Reading Dilla Time, page 205 Dan Charnas writes how Dilla dragged his feet almost missing the deadline for this remix, then threw it together at the last minute! This book needs to be an audio book with all the music as you read along… 😍 🔥
I’m currently on this page and when I read how House Shoes was rofl I had to look this track up! I can see why he was cracking tf up but man if J Dilla didn’t do this remix this track would be ass juice.
You and I are truly akin, only a few know bout this 2000’s period, and I believe this was a really special period where DILLA made his mark amongst a few others. I really Luv that whole Jay Dee, pre DILLA era!
I revisit this song quite often every year. I remember the day I was put on to SV in 2006 same year he passed. I always heard his beats but never knew it was him “that sound, that archetype “ then I started researching him to only be sadden by his passing that same year. Since then been digging through all of his works from the Pharcyde, Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, Common. Easily my favorite producer and rapper combo of all time. No one comes close. R.I.P. Dilla “Yeah”
I heard a promo of donuts being played in the record store I used to frequent before it was released. Got it from the owner and played the hell out of it only to be saddened as well. I still go down the rabbit hole usually once a year.
I can tell it’s from early 2000’s, but that has nothing to do with sounding dated because apparently early 2000’s was the future. You gotta go backwards to go forwards now.
One of my FAV tracks from dilla (those sine chords layed in the back...then that low-guitar sample durin the chorus...smh). He was in a dope ass zone around this time...but as he did often, he switched up his shit once the "clones" gravitated toward this style.
Dope Dilla face sticker on my back windshield rollin' around Detroit showing respect like I'm spose to. Dilla will always be our Hometown Hero! Rest In Beats
Funny how Dilla put off working on this remix as long as possible and then it turns out to be one of his sickest remixes of all. The delicate vocal of the hard drums sounds perfect.
One of the dopest tracks to ride out to; windows half mast, the night breeze smelling thick and warm like hot pavement. Amber street lights whiz by and rhythmicly flicker against the body of the car as you follows the traces of orange and red taillights against a dark slick pavement. "Turn it up."
You ain't kiddin my man. You put me right there in the summer driving through downtown Detroit on my way home from a date with the woman I married 16 years ago. Head bobbin and a smile on my face!
Ridiculous!!! J-Dilla, so much creavitity, so much talent, and so much soul!!! Every time I hear his music, it inspires me get up in the lab and bang out some tracks.
Top 4 fave j dilla beats of all time…turn it up yall!!! Spacek was a beast! Dilla should of split this with Steve on his debut lp…Imagine this on the shining?
It's great that Dilla Time is connecting with so many. Bringing folks to this music. This is also for those that were bumping this in their whips back then...
I have heard about 3 versions of this song and I love them all. Has anyone else heard Dwele’s cover of this or The Roots’ cover of this on the album Dilla Joints? All amazing! ❤
I remember I heard Dweles version of this maybe a year after I found this version, must have been around 2008. I feel like Dweles version is a perfect accomplice to this version ❤
I wish I could rediscover this again from scratch. Although I remember the day, I was 17 and it was summer time in the UK, I downloaded everything I could get my hands on of J Dilla, and stumbled across this gem. That was 15 years ago and this became my favourite song and still is. Strong memories
I dig the humming he drops in after the chorus builds up then drops out! good on so many levels... Crazy layers, swear it still feels like hes here living on through each one of his tracks.
What a beat!!! I feel like Willie Dynamite listening to this 🕺🏻😂. It’s Sunday afternoon, the foods cooking, I’m chilling and I find a beat like this. Thank you 🙏
I kept listening to this beat and I’m realizing he kind of used his RMI keyboard the way he used it on the “Y’all ain’t ready” on the start of this track and then he flips his own pattern into that smooth 4 count rhythm for the rest of the track. So smooooth.

I JUST LOOKED THIS UP IN THE MIDST OF READING TOO! Such an incredible look into the life of J Dilla and oh my GOD does this track go hard

Best book I’ve read in ages
Literally why I’m here lol
What up Doe from page 205! I'm reading whilst listening to Audible-there are musical footnotes but not as many as I hoped
I love that short period around 00-02 where Dilla would talk and adlib over his remixes! Just vibin to his own shit, so dope!
dope shit!

I believe it. Only real heads know about this track.
guitar pluck in the chorus pure soul wrenching
Can’t believe this shit dropped in 2000. Doesn’t sound dated at all.

This is the reason that this man will always be my no 1 producer!

That drawing is cold as hell
Check out Dwele's cover of this track (eve)
Anybody notice a little bit of "Morning Order" tucked in there?
Dan Charnas plz elaborate
UZZY that “vibrating” flute sound during the chorus (I want you I need you) is from the same song (Morning Order) that James sampled in Nag Champa.
I kept listening to this beat and I’m realizing he kind of used his RMI keyboard the way he used it on the “Y’all ain’t ready” on the start of this track and then he flips his own pattern into that smooth 4 count rhythm for the rest of the track. So smooooth.
