+Coolrockndad dude the curves and lines of the ace body and the power of the ford v8, makes the cobra the most beautiful and deadly car ever made, my ding dong tingles everytime i hear one of them start up lol
Great lineup of cars,...I was really excited the first minute or two,...but at the end I was disappointed. I expected more than 2 guys riding around for 10 minutes.
jerry henderson Actually, Lola, not Lotus, built the GT40. Lotus wanted in, they were going to shoe-horn a US V8 into a Europa. (What a beast that would have been!) But Colin Chapman and Henry Ford2 argued over who could sell it under what label and who got credit, so Ford kept looking. Lola had a 'production' car (they'd made about 6 of them) and with a bit of head scratching, you could slot a British Ford V8 in. That became the GT40 mk 1. It was the best looking and handling, but slightly down on power. So they crammed a bigger Ford V8 in. That had power, but it was heavier, which threw the handling for 6. The car you see in the pictures, mostly, which looks so good - that's a mk 1. The car that won at LeMans, several times, that was a later mk with a big bulge or two at the back. They were faster, but not as nice to drive. I did once saw a mouth watering photo. It was a Lotus Europa with a (Brit) Ford DFV engine, out of a formula 1 car. It was a test & dev mule at the Lotus factory. All work on that stopped when Chapman and Ford argued. Today we have the little Lotus Exige. Imagine one of those with the last of the Naturally Aspirated F1 V10 motors...
"This much car for that little money?" Seven thousand dollars was a SHIT LOAD of money in 1965. You could buy a brand new V8 Mustang for 2500 bucks in 1965. This thing cost a FORTUNE. Just making rough estimates, the Cobra cost 2.8 times as much as a V8 Mustang, a new V8 Mustang costs 31k, times 2.8 is $87k. The new Viper which they compare the original Cobra to is not a far cry off at $97K. The Cobra is a legendary car to be sure, but the notion that it was a bargain is ridiculous. It was EXPENSIVE.
Oscar DeRoche And by simple inflation figures, a V8 Mustang from then cost $18,000 in today's money. Anyone with a brain can realize that cars cost relatively less back then even after inflation is calculated, and my point remains that seven thousand bucks was a ton of money for a car in 1965.
The sound of a 427 Cobra in full stereo through my headphones is worth more than gold while I'm working overseas. Thanks for this, guys. Great commentary. Great editing in the video. You didn't bother getting too technical because we know the numbers already. This was more of a philosophical segment, if you will. Different cars in different genres with a common gene. I honestly don't think there's enough of this type of video out there.
I had an original 427 street car back when. Yes, there was plenty of zoom but hooking up was the major problem. Getting the torque to the ground with 1960's tires was a major obstacle. Heat coming through the firewall and trans tunnel was also very uncomfortable during the summer. I ran Sunoco 260 ultra high grade gas at about .33 cents a gallon.
Heat -- I learned the hard way. My 65 289 I encountered a problem. My foot came out of my shoe. I was wearing desert boots which were some kind of crepe sole. The heat coming through the firewall melted the crepe or whatever were those soles.
As a junior Chassis Designer I hired into the Viper "skunkworks" in May of 1989 at Jeep Truck Engineering in Detroit. I came from a hot rod family so I was pretty jacked about it. Got to meet some real cool people like Bob Lutz, Lee Iaccoca, Reeves Callaway but the coolest was meeting Carroll Shelby. Very cool seeing a video honoring him and his car.

there was the Super Snake back then...only 2 made. Twin Turbo 428 Ford. 750 HP. Shelby gave one to Bill Cosby and he drove it once and sold it...it killed its next owner as he drove off a cliff. They salvaged it and rebuilt it. It was claimed to go 1.9 seconds 0-60 and do 9.50 in the quarter...faster than this new Demon crap
@@netrioter auto.howstuffworks.com/1966-shelby-cobra-427-super-snake.htm While your commentary is mostly correct, you are incorrect in that it is a twin-turboed 428. It actually is a 427 with 2 Paxton Superchargers which gave it a 0-60 time of a little over 3 seconds. Lastly, Bill Cosby returned his to Shelby after one drive... evidently it scared the hell out of the future Jello-hawking, sexual predator.
You guys are clueless. The newer cars have to meet a long line of laws to even be on the road, the Cobra was a fiberglass shell, on a fucking awful twin tube chassis (they handled like spaghetti), and a big engine. No safety regs, no emissions, no crash test etc, etc. You crash the Cobra at just 40 mph and likely you will die.
Really nice to see an original, 'narrow hip', Shelby Cobra still in it's original street trim. A lot of these ended up being converted to S/C spec with the wider fenders, pipes, quick-jack bumpers, and roll-bar. That was cool, but a street Cobra has a special look and a narrow hip is a really unique package.
I'm a Mopar fan, but everything Shelby touched was pure driving gold!! The Benz was really nice, love German engineering!! I just love cars! There, I said it.
Have you heard the story of Chrysler and the Sunbeam Tiger? Sunbeam wanted Shelby to do something with their sports car similar to what he had done with the AC Cobra. Shelby responded by putting Ford small blocks in the Sunbeam Alpine. The result was called the Sunbeam Tiger. Things were going great until Chrysler bought Sunbeam and decided to put their small block LA engine in the car. They soon found that the LA small block was larger than the Ford small block and would not fit. Oops! They were in the embarrassing position of selling the cars at Chrysler dealerships with a Ford engine inside. When the stock of Ford small blocks ran out, the model was discontinued.

See someone in the Mercedes, " hey, you see that Mercedes?" - " what? I wasn't paying attention and didn't hear anything" its a Mercedes just like the other 1000s on the rode. Where I live Mercedes, BMWs and Audi's are every where and nobody gives a crap. When you see a Viper and can hear it thundering from a mile away, that will turn your head. The gt500 looks like every other mustang on the road but its sound is booming and makes you look for where its coming from. I tried to explain this to a young kid but he didn't get it. I think most Japanese & European cars are ordinary, cookie-cutter, family sedans. My 2014 Dodge Challenger R/T is a head-turner. I get compliments every day. By the way, I used to own a '77 Dodge Power Wagon. That was a beautiful truck.
OddTimeMan I drive a subaru WRX sti and I kind of like that when people see it go by they say oh thats just a.... wait what was that, and why did it sound so crazy and have a hood scoop. Eh just different types of head turning. But I also appreciate the different of not having an everyday car but you can get that with Japanese cars too like my 1977 Datsun 280z.
***** I grew up in upstate N.Y. Datsun is a name that inspires only laughter there. They did not handle the N.Y. winters very well at all. Then again, almost none of the foreign cars did. Sometimes you still see old SAABs or VW Beetles or an occasional old Mercedes there though. Anything else (older foreign cars) requires a garage at least 6 months out of the year there.
***** Its a RWD Front engine lightweight 2 seater, not designed for winter. Thats why I have an STI for that. I would laugh if I saw soomeone trying that too, but at the person not the car. Its like someone driving a corvette around in snow.
***** You can do it but you will get the same laughs as someone driving a datsun Z in it. Also even without the bags of sand that car weighs more than a Z car.
I have been researching these cars for years. I have decided that I want one. As a SFC serving in the military with four kids, I will never be blessed with one of the original models but I hear the replicas are just as stylish and fun. Before coming to Korea, I sold my 2007 C6 :-( so that I could save some money while Im here. If you have any input on these cobras, feel free to respond. Thank you and God Bless America.
The Mustang a secretary's car? 7 grand was short money in the 60's? What is this guy talking about? Get him out of that Shelby Cobra, he isn't deserving.
In 1966, they stopped putting the oil cooler on the street cars because people kept bumping the curbs with it and denting the little hump up. That year, they also added the center bar in the grill. In 1967, they changed the tail lights to the two stacked round lights, which this one clearly doesn't have. Therefore, I'm willing to bet this is a mid to late 1966 model. Some later 1967 cars even supposedly came with 365 HP 428 engines.
I love the Shelby owner lol. He was like shut up dude, I got this. I'm not sure if the journalist is all that competent at racing, driving, or admiring the machines he is piddling in.
God I love car and driver. When I was a kid I found several years worth of car and driver magazines on garbage day walking the streets looking for treasures with my friends. I read all of those for the love of cars. I recently moved to Ann Arbor and found out C&D is based here! I just wish I knew how to get a job with them!
I love how it goes from two guys driving around a turn and then the next turn is one man by himself who looks like the stig and then the next turn is the two guys again lol
I just wanted to chime in that I think this was a very well written piece. It gets the point across without over talking and some great examples. Perhaps a little short on the comparison of each car, but very well done.
Fact is: The AC Cobra is much better today than it was in the 1960's, because the tires in the mid 1960's were CRAP compared to what is available today for high performance tires. I want to see the Cobra driven hard on a set of original crappy 1960's tires!
I wouldn't want a 1965 Ac Cobra 427 side oiler which is my favorite car. An original one that need a restoration would be five hundred thousand and a mint one millions of dollars. You can't afford to drive it and wreck it. I would like a new Factory 5 AC Cobra and put a lightweight 347 Ford stroker motor with about 500HP, for a fraction of the price of a factory AC Cobra. That is just me.
+Oducks58 The CSX4000 series are called "Continuation Cobras" and are build by Shelby American today. I think they start at around 80k without the engine and trans.
Are we not supposed to notice the change from the two ( host and other dude ) and race helmet man, during the driving shots? That and all that wind noise aside, I love this type of content. Much better than a review where the guy just reads the article from the magazine.
Goober American goofs. Lots of words word words - but it's just unpleasant noise..."Carroll Shelby died this year but he knew something... the man has to control the car...." thanks for telling us what Carroll knew you insightful genius...."
I remember Cobras going for $2,500 in 1969, because they weren't worth $3,000. C63 AMG who cares it's a butt ugly car. As for Colin Comer he may have known Carroll Shelby but then again Carroll died just a couple of years ago. I worked for Carroll Shelby, I can tell you about the dozens of gun metal blue cobras lined up at a hanger at LAX in the 60's I was at a Cobra show in Pebble Beach a few years back before he, Carroll, I hadn't seen Carroll for over 30 years and he was standing right next to me and I wouldn't have recognized him, I just remember him from the 60's. Colin has a lot of book learning and knows a lot I grant you that BUT I know the weird things that aren't in the books about Carroll and the cobras.
Would you care to occasionally engage us youtube comment readers with stories of decades past, involving the man himself and you? It'd be much appreciated
prunga308 Judging from the way you talk about the C63 I very much doubt you ever worked for Carroll Shelby. Someone with even a limited amount of knowledge about cars would not talk that way about a Mercedes AMG C63.
I live in the exotics center of the universe, L.A. I've owned Alfa to Benz to Porsche to Mopar, 65+ cars. Nothing gets more attention than my $9,500 1967 Fairlane 500GTA, 302, C4 auto, Edelbrock 2059 - Edelbrock Power Package Top-End Kit with a 650 CFM, Hooker headers 2.5" , Flowmaster into 3" side-exhaust, and it does 11.45 quarter miles. farm8.static.flickr.com/7499/15595135724_eb4fc5e208.jpg
One thing Colin Comer forgot to mention is that the other thing that killed the muscle cars was the insurance companies. I remember looking at a '67 Corvette 427 and it stickered out at around $5,000. The problem was my insurance would have been $1000 every 6 months. Back then that was a LOT of money for insurance and that's what killed the deal for me.
In 1966 I came back from Vietnam with $8k burning a hole in my pocket. I was going to get a new car. I looked at the Cobra and the Vette, roll up windows and a heater won out as I stationed in Michigan. I would love to have either now.
The three-point safety belt was invented by Mercedes together with Volvo and Saab. Go read up on it if you seriously didn't know it. The door hinges and door safety mechanisms that are all standard on every cars today were made by Mercedes in the mid 30's for their first diesel car (which was THE first diesel passenger car). The weight distribution was an example of ingenuity. They were the first to do a lid that would stay in place even in winds. Go read up on it.
I'm a GT500 fan, but the GT500's 2 major problems are the fact that: a) the rear tires on the GT500 are the size of the ZL1's front tires & b) the brakes on the GT500 fade a hell of a lot quicker then the ZL1's. Both of those reasons add up to why the GT500 is slower around the track. Throw some 305 or 315/35R20s on the rear and upgrade the brakes to something that's drilled and slotted and you probably beat the ZL1 by even more in the 1/4 mile and decrease if not overtake the ZL1 on the track.
Yeah, there are Porsches, C63s, Vipers, Mustangs, and technical advances that can do so much for the vehicle and driver. Sorry, but there was only one Cobra, and for me, it is still the iconic sports car 50+ years after Shelby made them.
I am shocked by this show. I love cars, and rarely take a stroll round youtube, often snoring through KBB and Hot Rod mag clips. I greatly prefer those special moments in UK top gear, and though not the same (and not quite the same quality), these clips I've watched (this and the mazda/lotus clip) remind me of Top gear. I like the host, and appreciate the effort. Keep encouraging car culture!
427 would be far more exhilarating. I remember reading 1966 car & driver “if you don’t know how to handle horsepower don’t buy this car it can come around you at 80 mph in 4th gear going straight.”
In those days a farmer from Indiana built a Pontiac with a V8. When he raced against a FORD the Dodge won the race on the rear wheels only in the quarter mile. That farmer's name was Arnie Beswick.
I don’t care how much better or faster the newer cars are, I’d still take the Cobra over all of them. It’s an absolute legend!😍
Me too
Agree 100%.
Same
My favourite car of all time.
Yep.
the Cobra has way more class than any of the others, speed is just speed.
The 65 Cobra looks the best hands down!

I love how the guy beats the shit out of his Cobra. He drives it like it was meant to be driven.
I think the 427 Cobra is the meanest looking car ever produced.
Even after 50 years
Hmm...Nice video but I did actually believe from the title that they were actually going to compare these cars...Oh well.
thanks for saving my time!
All the car shows seem to think the guy talking is more important than the car they are reviewing. Swords and beer steins... really?
We all did.
Yeah, me too.
Same here!
Agreed, and the fact that this mid 60s car is still being compared to some of the best cars from today should speak volumes.
The original Cobra still has it. I remember Jeremy Clarkson talking about it on Top Gear. He said "The AC Cobra. Quiet. Until you start it up"
That narrow bodied 427 is by far the sexiest of them all
I thought the only narrow bodied examples were the 289 ones!
The '65 Cobra, hands down.
Shelby is my hero
One man who went toe to toe against mighty Ferrari and beat them

My grandfather built a 1965 Shelby Cobra.
Was his name Shelby?
I like turtles
reg barnsdale No, but he repairs boats and cars when their broken. He also restored a Volkswagen for my aunt.
My grandfather built a 1964 shelby cobra
My grandmother built a 1956 Shelby.....
I love the Shelby owner lol. He was like shut up dude, I got this.
I'm not sure if the journalist is all that competent at racing, driving, or admiring the machines he is piddling in.
I was expecting a race and not a bunch of talking and some leisurely cruising.
God I love car and driver. When I was a kid I found several years worth of car and driver magazines on garbage day walking the streets looking for treasures with my friends. I read all of those for the love of cars. I recently moved to Ann Arbor and found out C&D is based here! I just wish I knew how to get a job with them!
Useless video, no real review etc
10 minutes of talking to say nothing ..
You're spot on. It was a complete waste of time. Measurable comparisons between these cars?? Where were they??
Nice piece, Sam and C/D, and thanks for the loan of the Cobra. Would have been interesting to see relative track times for each...
Sam, why are you shaking the ends of your fingers so much?
I'll take the '65 Cobra any day.
I had a good laugh at the end when the Cobra-owner enters frame and gets in the car. Well-done :-)
Car and driver need to do some hiring!
I love how it goes from two guys driving around a turn and then the next turn is one man by himself who looks like the stig and then the next turn is the two guys again lol
I would take the 427 Cobra any day over the others!
the dodge viper is basically a modern cobra anyway :)
👍🙋
nah, its way heavier
Yea its pretty cool for an old school British car ...but its no Saleen S7
It's worth a hell of lot more as an original and they're a blast to drive. I have a replica
I just wanted to chime in that I think this was a very well written piece. It gets the point across without over talking and some great examples. Perhaps a little short on the comparison of each car, but very well done.
What if I also don't have $55,000?
+kingv911 send me your name, credit card info, and social security number, and I'll make you the co-beneficiary of unclaimed funds in Africa.
+Ed Baker lol
Ed Baker I've been fooled twice before -- never again!
+kingv911 Third time is a charm
Get a replica Cobra ;)
Plus you have the fun, learning experience, and headaches of building the thing yourself!
Only the earlier models are that expensive. Their are some for as little as 150,000. I saw a 1967 shelby cobra 427 csx4860 for 130,000 for sale.
+Oducks58 The CSX4000 series are called "Continuation Cobras" and are build by Shelby American today. I think they start at around 80k without the engine and trans.
I know a guy who has a 427 side oiler in a factory five....
Or get a Kirkham Bros. continuation car - in polished aluminum, copper, or brass.
Are we not supposed to notice the change from the two ( host and other dude ) and race helmet man, during the driving shots? That and all that wind noise aside, I love this type of content. Much better than a review where the guy just reads the article from the magazine.
LONG LIVE CARROL SHELBY
that ending was awesome!
Comparison??
Baloney!
You guys finally put together a well-narrated, intriguing piece. Good work.
Shelby Cobra ♥
Each one, being built by Shelby, was/is special. Special style, special speed, special power.
really cool cars lame review.
This was actually the first american-produced car program I've enjoyed. Great job!
I'm partial to the long-running Motor Week and John Davis!
This video delivers NOTHING.
Just two spoiled white muricans having fun...
They don't own the cars. Also why does it matter if they are white?
Yep, a whole bunch of nothing. Boo!
@@aperson4933 actually buddy in the 'white' shirt owns the Cobra.
My 14 500 is one of the most scariest cars I've ever owned... thank you Carroll....a true believer.
Goober American goofs. Lots of words word words - but it's just unpleasant noise..."Carroll Shelby died this year but he knew something... the man has to control the car...." thanks for telling us what Carroll knew you insightful genius...."
Nooo... I just labeled the American goofs in this video ... There are many terrific Americans... but this presenter is a grating stereotype....
Edward Lees SunRiseCars Fuck Off Ed Lee
Even if I had 2 Grand to spend on a car, I'd STILL choose the 2013 GT500, its unmatched in complete badassary.
I remember Cobras going for $2,500 in 1969, because they weren't worth $3,000.
C63 AMG who cares it's a butt ugly car.
As for Colin Comer he may have known Carroll Shelby but then again Carroll died just a couple of years ago.
I worked for Carroll Shelby, I can tell you about the dozens of gun metal blue cobras lined up at a hanger at LAX in the 60's
I was at a Cobra show in Pebble Beach a few years back before he, Carroll, I hadn't seen Carroll for over 30 years and he was standing right next to me and I wouldn't have recognized him, I just remember him from the 60's.
Colin has a lot of book learning and knows a lot I grant you that BUT I know the weird things that aren't in the books about Carroll and the cobras.
Would you care to occasionally engage us youtube comment readers with stories of decades past, involving the man himself and you? It'd be much appreciated
viperfanacr x2 i want to hear some weird things about the cobra and mr shelby
Michelle Unis
Harry Godson I don't think it's a particularly attractive care either. It's a matter of taste.
prunga308 Judging from the way you talk about the C63 I very much doubt you ever worked for Carroll Shelby. Someone with even a limited amount of knowledge about cars would not talk that way about a Mercedes AMG C63.
I am a self admitted jdm fan and still thoroughly enjoyed this review! *sub*

+be cool Back at you, fool.
+be cool And you'd wise and smart, if that falls into your world, to change your moniker (look it up) to Not cool at all, or maybe FOOL.
+David Ingham Well actually a 64 Fairlane 500 does get a bit moore
I like the stacked headlights, David. Bright yellow!
Nice, but you need to get rid of the pizza cutter back tires and put some fatter tires out back. Helps the look, handling and acceleration.
"you don't so much drive it, as poke it with a stick and channel the fury when you piss it off". well put!
super lame commentary
The Viper was built to pay tribute to the Cobra. Glad to see a fun little comparison between the two. Also, that is one dang good looking orange.
the new mustangs are girl cars...
You're a girl car.
555Tbird what? lol
555Tbird honestly he's right but the shelby gt500's have never been even the new ones
Mauro Monroy That's not what I meant, and that's mean. Who says things like this?
TheNIftyNinja Last Mustangs turn no heads at all.
I love his review of the Viper. You poke it with a sharp stick then you control it's fury...
This video is awesome, this is why im a yearly subscriber to your magazine...great work guys.
hard to believe that a 2018/19 GT Mustang 5.0 PP1 will stay right with these cars in the 1/4
I'm a GT500 fan, but the GT500's 2 major problems are the fact that: a) the rear tires on the GT500 are the size of the ZL1's front tires & b) the brakes on the GT500 fade a hell of a lot quicker then the ZL1's. Both of those reasons add up to why the GT500 is slower around the track. Throw some 305 or 315/35R20s on the rear and upgrade the brakes to something that's drilled and slotted and you probably beat the ZL1 by even more in the 1/4 mile and decrease if not overtake the ZL1 on the track.
i'm a fan of the coupe but that cobra is truly amazing
I remember reading 1966 car & driver “if you don’t know how to handle horsepower don’t buy this car it can come around you at 80 mph in 4th gear going straight.”
the nice thing about the GT500 is that it gets pretty good fuel efficency too
In those days a farmer from Indiana built a Pontiac with a V8. When he raced against a FORD the Dodge won the race on the rear wheels only in the quarter mile. That farmer's name was Arnie Beswick.
Fantastic comparison!
This guy is amazing! Can't wait to watch more of his reviews.
A very good video. Cars like these are fantastic, true man and machine harmony, no/minimal electronic interferance/aid.
Props to you guys for having shots of cars driving around without putting some god awful music over the exhaust note. Thank you!
the burn out at the end was bad ass
