the malls there. I live in Europe now, and I definitely miss the malls back in China, maybe next time you can make an episode especially for the malls there. 😊
Well the thing is I don't like malls, not much of a shopper haha
That kind of taxi is black taxi, it is also illegal in China, but holy crap police, I have to say expecially in northeast of China.
Go to Harbin (a northern city of China) in winter to experience the -30°C and you will enjoy the amazing ice/snow statues.
oh northern China, how lovely........
Receipt is fapiao which should pronounce more like far-puo. Also you can save 发票 in your phone which means the same.
Welcome to Shenyang.
I would take a boat with poppy anywhere
😍😍
hahaha ok
Hi Poppy, as far as I know, everybody in China is using a map app called Baidu map to navigate. Just like a Chinese google map. I was using that to find my way out while doing a solo cycling trip down in Yunnan province in southwestern china. Wondering if there is an English version of that or some alike.. then life will be a lot easier for you travelers I suppose. Love your vids:) keep exploring !
