- Just another quick video on why manual transmissions are god's gift to mankind. As car guys, knowing how to drive a manual car is definitely a barrier of entry into our community.
Unfortunately, after driving a manual, you may find yourself accidentally developing some bad habits over time and some not so normal habits as well! This video is going to focus on the bizarre or 'different' things we do as manual car owners and drivers!

Bad habits moving from manual to automatic, stepping on the “clutch pedal”
Nice, relatable
When u put both feet on the brake and gas
Lol, I drove a friend's car that has a foot break....... That was a interesting scenario
I got what you mean... my brother, for this last car, bought a DSG Octavia.
The first advice i gave him was to, literally, "forget to have a left foot"
Hahah yes i make a emergency brake once xD
me: waves at fellow motorist
them: *doesnt wave back *
me: “they must drive an automatic”
ImAnActualPotato thats a jeep thing, sorry bud.
@@hexedhero6159 I have a manual Jeep Wrangler JL, and that's exactly the thought I have when another Wrangler doesn't wave... "Take ya automatic back to the mall!" 😉
Downshifting before a red so I’m going so enough but not stopping then PLOWING past everyone who is standing still
this is it chief, most definitely it
Downshift to stop.... Nah... Imma downshift to GO!
Downshifting just to hear my engine bog down like a semi
yup, literally engine breaking for no reason, just to speed back up again. i do this all the time on back roads
@@skyecase5968 I definitely know that feeling 🤙🏻
Tyler Macheledt yes!
People with automatic cars: i wanna join the manuel gang
Also them: buys a sequential gearbox🤷♂️

Me who has a WRX with the 5 speed:
*haha I’m in danger*
I know what u mean im in the same boat. But somehow my buddy with a 11 second big turbo ej207 only blew his after 3 years of drag racing launches
@@roflcoppter117 They're so tricky, you can get one that'll handle like nothing or you could get one that blows with stock power lmao
Running the risk doing that
Knock Knock.
Anyone who doesn't use the handbrake when they park their car obviously has zero common sense
Only if their handbrake doesn't work in automatics putting into park is like putting a manual car in 1st gear without the e brake
@@ibrahimqureshi2420 Putting a lot of faith on a tiny peice of metal by doing that. There is a reason for a handbrake. Using gears or park will just damage the transimission. It's not strong enough to hold the car reliably, especially on a hill.
Ur braindead if u use the handbrake at winter and rly cold days it can freeze and its expensive to replace
@@kia9999 😂😂😂 what kind of handbrake freezes in the winter.
@@AAAAAAJake In cold temperatures, the emergency brake cable can become frozen and fail to release when the lever is disengaged
This one's kind of a joke for my brothers ..............
*AND SISTERS* in the US.
That was close...

Playing with the shifter is mandatory.
1st habit and I'm already guilty xD
Lol garage amino guy
Good, it's a good habit to have. It is important to know exactly what gear your in at all times, there are all kinds of reasons you could think your in a different gear. Wiggling your gear stick when in neutral and taking it out and putting it back in before taking off is very important.
i literally shake it in neutral on a G29 steering wheel
same here haha
Omfg I always do this when I am using my shifter lmfao!
my bad habbit is putting it into 4th instead of reverse and having the car stall 5 times before I realise what's going on
1:32 "even in europe" shows article talking about the UK, can confirm manuals still good here in Europe
Europe means the entire continent which includes the uk... if u mean the European Union then ur totally right... but yeah most people still buy manuals in the rest of the continent...
@@vali69 and I I'm talking about the whole continent, but assuming the reality of the whole continent is the same as the UK isn't correct, UK is a lot different from the rest of Europe. And the UK is still in the European union.
@@tattttu9 Not for much time, i guess...
@@gufo_tave the future is uncertain, the UK might leave the European union in 5 minutes or never even leave
As a german I can assure, that maybe 1 of 500 Cars are automatic
I shake my waterbottle in my auto now
Damn manuals are going away so fast. Gonna be holding on to my 3000gt for a really long time. Also tbh older manual cars feel more engaging then the new ones. Not to say new manuals aren't good but older manuals from my experience have a more robust feeling
In old Cars you're directly connected to the gears and the clutch, more and more newer cars use automatic gearboxes, automatic rev matching and stuff like that and that's why driving a old car is much more satisfying and really rewarding for every perfect shift
@@DOM-cc I agree 100%
Cuz they're purely mechanical
@@oscarangeles7821 so true, the oldest manual car i've ever driven was a 87 accord.
Sorry but my 2019 Fiesta shifts much nicer than my buddies 1957 TR3. Newer manuals are very good. Just had to turn that dang hill assist off.
0:52 Holy hell, thats me!
Ok I came into this expecting not to do any of these but I do all of them
Also got my license in a manual car. Currently 17 and only drive stick 👌🏻👌🏻
I rev match everytime I downshift in a manual.
Never have I had more fun in a rental Ford C-Max ( also I took it to the Nurburgring, but that's another story )
Steve Edward LOL I do that with my G29 in videogames, definetly would in any car in real life.
I started rev matching in my old 96' fiesta xD and I'm definitely going to Nürburgring this year (got my driving license last year), maybe we'll see each other one? My house is literally like 20km away
@@DOM-cc don't go to Nurburgring so early, trust me, it's a difficult track
Could anyone give me some advice on how to downshift? My current problem is that I can only reach the throttle if I'm braking hard or if I'm coasting towards a stop. Is there something I'm doing wrong??
@@IamHere027 yeah I know but I need my car after this so I'm gonna try a few slow rounds to better know the track in the future
The anxiety man
It's like saving a game multiple times just to be sure
Sees someone coming the other way

“I’ll just flash them just in case”
Looking out for the fellow motorist haha
Holding the clutch pedal down when stopped. Even if the car is in neutral at the stoplight.
Get out of that habit, it will significantly shorten the life of your throw out bearing.
@@flacjacket nah
Who tf does that
@@rossnewall5092 Lot of people. Most manual drivers I know, in fact
Just makes your leg sore in constant stop and go traffic
Lulul Hadøøø Ohhh believe me it does.
I'm a millennial and I love driving manuals. Currently on my 3rd daily driver, which is a manual MK7 GTI with the performance pack. It is the perfect daily car for me. While I do wobble the shifter when in neutral quite a bit, I find myself always trying to engine brake instead of using the actual brakes on the car. There was once when I told others I would drive stick shift until the day I die but I feel like that won't be the case as EVs are quickly becoming mainstream.
I wonder if someone crazy enough would make a fake manual shifter for an EV.
Some companies are now pairing electic motors to manual transmissions. I saw a video about a corvette that had been converted to electric but still used the standard 7-speed
@@akihiko4036 how does that even work?
Instead of connecting the electric motors directly to the wheels, they just replace the engine and connect it to the transmission via a normal clutch and flywheel. It's said that the C7's transmission was strong enough to handle the 700 hp and instant torque of the motor, so they just kept it.
when your going pretty slow so u just feather the clutch to get the car moving when in traffic or parking
there's nothing more satisfying than pulling that crisp E brake
Never thought of the e-brake one, just realized how true it is lmao
It only takes one hard stall by dumping the clutch, thinking it’s neutral but actually a gear, to teach you the shaking habit….
In a manual you can redline as much as you want 😏
You can in autos too, just put it in low gear.
Chase Miller nah the feeling is never the same bro.
I practically shake it till I’m stopped when coasting. Also I come from a place that’s nearly all hills, and I only know one person who doesn’t use their handbrake religiously and they are seen as quite odd. Can relate 100%. Great video!
My "bad habit" is downshifting from 5th to 3rd because i like to use more engine brake than normal brakes
Giacomo Rusconi i bet it sounds so obnoxious to passers by when i rev match from 5th to third and just hold it in the gear but it’s so good sounding
It is a 'bad' habit. I'd rather replace my brakes than my transmission.
@@2010ngojo skipping gears does not damage your transmission, the manual is build for choose your gear whenever you want, in fact, you always have to pass through neutral, and the transmission doesen't remember in which gear it was.... obviously you must be sure that you don't pass the redline when downshifting! check the video from Engineering Explain
I do that all the time lol
Not a bad habit at all. I engine brake all the time saves wear and tear on your brakes
Just started driving manual my instructor does a lot of there and i find myself doing this😂
Well my ebrake cable broke so I just park it in 3rd 🤷🏽♂️😂
From what I heard it's best to park in 1st when on flat ground or when on an upward slope and in reverse when on a downward slope. The higher the gear, the less it resists gravity. But hey, do your own research on that.
Just tryina help out tbh.
I drive body jobs with 9 or 18 speed manual transmission for a living. I also daily drive a 89 f-150 5speed manual 4x4. shake the the gear lever in neutral. I also double, triple check that my truck is in first gear when parked. I love the daily my drive my truck. Great video
Shaking the stick in neutral is an ocd thing, like wiping your mouse side to side to get rid of whatever dirt is under... You`re welcome
this reminds me of when I learned to drive stick in a manual colorado, I do pretty much all of these, keep the manuals alive my friends.
the only time i check if i’m in neutral is when take off the first time, afterwards even if i come to a stop, i already leave a mental note that i’m in neutral
I always do the neutral shake. just sold my manual for a dual clutch S4. I miss it sometimes, but the S4 is so fun.
I always use the hand brake when I park in order to prevent it from rolling always. You could use first gear but I learned it like this. Also use it on traffic lights when I'd otherwise roll.
Very true about wobbling the gearsrick in neutral.
I don't shake it in neutral when coming to a stop. However on the highway I sometimes pull it out of 6th, try and push it farther right, then realize I was already in top gear!
British drivers are taught when learning to drive in a manual (which is a PhD in driving compared to our American brothers) , always use the hand brake and put the car into neutral when waiting at traffic lights or traffic which is not moving for more than about 10 seconds. Sat there for ages at the traffic lights or non moving traffic whilst holding the brake & clutch in serves to wear the thrust bearing on the clutch and blind the person behind you with the bright red glow from your brake lights.
Can confirm. I learned driving on a manual car and owned one back in the day. Now I drive a Honda with an automatic, which is pretty decent. Hovewer, even driving my father's old Kia Sportage diesel with manual seems more fun to me. My next car is inevitably going to be manual. Also, when I bought my Honda: first time driving an auto, approaching a roundabout, so I thought "Hey, I should downshift into 2nd.". Then I attempted to press the clutch, and of course kicked the brake to the terror of the driver behind me. Yeah, some habits are stronger than me.
sometimes I'll reverse out of my driveway and get all the way into the middle of the road before realizing I haven't turned the car on yet
I once got into a car with a column shifter and shifted the water bottle in the cupholder lol
I liked the safety device one😂😂😂
I hv the Habit of giving accelerator while leaving clutch from complete stop.. praying that I won't stall..
Ayyy Robbie at the start!!!
Never wanted to launch my cars, didn't want to damage the diff or engine. Much rather go fast in corners than to burnouts or launches
I use the parking brake in every car because I noticed how people will stop, put the car in park, and I can tell when they release the break because the car will either roll forward or roll back and forth on the pawl, and now I can't not see it.
Sth that I do is upshifting (when slow) without the clutch, is like a game because you have to do it exactly when you have to so that it entres correctly 😂😅
I shake the gear stick in the work truck I use because I make frequent stops and tend to get distracted and forget if I've put it in neutral before getting out. Still happens several times where I forget and i get out and it lurches forward and stalls because it's still in gear... Oops!
Lol I cant drive yet but i have a sim racing rig and i have a h pattern and wen I'm just sitting for a race to start I always shake just to be sure im not in 6th wen the race starts
I park in 1st, so I usually have to go into 1st 3-5 times before I feel that I can leave the car and be sure its in 1st and wont move..
#4 really hit home as I just got my drivers license today and, paired with an '03 VW Polo running on a whopping 75bhp, I really did feel like Michael Schumacher. Ofc it was under the speed limit because going even 30 mph scares the living crap out of me but boy, oh boy, was the car fun to drive. Manuals are so cool ah
there is nothing quite like a 40 year old stick shift pickup truck, just different from anything else, especially old american trucks, really recommend to try if you get the chance.
Pushing the gear stick from fourth to third with one finger sometimes
I do that, or other weird hand motions to shift when I'm fooling around.
Damn if u leave your car unlocked in my country and its a manual everyone that went to driving school will know how to steal it
I dont shake shifter because Im too scared that it will accidently go into another gear and I dont want to do that. Also yes I go for spirited driving in my 2009 Chevrolet Aveo U-VA.Also lots of love from India.Your vids are so entertaining and useful.Been a sub for a while now.I dont leave my car unlocked though...
Sometimes shake in neutral but find my self doing it less often because I came from automatic to Manuel.
I actually don't usually shake the shift knob in neutral. My shifter used to be really really vague (flopping side to side around corners while in gear levels of vague) and I got it fixed recently and it feels so weird, neutral doesn't even feel like neutral.
That no matter what now, even in my automatic cars, when I press on the brakes at all from any speed I reach over to downshift
Didn't you used to have a car tier list video? Where'd it go?
I actually fail'd a driving test in England due to not using the handbrake at a stop light for " lack of control of the vehicle" the car did't even move as i came from the foot break to the clutch biting point
manual cars in america is so much more rare then like compared to sweden where you have to take tour driving test in a manual car, so almost everyone with a drivers license in sweden knows how to drive a manual
I always put my car in 2nd and pull on the handbrake. It really gives you a sense of satisfaction and peace of mind.
Why second not first?
@@NiumeLTU I don't know, I've been doing it for years. It has become sort of a characteristic of mine. Whichever car I drive, whenever I park, I leave it in second. Some people find it odd!
@@nachikets3x you shouldn't leave it in second, what you should do is put it in reverse when pointing up hill and first when on flats or down hill slope. There is two reasons for that. First is cause gears can only go one way, if your in first and hand break fails your car won't go backwards without a very step hill and vis versa. Second those gears have a top speed of around 20 to 30 kilometers, second gear can get up to about 60 kilometers which will do a lot more damage. Leaving the hand break on is great though, you never know what can happen.
@@TheMagnay Yes leaving the car in gear is just for supplementary or added safety. The handbrake is the real heart of the matter.
@@nachikets3x the hand break is great for safety and it works the vast majority of times but sometimes it can break without warnings and you just never know. It pays to be careful.
The principal in my freds school did not pul the hand brake.2 students pushd his car in a river
I dont really shake the shift knob on my focus RS since I dont want to wear down the shift bushings. Its easy to tell when I'm in neutral. On my 07 civic si however, dat boi is loose so I shake dat thing lol.
I also used to launch my GTI at every red light. I thought I was a DSG but when I money shifted after redline I realized I am not a DSG
I drive an automatic car, alongside Park mode i always use my ebrake. Just to keep things smooth instead of getting stuck. If the ebrake does not work properly during the yearly check the car will fail the check and extra work needs to be done.
My bad habit is resting my hand on the gear stick while driving or in traffic. Basically always drive with one hand
Putting up the ebrake in a Auto is actually great for the car. It saves the cars parking gear by not getting destroyed and will make it so it doesn't lurch so far back when on a hill or even on flat ground when it's slightly angled in a parking lot. I would know because a lot of older torque converter cars lurch so far back on a slight hill compared to my father's car which he she's his religiously. It also gives the car added security to destroy the ebrake first if they bump Into it then the transmission
My 2006 Nissan Sentra and my 2018 Honda Civic Si Coupe... two totally different cars, but I drive them both spiritedly.
I always use the e-brake. I always forget to move it to neauteal when I start it and disaster lol
A while ago I offered to drive a friend across town for lunch, one who doesn't drive, and their first question was why I shook the gear stick in neutral.
Everyone I know lives in the opposite direction but if I was involved in any of that rideshare or carpool stuff I'd forever be the driver, I can't imagine it any other way. It would be a win win for anyone who doesn't like driving, until they're in the car when I'm running late. :)
Ohhh yes im Form Germany and in Drive a Manual Audi a4, and i do the shaking, the "racing" shifts and Sometimes pull the shifter Up and down several Times at a Stop light without shifting in reverse 😅 (you need to do this to Shift in reverse)
I always shake it in neutral, I do it to make sure it's in neutral once I've shifted out. My car doesnt have a working e brake so cant use it. I always lock my car. My car is a classic so I love driving it no matter what and I get excited when I get to pull a manual in the shop. My car doesnt have enough horsepower to launch unless you put oil on the ground.
I LOVE my manual Aveo even tho it’s a piece of crap, and I’d never drive any automatic over it. None of them
Yeah I'm so glad mines a manual, I'd bore myself to death if it wasn't. What engine do you got?

How is setting the parking brake, to park.
A bad habit?
Americans.
The title of the video says everyday habits.
Not bad habits.
WTF dude?
You better shake that neutral up good.
My father owns a 2013 suzuki wagonR. Making only 85 hrspwrs with 5 speed manual, and yes the manual is litrally satisfying
Probably the one thing I hate about my Civic Si Coupe. Manual with an electronic Parking Brake. I use my 2006 Sentra Automatic quite a bit still, and I do love the old school e-brake.
I dont rly get why pulling the parking brake on flat land is weird. If someone hits your car you dont want your car to start rolling.
Putting the parking break on is typically recommended by all car manufacturers regardless of the surface. Not saying you have to crank it every time but the transmission pin is a fail safe, NOT a primary parking device.
I used to put my car in park always, no hand brake, until I became a mechanic, and OMG man when that part of the transmission worns out :v is really hard to fix
I always shake it in neutral when I need to know I'm in neutral
I just really love pulling on my knob, what can I say?
I have shaken the gear lever on some cars because I have owned or driven a fair share of cars that had what I call "false" neutral. (You thought the car was in neutral so you lifted your foot off the clutch pedal, and then the car jumped and stalled.)
I HAD to use the parking brake on my pickup truck because I found that just leaving it in gear on what seemed to be flat pavement would allow it to roll.
When I lived in Memphis dumb kids tried to steal my car with a manual transmission. And not only did it have a manual transmission, but it had a wheezy 4 cylinder engine. I asked the police investigating the near theft...why that car? The response: because it was a GM product and they are very easy to steal compared to Fords. And yes, the doors were locked, so they smashed the driver's window.
Anymore, a car most likely to be equipped with a manual transmission is a small sedan. Most folks who like to "hoon" the car they are driving have discovered it is more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow(ly).
Finally, my current daily driver is a 10 year old, Detroit built, V8 powered sedan. When I try to drive it with a bit of enthusiasm I find that the transmission doesn't want to help. Instead, whenever the engine rpms even approach 2000-2200, it tries to upshift or downshift, whichever IT thinks is appropriate.
Shaking the shifter in neutral so many times because its more embarrassing to stall when coming to a stop than it is to shake the shifter a couple times because that no one notices. A stall is very noticeable. Thats my theory
Yeah, I do 1, 2 and 4.
Driving spirited is just fun... it doesent matter what you drive flooring it from a standstill is fun
Why does it sound like the sound does not come out of my headphones
Well i pull my e brake to the maximum no matter where i stop so i am sure it is going nowhere. I also shake the hell out of my shifter but i dont leave my Car unlocked because germany.
That's not good. You'll wear out your e-brake over time with all the extra tension it's under
@@PedroParkerD nah its just a metal rope that is under tention and i dont know if i even have this car until the day i have to adjust it
I dont get why people shake in neutral im always scared of grinding my gears
Im glad that in the netherlands its 1 to 3 on auto
Anyone else skipping 5th gear on a regular basis?
I mean its kinda useless with modern turbocharged engines with lots of torque.
Not when you only have a 5 speed😂😂
@@yourfriendben2 good point
My Skoda Fabia has only 5 speed... and a gear indicator on dashboard. Even if i forgot to use 5th, i would notice, soon or later.
I drive a V6 Altima and skip 5th gear as well. I still use it every once in awhile though since it still pulls but not by much.

At my work, I had a perfect example of how much of a habit some of these things are. I saw the automatic shifter. I told myself "it's an automatic." I pushed the brake to start it. I still wiggled the shifter after I started it
Worst thing that can happen to a manual driver, when switch to automatic, is trying to press a clutch pedal... that does not exist. Happened to my brother 😐
I have a manual 1998 VW Beetle and I drive that thing like I'm trying to outrun a tornado everytime lmao, small engine but has torque for days
Hahaha that was so me....My dad always complaint about it...
Don’t forget about “Barking” the tires from shifting into 2nd😂...
And that pop from the exhaust..shwing shwing
What u mean the clutch slipped
Ouch what are you doing to your poor transmission, why are the tires "barking"
Probably not rev matching. Tires locking up from downshifting.
@@halohunter5217 half right, it's from not letting off the throttle when going from 1st to 2nd. It's called 2nd gear scratch.
I shake the knob in neutral to make sure it's in neutral without having to look so when It shakes its clearly in neutral but ya know, you gotta shake it to know, ya know.
