I feel like most reactors don't actually play volleyball so they don't even realize how much Hinata lacks in fundamentals until they are watching season 4. Being a good spiker is not the same as being a well-rounded player like Ushijima. Ushijima was brutally honest, but he was not incorrect.

I have to add that lefty are very often getting "fixed" in japan (it's the word they use), they are usually forced by everyone else including family and school to become right hander as soon as possible. That's why lefty are so rare in japan and why Nishinoya have so few experience against them. Of course, this is becoming rarer every year now, but the more traditionnal the family is, the more common it is.

Japan specifically teaches everyone to write and hold chopsticks right-handedly at school and home, so I can imagine left-handedness in teenage years and adulthood being rare after a childhood of getting your hand slapped for holding your chopsticks wrong. Makes for an easy signifier of talent and being special in anime and manga, though, to have a character be left-handed. It's almost a superpower in anime/manga about sports and games that require hands, like volleyball and karuta.

Despite not even being a volleyball player, the lessons you teach, the stories you tell, and the analysis you give are all super helpful to me as an athlete. Volleyball and wrestling are very different sports, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have similarities! There are some lessons and concepts that all athletes would do well to learn, and you do such a good job of bringing those lessons to athletes like me. So his name is Ushijima Wakatoshi, but some players call him Ushiwaka (this being a combination of his name "Ushi" from Ushijima and "Waka" from Wakatoshi, thus Ushiwaka).
Also, check if your bad memories are based on sports themselves or the people you were playing with. Sometimes it's a matter of finding the right group of people :)
I think the episodes about Asahi early in S1 are pretty spot on. One way to think about it is that you might have some mistakes/losses but you have good days too, right? Remember the times you get it right/win and know that you can do it again.
I know you asked for Coach Donny's opinion, but here is my 2 cents on this matter. For me, it's consistently putting myself in that same state of mind I was in. In a sense, reliving the moment. In doing that I become numb to the things that made it a terrifying situation, and scrutinise it to see if there was something I could learn from it. At times it's because I made the wrong judgement on something. Others because I misunderstood something. However it takes time. We (more like I) prefer to close ourselves off to bad memories, so it may take time to remember. It may take a few days, weeks, months or maybe longer. But this is just my own way in dealing with bad memories (i think they call it shock therapy). Everyone is different. Some maybe strong mentally or emotionally. They may have pride in themselves that they didn't know they had. In a sense, it's kind of like a journey of finding out more of yourself.

to clarify coach: we won't be having a different OP this time because Season 3 is just 10 episodes and is entirely focused only on the finals..hence the complete title for season 3 is "Haikyuu!!: Karasuno VS Shiratorizawa"

Coach, if you can, I think it would be best if you would do dual episode reactions this season. I think it greatly enhances the viewing experience to watch this season 2 episodes at a time (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10). If you have to publish one time in two weeks its ok. It still would be worth it.
I agree. I personally don't mind waiting 2 weeks to watch a 2-episode react. However, I understand that it really depends on Coach's schedule and what he's comfortable with. Just that I hope that he knows it's an option. We'll wait! :D
The name of the left-handed is Wakatoshi Ushijima, but sometimes they call him Ushiwaka as a nickname merging the 2 firts syllabes of the name and the surname USHIjima + WAKAtoshi. So you can call him as you wish, but people normally use Ushijima, it is the most used on the anime.
This is why I loved season 3. We see coach ukai showing he knows how to coach. Specifically, the defensive planning coach ukai did to teach his team how to have a chance against shiratorizawa. Mainly, a good coach can teach team defense
There *is* a small detail I find that people usually don't, but one that I love, and it's that sometimes when nishinoya gets a dig in the audience goes "wow that was an amazing dig" but nishinoya himself still isn't satisfied with it because it was off, scenes like that happen a little bit but not enough to be too noticeable

Coach, of the reactors I have seen you have been the most educational. Haikyu touches base on all walks of life of the players, attitudes and emotions. You have given insight about taking losses, wins, doubts, and how to be better at the not just the game but in life. Teaching kids how to grow up and respond, not just it’s a loss get over it push through. Best examples would be mad dog, ishimada, Yamaguchi. Idk how else to explain but you hit every aspect of it. Not just a game it’s a way of life!

When I first watched haikyuu! I knew nothing about volleyball but ever since I finished the show I learned a lot . I really love how they explain it so you can understand as you watch the show.
I love that Suga got riled up to divert the nervous energy. Seeing someone far more nervous than you are might actually help alleviate some of that anxiety. I remember watching college classmates being nervous wrecks during practical exams and in a way it made me feel a sense of camaraderie and made me feel less nervous.
I got to watch Hawaii women's college volleyball V.S Texas A&M university and now I get to watch coach Donny react to Haikyuu!! What a great volleyball filled day!!!
The whole seson is dedicated for one fight, Karasuna vs Shiratorizawa, its only 10 episodes but every single one is great and contains tons of god-like actions

Coach, thanks to you I mustered up the courage to sign up for the informational meeting for my university’s volleyball club. I’m still apprehensive about it because they said that it’s as intense and competitive as the students make it since it’s student ran. Plus I’ve never played a team sport before or any sport seriously for that matter outside of gym class but I am grateful for all of the kind and encouraging words you bestow upon us viewers in every single one of your videos. Without those encouragements, and the help of a friend, I don’t think I would’ve been able to walk up to the club sport stand at our organization fair and act on my growing interest in volleyball. Admittedly this slight penchant for volleyball started from watching Haikyuu but it’s festered even more from watching your videos and being told that it’s never too late to try something new. Also, check if your bad memories are based on sports themselves or the people you were playing with. Sometimes it's a matter of finding the right group of people :)
I think the episodes about Asahi early in S1 are pretty spot on. One way to think about it is that you might have some mistakes/losses but you have good days too, right? Remember the times you get it right/win and know that you can do it again.
I know you asked for Coach Donny's opinion, but here is my 2 cents on this matter.
For me, it's consistently putting myself in that same state of mind I was in. In a sense, reliving the moment. In doing that I become numb to the things that made it a terrifying situation, and scrutinise it to see if there was something I could learn from it. At times it's because I made the wrong judgement on something. Others because I misunderstood something. However it takes time. We (more like I) prefer to close ourselves off to bad memories, so it may take time to remember. It may take a few days, weeks, months or maybe longer.
But this is just my own way in dealing with bad memories (i think they call it shock therapy). Everyone is different. Some maybe strong mentally or emotionally. They may have pride in themselves that they didn't know they had. In a sense, it's kind of like a journey of finding out more of yourself.
I always get goosebumps from Nishinoya saying “Come one Bring It!”

Huh. I just noticed that when Ushijima serves the first time and when Daichi tries to catch it, he tries to forcefully kill the spin of the ball by moving his hands in a manner directly opposite to the spin( if someone could explain this better, please do )

Greetings Coach, at 13:34 you talk about bouncing back and forth between Ushijima and Ushiwaka and yes, they are both correct. Ushiwaka is the abbreviation of his name Ushijima Wakatoshi therefore "Ushi" and "Waka". Ushiwaka is also the childhood name of the most famous/legendary samurai in japan.

to clarify coach: we won't be having a different OP this time because Season 3 is just 10 episodes and is entirely focused only on the finals..hence the complete title for season 3 is "Haikyuu!!: Karasuno VS Shiratorizawa"
His name is Ushijima Wakatoshi, so they've been combining his names to "Ushiwaka", that's why it's so confusing to figure out what to call him at first

Coach, if you can, I think it would be best if you would do dual episode reactions this season. I think it greatly enhances the viewing experience to watch this season 2 episodes at a time (1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-10). If you have to publish one time in two weeks its ok. It still would be worth it.
I agree. I personally don't mind waiting 2 weeks to watch a 2-episode react. However, I understand that it really depends on Coach's schedule and what he's comfortable with. Just that I hope that he knows it's an option. We'll wait! :D
The name of the left-handed is Wakatoshi Ushijima, but sometimes they call him Ushiwaka as a nickname merging the 2 firts syllabes of the name and the surname USHIjima + WAKAtoshi. So you can call him as you wish, but people normally use Ushijima, it is the most used on the anime.
This is why I loved season 3. We see coach ukai showing he knows how to coach. Specifically, the defensive planning coach ukai did to teach his team how to have a chance against shiratorizawa.
Mainly, a good coach can teach team defense
There *is* a small detail I find that people usually don't, but one that I love, and it's that sometimes when nishinoya gets a dig in the audience goes "wow that was an amazing dig" but nishinoya himself still isn't satisfied with it because it was off, scenes like that happen a little bit but not enough to be too noticeable

What you said about waiting around the block a bit longer is basically the same about what coach Ukai said about timing in the time out. Flashback to the blocking lessons in season 2 when Tsukki ask how to block someone stronger/bigger than you.

Coach, in case you are not aware. This season you are watching now (season 3) is only dedicated for Shiratorizawa vs. Karasuno and only have 10 episodes unlike the previous seasons ( 1 and 2) that contains 25 episodes. Additionally, season 4 have 25 episodes too like season 1 and 2

Coach, of the reactors I have seen you have been the most educational. Haikyu touches base on all walks of life of the players, attitudes and emotions. You have given insight about taking losses, wins, doubts, and how to be better at the not just the game but in life. Teaching kids how to grow up and respond, not just it’s a loss get over it push through. Best examples would be mad dog, ishimada, Yamaguchi. Idk how else to explain but you hit every aspect of it.

17:34 In this scene is very important the impact Nishinoya has on Tsukki: Tsukki was giving up the set just after losing the previous block were he thought "I just assumed I would lose as it was the truth", but then he sees Nishinoya that wants to fight this point with confidence: he was very surprised by his determination, even more after getting the point. After rewatching this moment I got the feeling that Tsukki's performance and attitude during the rest the match changed completely. I found it fascinating how can anyone change by inspiring from others.

When I first watched haikyuu! I knew nothing about volleyball but ever since I finished the show I learned a lot . I really love how they explain it so you can understand as you watch the show.
I love that Suga got riled up to divert the nervous energy. Seeing someone far more nervous than you are might actually help alleviate some of that anxiety. I remember watching college classmates being nervous wrecks during practical exams and in a way it made me feel a sense of camaraderie and made me feel less nervous.

I could physically never be a volleyball player(Can explain), but i enjoy watching your videos so much! I saw a 'libero needed' poster in my school and instantly thought of you. Your commentary is easy to understand and you make the learning fun!
Coach, thanks to you I mustered up the courage to sign up for the informational meeting for my university’s volleyball club. I’m still apprehensive about it because they said that it’s as intense and competitive as the students make it since it’s student ran. Plus I’ve never played a team sport before or any sport seriously for that matter outside of gym class but I am grateful for all of the kind and encouraging words you bestow upon us viewers in every single one of your videos. Without those encouragements, and the help of a friend, I don’t think I would’ve been able to walk up to the club sport stand at our organization fair and act on my growing interest in volleyball. Admittedly this slight penchant for volleyball started from watching Haikyuu but it’s festered even more from watching your videos and being told that it’s never too late to try something new. Thank you for helping me find courage and being the voice of reason to nudge me one step closer to a new, and hopefully great, experience.
