  • What is China really like? In 2023, China reopened and despite being told not to travel here, we travelled to Beijing for the first time. Flying in to China, we did not have many expectations from Beijing, or China more generally, but you hear A LOT about this country in western media. We've travelled to many places that have stereotypes & stigmas attached to them and China is no different, hopefully this video can expel a few of them for you, as it did for us. Welcome to Beijing, the capital of the Peoples Republic of China.

The railway network connecting the east and west continents during the founding of the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries was also a credit to Chinese workers at that time, but it was not recognized by the U.S. government. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese laborers died in order to build these railway networks. There are also a large number of mining plants.

Actually, the Chinese worked from the West, and mostly Irish from the East. After the Civil War, many war veterans joined in, plus freed Blacks. And since most of the mileage of the railroads was east of the Rockies, most of the track was laid by Irish. The Chinese did a lot of work, and were treated badly, but men died all long the routes - it was assumed and no one cared about any of them.

Beijing pollution was probably worst around 2013-2015. But as with anything in China, a year is an eternity. By 2017 it was already pretty decent and COVID just gave more impetus to clear things up.
Keep in mind yellow smog is more than likely the Gobi desert rolling in. That is more of a consequence of the "great green wall" they've been planting.

There is no logic where large populations would have more crime but smaller populations would have less crime.
That isn't a 'thing' as you'd also have more governors, police, judges. right? do you get that?
As for 'crime rates' we don't know what that means. Brazilian Favelas and the center of Mexico's notorious Cartel Gangs have 3% crime rates which is just to say the percentage of people who are actually arrested and processed or convicted of crimes.

The best about traveling in China is foreigner regardless of which country you are from, color of your skin, male or female, in a group or alone and language you are speaking. You can travel to anywhere freely, safely and happily without much worry of anyone coming to bother you.
There won't be any touting people following you, pestering you and want to be your sightseeing guide, pestering you to bring you go shopping with them, taxi or those trishaw riders want to show you around and they are all trying to scam you.
I has experienced in China west neighbor country "I". You can't even walk freely in their city. Many touting people keep following you pestering you to be your sightseeing guide, pestering you to bring you go shopping with them, taxi or those trishaw rider want to show you around and all trying to scam you. You hardly can have the freedom of enjoying yourself. I have been to many China cities and never a time I have met touting people. You are free to enjoys your holiday without anyone bothering you.

One is dirty, poor, crime ridden, horrible infrastructure, chaotic, dangerous for women and the other is a leading global power rising to the top with impressive security law & order. My kids go clubbing in Shanghai till 4 am and walk to our apartment in safety and peace. Even in US I would not let them do that. In India, my daughter cannot wear shorts or low skirts comfortably in public - people stare at her and her western friends. India will never catch up to China, sad but true.

We went last year, after China opened its border again. First visit to China too. We did our research before hand. We downloaded the pay apps, arrange our internet access with our local network providers, change some cash first, arrange debit card facilities with our banks . Lines at the airport were very orderly (but the officers sure were strict, tho' courteous). Everything later was quite a breeze, shopping, shows, tourist sites etc..Whatsapp etc. all work well. And yes, we knew to keep our passports with us all the time.
I already knew everything in China will be huge, literally. I have seen enough travel videos. But what I really did not expect and really surprised me was the quietness. The sheer number of cars, motorcycles, cyclists and people on the streets of Beijing and Shanghai and yet, it just felt like a background hum. I think cutting all those noises really reduces the stress of city living. I lived in a moderate size city and I am used to the noise produced by cars and trucks, honkings and tootings, motorcycles revving when out on the streets. There were many other things that amazed me - the size of each meals, the efficiency (my goodness, you could order take-outs from your phones while in the train and the food will be at the next train station for collection), the cleanliness, even in the back lanes of the city, the number of bicycles for rent parked on every curb.
I am already thinking of my next trip and I want to explore.

I can tell from your vidoes that you guys are amazing people with very positive vibe and energy and always read to be tolerate and enjoy different cultures and customs. That's the most important characteristics. Thanks again for showing us a real China and a real world which is so different from traditional western mainstream media. Absolutely love it.

The language barrier is everywhere. I travelled to Bangkok and had to carry our hotel business card in Thai , driver cannot understand where we want to go.
The same is in Japan, Korea, small European towns too.

One common "trick" to know whether the foods will taste good whenever you are in a foreign place, is to judge by how crowded the place is. The more crowded it is, the better the chances of how good the foods will be.

Chng, you are not completely. This is what I have thought. When we had travelled tour in eastern China provinces with visit to interest resort spots we came across long queue for the Chinese dumplings. It must be delicious but was not after waited for hours. We did not finish all. It is same as in my countries. Not all long queues for food must be good. It is more dependence on your taste

      @@hockheekwek8431 ,
Of cos NOT every crowded restaurants will be serving good foods. Note my last sentence in the earlier post...."the more crowded it is, the BETTER THE CHANCES of how good the foods will be".
Btw note the English saying which goes...."One man's meat is another man's poison".

You two are so culturally experienced now that you can enter a totally new country and feel comfortable and even find familiarities immediately. What would it take to give you culture shock now?

Best of my wishes for you to have a happy, safe, and rewarding 2024.
