Every RUclipsr is essentially labeling the PS5 Pro as a scam or not worth it, but they didn't take even 10 seconds to think about why it's priced at $700. You're getting A LOT of performance for the money. If you wanted to think about it in terms of frames per dollar, the PS5 Pro is the best bang for your buck.

That's one game I'd like to see what the Pro could do. If you turn quality mode on it looks incredible. Performance is much smoother but you can see the hit you take to visuals. I'd be happy if we can get the visual fidelity of quality at 60 that would be awesome. Edit: also chapter 3 is where I switched to quality in order to get more consistent frame rates. As john linemann from digital foundry said; it’s a niche product for console enthusiasts, most people who ran their mouths online about the price etc already owns a ps5 anyways. For people who don’t own a PS5 or would want a better console experience - the PS5 pro speaks to me in every way 😌
I'm still shocked that they didn't even bother advertising the 2TB in the video. With that price you should be shouting every justification possible. (But no, they'd rather gaslight about excluding the stand.)
Great stuff, Michael. Cerny smart as usual. 699 is pretty great value for the image it will bring to large 4K TV’s. ML upscaling is the real sauce. As it is for Nvidia. And crucial as UE5 is now the default engine for mainstream game development… One correction. The data is 75% of people use performance mode.
$700 is a lot of money, but the Series X with 2tb hd is priced at $600 so the PS5 Pro with almost double the power is $100 more. Expensive, but it makes sense in comparison.
Exactly. It's been treated like Sony is forcing the Pro on you, like they're raising government taxes worldwide or something. It's a fucking optional more powerful upgrade. Not for you? let me present you the standard and cheaper PS5.
That's not the problem, the problem is that the PS5 has failed to live up to Sony's promises and so now they want me to splash out even more money to get closer to what they said PS5 would achieve. We promise, it really is 4k/60 this time*

Otherwise Astrobot would be softening and rounding off or sweetening the price factor.... @@antwango the PS6 will be nothing like the PS5 pro tho. The only thing that might be transferred over is pssr upscaling. They need more supported 3rd party games , especially those with unreal engine 5. Those were the titles that really struggled with image quality on PS5 on performance mode
I was expecting ~$650 with the disc drive, although I wasn't expecting 2TB of storage, which is something Cerny really should have emphasized in that presentation that seemed very dumbed down by PR people.
Everyone moaning about the cost needs to get a life. You do not have to buy this. Nothing has changed. You don’t like it buy a standard PS5. You can afford it you get the pro. It isn’t great value, it is overpriced but if you want the best PlayStation experience here it is. And no you can’t fully build an equivalently powerful pc for the same money. You can buy a graphics card for the same sort of money.
This mid gen upgrade is pretty steep price wise but im looking to get one And atleast when ps6 comes around devs will have had more experience with pssr
CNET reviewer that was with Mark Cerny, said that, there will be 50 games at launch of PS5 Pro, that will definitely see a boost. Those 50 games could possibly be games that already have patches ready to go on day one drop of the PS5 Pro, maybe? CNET Video - "My Exclusive PlayStation 5 Pro Demo: What $699 Gets You, And Why It Matters" @3:20
I don't think price is a problem. £700 You get a 2TB SSD which alone is about £150 - £180 It's far more powerful. Breaks the horrible barrier where we had to sacrifice graphics for fps, or fps for graphics. But the fact that it doesn't have a cheap stand with it...and the disk drive is an optional extra..is pathetic
How is £699 suddenly extraordinarily high compared to the price of everyday gadgets we use nowadays? Most peoples phones or PC used to write a comment are far more expensive. It's nonsensical.
I just hope a lot of devs choose to inject PSSR into their older PS4 and PS5 titles because image quality on older games is ripe for improvement with an ML based upscaling technique. Hundreds of older games could be made to appear native 4k.
I can’t justify the high price point. If it came with a disc drive (that doesn’t need an online check in on installation…) and Mark Cerny was like ‘Oh yeah, you can pop in any PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 or PS5 disc and it’ll play natively’ then I’d already be standing in line. As it is, it doesn’t do enough to be worth $700 (or $780 if you don’t have a disc drive).
It’s not only gpu upgrade which is 45% but also the upscaling so in result they can run 4k30 games at 60fps! Don’t let disc drive alone be a deal breaker
And that is your prerogative. Get a PS5 or keep the one that you already have. This is an optional console. A small percentage of the PS5 audiance will get it...The immense majority will stay on the base hardware.
Excellent video as usual brother. However, I have to make a correction to something you said, i.e. that we in the the UK pay more. It seems like we do, because of the exchange rate, but people don’t factor in that our prices include all associated TAX as well. Whereas the US, they will have to pay TAX in addition to the $700 price, therefore the cost is almost identical when you consider the full price out of pocket.
You know... I don't get what the big deal is. Adjusting for inflation, the pro isn't more expensive than game consoles years ago. Ps1 would now be $650, sega saturn at $820, Xbox 360 at $660, ps3 20gb at $800. $699 is average. At least it's not like the 60gb ps3 at a wopping $960 in today's money. And that didn't offer any performance improvements. The PS5 pro is a premium luxury that has better performance. It's not cheap, it's not overpriced, it's just normal. Now, some people will point out the reason why 799 is too much is because the base ps5 is half that price. But that's because consoles have never been as cheap as they are today because Sony, as well as many other manufactures in recent years, just eat the cost, even make a loss for every system sold and make up for it through software sales. So when they release a more expensive system for cheap, since profits are determined by software, not the hardware, how would that make more money than what the base PS5 couldn't do in the first place? The PS5 Pro needs to either actually make money for each sale, or at the very least, lose less money than the standard PS5 in order to justify its existence.
Fantastic video NX. You are one of the better channels on RUclips. Explains well and focuses on what the aim with the tech is. I mean, i want it, but in the UK a PS5 Pro, disc drive and the stand costs .... $1077. it sucks that uk always get the most shafted. That being said, this is not a Sony problem, this is 2024 inflation, worldwirde across all products. $699 for this perfomance is still likely the best money can buy. A $699 PC isnt going to hit this level of fidelity.
Won't have hardly any demand, scalpers will test the waters at first and once they realize they can't shed their inventory, the scalping will be a brief moment in time
You guys really need to quit whining about the price in USA and England for the Pro though as locally in Australia it will be $1199 for base version and $1,349 if you add the drive lol. Now that is insanity as a 4060 laptop is only around that same money in sales.
I'm buying it, just as PC gamers buy 4090s and some. The upgrades are subjective. Alan Wake 2 and FF Rebirth are awesome to get new upgrades. I look forward to FF16 getting a 5 Pro update as well. Get get what you pay for, and this is more worth it than PS4 Pro
Yeah, you buy what you want in the end. One time I thought I would, but I won't. I don't want to send the wrong message. I wouldn't agree with the last sentence. PS4 Pro was twice the power than OG, not 45% and it cost the same launch to launch AFAIR.

You can't say the same for the phone in your pocket 😂 it's for enthusiasts
Not for me - happy with my £200 android phone with amoled 120hz display for last 3 years. I'm just not feeling drawn to getting the extra performance for such a high costing. Its also unclear what benefits the boost mode will bring to titles outside of Sony exclusives.
I don't think consoles market to enthusiasts whatsoever, they'll just buy a PC. At the end of the day, it's still a very mediocre GPU, especially for 4k.
LOL not really, I buy mid-range phones and switch up every 3-4 years because they are full of memory or running like garbage because of the increasing bloating of android or app developers not optimizing their apps wanting the higher specs new phones to brute force it.
The sales stats from just Samsung and Apple would say you guys are in the minority of people in this example. Even then, people still hold on to their consoles for 7+ years making the price/performance/year a good bargin.
I think it's a fair price, i am a pc gamer, so maybe im just used to dropping a lot on a gpu to game at 4k. I don't mind the price. The no disc drive doesn't bother me. i haven't had one on any of my computers for a long time, lol. I'll probably pre-order one.
Some games share the exact same feature set between fidelity mode and performance mode. For example a game in fidelity mode might be rendering native 4K at 30fps while the performance mode is rendering the same feature set but at 1080p 60fps. With the PS5 Pro you can take that 1080p image and use the additional GPU performance to add more effects and add ray tracing while rendering that 1080p image in the same frame time. Now you can use PSSR to upscale that to 4K. The end result is 4K 60 with more effects and ray tracing while the fidelity mode on the base PS5 is 4K 30fps with less effects and no ray tracing. That is a big step up.
Marketing a PS5 Pro might be difficult when the graphical fidelity differences might be difficult to show otherwise than in person and, ideally, side by side with a PS5 version. That said, I'm vers skeptical about the promise here (Quality mode or even slightly better at 60 fps). In performance mode a lot of games sometimes fall into the 40fps because of the CPU. I'm affraid it won't be vers different here
I’ll buy one; it’s pretty much what we (people who it’s targeted to) was expecting; Gt7 and GTA 6, can’t wait to play (I want to know the psvr2 enhancements though, wish they talked about that)

I wonder what this means for ps6. If they want to improve gpu performance over ps5 pro they will need to ask the same price because at 500 $ it will perform the same at best.
CNET actually got invited to Sony to see it live and they said there are 50 plus enhanced titles at launch and the disc drive is the same as the slim so if anyone already has a slim they can use that one apparently which would be a saving for some. It also comes with 2 TB which is pretty cool as most people already have at least a 2TB expansion as they were so cheap. There is no word of enhanced textures over base PS5 either so games may not really take up all that much more space is my guess.
Thanks Michael, a well structured and measured analysis of the announcement. Whilst the PS5 Pro will clearly be a step up from the base console, I do wonder how many casual users will think it worthwhile investing (particularly with the price premium vs the standard PS5). Apparently stats for the PS4 Pro after launch show it sold 20:80 compared to the PS4 slim, and I have a feeling the PS5 Pro will be lower than that - not just based on the price, but also the perception of what value the updated console will give consumers vs the base model. I just don't think there is that step up in visible technical performance that you got going from PS4 to PS4 Pro, especially with the launch and uptake of 4K TVs around that time. The video game market in general has bucked the trend when it comes to inflation-based price increases - especially with the games. Who else remembers Turok launching on the N64 for £65? And I certainly remember buying FIFA98 for £55 from good ol' Woolies when it came out! With the cost of game development sky rocketing in recent years, I guess the margins just aren't there any more to heavily subsidise the console cost, hence we are starting to see the prices increase to reflect what they theoretically should be (the £300 cost for the PS1 in 1995 equates to £720 in 2024 taking inflation into account). The lack of disc-drive from the core PS5 Pro is pretty galling, and if I were to upgrade (which I am in 2 minds about currently - I will certainly wait until the new year and see where everything sits), I am unsure if I would pay the additional for the few games I do own physically now as well as a limited number of blu-rays and 4k blu-rays. I would like Sony to provide the option of a bundled console, even if it does cost a bit more. Ultimately it's a niche product for a select core of gamers, and sales will reflect that. My only concern is how this will reflect in the price of the Playstation 6 when Sony decides to launch in a few years time..
While I understand the disappointment over the price, I expect the PS5 Pro to do well enough. The same grumbles from games press accompanied the PS4 Pro, which turned out to be a great machine. It’s pretty much what I wanted and expected, games at 60fps looking closer to fidelity modes. That 2/3rds of gamers opting for performance modes will inform devs when it comes to speccing forthcoming projects. And yeah… GTA5 might well wind up running at 30fps, but gamers won’t like it. Although perhaps offering 40fps modes may well become the concession where cpu does become the limiting factor.
The difference with Apple is you can buy some of their most popular items with a contract so you can pay over 2 years. Even with a trade in of the PS5 it's more expensive than the launch price of the PS5
Amazing content as always Michael. The $700 will be a hard pill to swallow but the specs back them. Just with the 2tb internal ssd we knew it was gonna be expensive, well to get a second job it is then 😂
Even if the vrr range is expanded, I'm hoping for at least 40gb like Serues X. Dropping to 4:2:2 chroma for 120hz is noticeable compared to RGB or 4:4:4. It would also help those with tvs that don't switch HDMI black level correctly because it wouldn't occur.

That's one game I'd like to see what the Pro could do. If you turn quality mode on it looks incredible. Performance is much smoother but you can see the hit you take to visuals. I'd be happy if we can get the visual fidelity of quality at 60 that would be awesome.

Great stuff, Michael. Cerny smart as usual. 699 is pretty great value for the image it will bring to large 4K TV’s. ML upscaling is the real sauce. As it is for Nvidia. And crucial as UE5 is now the default engine for mainstream game development…

Yes.
This mid gen upgrade is pretty steep price wise but im looking to get one
And atleast when ps6 comes around devs will have had more experience with pssr
CNET reviewer that was with Mark Cerny, said that, there will be 50 games at launch of PS5 Pro, that will definitely see a boost. Those 50 games could possibly be games that already have patches ready to go on day one drop of the PS5 Pro, maybe?
CNET Video - "My Exclusive PlayStation 5 Pro Demo: What $699 Gets You, And Why It Matters" @3:20
I don't think price is a problem. £700
You get a 2TB SSD which alone is about £150 - £180
It's far more powerful.
Don’t let disc drive alone be a deal breaker
agreed, finally someone in the comments section who isn't a complete moron who enjoys throwing away money
So don't buy it and buy a regular PS5. Plenty of people have enough money to buy the pro.
And that is your prerogative. Get a PS5 or keep the one that you already have. This is an optional console. A small percentage of the PS5 audiance will get it...The immense majority will stay on the base hardware.
The disc is a bummer but it’s a one time activation fortunately

Nx Gamer aka Geoff Keighley of games performance comparison RUclipsr.
Even with a trade in of the PS5 it's more expensive than the launch price of the PS5
you cant play games on apple
Is the psvr2 have any improvements with the PlayStation pro?
They said so yeah, with pssr through a patch
“Please buy the external drive to send sony the message that they can do a ton of money not including a drive in their next console”
Amazing content as always Michael. The $700 will be a hard pill to swallow but the specs back them. Just with the 2tb internal ssd we knew it was gonna be expensive, well to get a second job it is then 😂
I wonder what hdmi 2.1 bandwidth going to be? The base PS5 is 32Gbps. Will the Pro also have a better VRR range?
sony. no.
I have a feeling it will have a better range.
