  • There are a lot of misconceptions about corsets, especially corsets of the Victorian era. Most people automatically think of horrible things when they hear the word 'corset' due to all the myths floating about. I like history... and clothes.... so I made this video to help dispose of all the corset LIIIIIEEEESSS!!!!

Actually, cavemen were very skilled surgeons. They would bore holes into their skulls (in a process called Trepanning) to remove evil spirits. The first known trepanned skull was from about 8,500 years ago. And most of the time the patient would survive having a massive hole in their skull and even make a full recovery (well as much of a full recovery as is possible with a hole in your head). This is also the first known surgical procedure in recorded history. To this day trepanned skull make up about 10% of all skulls found from the Neolithic age.

Also, not all European women wore corsets even though one hears that all the time. Women in the Nordics or Eastern Europe were mostly still wearing their traditional folk outfits. Even though more research is needed, most Finnish costumers think that even society ladies donned their corsets on special occasions only. That makes sense as the corsets were expensive imports or specially tailored products. In any case, regular women didn’t have money to spend on such frivolities. They DID actually wear corsets that shift organs, even if you're not tightlacing, it's just the organs go right back to their natural positions after you take the corset off for the night, which everyone did. It isn't a problem to have your organs moved a little so long as you give your body a break, and this is one of the reasons I suspect it's recommended to slowly get your body used to tightlacing if you want to do that safely: it needs to adjust to more dramatically shifting organs.

(hench why the fashion right after is all just loose tubes). Since corsetry did use quite a bit of wires, as well as bustles etc. They just didn't come into stile afterwards, as we soon went into the 2nd world war, and at that point very few people were alive (if any) who had grown up wearing them. Yes!! Corsets back in the Victorian era we’re made of baleen for the boning, this material can first be stiff, but then softens and becomes flexible with heat and moisture. There are also corsets made for more of a active lifestyle, since doing sports and just cycling were becoming very popular. Tight-lacing was also the wearers choice, much like a shoe! You choose to be in pain and to be uncomfortable for fashion (like high-heels), but you can also choose to be comfortable and loose to do day-to-day activities (like a normal shoe). Love corsets, I hope to make a corset one day :)

Yes!! Thank you! You've done the thing that I've been wanting to do! Some good people to look up for more info are Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowska. It's so frustrating seeing corsets be demonized in media, cuz I wear an Edwardian Sanakor Corset when going out. My joints are rather weak, so when walking around my spine and ribs begin to feel heavier and I begin to struggle with breathing before I'm even actually worn out. Therefore I find it ironic when people say corsets suffocate people, because for me it does the exact opposite. Without it I can last maybe about half an hour to an hour on a walk, with it I can last up to 5 hours, depending on the pace.

At some point during this era, doctors believed that stimulating an *rg*sm was a legitimate way to wake a woman after she fainted. So, many women, particularly upper class women, would "faint" so they could be brought into a special room to be "treated."

For the topic at hand though, I always knew there was something off with the popular ideas of them.
Like how could people who would supposedly faint from seeing blood or a spider at the same time be fully willing to undergo surgery in a time before neither anesthetics nor penicillin existed just for the sake of somehow looking better? I know women can think quite differently to men, but surely if that was true, we'd not associate women as fragile and needing protection, but as HARDCORSE warriors of frankly biblical proportions, and nobody would take beauty as a vanity if so many women were willing to go such lengths.

When I got fitted for a corset at a goth clothing store, they helped me try it on and when I asked about safety, they said a lot of the same things like “it shouldn’t be squeezing the life out of you, it should fit like a firm hug where you can still breathe comfortably.”they were right and it still fits great.

Well I think the reason why corsets were considered dangerous was because of the typical things that happen in modern times. For example, a woman likes a man but he got with another girl that has a bigger bust and a slimmer waist. So, to try to win that guy or try to attract other males they will try to look prettier than the other girl in which that meant tightening the corset to look slimmer. Also it was proven that corset actually did cause problems with actual medical research. However, those issues were only caused when the woman would tighten the corset to achieve an extreme slim look.

in personal experience, the most straightforward comparison to make to a corset is point shoes, and, hear me out, pointe shoes are generally depicted as painful and uncomfortable, which yes, they are quite uncomfortable, but not to the extent that people assume. there's a lot that goes into having good pointe shoes; your point shoes need to have proper padding, fit you right, be broken in, not be too soft, etc. but if all is done right the level of pain is, something you certainly need get used to, but overall tolerable. so many times will pointe shoes be depicted via ballerinas with broken toes and bleeding uncontrollably, but in reality, no one will force you to dance on broken toes, on the contrary, breaking your feet while dancing means you're doing something very wrong. (nevertheless, pointe shoes can cause problems for your feet, but those are usually only sustained by professional ballerinas who will spend hours on pointe :) ) By no means am I a professional; I might be totally wrong on my stands, but I've done pointe for about 2 years now which grants me at least a little reliability haha
