1993 Ski Doo Mach Z --- original first year Ski Doo Triple-Triple Muscle Sled -- one of 600 built

  • In 1993, Ski Doo upped the ante with their Mach 1 twin-cylinder go-fast.
The Mach Z was a spring order-only machine, with only 600 built. (The first Mach Z had a fiberglass hood that was replaced with plastic in the following years.)
The 774 cc engine features a reed valve intake with RAVE variable exhaust valves, triple pipes, and flatside Mikuni TM 38 carbs. Note that the Rotary valve was out on this new Ski Doo.
The factory-equipped skis were metal on top, but plastic on the ski bottoms. The F2000 chassis included a DSA (Direct Shock Action) trailing arm front suspension. Compared to other F2000-based models, heavier springs were added for its triple-cylinder engine. Out back, there were three shocks in the rear suspension.
NOTE -- in the video, I miss-spoke about the engine displacement. It is 774 cc (780 type)

Nice survivor. Yes the Rotax engine was the first with Exhaust valves. The RAVE debuted in 1989 on the Mach 1 580. The Mach Z would have been the first triple

Man these are awesome. Had a few 90's skidoos incl a 97 mxz 440, 99 Mach z 800 and 97 Mach 3.. had newer backcountries too but amazes me when I get on one, the power they have. Even newer ones arnt as snappy over 20 years of tech later. My favorite Era of skidoos

I come from a northern place where lakes are safe from september to April. And so Ski-Doo used to send prototypes to that place. Spray painted a uniform color without names or stickers. And the tests pilots had a day team and a night team. They were not allowed to shutdown the machine ever for the whole winter. They would ride in trails or race the machines. After a while we'd know somethings up with the green one for exemple as it was digging trenches while most of us plebs would ride along on Skandic, Bravo, Tundra's and Formula Plus.

I am guessing most Mach owners had better luck than my Dad in 93. After LOVING his 92, it was a foregone conclusion he would upgrade to the new Mach Z. He switched brands that year because he was left stranded at least 3 or 4 times in his first 6 or 7 trips. Snowmobile guys are unrelenting taunters and Dad had enough. Sometimes you just get a lemon. The sombitch just wouldn't run. Dealer couldn't figure it out.
My favourite sled that I have ever driven was his 1992, 617 Mach 1. Loved that matchine. The look, the seat, the mid range.

Back in November 1992 I was lucky enough to have bought one of 18 built for the northeast,, it was delivered on December 18th 1992,,I remember right from the start the cylinder would drop when full throttle was applied all the time,, skidoo knew of this problem,,I was told to run one heat range hotter plug br8,it helped a lot,I remember Lanny Benoit put a 580/380 clutch spring in the tra, got rid of the junk comet, what a hole shot that spring did I can honestly say I was never beat in a race, I had a race track on it with stud mounts welded to the track clips that was the secret for out of the hole acceleration no track spin at all,,God so long ago, still have great memories of that sled

@1000machz Lanny had a lot of knowledge on how to make them fast,, he and the race shop and Larry from the crank shop made them run,,he had a small sleeve he would put into the end of the exhaust on the 583,617,and 670s which made more back pressure ever notice from old films Lanny was gone from the start he would take the high side and drop down at the start of a race and never lost the first place position, he also would use nickosil cylinders while others didn't have at the time

My uncle has one lake race ready with 1200+ lake race miles. My customized 01' SX-R700(Clutch kits on both/jetting/stock exhaustw/benderCan/Studded ripsaw/Reed spacers &VF3. I still cannot beat his rig on a lake😂.
A kid stopped@ the shop one day with his new 800 doo claimed his sled is faster than both of us. We just shrugged it off while we worked on my barnfind Jag440LT.
He kept stopping by challenging him, all he said you don't know your wet behind your ears still.
One day he stopped by and called our sleds trashy slow triples suck "I got 1G you can't beat me"
My uncle told him next week on this long lake end to end.
We tore down both sleds and changed parts that needed changing ie engine seals, bearings, and new fuel lines. My uncle tuned both our sleds making a few practice runs. He showed up, took our marks, his sled had the holeshot, my uncle caught up first me right behind and we just started walking away. Kid didn't have anything else to say about our trashy slow triples😂

Grunty, and smooth when they are closed, but brother, once you hit that flipper and open them RAVE valves fully, Hang On! I had a 1992 MACH ONE 617cc with RAVE. LOVED that sled!

I’ve seen 20 year old DSL triples give new sleds fits at the grass drags. Between that sled and the really old 6000/5000 500cc Cat leaf spring twins have caused more newer sled guys to throw tool boxes at amature drags than any other models. I love a good Q ship.

Very cool. It's too bad that this sled didn't get its own media cycle like the vmax 4 did. But Cat completely dominated the news that year with the tcat. This z may have only had 600 units that year but this (and the mx with the same chassis), was a style that would go on to be used for a long time. This was essentially all new. It signaled the end of prs, ushered in a decade of triples, and was radically different from the Mach 1.

i remember when these first came out. Was at a local snowmobile derby and it never made it home. Was sitting on the side of the hiway to be picked up. Earlier in the day it had a coolant leak and we put stop leak into the reservoir. Was a short term fix i guess. Did not realize they were that rare. That is the thing about collectibles. if they were problematic they are even more desirable now. An example would be the formula plus with efi. They would barely run but i bet they are worth something now.

Yes it had a comet clutch that skidoo called the F3, it was junk,, i was lucky enough to have been able to buy one of only 18 that were built for the northeast,,i was with friends at the grand prix de Valcourt snowmobile races in February of 1993 I had the machz, and I remember we were on the trails and I heard a bang, we stopped and I could see where something hit the belt guard sure enough a clutch arm broke off,, as luck would have it there is a skidoo dealer right across from the skidoo factory, we all went there and they brought the sled in immediately and they sent a mechanic over to the factory and he came back with a new comet clutch was back on the trails in 30 minutes,, those clutches could not tolerate the harmonics of the engine

Ahh the 97 Mach Z 800 triple was the fastest and had the highest hp hence that's why ski doo quit making the 780 went to the 800 triple u put a stock 93 780 Mach Z against a stock 97 Mach Z 800 triple that 800 will walk all over that 780 I know I've seen it happen plenty of times theres I know I seen them at the grass drags and ice drags the 97 800 triple Mach Z wins every time
