    "Both teams deserve to win."
This. This is why I fell in love with this series. They don't purposely glorify the main character & the main team we follow, but they really show the strengths and flaws of all the characters and teams. You end up genuinely rooting for so many other teams even though you know this anime is about Karasuno.

I think it’s mostly because of budget and time constraints. Haikyuu was coming out with 2x more episodes a year compared to most other anime and the seijoh game had a lot of scenes where the animation went off, so they probably had to allocate their resources.

Lmao. But I feel like this animator does that simple shit on purpose. Like. I disagree wholeheartedly that season 4 animation is trash. It's different, for sure, but I really dig it at times. Certain places where stills are distorted to the point of almost being ugly literally affected my mood, made me truly feel how gritty and grimy the matches were.

      @serenecj 3 года назад +18

@@Saku_607 so I am not an expert. But I gotta say again, I'm pretty sure the simplicity of the scenes coach referenced is fully intentional. The mood of the scenes where this simplicity is placed and what is happening when these lines go a little "lax" feel too appropriate to not be intentional. I think the second time coach brought it up was during a celebration scene that followed a hard won point and the contrast in the intensity almost felt like an exhalation of relief after being tensed for the moment. It feels too intentionally placed not to be a conscious choice. Also, it's simple but not BAD. I've seen really bad and "rushed" stuff from anime like 7 deadly sins or black clover and...the result wasn't just simple. It was outright bad. It feels unfair to lump any part of haikyuu in with that

Coach, as you can see at the last rally, the animation is the same with Season 1 Episode 24 where they lost to Aoba.
But instead of closed eyes, Hinata's eyes was wide open and he's looking for a way where to hit the ball. And instead of floaty spin of the ball (season 1), Kageyama's toss was now more skilled. The ball also changed, from Molten to Mikasa.

I think it is cool that in addition to just understanding that Oikawa is amazing, Hinata notices that Kageyama is going into his mode, where he starts to compare and underestimate himself (28:46 - 28:51). It was Kindaichi's sharp slide attack, which Oikawa managed to bring up from him. Something Kageyama didn't see and couldn't do himself.
That's why he goes as "Do you really understand that?" and Hinata proceeds with (loose interpretation) "Nah, I just read it on your face (besides the obvious)". And after that brings up this iconic phrase.

Sometimes it's just a random person who sees themselves and see their past self in you. People willing to break down walls are always important but a person who does it with zero selfish motivation behind it is a person, or character, I look up to. Mad Dogs backstory is short and concise but it always gets me teary-eyed when his mentor says "Looks like a good team. Face them properly." The weak animation shots is actually a good indication of budget being used for a big shot later on in the series or episode. A thing about Japanese animation is that it's always the same budget no matter how epic the episode is so in order for those epic moments to get the respect it deserves they have to sacrifice shots by outsourcing or rushing it through the juniors.

Had to comment just for that last rally. It's incredibly poetic how:
    - every member of both teams touched the ball in that rally, "Six who are strong is stronger!"
    - Oikawa's desperation is shown when he almost slips on the cloth while getting back to the game
    - Mad Dog actually trying so hard to get the ball, embodying how much he is now a part of the team
    - The parallel in animation between S1 toss and block loss to S2 open eye aiming win; how much progress our boys have made!
    - "Talent is something you make bloom. Instinct is something you polish." One of the best quotes in the entire series and seriously encapsulates Oikawa's character persona to the T. His entire inferiority complex led to self discovery and to this conclusion. It's amazing.
    - The shrouded coach Oikawa talked to who gave him a moment of clarity about how he's yet to reach his potential, and how you can't just call your current state your peak: this is excellent, excellent foreshadowing for someone like Oikawa who has failed countless times to attain his goal.
    AND
    - The moment it hits you that Oikawa has never, will never make it to a Japanese national volleyball tournament as a student. He inevitably loses out on scouting opportunities (seriously missing out on peak talent and hard work here!) and has to start much lower in the hierarchy of recruitment because he hasn't had more exposure. Which leads me to the previous bullet point....
Season 3 will be amazing as well, but Oikawa's personal journey embodied in S1 and S2 is something special that S3's characters don't have. In fact, S3 characters are like... the opposite of Oikawa's characteristics.

  • @Crystantemum

#6 on Seijoh, Yahaba, is their back-up setter. It's overshadowed because of Mad Dogs backstory and focus but the Coach noticed Yahaba take a leadership role with his words to Kyotani (Mad Dog.) Also just like the "double-edged sword" tactic of putting Mad Dog in a few episodes back, the same thing happened here by putting Yahaba in and seeing if the rough connection between the two can translate to the court. Also also he really looks up to Oikawa so he's working on his serves (the reason he came in as a pinch server)
Overall, Seijohs coach is a really thoughtful guy but a man of few words that, instead of telling his team, puts them in a position earn their accolades themselves

48:57 dang i can really feel oikawa's frustration in his "i know line" when kageyama dumped the ball and he wasn't able to save it and had flashbacks. it's him recognizing and admitting that kageyama is indeed a grear setter. that him doing a successful dump shouldn't be that much surprise as he knows kageyama is exponentially growing.
throughout his vb journey, he was always crushed by ushijima (shiratorizawa). so ofc you'll have that frustration of losing despite working your butt off. and then here comes a genius-kageyama. in his flashback, he was frustrated enough w ushijima and here's someone who seemingly can surpass him any moment. it was frustrating to be always the second best (not winning against ushijima's team) and having a genius around you that has the same goal w you. and i think his overall frustration comes w them having such gifts while on the other hand, he has to do double effort just so he could beat them (ofc i also recognize ushijima and kageyama's hard work). i rmbr watching one analysis vid about oikawa which is entitled as the curse of the ordinary which explains very well of oikawa's side.

WOOOO DOUBLE EPISODE! Thanks Coach! We're having a volleyball windfall this week between this and all your olympic commentary!
(At first impression, viewers might mistake Mad Dog as the scary one, but long term fans know that the one most likely to be arrested for getting into a bar fight is #6 Yahaba).

"If you think it'll never come, it probably never will"
One of my absolute favorite quotes from this whole series. It really captivates everything that Oikawa believes. He has decided to stop complaining that people were born with more talent than him and just get as good as he possibly can. He doesn't believe that he'll never be able to reach Kageyama's level. He keeps pushing, no matter the obstacle. That's why the ending was so important. It showed him pushing his limits to read exactly where Hinata was going to hit. He kept believing his time would come to improve even more, and it did.

The first half of season 4 is actually good, only in the second half a couple of episodes were poorly animated. The change in animation style is what bothers some people but i really like it. It is after all made to look closer to the manga art style, which I absolutely love. The plot, characters and soundtrack way overshadow anything that S4 might lack! 😁

I always admire that the Mangaka can figure out how to do the rotations right for maximum drama. Figuring out how to incorporate story beats into the game is actually really impressive and i imagine that he has a massive storyboard just consisting of player positions, very impressive.

A little thing that not a lot of people notice is that the same guys who remembered Yamaguchi as a scaredy cat in set 2 of this game and originally for his failure in season 1 are in the stands for his substitution here, and their tone has changed a bit.
"There's the scaredy cat pinch server from the Wakunan game," becomes, "Their's the pinch server that got five in a row before!"
Its a small scene, but its such an interesting way of highlighting how much perspectives can change based on your actions.
